Day 11 Bibliomancy/Reading List #anotherworldoctober First on my list is this beauty from @taschen ‘s new Library of Esoterica-TAROT. It’s a gorgeous timeline of Tarot history with a deep dive into the soul’s journey through the Major Arcana featuring the artwork of Tarot decks throughout history. Including my beloved personal deck, The Pagan Otherworlds Tarot and all of the other decks designed by @uusidesignstudio {my copy is signed by Linnea Gits and Peter Dunham of #ussi}. Following this theme I plan on reading Tarot For Troubled Times by @thetarotlady and @shaheenthedream and then The Modern Witchcraft Book of Tarot by #skyealexander I’ve never read books “about” Tarot. Just the books that have come with the decks. And even though the deck I had was lost during one of my moves, I still have the original first edition hardback book for the Vertigo Tarot and it is still my go to. 78 Degrees Of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack brought the tarot back into my life in a huge way. Before reading this book, I didn’t understand the system of the tarot one iota. According to the little white books that come with most tarot decks, the meaning for each card seemed very strange and calculated. I don’t have a memorization brain so there was absolutely no way I’d be able to commit all of those canned meanings to memory, they just didn’t make any sense. ⁠ ⁠ I’m the type of person who can learn new things easily if I understand the formula or system behind their creation. In 78 Degrees of Wisdom Rachel reveals the esoteric framework behind the tarot which brings together a host of esoteric and spiritual systems such as the tree of life, the Hebrew alphabet, astrology and alchemy to create an extremely powerful divination tool. After reading this book, I was able to break the tarot down into its parts and develop my own understanding of each card. This is what inspired me to create the Outsider Tarot, rethinking every card from the original “formula” while adding some more modern elements into the mix. ⁠ ⁠ Rachel Pollack is one of the most gifted, powerful and influential Outsiders I’ve ever met. I wasn’t even sure I would read it before I had to take it back to the library (I checked out way too many books this time, plus I’m always picky about short stories), but I grabbed it on impulse last night and it is BLOWING MY MIND. It’s the first time I actually use the Raziel Tarot for a reading. And it was , of course, an intense message (I mean I consulted on an important subject , so I kind of had it coming) • Situation : The Tree of Knowledge • Do: The Star • Don’t: The Hermit And look at the composition on this spread! You could read it without even knowing tarot. It’s that clear. That simple and that difficult at the same time. And it’s times like this that made me appreciate Tarot all the better. I was delighted to illustrate a story written by comics legend Rachel Pollack (who wrote over 80 issues of Doom Patrol from 1987-1995, as well as 15 issues of New Gods from 1995-1991, and has since published numerous short story collections and books on the Tarot). Our story, "Werekat", will be included in the comics anthology THEATER OF TERROR: REVENGE OF THE QUEERS, which is currently funding on kickstarter. The Outsider of the day is the beautifully inspirational writer and Tarot Grandmaster Rachel Pollack! On Saturday I had the special honor of having dinner with Rachel who is holding up the 2 of Bottles from the Outsider Tarot which of course is her card! ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣The artwork depicts Rachel and fellow tarot grandmaster Eden Grey doing a reading together, discovering the secrets of the unknown. ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Rachel requested a print of the artwork and it was my pleasure to oblige! Rachel’s quintessential book on the tarot, The 78 Degrees of Wisdom has a new edition released just last year. I highly recommend it to everyone interested in the tarot! Here’s what I wrote about Rachel for the Outsider Tarot book:⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣“I wanted to shoot a video of Rachel with old black and white video cameras from the 1970’s as she did a tarot reading. I prepared for our first meeting by reading her book, 78 Degrees of Wisdom. Considered by many to be the tarot reader’s bible, reading 78 Degrees was a complete revelation. Rachel’s take on the tarot made sense to me because it explained the system of the tarot from the viewpoint of an outsider. When I met Rachel to discuss the video project we instead discussed her writing, the making of her own Shining Tribe tarot deck and much to my surprise, her stint writing the final story arc for DC’s Doom Patrol comic book series for which she created the first mainstream trans superhero. I'm entranced by the #twoofcups from #slowhollertarot. The use of collage is so deft, inspired -- the multiple faces of each figure, the line detail of the hands, the intertwined flow of the water sharpened like my beloved woodcuts. The rethought speech bubbles, overlapping but not stifling. The bright, ovular glow around the figures, illustrating their intimacy without constraining it.
