How would you characterize the turtles (+ April, splinter ) as to help people know how to right them like? I wanna write them but im kinda nervous about mischaracterizing them.

But then I thought fuck it...

I used to be so worried about not perfectly representing characters and I think that's something that held me back from ever posting my work. Like I have a version of Leo in my head and maybe it's slightly different from perfect canon Leo or the version of Leo in your head. But then I thought isn't that something that's so special about fanfic? We all get to add our own little spin to these characters that we all already love.

So my advice would always be please write for you and for the joy of writing and hopefully it will connect with someone. Don't stress too too much about whether it perfectly aligns with the canon. We are all just having fun here :)

As for how I personally characterize everyone:

I don't wanna ramble too too much. As I think with characterization there is a lot going on and I grab from multiple canons when I want. I'm happy to go more in depth if anyone wants to dm me or chat in comments.

Simplistically, I think helps to narrow things down to what are this character's quirks and what are their flaws.

Leo: Overly anxious eldest child, who's a bit of a hopeless romantic with a bit of a perfectionist complex. To make up for his insecurity he puts his all into everything. Also an optimist that sees the best in everyone. Maybe that's not always a good thing...

Raph: Tough exterior but extremely caring and protective on the inside. Very sensitive and doesn't want anyone to know it. Values family above all but hopes to create meaningful relationships outside the family.

Donnie: Unknown child prodigy with an insane talent for computer science. Excels in school while putting in zero effort but feels very lackluster compared to his brothers, especially when it comes to fighting.

Mikey: Little ray of sunshine with a heart of gold that wants to be taken seriously. Has been sort of type casted as baby brother.

Splinter: Helicopter parent and worried father to quadruplets, maybe a bit too strict and overbearing but he means well. Maybe he's even got a few secrets.

April: Loyal, passionate and motivated with high career ambitions but a bit insecure and very socially anxious.

I can keep adding forever with little details and so on but this is sort of the gist in my brain for everyone when I'm writing.

When I move on to actually writing a story I think about what is this character's motivation/goal and what is holding them back from that.

So in mm the boys' goal is to be normal teenagers and attend high school but the fact that they are mutant turtles is holding them back from that. And then like add Cynthia Utrom, TCRI, and Superfly to the mix...

Anyway, I hope I didn't ramble too much! I love talking about writing stuff but just to reiterate this is simply my opinion and how I think of things. I don't think there's truly a wrong way to write fanfic. We are all just out here having fun after all!

oh yes this is one of my favorites!

Band AU

Okay so for this one I actually have stuff written down for it already. Copy/pasted from my notes is their roles in the band:

Arlo: Manager and synth player

Blyke: Drummer

Isen: songwriter, PR guy, and assorted behind-the-scenes tasks

John: backup singer & bassist 

Remi: electric guitar player

Seraphina: Lead singer

Arlo as the manager mostly because I can’t see him not taking the leadership role, and synth player because my brother and I thought piano fit his vibes but we swapped it when we decided it was a rock band. Isen’s behind the scenes because I imagine him staying out of the spotlight. John is on bass mostly because bass strings are really hard to break, and therefore really dramatic to have him break one in the heat of whatever dramatic climax moment there is.

I also wrote a little mock ao3 summary for the au:

Rei’s band was selected to participate in an upscale, annual music event, with a chance to win a lot of money. It’s a tournament style competition for which they have a year to prepare X amount of songs. Not only do they have the chance to win money, but it’s an incredible opportunity to get their names out there, and winning could even make their whole career. Unfortunately, Rei dies before the competition, leaving the rest of the band grief-stricken. Arlo steps up as the manager, and Remi as the singer.

“I can’t do it,” said Remi.

“What?” Arlo asked.

“I’m telling you while there’s still time. I can’t sing and play at the same time with out screwing up one or the other. We have to find another singer.”

Or: Seraphina and John audition for a band.

I also wrote out the start of a plot outline but it’s in word vomit format so I’m not posting it like that. Something that definitely happens though is that Zeke and his cronies are also competing, and they play dirty and try to sabotage our main characters. Also they definitely play a tribute song for Rei.

This one is… probably the most developed au I have? Ive got a vague plot, even. Really this only exists because I thought their abilities could make really cool effects for a concert.

headcanons centering main cast’s passive abilities

I just think having your power constantly manifest itself in some way would be pretty impactful on your life actually

If Remi goes into a room with a lot of complex electrical stuff going on (a computer lab maybe) she’ll start getting a headache from how overstimulating it is. She functions as a portable phone charger which Blyke and Isen take full advantage of. She can identify any circuitry problem by just. feeling how the electricity is flowing through the device

Seraphina always knows exactly what time it is down to the millisecond. John always asks her what time it is just to annoy her. 

arlo tried to get more piercings once, but it didn’t work because his passive defense stopped it from happening. Any sort of invasive medical procedure does Not work on him. This includes IVs and needles in general (he hasn’t gotten vaccinated in 2 years). honestly i have a million headcanons centering arlo’s passive and his theoretical medical trauma

John uses his aura detection to sneak up on people and jumpscare them. by people i do mean arlo. 

isen’s (not a high tier but i had the idea and wanted to put it here) eyes are based on tracking movement, so he has a really hard time with focusing on things that are stationary. what im saying is that his ability gave him both adhd and dyslexia. he has hair trigger reflexes that let him crush Blyke at video games which pisses Blyke off to no end.

'give me a chance' could mean a lot of things, couldn't it? the paperback she was still holding was then lowered down to her lap. bunny supposed that if she ever hoped to find out what remilia meant, she just just be direct with her.

and direct she was, ❝ hmm... well, if you were to tell me what you are referring to when you say 'one chance,' perhaps i may be willing to grant it :D ❞ bunny mask suddenly grasped the concrete wall she sat upon with both hands at that moment and leaned forward towards remilia. showing open body language towards other's was a good way to indicate that you were willing to communicate with them. if bunny wasn't mistaken, that is. an idea popped up in the back of her head then which made her reconsider her view of the statement the other had made entirely, ❝ wait a minute. i think i actually have heard that somewhere before, stranger. do you mean a romantic chance? ❞
