“Relax, I’ll make you feel good. Just loosen up.”
Her assailant's words rang through her mind as her vision began to fog up upon remembering how he hurt her.
How he made her feel even more disgusted at every touch he placed on her body.
How he cornered her the minute she was alone under the full moon.
Maybe going outside by yourself wasn’t the smartest idea, huh?
The memories of him running up after her until he finally cornered her in an empty alleyway, of him ripping the clothes off of her, of him stripping himself nude as she helplessly watched—bleeding out due to the injuries he inflicted onto her with his own bare fists. Her own heartbeat rang through her ears as her memories became more and more foggy. Soon she began hearing a strange man calling out to her, “Hello? Hello? Answer me, are you okay?”

(Y/n) woke up in shambles, sitting up quickly as her own heartbeat was erratic and out of control. Sweat dripped down her forehead as her hands stayed shaken and clammy. She placed a hand on her chest in a rushed attempt to slow her own breathing down; (Y/n) helplessly looked to her boyfriend, Baji, for help. He kept trying to call out to her in the same voice that she heard in her nightmare, “Breathe, baby. It’s okay.” Baji softly called out to her as he gently wrapped an arm around her. She looked to him for comfort until he uttered a sentence she knew all too well.
“ Look at me.”
Her rapist said the same thing when he was victimizing her. When she was inevitably crying out for help into the night, hoping someone would be nearby and hear her cries for help. Someone that would help her. Her mind felt blank but before she could even control herself she was screaming and violently thrashing around, attempting to get the hands on her off for good.
(Y/n) couldn’t realize it but she had been thrashing out in Baji’s arms, not his. His eyes widened as he silently just let go of her and nervously watched her screaming helplessly like prey in the wild that had been cornered like its predator. He wanted to help her, he wanted to make her feel safe, but he knew that she just went through something horrific and she needed her space. He was just so confused on why she would be freaking out in his arms and not others? He was her lover, he was supposed to be her safe place. Baji just watched her thrash and flail her arms around in a mental panic, his own heartbeat loud in his ears. He didn’t want to be the one who made her feel like this, he wanted to comfort her.

anyway I was reading Men, Women, and Chainsaws (Carol Clover) last night and interestingly was reading the part where she talks about forced perspective. Where in horror films, or assault scenes, instead of seeing protagonist/main victim being attacked, we're sometimes given a POV shot of the attacker, forcing the audience into the claustrophobic, oppressive position of the victim.
I think it's interesting therefore that in this upd8, we don't get shots of Jake weeping or cowering. We don't see him bloody until he's already unconscious. We instead get an upshot of Jane as she beats him to the brink of death. It forces the audience into the oft avoided POV of Jake experiencing literal, horrific violence.
And this time it's not funny when Jake is beaten unconscious. There's no plausible deniability of Jane's abuse in the narrative. The audience is not placed in the shoes of the person violating Jake, or in the shoes of Jake recontextualising that violation, or in the neutral third person perspective. It's sudden, claustrophobic and very effective in forcing the audience to reckon with how they've been perceiving this up until now.
"Are you calling Jake a final girl" maybe, but Jake's role has always been that of the female movie character archetype, hasn't it?

thank you so much for your add to my post, that poem means a lot to me as a gnc woman and the reblogs are so dismal and offensive to me i’ve considered just deleting it lol. like how can so many people miss the point THAT badly
You're very welcome & I agree, it is such an incredibly evocative poem !! I love how it describes the self hatred that so often infects young girls (particularly gnc & gay girls) in a grotesque way-very reminiscent of the body horror genre. It just perfectly harnesses those feelings of disgust & powerlessness that I personally have felt since the moment I hit puberty & continue to struggle with to this day. As a woman your body (& therefore all of you, bc that's all we are in their eyes) is either an object of fetishization, an object of utility, or an object of ridicule, sometimes all at once. I'd really just like to be invisible for once.
