If, or when a friend...

Judges you for enjoying/not enjoying a character the "right way"

Constantly belittles, mocks or insults a character you enjoy in a way that is not meant to be teasing or sarcastic

And does not afford you the same courtesy of reserving or preventing themselves from speaking negatively of a character you enjoy, but they do not...

Then they are probably not your friend. Or at least, a very good one.

And if a "friend" ever tries to FORBID you from enjoying, talking about, or even passively liking a character? They are DEFINETLY not someone you should want to be friends with. Life is far too short, and you should love yourself enough to not put up with cop-like behavior from someone who claims to be your "friend".

It does not matter how much older or younger they are than you. It does not matter how long the two of you have been friends. When someone tries to police how you enjoy things, you should take a serious look within yourself and decide if you would find yourself happier if you no longer had to deal with that kind of bullshit.

Because that's what it is.

And on a similar, shorter note, if someone ever tries to apply their self-chosen cut-off point of what they consider "canon" to YOU: tell them they have no right to police you like that.

And the sooner you do it, the better. Trust me on that.

Never give someone the ability to determine what is canon FOR you.

When I tell you that I have read fanfic characterizations so OOC that they'd classify as an original character, trust me I have read THOUSANDS. But you know what I don't do? :) Tell the author of those fanfics that they might as well classify that character as an original character if they're going to write them like one. Because that's fucking rude. People don't owe you your preferred characterizations. The back button is free.

i really like giffing. i know we talk constantly about people not appreciating gifmakers anymore and how the numbers are dropping and everything which is true, and maybe it's because i'm relatively new at this, but seeing little things that i want to have in my blog edited in a way that i find pretty and it has the captions the way i like, it makes me feel genuinely good even if it doesn't get a lot of notes bc ultimately, i did it for me and i'm happy with it.

A few people on this site and AO3 need to remember that your experiences and claims about fanfiction are not universal.

There are always going to be people out there who DO read all of these things. But there are unfortunately circumstances in our day to day lives that may delay us from getting around to reading that material in a "timely manner", and it may be some time before we can finally get around to it.

It would also be dishonest of me to pretend:

That, yes, there does kind of tend to be less people interested in Canon x OC material in particular.

That it's not entirely feasible (or responsible) for many of us with academic, occupational, or just plain ol' adult responsibilities to binge-read that promising fic series about our Blorbos From Our Shows right this second.

That it's a bit daunting to read something 10k+ in terms of word count (or whatever your personal threshold is) - and that at times the reason for it comes from an angle of specific disabilities or conditions [ADHD, dyslexia, low/impaired vision, etcetera.]

But I promise there ARE people out there who would probably love to read your work. What they don't love, however, is seeing frequent post after post complaining about being So, So Sad™ that people aren't reading your hard work.

I'm not saying you're not allowed to feel a certain way about it: You are allowed to be sad. You are allowed to complain. But constantly complaining and guilting people about it only drives them further away.

Readers are a bit like cats: the harder you try to get their attention and force them to interact with you, the more they'll want to stay away.

It’s alright if your S/I isn’t a mirror image of the “real” you, if it’s an idealized version of what you wish you could be for whatever reason— to be more appealing to your F/O, more attractive or stronger or braver than you feel you are in the waking world.

Even if it’s only a mask you wear to feel worthy of your F/O, they see it and see you. No matter how you present yourself your F/O adores you endlessly and there’s no shame in wanting to be something more… Yet there’s courage in being who you are already as well.
