Omg, I can't believe my previous doodles had a lot of positive interactions with both reblogs and likes! 👀 That's insanely surreal to me! Seriously, thank you!!! 😭💚 So...

Here is the other page of Kafka doodles on my sketchbook! I included the whole spreadsheet of sketches cause it looked neater.

Anyway, I did some different expressions with his kaiju/human forms, and a few of them were definitely a pain to ink, lol. But because Kafka is soooo expressive, it's genuinely just a lot of fun, and it made me love this silly man more! 🤗

I always think of that letter Kafka wrote to—-I guess his sister, I guess I think of the letter more than the recipient—-where he says something like ‘do you know the shame of needing the police to protect you?’

Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

Have been meaning to add this typeset to my collection for a while now. Fits & fills exactly 2 printed pages. Still need to work on those margins though.... final dimensions: 3.1cm deep x 3.5 cm heigh x 1.5 cm wide

#twas a gift/exchange and am only so-so happy with the results #aiming for an unfamiliar color pallet and not wild about results -- that gold & purple reminds me of university colors #that green headband was a mistake in more ways than one-- live (craft) and learn #twas my first time reading it! read the mini and only spotted one typesetting error/typo... also-- story was much stranger than I expected #now I know #bookbinding #little book #metamorphosis #franz kafka

#read hermann hesse's demian the other day and now i intend to start the sorrows of young werther #thomas mann death in venice is also on the list #i read kafka's the metamorphosis two summers ago so maybe the trial will be my next kafka read #oh yeah goethe's faust is also on my list #unfortunately my german is still too rusty so i have to go with translations but. one day.#i want the dual-language edition of demian so bad but i don't think there's a digital edition of it anywhere #and the print edition on amazon is like £30 ew #my level of german is at the annoying stage where i understand enough basics so i'm too lazy to actually study it properly #but not enough to just dive straight into reading a book without any aids #oh yeah. drop german lit recs pls

#I'm actually loving that Ratio seems to be caring while Ruan Mei is more hmm ruthless perhaps‚ and definitely more uncaring and colder #I already thought this was going the direction they would take given the leaked voicelines and Ruan Mei's light cone #but I'm glad it's looking like that still #ngl I often see there's a... trend to make female characters often 'softer' than male ones #(like with Topaz and Aventurine in that last dialogue for instance. I'd say Kafka to some extent falls into this somewhat too.#Herta more and more perhaps. Himeko reads to me way colder and more detached and selfinterested than Welt #which is nice even if I have qualms about the writing there for now)#And that trend bothers me. So Ruan Mei for now is being quite satisfactory. I like that aspect of Serval too #Screwllum at times seems kinda shady as well haha I guess the Genius Society is just very shady. It fits #I talk too much #Traces

there is no foreign author as influential to a group of people as Franz Kafka is to Japanese writers. It’s like Kafka is their special little guy.

#this thought has been brewing in my mind for about 7 years now #it must have something to do with murakami right? at least partially?#tho maybe I’m think that because the first time I stumbled across this question was when I read Tokyo Ghoul #because that has a LOT of Kafka references/influences but also a lot of direct mentions of murakami’s work #but aside from Murakami himself and Sui Ishida I’m also talking about Mr. Asagiri Kafka himself #game writers too kafka is goichi suda’s fave author I think & kojima has a prettyyy big Kafka reference with the odradek in death stranding #of course there are also a few 20th century authors who were influenced by his works #like sure there are a lot of people influenced by kafka’s work #I just think it’s very interesting how Japanese writers are the loudest about their love for kafka’s work #and I’m asking myself if there is anything comparable to the grip that Kafka has on Japanese writers #and how that even started?#if someone has any kind of explanation for the grip Kafka has on Japanese writers plsss pls pls enlighten me #sina’s rambling

I love preordering books because I forget about them until they arrive and once they arrive, I'm all at once surprised, charmed by my own forethought, and as excited as when I first noticed them enough to preorder them.

(Today's title: Beauty Matters: Modern Japanese Literature and the Question of Aesthetics (1890-1930) by Anri Yasuda, the chapters of which include (i) Natsume Soseki's Quest for "A Feeling of Beauty," (ii) Mori Ogai and the "Inner Flame" of Beauty, and (iii) Akutagawa Ryunosuke's Literary Anxietieis and the "Power to Remake.")

#bsd #bungou stray dogs #i should maybe just. have a modern japanese lit tag that i use regularly instead.#but (for now) i'm reading only modern japanese lit & history titles related to or for their proximity to bsd and the bsd relevant histories #so it's as much part of my bsd fandom engagement as anything bsd i post #which isn't to say they're not also separate works and i'm not also very invested in the irl people and their lives separately from bsd too #but focusing on the bsd authors has kept me from becoming overwhelmed and my affection for them began with bsd #and kafka asagiri's dialogue with their legacies #so while I don't tag bsd when i'm talking about only the authors or only the authors' works #there's sometimes little to no distinction for me between the literary critique (bsd) and whatever literary critique (academic) i'm reading #this isn't to say i conflate the characters with the people #or vice versa #but rather to say that i am also engaging in dialogues with the authors that are part of other more abstract conversations #at a conference hosted by asagiri and harukawa #convos which I am dangerously close to escalating by writing my own autobiographical fiction novel #framed within a metaconversation between the fictional author and her impressions of the dead authors #as filtered through time + geographical and cultural distance + translation + the inherently muddled natures of truth and confession #namely because i'm frequently haunted by akutagawa with whom I avoid speaking but to whom I can't bring myself to let go #despite the inherent violence in my presuming to know any amount of him at all #and sometimes because of it
