SW Hades AU March-April Update

I'm here with another two-month joint update because at the end of April I can hardly call it a March update, and truth be told I don't think I did much for this AU in the first month of spring anyway.

I started playing Hades 2 again, and made some progress with the Omega and Boba redraw of the Warsong update wallpaper :3 The more time that passes between posting and writing this the happier I am with this piece. Who could find all the gear that Omega wears from the Batch? 👀

Which cannot exactly be said about Sabine and Ezra as well, but I finally have something to show for them!!

Next up is Satine (now that I can show a small illustration in my skethcbook for her, it should go easy - I hope), and maybe Fennec or the Armorer. And lining Axe and laying down flat colors for him and Koska as well. I'm trying to get a drawing for all the missing characters and get them to the part where only detailed shading is missing. If my hand doesn't hurt too much at least ^^;

I'm also gearing up to drawing a new Ares!Boba too, but I'm still in denial about that ^^;

I did not have a particulrly good time with these drawings, I will be very honest upfront. I had to redraw Omega two times because I tried to line that piece in CSP and for some reason faces are just not happening for me there; It hadn't go well with Echo either months ago. I don't know what's up. The tilt of my tablet or that I don't have o zoom un until all I can see are pixels?? OTL

...and then the colours fought me something awful too. Between Boba and Omega they had red, yellow, green and blue covered, and all that with Boba's white flightsuit was not fun ^^; I don't know, I just cannot deal with that many colours - so figuring out what and how I should desaturate was quite an experiment in patience for me until they looked somewhat cohesive. Thankfully the added moonlight turned out to be distracting enough that I'm pretty much warming up to it all now.

I'm afraid I will have to use actual Multiply layers for the full shading.

And Sabine. Oh Sabine.

I've struggled here, big time, and I'm still deeply unhappy with her. I experimeted a lot in my sketchbook with her pose, but any time I thought I was finally on to something as soon as I went in to fix some minor anatomy issues digitally and add some details things just fell apart.

It was the tooka that messed everything up, I'm sure of it D: ^^; I wanted something to visually tie Sabine and Ezra together, and my decision fell on the little white tooka that was in Sabine's mural too at the end of Rebels. But now Sabine's shoulder had to stand in a way that the little critter can perch on and judge from...

Honest to god I almost cried with relief when I came across Eurydice in Asphodel when I switched back to playing Hades for a bit, and realized that she has the lean and attitude in her pose that I was looking for with Sabine. So it was either the coward's way out, or to throw the entire project out the window and become a hermit in the mountains or something.

I am deeply, deeply fond of Ezra however Q^Q He was so cooperative after a few initial testing sketches, his hair is perfect, I didn't forget his scars, and I will find it in me to forgive his weird not-really-chainmail shirt, because that one I did to myself XD

I also finally got around to drawing a quick sketch for Fennec - for a hot minute I was very very tempted to pick for her a pose that's a lot closer to Widowmaker from Overwatch, but the vibes just didn't quite match. That was a very sad realization :'(

(Yes, I took the picture after Satine bled through the page in all her alcohol marker glory, yes, I regret it, and no, I cannot relably draw faces on paper. It is a real tragey. I'm in mourning.)

And just so that I cannot really sigh in relief, Leia is my next struggle. I still don't know how to make her work, and it's been months. Terrible. Horrible. Really really bad. Why am I even trying...TT^TT

So that's it for this month. It's both less and more than how it feels, and I'm also kinda losing a bit of steam - my mind is at re-drawing the entire background section for the House of Hades, so on the backburner i'm trying to cook up various background elements to fill the halls up with. Hades is such a beautifully designed game with such amazing shapes and colours, and Star Wars is such a different style especially when it comes to decorations... So there is a lot of cooking that will have to happen here. But I spent a not insignificant part of my last week (I'd been sick, I could get away with it) watching Drawfee speedpaints (they are so fun and so educational sometimes) and Jacob really popped off in one video creating a pixel art game of some sort? And ever since all I could think about is how and IF I could make my pocket Din move through my version of the Hades AU. Just a section of it. I'm itching to draw the backgrounds, but goddamn I am tired, so I just keep distracting myself from the important character art stuff with these daydreams X"D

I also very badly and incredibly distractingly want to re-draw Boba - I've drawn him so long ago, and it feels deeply unfair that I tried to puzzle out the style on him - and while Din got his upgrades bit by bit Boba just didn't. Also. Ares. Ares looks so good in his character art just sitting around like that - all casual-like - and Boba also has his trademark sprawl and... Look. I'm back to Boba being my most favourite clone, okay? I miss him. I miss drawing him. There.

When I was in my early 20s Paul Hollywood attempted to open a chain of take away bakeries called Knead. Original, I know. They sold bread, sausage rolls, and pies in the afternoons and English breakfast boxes and bacon sandwiches in the morning.

Anyway, I worked there. Turns out he's an arsehole, all the bread got baked in bulk by machines and just relabled to mark up the price and we had a dead mouse under the ovens for three days because I "wasn't allowed" to just sweep it up and it was a bank holiday weekend so the pest control lady couldn't come till Tuesday.

He may be a good bread baker, but that's all the good there is to say about him!

Ganondorf is compelling to me and always has been because he's right to want more. He grew up in a desert wasteland with his people struggling to survive. You might even say he was righteous when he set out.

Keep in mind that he fought in the civil war that happened in Link's infancy. We're not sure what side he was on, but we know the King trusts him now.

I guess the question was, when did he start doing objectively bad things? He put a spider curse in the Deku Tree. Even if it doomed the tree, it wasn't right away... perhaps he was hoping it would put pressure on the Deku Tree? He could have just outright killed him, but he didn't. So, seemingly, his intention was to remove the curse when the Deku Tree gave in. Otherwise, why not just raise it to the ground?

Same with the Gorons, and the Zora. Neither of the actions he originally committed against them was all that deadly. They were seige tactics.

Contrast that with what he does in the adult timeline. Feeding Goron to a dragon, destroying the largest Hylian settlement in the Kingdom, freezing Zora's Domain solid (if that was even him to begin with and not a result of the natural imbalance in Hyrule.) He takes on a very salted Earth policy and that land he lusted for so much, he slowly starts to destroy and taint. Ganondorf clearly was corrupted by his own greed and lust for power. It's something that happens to humans all the time. He now sits alone in his castle, going mad. He barely resembles his former self. Not a warrior king of his people but a powerful lone sorcerer. His people still live in the desert. (apart from a few iron knuckles.) He didn't save them at all. He's become completely isolated from the Gerudo.

Did Ganondorf deserve better than the cards he was dealt? Did the Gerudo? Absolutely.

Notably it's not even subtext, but overtly stated in game that Hyrule, and moreover the Royal Family have a bloody history tainted in darkness. Thanks to Royal Family, an entire race of people, the Sheikah, were completely wiped out. All the races live separately from one another and are forbidden by degree of the King not to intermingle. You need special permission just to access Zora's Domain and Death Mountain. Seemingly the only reason Zora and Goron aren't considered monsters like creatures such as Deku and Lizalfos, despite possessing similar levels of intelligence, is because they sided with the Royal Family and swore allegiance to them.

i’ve probably said stuff like this before but i truly think people need to stop thinking of ganondorf as a character who is in need of any form of redemption. and i know people don’t do it with negative intentions but the common impulse to ‘justify’ any remotely positive or human depictions of him by applying some kind of Good Ganon AU/Headcanon to it is. absolutely stupid and unnecessary and completely unhelpful, even taking into account that so much of his depiction in canon is racist and damaging

i’ve even seen my own stuff occasionally get tagged as some kind of Good Ganon AU, and i’ve never ever once drawn him with that idea in mind, i’ve literally always just tried to interpret him as he already is and maybe build on that. and it’s slightly infuriating when just the idea of him existing with his own agency, or maybe even the idea of him already being REMOTELY justified in his anger towards the imperialist genocidal kingdom he exists to dismantle, is apparently UNFATHOMABLE to some people

SPOILERS BELOW, SO BEWARE THE NOT CAUGHT UP FOLKS

Brennan’s take on prophecy continues to drive me insane. Steel argued last ep that diviners are susceptible to illusions, but I was still so high off of my love of Uncle Sly that I only really listened to her this time around — a good diviner is one who is right 51% of the time. I was taking for granted, given the leeway Sly receives, especially regarding his finances, that wizards put so much stock in his abilities that his words should be taken as gospel. But Steel is an example of exactly what Sly said about why he isn’t respected. You can’t receive acclaim for stopping tragedies that never come to pass. Steel’s doubts about the relability of divination are so in line with her obvious pragmatism. and have also given me a more balanced view on the prophecies we received in “Later Than You Think”… which will also give me a way to sleep at night regarding the fact that Suvi now feels so incredibly far from joining Ame at the Coven of Elders meeting now. I can tell myself that Sly could have been fooled, or wrong about how certain he was that Suvi needed to be there…

Brennan had Sly say things that felt true, but I don’t doubt that there was also some powerful understanding of the world that went into them. I didn’t know exactly what it would mean that Suvi wouldn’t receive permission to leave, but then we saw in this ep and it just made sense. Through an understanding of the changes to the Citadel that were coming, and an understanding of Suvi’s character (esp. her dynamic with Steel), he saw that he had a way of keeping Suvi still. Just have Steel give her a direct order. Suvi saw what happened the last time she was made to disobey Steel by her friends. So she’s not following this time. Not only that, but she tries to bring them back to her. Suvi told Sly that she understood that they wouldn’t let her leave, but being confronted with the actual circumstances in the moment meant Aabria had the opportunity to (in my opinion) lean into the storytelling by (as she put it) making “big swings.”

As he predicted, the way Sly told Suvi the prophecy about her departure and her importance to Ame’s survival didn’t affect her in-the-moment decision. It isn’t a situation where knowing the prophecy helps make it come true. To me it smacks a little of the original etymology of “prophecy” as a diagnostic device. These are true (if somewhat vague) statements about how the world tends to function. Which means that they don’t play a huge factor in the decision-making of Suvi, as the character of the trio who is of the world and molded by systems in a way our Witch and our Wild One are not. [EDIT: And, as Aabria herself pointed out in the comments in this post, the prophecy wasn)t explicitly about the Citadel, which means the ultimate manifestation of that prophecy caught Suvi off guard]

Aabria (@quiddie) made an incredibly hard RP choice by making the decision that was correct for her character, in spite of her awareness that the choice would make her job as a player so much more difficult.

And I love her for it.

Writing Advice On: Relatability

Hot Take: Make you characters relatable, not like that!

When people hear the world "relatable", a certain image comes to mind of the early to mid 2000s where the most important thing for a celebrity to be was "authentic" and "down to earth" in the most superfluous and superficial way possible.

Using this jumping off point, I will talk about what I hear when people advise to write "relatable characters" and what naysayers for relatability hear! Because it isn't the same thing.

When people read stories, they are looking for an immersive experience into the lives and emotions of others with the word "other" highlighted in order to make a point against relatability. Most naysayers of relability think that "relatable" means:

"has all of my superficial personality traits and life"

Obviously, the most popular characters in western media such as drug lord Walter White in Breaking Bad or disabled Ryan in Special aren't relatable to the majority of people.

And with that last paragraph, I have already pointed out a problem in "relatability is pointless". Walter White and Ryan are relatable.

Walter White is the story of corruption as his lust for power drives him further away from the man he once was. While this isn't the trajectory most follow, many can relate to being or knowing someone who went down a bad path paved with good intentions.

Ryan is the relatable "coming of age" story of a gay man with cerebral palsy who decides to go after the happier life he has always wanted. Ryan is the relatable protagonist who is awkwardly going after what he wants which is something that all of us have either tried or wanted to do.

These characters are relatable, not because of their specificity, but universality which is a made-up word probably.

"Sympathy Is Caused By Relatability And Understanding"

We sympathize with people not because we always relate to the individual circumstances but because we relate to stories about personal suffering which is universal.

It the belief that characters are only relatable when they have superficial traits that are similar to our own superficial traits that has prevented minorities such as Ryan O'Connell and Walter Jr. from taking the spotlight!

It comes from the belief that being a white cishet neurotypical abled-bodied man is the default and everything else diverse should be marketed toward a specific member of the populus.

Women protagonist = Woman story

Disabled protagonist = Disabled story

Etc. Etc.

But because people are learning simultaneously that "universal relatability is important" and "human stories are human stories which are universally relatable" which has allowed movies such as Barbie and shows such as Special to be such hits.

Obviously, Barbie is steeped in the existence of womanhood and Special is dedicated to representing disable existence BUT this doesn't remove their non-disabled and non-female audiences.

TL;DR: Relatability is important in the sense that relatability is not the "stories of people who look and act exactly like me" but instead "stories of people who live, thrive, and struggle just like me"
