Science Communication post for school part II: Madagascar hissing cockroaches

This time we looked at light preference and food preference in cockroaches

MHCs are nocturnal detritivores (meaning they eat decaying plant and animal matter). They produce a hissing sound by forcing air out of their spiracles.

The experiment was conducted using choice chambers to give the cockroaches the option to choose between a light and dark area, and later, choose to eat a carrot or slice of pepperoni. They were deprived of food but not moisture for 5 days leading up to the experiment.

The fact they are nocturnal may make it seem like they would prefer the dark. However, at least at time of experimentation (early afternoon) the cockroaches were about an even split on preference.

About half of the cockroaches didn't eat. It's unclear if the majority not eating is due to time of day or if they weren't hungry. Those that did eat seemed to have a preference for the carrot, although a few ate the pepperoni.

In order to record data for this experiment we used google sheets. Nearly everyone wrote down data despite working in small groups. The problem with this is that we did not use any tactics to make sure data wouldn't be repeated, perhaps group numbers would have been a good idea. So I ask you, dear random bug people on tumblr, don't do that! Make sure your data makes sense and is accurate. Even ignoring the small sample size this would not be a good study because I don't know if the data is accurate! Good data is important

I mention this in the endnote, too, but: this fic has existed in some form or another since November of 2023 (less than a month after I witnessed the end of the video game). Isn't that amazing. I experienced Stranger of Paradise, got possessed (oneshot demon), got possessed (monstrous longfic demon), got possessed (AFM) & got possessed (this) within, like, a couple of weeks? I think? My first draft of Keeper is from like a month and a half later, also.

Then may I suggest everyone go and read @a-slight-sweet-fiction's Welcome to Night Vale fic Every Version Of You. It's 600,000 words, and still being updated! I've read the whole thing, and parts of it... two or three times based on when it had been updated up to that point. It is, legitimately, an absolutely phenomenal fic, I cannot stress it enough!

It's forced me to consider (in the best ways!) pacing and what exactly the limits of a relationship can be! (The whole fic has, thus far, taken place over the course of roughly three days!) It's probably my favourite wtnv fic I have ever read. I cannot recommend it enough.

Mal is a Clown-Face tiger moth! They reside in the Moth Kingdom and are a royal scientist. They are not very well regarded by the public, most people just get concerned if you were to mention them and theyre like ''oh, you mean,,,, THAT guy,,,,'' as their experimentation process could be considered, reckless and lacking proper morals. (most of their experiments were on themselves! they used to look reallly different than they are now)

They would be the type of bug to eat something incredibly radioactive just to see what happens. Oh and they recently had some research returned to them from a research team sent to bugaria (they reside in a land a little ways away from bugaria). Something about a fungus, I wonder what will happen next, exciting!

We think you should vote for them because we need more unhinged scientists in this world and what better option than Mal! (they even did their own top surgery) Mal would be incredibly happy for the vote

Born to a farming family in the golden settlement, Mirach is the eldest of her siblings and helps her folks out on their aphid farm. When not on the farm, they're usually out helping the community with day-to-day tasks or hanging out with their bestie, Cypherus.

Mirach is quite head strong and has a strong sense of justice which often results in her getting into fights she isn't able to finish, leading to Cypherus having to bail them out. While her skills in fighting are lackluster, she is incredibly resourceful and their quick thinking has often gotten them outta a tight spot.

Mirach dreams of traveling one day but feels responsible to take care of the farm, for now, she'll settle for Cypherus' stories about his time outside of Bugaria

instead of like. actually working on the numerous assignments i have due (like a nerd) i instead spent half an hour making a program to find all unique consonant/vowel* patterns used for canon troll names**. like a nerd

(*i just broadly considered every "y" to be a vowel because that seemed easier. i dont know if that's grammatically accurate and tbh i dont really care. what do i look like an english major)
