thoughts on thistle and yaad's dynamic that i vomited in the tags of another post but will now try to articulate here: they're not actually family, or at least they shouldn't be. not in a conventional sense anyway. framing them as uncle and nephew (even in a non-literal, silly fantasy world way) rides more on technicality than anything concrete.
what i mean by this is yaad calls thistle by name and says he and delgal were raised "like" brothers. he talks about thistle like he's an outsider imposing himself into the melinis' space, and it's clear that thistle was never legitimized as a member of the family. for thistle's part, though we don't know how he would treat yaad pre-demon brainrot, it's safe to assume based on the way he punishes him—turning him into a doll—and how little is shown in the way of any sort of relationship between them that thistle only cares* about yaad as an extension of delgal (otherwise i'd expect something like kabru and milsiril, because it's not like another complicated interspecies family dynamic would be out of place, yet there's next to nothing on them even in bonus content, just their scant interactions in the main story).
in essence, they're strangers to one another. thistle's desperation to preserve the illusion of a family, a model where he doesn't even fit, was the snare they were caught in for the past thousand years of stasis. yaad-as-nephew is a prop to uphold that illusion, and thistle is playing a role he's unfit to play. in the context of post-canon interactions, attempting to reconstruct that facade would only be a reenactment of trauma for them both (in a deeply compelling way i'd love to watch unfold, tbh), as that "uncle and nephew" framing places thistle in an implicit position of power over someone he's already traumatized through misuse of authority in the past, a role which also perpetuates his adultification and yaad's infantilization in turn. it'd mostly be an obstacle to any real connection.
best to burn the melini family bridge, i think, and if there's still anything salvageable left in the rubble, let something different supplant it.

hi!! i know u talk a lot about aromanticism a lot on here, but i don’t think i’ve ever seen u talk about aromantic anthy. would u mind discussing/elaborating on it or linking to a post where u do because i’m very curious!!
i got a similar ask half a year ago or something ridiculous like that on my main blog, but i’d like to really do justice to my url right now and explain it in more concrete terms.
i will say, it’s important to bear in mind that this reading of anthy’s character is very much informed by my own experiences, and a lot of those experiences are ones im not keen to talk in depth about. but you know. let’s make some nebulous gestures towards ideas of being traumatised, being autistic, struggling to meaningfully connect with others and honestly not really wanting to do such because of how they treat you.
like ive previously said, an aromantic perspective on the world would, i think, really benefit anthy. when youve lived your whole life experiencing violence at the hands of these patriarchal structures, of which romance is absolutely one, it’s kinda like. damn. im uncomfortable buying into those ideas.
anthy also has this lovely line in ep 19 where she says to utena ‘romance either happens or it doesn’t’ and it’s just sooooooo. so very interesting to me, actually, that anthy would say something so black and white about ‘romance’, a topic that anthy knows better than a lot of rgu characters is hopelessly confused and arbitrary and often enabling violence. and utena (fellow aromantic gaybo) says 'yeah, i know, but...'. these simplifications, these elisions. what is and isn't articulated. but what? maybe things are much more complicated than we'd like to think.
anyway enough of that tangent. one thing i as a trans and aromantic person always return to when discussing trans and aromantic readings of characters/texts more broadly is that there's no singular piece of evidence that can really cement these readings as Undeniable. it's like. okay. there's a critique of romance as a patriarchal structure in revolutionary girl utena. there's an ambiguity about anthy's feelings towards characters like utena, where there is clearly a queer connection but it takes shape in unconventional and complex ways. me, i'm aromantic, i see all of these pieces and i go oh well that's because she's an aromantic lesbian. you know, there's plenty of little moments i can evidence but those moments can be used to argue for an alloromantic lesbian anthy too. romance is a very arbitrary thing and i think everyone should take their own approach to it unapologetically. of course, mine is that it's hellish and i want nothing to do with it, but im just one guy. and im okay with that. i feel strongly about this reading and it is personal, and id be dishonest to say otherwise, but i do also find that it's well-evidenced in the text. as one of my lecturers once said, don't worry about authorial intent, it isn't real <3

another billions analysis thing is like so yeah while it's like "hmm let's think about power" but then doesn't really do that, what's there to offset that is "but let's think about what these people with billions(tm) are doing because of their like personal feelings & lives & whatever" and the personal feelings are the thrilling journey of s1 men following the compass of their ego & the way their personal lives matter at all beyond this is about their Relationships. except the relationships are also actually about the power billions isn't really thinking about because the ones billions focuses on involve this Fealty where one person does whatever and the other is just stuck with it. sure they might air some unhappiness sometimes, but if it's not punished or ignored from the start anyway, it'll still end up so inconsequential that it's as though it never happened. and what's left to offset the way that can't mean anything if you again take it for granted that of course people are just locked into such relationships & best they can do is fix it from the inside or embrace it as is? is "do you think this character is a winner among losers & you want to see them pwn everyone & do whatever they want forever" & if you like all the media the creators do like

Honest to god how do people that solely like Raoul/Christine survive in this fandom space?
Like I’ve belonged to fandoms where the main ship has a monopoly over the fan content but the side ships still have dedicated fan circles that build community and create long term content (Shout out to the Entrapdak and Drakgo fandom).
But Poto is odd in that not only is the canon couple not the most popular, but there’s doesn’t seem to even be a dedicated fan base for it.
Idk if that was me I’d go crazy.

[ NILE MESSAGE ] we tied this time! ha! next time i'm winning.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] hey, remember how in grade school we just kept counting how many times we tied?
[ NILE MESSAGE ] now we're doing it with bikes. aiba says i shouldn't do 'property damage' in our usual spars so this was fun.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] seriously, with this job i can't go that fast.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] but you found some hidden spot. i don't think even i've scoped it out before . . .
[ NILE MESSAGE ] come to think of it i guess i don't know a few areas you know about. i've shown you around some of the places i frequent . . i wouldn't be surprised if you knew golden yokocho.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] no, not lemniscate. i can feel you grimacing at the mention, haha. don't gimme that look, your face is gonna get stuck.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] well, i did join in. and it was fun as hell!
[ NILE MESSAGE ] i'm going to relive that look on your face again with bikes this time, too! nope, never letting it go btw.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] i think you're the first person i've met who can keep up with me, so when i kicked your ass in grade school i didn't think we'd still be in contact like this.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] oh c'mon, we had plenty of different outcomes and competitions after that, and plenty of ties.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] look, i'm not good with words but -- i feel like i can actually let off some steam, y'know? i don't want to break iris' arm in arm wrestling. . . even if she IS pretty fast.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] so..thanks. it was fun.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] with my job, i think my boss would kill me if she knew, and going home wouldn't be much better. i am still a police officer. and date gets er, well what can i say? it's date.
[ NILE MESSAGE ] but it got my mind off some things! hope you got the same rush!
[ NILE MESSAGE ] keep staying on your toes akira! and thanks!
[ NILE MESSAGE ] i wonder after all that adrenaline if we'll be able to sleep....i'm gonna charge aiba so, signing off! let's do this again!

The campfire popped and crackled, embers and smoke swirling into the vastness of midnight.
A hushed, dulcet baritone accompanied the symphony of crickets and the wind whispering through the trees.
“Et Eärello
Endorenna utúlien
Sinomë maruvan
Ar Hildinyar
Tenn' Ambar-metta...”
Noticing @vicit-vim-virtus stirring, Nenya still in his grasp, the stranger by the Elvish garrison’s fireside raised a hand to remove his hood. Striking yet somehow familiar features, framed by dark curls, were illuminated by ethereal moonlight. The Ranger studied Elrond’s features with keen, yet tender, blue-grey eyes.
“Would that you were ever so,” the Man murmured, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “Rest. Morning and its troubles will come soon enough.”
