The God and the Gumiho - Book Review
  ┏━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━┓
➺ There will never be a day, when I turn down an enemies-to-lovers ESPECIALLY with folklore, myths and mystery thrown in? Just take my money now, Sophie Kim.
I’m absolutely serious when I say I was sobbing by the end of this book. I mean, tears were practically streaming down my face. (And my snapchat story viewers can attest to that because yes, I did feel the need to share it with the world.)
Anyways..it's time for another book review because I know everyones so excited to hear my literary insights on yet another fantasy romance novel.
The God and the Gumiho - Sophie Kim
❥ Ratings: ★★★☆☆ | Spice: 2.5/5
❥ Overall Story: I saw lots of reviews saying the first half of this book just didn't do it for them but the second half pulled through, and that's actually where I have to disagree. I read the first half of this book in one day because I couldn't put it down. (Other more-important priorities? We don't know her.) The myths and legends were giving. The world building was giving. The character building was GIVING. However, I feel like that's where it stopped for me. The second half felt a bit rushed in my opinion and there were parts where I thought I had literally skipped a chapter because I was like, what just happened.
The story begins with Seokgha, the fallen trickster god who is now condemned to spend his days as a supernatural investigator, wrangling the unruly, chaotic creatures he unleashed during a failed attempt to usurp his older brother’s throne. We then meet Hani, our fearless female lead and the legendary Scarlet Fox, who has been living in hiding for a century after a deadly rampage she set off long ago.
When Hani inadvertently attracts the investigators' attention by killing two men one night, she devises a plan to become the lead investigator, Seokghas assistant in hopes to throw him off her trail.
I absolutely loved how this book included so much Korean mythology and legend, and the banter between the characters was so entertaining but I feel like their relationship as a whole went from 0-100 in like zero time at all. However the ending to this book is so beautifully written that yes it had me in tears and I will be reading book 2 as soon as it's released because I NEED ANSWERS.
❥ Character Analysis:
➺ Hani:
I adored Hani's character development. Her sharp sarcasm and bold attitude was incredibly refreshing. She was far from the stereotypical legendary liver-eating monster you would have expected, but I loved that about her. However, there were moments when her immaturity and aggravating behavior felt at odds with her age and supposed wisdom.
➺ Seokga:
Seokga is literally so me, he was so relatable I loved his passive aggressive attitude towards everything and witty remarks. Also his love for coffee is so real. He perfectly embodies the trickster god who's been sent to "time-out" for a few centuries to clean up his own mess. His humor and antics were undoubtedly the most entertaining part of the book.
❥ Romance:
I originally picked up this book after reading rave reviews about its epic enemies-to-lovers plot mixed with mythology (take my money!).
I will have to agree with most people when they say this definitely reads like it should be a YA novel despite being categorized as Adult. The romance is well-written, but it progresses so quickly that I had a hard time keeping up. (Definitely not for you slowburn girlies out there.) Overall the tension is there and the final scenes are heart-wrenching. I just wish the pace had been a bit slower.
❥ More Quotes:
“It amuses me that you think you can out-deceive the god of deception”“What do you mean?”
“You awoke in my arms and you liked it. So you stayed there”“Semantics.”
“He wants to kiss her again, he wants to wake up with her again. He wants her”
“Do you enjoy torturing me?”“Yes.”
“Just for that, you're taking the guest room”

Thanks to @randomhouse for the finished copy of Unnatural History. This is the 38th book in the series from Jonathan Kellerman. "A photographer, Donny Klement, is found shot and killed in his own bed. Lt. Milo Sturgis gets the case and asks his longtime friend, Dr. Alex Delaware, to consult. Milo discovers a photo project that Donny had been working on involving several homeless men and women. As Milo and Alex dig into Donny's background they discover his reclusive billionaire father and several half siblings. Was it a family member? Did a homeless person take advantage of a naive young man? And now the people from the phot project are turning up dead..." Because Delaware is a psychologist, you always get a lot of motive and the psychological ramifications of a murder and a scene. Kellerman never veers into the overexplaining that many authors do. It's just enough input to add depth to the story. This is a procedural - Sturgis and Delaware follow leads until they find the bad guy. Kellerman adds a nice twist here near the end. The homeless play a big part in the plot and Kellerman uses that to make some commentary on the homeless situation in several California communities. This is the next book in a long series but can totally be read as a stand-alone. More great crime fiction from Kellerman. #unnaturalhistory #jonathankellerman #alexdelaware #ballantinebooks #randomhouse #policeprocedural #lacrimefiction #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #readinglife #bookphotography #bookcommunity #bookblogger #sodacityreads #suspensebook #bookhaul #literarycrimefiction #homelibrary #thrillerbooks #domesticthriller #crimefiction #thriller #characterdrivenbooks #mysterythriller #bookrecs #randomhousebooks #partner https://www.instagram.com/p/CoaX7l9Ac_L/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Day #22, Wide Awake by David Levithan. Geared for the young adult/teen crowds, there is a decent amount of lip locking and such things. The basics for this book, sets the scene with a young Jewish gay teen who finally gets to see someone like him elected into office. Well almost elected into office. To make a change in their government for the present and the future Duncan, along with his boyfriend and group of buddies must take an adventure to fight for what they believe in. In remembering when I read this book there were parts I loved and things I struggled with in this book. However I do like how many of the characters weren’t picture perfect and had their mishaps along the way.

Ciara and Russell Wilson Release New Children's Book to Inspire Young Readers We love the marriage between GRAMMY-winning pop star Ciara and champion quarterback Russell Wilson. The power couple has thrived with ease. Gaining multiple accolades and awards. There's nothing they can't do and that includes writing children's books, apparently. The pair's debut picture book titled, Why Not You?, co-written by Ciara and Russell Wilson, is already #1 in Amazon's Children's Self-Esteem books. The book has received with high praise. Asking its readers to dream big, Amazon calls the book, "a lyrical celebration of self-esteem, perseverance, and daring to shoot for the stars," encouraging children to pursue their goals, no matter how outrageous or out of reach they might seem.

The book was written as an extension of the pair's Why Not You Foundation. Since 2014, The foundation aimed to fight poverty through education. Their mission is to "equip today's youth with the skills and opportunities to become tomorrow's leaders," according to the foundation's website. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. Woman centered but I genuinely feel it would be an important book for men to read. This is one that will be quoted, referenced, and reread constantly in my life. I haven’t felt this gobsmacked by a book since “Tiny, Beautiful Things” by Cheryl Strayed. Do yourself a favor and challenge yourself with reading something that will shake your comfort zone and hit you in your core. Amazing book by Glennon Doyle. 💜 . . . . . #glennondoyle #untamed #unbent #unbroken #read #reading #womensreading #requiredreading #importantmessage #tinybeautifulthings #books #booksofinstagram #bookrecommendations #soulsearching #readersofinstagram #readnow #randomhousebooks #abbywambach #biography #biographies #quarantinereading #quarantinelife #upsideofpensacola #upsideofflorida #downtownpensacola #inspiration #love #family #hope #reesewitherspoonbookclub (at Pensacola, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_viV9vjno4/?igshid=bmuuc5n8as15

Playing Nice is the next thriller from JP Delaney. “What happens when you find out your son actually belongs to someone else - he and another boy were switched at the hospital. And now your son’s biological father is at your door wanting to spend time with his real son. And you let him. But maybe he has a different agenda he’s not sharing yet. What will you do to protect your family?” This book has a very slow heginning. But stick with it. Once you see what Miles is capable of, you’ll want to cheer on Pete. But mostly you’ll yell at him for being so trusting. Delaney puts Lucy, Pete and Maddie in some tough spots and makes you wonder what will happen to the two boys. I did not expect that ending. Delaney writes controlling, psychopathic characters - the ones you love to hate. But then he shows us what we’ll do when pushed too far. Another good story from Delaney. Good choice if you’re looking for a slow burn with a crazy ending. Thanks to @netgalley and @randomhouse for the arc. I recently found an excellent hard cover copy of A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, 1959. It's a rare first edition copy. . A Raisin in the Sun is a play by Lorraine Hansberry that debuted on Broadway in 1959. The title comes from the poem "Harlem" by Langston Hughes.  . #vintagebooks #bookbreak #bookstagram #bookshelf #igbooks #bibliophile #collectingbooks #collectingbooks #blackwriters #writers #bookcollecting #antiquarianbooks #bookstagrammer #booklover #bookishlove #epicreads #goodreads #bookcommunity #lorrainehansberry #randomhousebooks #araisininthesun #ipreview via @preview.app https://www.instagram.com/p/B52isb8Dqbg/?igshid=1vu3xe57e1bvk
