i had previously indulged in k-ming chang's brilliant poetry on several occasions and i always returned back to my body in awe of her. so when i finally got my hands on 'bestiary', i knew what i was getting into— godhood-like imagery, expressions from mothers ago and a story that is bound to leave behind my belly bloated with grief. but what i did not anticipate were the blows to my shin the words on the pages would resemble— moons made of scars, unforeseen. i will always have a soft spot for books dictating folktales of generational trauma but their trivialization in the most ironical of ways is what makes 'bestiary' stand out from most stories that plant the seed of that storyline. from a mother with missing toes and holes in a yard that swallow a daughterfish's daughter's tail and spit back a grandmother's letters addressed to her daughters— the remnants of wars— to a kite-like brother consumed by the sky and pirates in love that birth a daughter from between a crab, 'bestiary' is a magical, heartfelt, witty, grieving, and humorous confession of a self-proclaimed baby dyke born in the year of the tiger.
