Thinking about marriage/women's rights on Vulcan Some may think that T'Pring not being allowed to divorce Spock was because he was going through the pon farr but if she were allowed to divorce him at all she probably would have done that a long time ago, confirmed by T'Pol when she's speaking with Koss, who isn't suffering from the pon farr. She says that he can choose another mate (without invoking a fight it seems: note the difference between a 'mate' and a 'challenger') and after he makes it clear that nothing she says will change his mind about marrying her, she finally threatens to declare a kal-if-fee. It's clear that Vulcan women cannot divorce/refuse to marry a man they've been betrothed to under any circumstances if A) He himself doesn't consent to ending their marriage or B) She doesn't have someone else waiting in the wings to be given to in his stead. Though, if the challenger she selects fails to win the fight, she'll have to marry her betrothed anyway unless (again) he decides he doesn't want her after the challenge. That seems like an incredibly unfair system, heavily biased towards men. SNW is an alternate universe in many obvious respects but most egregiously in that T'Pring has a lot of non-canonical agency over her relationship with Spock. It's interesting to me that Vulcan society has women in many positions of power and treats women as equal to men from what I've seen despite these laws. We don't really see Vulcans exhibiting a misogynistic attitude towards women in general but in TOS (perhaps because of its general writing style but it's still interesting to note) both Sarek and Spock take on patriarchal attitudes specifically regarding wives. Amanda says that 'of course' Sarek commands her because "he is a Vulcan and I am his wife." It's worthwhile in my eyes to note that she specifies 'wife' instead of attributing this attitude to women as a whole. Again, with TOS' writing style it wouldn't be out of place for her to say "he is a man and I am a woman." Spock, while in a pon farr induced irritation, states that it's "undignified for a woman to play servant to a man that isn't hers" - again implying that there's something specific about being a Wife in Vulcan society which is different from being a woman in general and demands subservience to a husband. This could perhaps stem from the extreme sense of ownership that Vulcan law has permitted men to have over women. A woman legally cannot point blank refuse marriage. There is no option which guarantees she won't have to marry her betrothed other than death. When T'Pau speaks of T'Pring she refers to her as being 'property' and Stonn, before being interrupted, states he's made 'the ancient claim' - we don't know what this is because he gets cut off but it's obvious they're both using the language of Vulcan law. Men are permitted true freedom to choose. If a woman wants to choose someone else to be with there is no option available to her other than the kal-if-fee which might result in the death of the one she wants to be with. And, if her lover fails, her husband can still just decide he wants to marry her and she'll be forced to. T'Pring gives two scenarios: One where Spock 'frees' her and one where he doesn't - it's still ultimately his decision which is clear when he ends the conversation with "Stonn, she is yours." This again isn't just because of the pon farr as T'Pol also goes through this. Koss can choose another mate and when the option is talked about there's no implication that this would result in any sort of fight (both by the casualness of its mention and by the fact that there's no formal word for it unlike the kal-if-fee.) Also, the fact that Koss does eventually grant T'Pol a divorce and it's all fine means that T'Pol isn't lawfully required to have another man waiting if her HUSBAND doesn't want her. It's ONLY required if SHE doesn't want her husband. Tradition must take precedence over individual desire UNLESS!!! You're a man. Then it's fine. Like, your parents might not be happy but legally you're golden.

neptune and pluto influence

Neptune on the ascendent can denote a natural, unconscious influence over others. similar to someone with Pluto influence (pluto conjunct ascendent/midheaven/1h/10h), the person with neptune influence (neptune conjunct ascendent/midheaven + in 1h/10h) makes a memorable impact on those around them, the difference is the Pluto individual is on some level aware of the ways in which they influence those around them, the Neptune person does this unintentionally and subconsciously. the Plutonian person has control over how others view them, over their public image, this is what makes them so powerful. the Neptunian person however can easily be viewed as weak -- plutonians, even when they are most hated, are viewed as a threat. the Neptune person gets underestimated and sabotaged. both the plutonian and Neptune person are subject to rumors, gossip, and ridicule.

people with pluto/neptune conjunct the ascendent/midheaven are often sexualized by others. when the ascendent/first house is involved, they are denoted as sex objects, and with pluto involved, the person is subject to being shamed for their sexuality, oftentimes being labeled derogatorily.

both the pluto and neptune person have many admirers. people with pluto in conjunction to the midheaven or scorpio ruling the tenth house/scorpio midheaven (capricorn/aquarius rising depending on the degree of your rising) are prone to having stalkers. Neptune's admirers are hidden in plain sight -- with neptune conjunct ascendent opposing the descendent, the neptune persons close friendships tend to blur the lines between friendship and romance. people may opt to keep their attraction toward the neptune person to themselves because the Neptune person feels inaccessible or unattainable.

people with Neptune influence (neptune in first house/conjunct ascendent) have many copy cats. Marilyn Monroe had this placement and there is currently a woman living in her old house who dresses exactly like her. often with Neptune conjunct ascendent, opposite descendent, or neptune in the first house, people you interact with will react negatively to or put you down for your qualities, and then later adopt those same qualities as if it were their own. the neptune persons energy is so contagious and infectious that it is easy for those with low self esteem to adopt their traits as their own.

Neptune and Pluto have much to do with legacy. neptune people are remembered more fondly after their death. Marilyn Monroe had neptune in the first house and Elvis Presley had neptune closely conjunct his midheaven -- both celebrities were subject to public ridicule, media gossip and rumors during their lifetimes, however public opinion shifted after their deaths, remembering them as icons and being framed in a more positive light.

plutonians are remembered and talked about long after their death on both extremes of the love and hate spectrum. the pluto oppositions to Elvis Presley's second house stellium, which includes his sun trining his neptune conjunct his midheaven, were activated in recent years while pluto has been transiting his second house -- the biopic bombed at the box office because of negative media attentions surrounded resurfaced accounts of Presleys pedophilia and grooming.

Fais fanfic rambles: Introduction to my 'Selkies by Starlight' ISaT AU

Note: Not to be confused with @looped-140-and-counting / Soren_793's wonderful Selkie AU oneshot series 'The Northern Islanders are Selkies' which was hugely inspiring for this if potentially VERY different in vibe (we got very into talking about cloaks! XD)

Basic premise/summary:

In an alternate version of the precanon adventure, the party lead by Mirabelle to stop the King freezing Vaugarde in time, recruit Siffrin as per usual.

Thing is, Siffrin is a Selkie.

A very skittish selkie without a cloak of their own, who openly wears the cloak of another, and due to Reasons is under the impression that the party know all both of those things and the Implications about them, and for whatever reason have decided to welcome him into their group anyway.

Which er, he's completely wrong about as the party know absolutely nothing.

Mira and Isa like most Vaugardian humans think 'shifters' are just fairytales, Odile knows shapeshifters are real but is only really familiar with how foxes like her father work, and Bonnie is actually able to sense some pretty major things but is a preteen dealing with a lot and hasn't even joined the party yet, so this pretty major misunderstanding is sustained for quite a while...

Cue the AUs' main focus being on the resulting party dynamic shifts as more and more canon divergence due to Sif's 'selkie stuff' (both cute and serious) comes into play, the party slowly realising something is up, and all of it hitting an eruption point right around the time of the 4th Orb/the loss of Siffrin's eye...

Some key world building notes: (Note: very summarised from my docs. I have like 20k+ words on this stuff XD)

The Island - Probably the most drastically different thing from canon here, the Island was not forgotten or erased here. Rather it is hidden away and permanently shrouded in Wish Craft generated fog from 'those without cloaks'. Side note: Sif is still unable to return home and continues to have some very plot critical memory problems but those are due to unrelated issues, which means yay I get to have Sif talk 'home culture' with the others in this =D Also idk why the King is freezing Vaugarde still. I've got a few ideas I'm not sure about and he's not in focus enough for it to even matter really, but random suggestions -especially those with possible selkie motivations- would be very much appreciated.

Selkie powers in my setting - Went into something of a deep dive regarding selkie folklore for this and did you know they have an absolute ton of seer/oracle based stuff going on?

From selkie being summoned by their human lovers shedding seven tears into the ocean, to a selkie man telling a former lover that he and their child will die at the hands by her genuinely good and loving future husband, to a selkie woman forseeing her fisherman husband about to die out in a storm just in time for her to swim over there and rescue him, etc.

So... Yeah. This AU has a lot of plot relevant sensory/seer stuff going on as well as the standard seal shapeshifter stuff (Islander selkie traditionally believe it to be the Universe talking with them, in the same way Wish Craft is talking to the Universe), and going off all the stuff I read decided it'd be most fitting if the general rule for how it all works is: - Selkie always passively have a bit of it going on (aka Sif's canon 'you sense someone nearby' stuff) which like most things can be enhanced with Craft use a bit. - Near perfect understanding of all 'connected' bodies of water (aka they know EXACTLY where the tasty fish are/will be and can probably get a general sense of location for most people on a boat) - Potentially get strong 'visions of the future' and/or instincts on what they need to do to avert an outcome when it comes to loved ones being in danger/distress.

They also maybe get to pull very fast, high power Wish Craft 'curses'/miracles' at idk, the cost of something major like their cloak or lives (mostly based off of the The Legend of Kópakonan where the whole island of Kalsoy was cursed with death by a selkie in retaliation for her husband and children being murdered) but not super attached to this idea past it being in 'seal shifter' stories in-setting.

Other non humans in setting and regional differences in shifters - Pretty much only selkie and selkie issues are in focus here, but just as a general thing, all non humans in setting are shapeshifters and originated from human ancestors who went crazy with the the Body Craft and/or used Wish Craft in some way.

Ka Bue in particular has a ton of them since yokai, with their origins being various sects/clans back in the warring eras going so nuts with trying to weaponize Body Craft (super soldiers, enhanced life spans, infiltration, exploiting attraction to furries, etc), that after some particularly high profile incidents (for an idea plz see: Kiyohime, Tamamo no Mae, Kachi-kachi Yama) and 'Body Craft misuse leading to shut down of the brain/vital organs' being the most common cause of death for 10+ years once peace time was established, eventually Ka Bue's authorities set their foot down and banned Body Craft altogether.

Currently the shifter population in Ka Bue is around 30% of the population, shifters are required to have ID regarding their forms (or potential forms if they're merely 'half'), and it's considered distasteful for a shifter to be in non human form outside of private settings/necessity and even ruder to ask a shifter about their non human forms if they haven't brought the topic up yet first (kinda like seeing/asking about someone's underwear or something XD).

In contrast the Vaugarde, Mwudu and Porteria region is extremely shifter sparce, with most of its original shifter population being the result of various Universe worshipping peoples (mostly small groups, like greek mystery cults) deciding to use a big Wish Craft ritual as some sort of religious rite and becoming shifters as a side effect of their primary Wish (usually stuff like 'we wish for us and our descendants to be one with You and the sea/air' or 'may we Change with the phases of the holy moon' etc) which granted them some pretty neat skills but also tended to come with some 'potentially nasty' drawbacks attached (see: selkie and swan maidens with their cloaks, werewolves Changing in both body and mind etc) Which er, lead to some issues born of lack of knowledge about this stuff, later some very nasty anti shifter sentiment in the region, and then around... IDK 200 to 300 years ago or so ended up exploding into violence and other very nasty things, with most shifters able to do so fleeing the region, and those that couldn't either enduring horrible conditions until they could escape/died or went deep into hiding, with the Island's Country being founded by the two later groups who used Wish Craft to hide their new home, erase awareness of their existence from their enemies (a short term, fully intentionally 'forgetting' blast centered specifically around shifters), and developed a LOT of culture and traditions regarding when, who and what can be told to 'outsiders' about themselves, Wish Craft, etc in order to keep their people safe.

There are shifters living in present in Vaugarde of course (anti shifter sentiment died back a LOT after most people stopped thinking they were real, and most modern day Change Believers are more likely to view these 'totally fictional/allegorical' beings as children/messengers of the Change God rather than 'evil demons who stole power by tearing apart the Change God's cloak for themselves and thus have to be hunted down and made to repent' propaganda take that was everywhere back then) but numbers actually living outside the Island as opposed to merely visiting remain low, since either the shifters know their history and stick firmly to their 'stay secret' traditions or quickly pick up on how oddly unknown shifters are around these parts and decide to err on the side of caution... Also 'trust worthy' humans who do learn about them (usually northern coastal folk, gee wonder why) tend to help cover them up so... Yeah =D

Hey dude, in regards to the person that anon messaged you about “endogenic” systems… don’t worry you’re fine.

The way DID is formed is this: repeated traumatic events before age 9, because that is when your personality is forming. Your personality then does not fully form into one. This is where a lot of people get it wrong, and why the name was changed to DID from Multiple Personality Disorder—because it’s not multiple personalities, it’s a fractured personality. This, in fact, can only be caused by trauma.

When anon was talking about being denied a diagnosis, they’re being denied because they lack a core component (diagnostic criteria) of the disorder.

This is not to be mean or belittle anon, because they’re likely a victim of something else. It’s called Mass Psychogenic Illness, and if you want I encourage you to look this up in regards to “online illness epidemic” (it’s really interesting actually). There are tons of medical professionals who talk about this.

There was tons of teen girls who started suddenly ticcing after being exposed to Tourette’s online. But when they were removed from the online content, the tics stopped. Because they didn’t have Tourette’s. What they were experiencing was real, but it wasn’t Tourette’s (You can search this up too, I read it in an article).

This is happening very commonly in regard to DID. There is a lot of online misinformation going on around it which affects people actually diagnosed with DID a lot. This misinformation is very harmful, and causes people like anon to think they have DID.

Of course, that doesn’t mean I’m not saying anon doesn’t have DID. They specifically may not remember the trauma, but another alter might—and that could be the case. Though, I do doubt it, as DID is extremely rare and caused be extreme trauma. But I’m saying this to give anon grace in that there is a chance.

So, yeah. You don’t have to worry about online lecturers like anon. In fact, please don’t. The science directly contradicts them.

Also sorry this was very long. As someone who has illnesses that have been trivialized and had misinformation spread about because of this phenomenon, I can get very passionate about it. i am sharing some personal thoughts about n*il g*iman under the cut. its been on my mind a lot. getting me down. so i am just getting it out. ftr i wholeheartedly believe and support his victims - those who have been publicly identified and any others. i wish him nothing but rot, and i hope the victims get the justice and peace they need. purely personal thoughts below the cut. cw for mentions all things relating to the ongoing case(s) ie. rape, sexual violence, etc.

taking a moment to just say that the neil gaiman case(s) have honestly fucked a small part of me up for the moment.

it was one thing for me to know that gaiman had shitty coloniser politics that didn't align with my own as an Indigenous fan (dudes briddish, like...not dismissing these things a non-serious issues but there are just things that don't surprise me when it comes to white male british authors), its a whole other thing to cognitively comprehend first hand accounts and recordings of neil gaiman committing and admitting to heinous acts of violation and violence.

it was an easy thing for me to un-pedestal gaiman when his zionism and anti-blackness became obvious and more public, it's another thing (painful and sickening) to have to reckon with the fact that he leveraged people's love for these works to manipulate and harm them. its a different thing to know that the money he got from fans like myself buying those books, films, shows was being used by him to silence and harass these victims and still at this very moment is being used to do that.

something that has really affected me is that in the vulture article, the journalist discusses how ocean at the end of the lane was ("allegendly") a novel he wrote as a means to trauma-plot his shitty behaviour towards women. several friends allege in the article that he wrote that book because he was refusing therapy to deal with the harm he was doing that stemmed from his childhood trauma. if you followed me for a while, you might know that the ocean at the end of the lane is not only my favourite gaiman novel, but my favourite fantasy novel, period. it inspired a lot of my own work but most significantly that book quite literally helped me not to killl myself. i say that without exagerration. it changed my life in ways i struggle to make legible. i carry a copy whenever i go on long trips and own 3 in case i lose one.

it brings me to tears to know the circumstances under which that book was written - however directly and indirectly - are circumstances Gaiman uses to gaslight and DARVO his victims. it genuinely makes me nauseated to know that a book i love so much has not only financially supported gaiman in violence towards these women (as all his works have), but also is something he ideologically uses to justify his actions toward them. it feels so cruel and heartbreaking that book is not just poisined by association, but is implocated directly in his literal rape and trafficking of these women.

for so many years of my life its been a habitual thought, that when i am feeling dangerously hopeless, i think of ocean at the end of the lane or read it and it helped me remember that i exist (as i said hard to really make legible how that book makes me feel sorry). its like a permanent pathway in my brain for years, and now every time my brain habitually goes to go down that path it makes me feel worse. "worse" doesn't even cover it but i am too sad and angry to think of a better word.

i don't really want to say a lot about this, but when i was younger about 10 years ago, gaiman interacted with me several times as a fan online. we were even briefly mutuals for a week on Twitter after i shared a selfie buying my second copy of toateotl at an airport. these interactions have also been poisoned for me in my head. especially, after learning these kinds of interactions were something predatory for the victims and were how gaiman victimised some of the women.
