Cat is a humanoid of a species that evolved from cats, and like his ancestors, he is extremely vain. This manifests in a truly astounding wardrobe over the course of the show's many seasons. Cat wears this double-breasted salmon-pink suit in his first appearance, from the show's first series in 1988. He wears it a few times over the first couple of years, but with different shirts, ties, and accessories.

It's a great example of 80s men's fashion, with the shoulderpads and taper-leg pants, and its silhouette also recalls the zoot suit of the 1930s and 40s. Note the snazzy gold lapel pin and high-heeled white shoes as well!

so the whole crew got wiped about by cadmium poisoning because of a faulty drive plate, so obviously, mcintyre is dead, so that wouldn't have killed him. so did he just get switched off instantly, or did he go insane for 3 million years until he was replaced with rimmer. and did rimmer get introduced as to why he was back by holly, or was he just brought back with no explanation??

It's kinda funny when people ask me about CBS Ghosts, I usually tell them to give the first six episodes a go, and to try not to be put off by the first two-parter. Because those first two episodes do have a lot of forced jokes, a lot of shot for shot scenes of the UK pilot which feel badly copy and pasted, and a bit too much toilet humor. I almost quit the show after the first two hander and then decided to give it another chance and am glad I did because the show does find its own identity pretty quick after that.

But what's interesting is that, I had a similar experience with the UK version. I did NOT like the show at all on first viewing. My best friend suggested we watch it, I sat through the first three episodes and thought...."meh". Like the plague ghosts got a chuckle out of me but not much else. And I HATED the main ghosts. So much. It kinda had the opposite problem to the US version, while the characters there felt too flat and cheesy, the UK ghosts felt way too mean - not even in a fun way like Red Dwarf or Blackadder. Like the first episode is fine, but in the second one they are all basically torturing a woman who literelly just got out of the hospital after barely surviving - because of them! With the exception of Pat and Kitty, I really didn't want to like any of these guys. And then the third episode, even when they stop tormenting Alison, I found them trying to set the builders up really cringy and a little uncomfortable, especially the scene with planting Alison's wedding ring. These episodes work great on rewatch to see how far the ghosts and Alison's relationship with them develops, but at the time I just wasn't enjoying the show so stopped after that. But my friend continued and kept saying it was amazing.

So a few months later I decide to give it one more try and the next episode up was Free Pass. I think this episode, while not the strongest of S1, is very underrated because this is what won me over and kept me watching. And I think it's because this is the episode where the ghosts are not just annoying assholes. We get to see them as actual people being excited and interested in the film crew. Aside from Robin messing with the lights, the ghosts aren't really a hindrance to anything. Instead it's where we see that Alison is just as unhinged and morally grey as they are - willing to put people at risk in her unstable house for the sake of making some money. The whole thing about her winding Mike up with her celeb crush is also funny and cute. It's also interesting to learn that this was the first episode the guys filmed and you can kinda feel that buzz of them all being excited to start and how it bleeds over into the episode. After that I was hooked.

Binging Red Dwarf and going from S13 back to S1/S2/S3, you notice little things that changed so slowly, you didn't notice. Craig was Scouse as a mother fucker in the early years. Then as time went on, you could hear the accent diminish, and diminish. I assume that just comes with working in television so much? He's still obviously a Scouser, but it's very light in comparison to young Craig. Then with Robert, early on it was very obviously a bit of an inconsistent fake accent. Then later on, it was still a fake accent of course, but it sounded believable. That it's not just a voice that he's putting on, even though it is. It's also a similar situation with Danny. Always fun, but very caricature for a while there. Then over time, it's still a cartoon, but like Robert it feels a lot more believable. Not that any of this changes the quality of the show, just something you notice. Then Chris has always just been Chris. Love that smeghead. His word choices have changed, but that's just a result of a change in general cultural parlance over time.

this question really made me think a lot about the show. i have two favourite aspects of the show that i don't see a lot of people talking about.

1: their encounters with life forms other than themselves become more and more frequent as time goes on in the show. in s1 and 2, the characters are still adjusting to the life (or death in rimmer's case) they've been given and still exploring parts of the ship they didn't know about before or mew features and as times goes on they decide to explore more of space and their encounters with many different species. as they grow older and more mature, they'll become quite contempt and relax a lot more than before.

2: all of the main characters' flaws are stabled by their one redeeming personality trait. in the show, it seems like their flaws are more of their personality than their redemption trait.

for example, lister 24/7 is quite a slob, but it's redeemed by the fact that he's kind, has a heart of gold, and refuses to kill anything.

they're all the people who were outcasted for one reason for another, (rimmer having a traumatic childhood, lister also having to sturggle in his childhood by thinking his parents abnadoned him, the cat being left behind for not being cool, and kryten having to live with the fact that the people he was meant to be taking care of, died.) but they are all together and living in the same ship. because of this, you'd think they'd become better people every day? nope. not at all. their traits still stick with them, as it's a big part of their personality. but they'll be that one-time in the show that'll remind you they're a person too, and they'll carry on. there hasn't been a moment when one character was bullied more than the other. (apart from rimmer, but they show the reasoning behind him being bullied by the others, and he 'redeems' himself in some way.)

they're a group of misfits, and they all personally think they themselves are the best, even though they are all on the same level for one reason or another.

Favourite season of red dwarf?

I'm inclined to say series 5 because it houses my favourite episode of all time (s5 e4) 'Quarantine' but series 2 has more solidly great episodes like 'Queeg' and 'Stasis Leak' and it introduces the character of Kryten.

Also, while series 1 has one of my other all time fave episodes (s1 e5) 'Confidence & Paranoia' I still have to say series 2 is the best.
