On June 21st 1098 a Priory at Coldingham was founded.
Coldingham Priory was founded by Edgar, King of Scots and son of Malcolm Canmore and St Margaret, in
"gratitude to Almighty God" for recovering his kingdom from Donald Bane, his uncle, who had usurped it as his father’s death.
The first monastic community consisted of thirty Benedictine monks from Durham, and the Priory remained a ‘cell’ of Durham down to 1590. Liberally endowed from the outset by Edgar, it received many further gifts and privileges from later Scottish kings and other pious donors, until it became one of the wealthiest religious houses in Scotland. As with other religious houses, its wealth came from land ownership which brought income from timber management and from the rearing of sheep that produced wool for export.
The original church, built in Edgar’s time, was destroyed by King John of England in 1216, but was replaced by a greater and more magnificent church, which in turn was largely destroyed in 1545 during the great raid of the Earl of Hertford, which brought ruin also to the abbeys of Kelso, Dryburgh and Melrose.
The choir, however, though further damaged by forces of Oliver Cromwell in 1650, survives and constitutes the present Priory Church, although it was much changed in Victorian times, when it is assumed the freestanding arch was rebuilt.

Is discernment the same for people who want to become priests and do all priests and nuns have to go to and graduate from college?
So it depends on the religious order you want to join and/or whether a man wants to be a diocesan priest or not.
Religious orders are for the most part given a set of guidelines from the Vatican from which to follow, and those vows are separate from becoming a priest. Priestly ordinations are determined by the bishop where the man is becoming a priest or chooses to go to seminary, if he goes to seminary outside of the diocese he will be serving in.
For example, the seminary I'm most familiar with in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee has a, I believe, 4 year program to becoming a priest, and does not require an undergraduate degree, but it's greatly encouraged. This includes both schooling in theology and the Mass, as well as training, and then either included in those four years or separately, I'm not sure, there is 1 year as an associate priest at a parish, where they help out at Masses and learn what it's like to actually live as a priest on their own.
In comparison, a religious, both men and women, have usually a minimum of 5 years of formation before taking first vows, and generally 3 to 4 more years before taking first vows. This can change based on the religious order that you join, and a lot of times, orders of men will have some delay in certain parts of their vow process as the men study to become priests. The Augustinian order in America for example, has a few years for postulants and novices before first vows, then anywhere from 2 to 5 years as a junior brother before taking final vows, and sometimes in that time they will become priests, and sometimes they become priests after that. They also often go to school and get different masters or doctorates, depending on what they are going to do, because they are a teaching order.
The order I was going to join has a much longer formation period because it was a cloister, so there was a minimum of 9 years before final vows, and no more than 12. Not counting the years spent as an aspirant, that is, before entering the convent and preparing to leave your worldly life behind, which has a minimum of 1 year. Some religious orders require a degree and some don't, usually the ones that teach or do earthly ministry require it. A lot of cloisters will only because it gives you life experience, but if you don't have one, it's not really a big deal, assuming you have work experience.

[IMAGE TEXT: a thread of two posts from ‘aradhna.’ @/thebitterbeast.bsky.social.
POST ONE: me whenever it is clear either via marketing, interviews or the media itself that yet another Star Wars writer/director is ignoring the Buddhist and other Eastern influences on the Jedi to portray them as a flavour of Christian/Catholic and/or an institution not a religious order of monks:
POST TWO: *looks at said media* oh so this is just licensed fanfic then.
(hey Disney if you're just licensing fanfic now, I can direct you to some great ones that actually respect the real life religions and cultural influences of the main draw to Star Wars. heck, I wrote some!)]

i don't know who needs to hear this today but the jedi would not be body-shy
especially during the war. some would be uncomfortable, sure, or even heavily dislike being nude and/or bathing around others, but the point of that is that would be respected as a choice. there is a very large difference between preferring not to be nude around others, for cultural religious or personal reasons, versus being ashamed. nothing you can do can convince me jedi would be ashamed or embarrassed of their or others' bodies.
why. why would the jedi think nudity undignified. why would they turn their noses up at it as unseemly, rather than a choice and preference

You think THIS site and THIS generation have no media literacy? Guys I read a twitter conversation yesterday between middle aged men where among other things they said the fascist allegory in the Star Wars prequels is the Jedi. That the Jedi having a strict code makes them “arguably fascist.” My god. Award for the least media comprehension on God’s green earth goes to cishet boomer sci-fi fans.

On November 21st 1591 a group of Carmelite Friars (also known as White Friars) established a Lepers Hospital in a “sheltered spot called Greenside, near the northern skirts of the Calton Hill”
The Greyfriars or Franciscan church (of the Observant branch of the order) stood in the Grassmarket until it was destroyed by fire in 1845. The Whitefriars of Carmelites did not settle in Edinburgh until 1518. Their house of Greenside, near the Calton Hill, was transformed at the Dissolution into a lepers' hospital.
The 18th century  Maitlands History of Edinburgh, gives us a wee bit about the area;
"King James II. by his charter of the twentieth of his reign anno 1456 granted to the Edinburghers a spot of ground on the northeastern side of the Craigend gate, and eastern side of the pathway Leading to Leith whereon to hold Tilts and Tournaments at presents Called the Greenside, This piece of ground in the year 1520 was by the Common Council of Edinburgh with consent of the King and Archbishop of St. Andrews, granted to certain Carmelite Friars to erect a convent on which proved of no long duration. for John Robertson a merchant in Edinburgh, pursuant to a vow, on his receiving a signal mercy from god erected by a licence from the town council, on the Site of the Said Monastery an house or hospital for leprous persons to be under the direction & government of the Said Council who appointed a committee to Settle the Same who drew up certain very severe Constitutions to be observed by them, under no less a penalty than that of being hanged; and to shew they were in earnest ordered a gibbet to be erected at one end of the said hospital to enforce the observation of their Statutes."
When the Hospital was in existence the field in which it was situated was called 'The Hangman's Acre'. This name arose in consequence of a Gallows being placed at each corner of the building on which the keeper had the power without trial to hang any leper whom he found escaping The monastery was built in 1526. At the north end of Greenside Row is a pump which was formerly Rood Well of Greenside belonging to Friars.
Recently a project saw forensic artists digitally reconstruct faces from skulls found in a cemetery at St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, including a woman with leprosy, who may have been a tailor, and a man who was likely a peasant.  So it seems the lepers may have only escaped the confnes of the leper colony in death.
Archaeologists initially excavated the cathedral's cemeteries in the 1980s and 1990s, ahead of a construction project and subsequent archaeological investigations. In all, the researchers found more than 100 burials dating from the 12th to the mid-16th centuries. The skeletons were then archived for future study.
The woman with leprosy, as seen in the pic, was likely between the ages of 35 and 40 when she died in the mid-15th to 16th century. The extent of her leprosy lesions suggests that she contracted the disease in adulthood.
Greenside is now the home to the Omni Centre, housing bars and restaurants. Rockstar games also have their offices in another part of the complex leading up to Leith Street.

I wrote a bit more for this story and felt like drawing the main characters + a new one in their "clothes" before everything went bad, so to speak.
Anyway, here we have Rosomil and Lodwin both in armour and wearing the insignia of the Order of the Crimson Hand (I might change it in the future) as well as Sunila in her novice dress.
You can read it over here
I also experimented with a different art style and I've to say I really like it

Let me make this very clear:
When it comes to Hellenic Polytheism, there is no human religious authority, especially not one that stands before or speaks for the gods.
It does not matter what someone tells you. It does not matter if they claim to be a priestess/priest of X deity or a messenger for Y deity. It does not matter what their supposed past life was like. It does not matter if they claim to be the literal fucking Oracle of Apollo.
No one has the right to tell you how to worship the gods. No one has the right to assert their authority over your religion.
And most of all, remember that people can and do lie.

Concept: the justice league finds out that Blaze and Satanus, the rulers of hell, are kids of their ‘even more of a boy scout than Superman’ coworker’s “boss” and think Shazam is the Christian God. They ask Billy really vague questions that lead Billy into confusing them even more and they become convinced that Marvel’s Wizard guy is God with a capital G and Marvel’s either an angel or the second coming of Jesus.
Meanwhile Shazam doesn’t even know what the Bible is and his knowledge about religion is so outdated he still thinks Solomon’s Judaism is new age and not worth his time to research such a ‘fad’ religion, but he knows humans will make a religion out of anything as well as bastardize existing ones and very well could have mixed up actual tales that involve him, his allies, and his children into some sort of melting pot of a religion.
So when someone finally asks Marvel outright if his “boss” is God, Billy goes ‘wait… old guy in white robes and sandals, with long white hair and a beard… lives in space… aka the “heavens”, whose a ghost(Holy Spirit), and knows everything(historama)??? I need to dig deeper into this hold on guys’ and goes off to ask the wizard.
So when Billy asks the Wizard he just tells Billy “well, my boy, if so many things match up, maybe it is so and the tales of myself and my champions grew so estranged from their origins or mixed in with other beliefs that it can explain the things that aren’t true to our reality.”
Then The Canonical Character To The DC Universe, Jesus of Nazareth, shows up.

hey this isn’t aimed at anyone in particular but I’m saying it for the record here: if I tell you no, please stop messaging me about fundraisers and mutual aid.
I get enough messages that it’s impossible for me to keep up without devoting at least half an hour each day, when I’m not even on tumblr that long most days. Me having a boundary about this isn’t a moral failing, it’s a lifeboat for me on my own blog.
In my personal life I’m already advocating and donating literally as much as I can spare. This is not me not caring, it’s just me not willing to interact with that on the one place I go online to not interact with irl news and world events for the most part.
I cannot be upset all the time. I cannot be upset everywhere. I cannot use all my emotional and mental energy fielding my own upset from ongoing events. My options are to hold boundaries about this or stop coming online at all.
I’m all for sharing information and signal boosting to reasonable extents, but the scale of it this year is so large and so enduring that it is literally not possible to for me to participate on every account I have. I’ve previously shared links to Gaza eSIM donations and a major hub of verified Go Fund Mes here and elsewhere online. We, the online humans, know how to look those things up ourselves by now. There are many, many people choosing to do advocacy work, and right now, I can’t be one of them.
If you’re extremely upset when I tell you I can’t share/donate right now about a Gaza family or personal fundraiser you ask me to share here, just unfollow and block me. That’s what those buttons are for. Protect your own emotions and energy and get me off your feed instead of staying upset and continuing to engage with online people or content that upsets you.
Please don’t send repeated angry messages based on manufactured purity politics and moral outrage into my messages and inbox when I exercise the right to run my own blog.
#and on that note#I also think some people need to sit down and ask themselves#if their old end times anxieties and fears and preparations and word spreading#haven’t filtered straight into a new non religious end of society and end of modern world order anxiety that they’re pushing on other peopl#even if it is the end times#you cannot change that by beating your own anxieties into other people’s heads#people can care MORE when they are GIVEN ROOM TO BREATHE#first rule of sustainable activism is you can’t do it constantly and you can’t push it on people constantly#you have to pace it and you have have have have HAVE to play long games#short term activism burns you out and if it leads to full despair from burnout it can get you killed via depression#it’s not a joke#there’s a reason your elders have books and community lore about healthy activism even in times of crisis#they lived it. they learned from it. learn from them.#spend your time doing things that can make real impacts.#do little things online but unless you’re an actual information hub you shouldn’t be posting constantly about it#people won’t even want to follow you anymore eventually because that’s not why they followed you#and then you have no audience for your important message anyway.#I know this. I learned it myself on other accounts.#please. stop. harassing me.#how is harassing me going to make me MORE willing to change my mind and post? just because you demanded it?#I am an autonomous person#this is my ONE curated space on the website#you have a multitude of tags and other users#don’t waste energy on a person who already told you no. let’s call that activism rule number two#spend your energy where it’s not likely to be wasted#you’re needed for a long haul#act like it 😭#and stop spamming me 😭#hey little star whatcha gonna queue?
