1. ​In the midst of a lengthy ban explanation, the team member who wrote it confessed that there were several times where I broke the rules and they didn't ban me. Book review 2023 II Silence of the lambs

Silence of the lambs / Thomas Harris

I lied this is not the second book I read this year. I read two other books. But they are in german(and i think one is also translated into italian ?) Anyways just trust me on this ok.

So Silence of the lambs. I want to say i didn`t read the first book(red dragon) so i don't know the beginning. But I think it is not so important for the understanding of silence of the lambs.(sorry Hannibal NBC fans)

I liked it, it got slow every now and then but thats not a dealbreaker for me. - Lowkey I am this close to passing out what the actual fuck -. I think the story is famous enoughthat I don't need to go into too much detail, so I am going to concentrate on the themes and characters. I saw a review saying they didn't like the misogynie in the book. And that it made it worse, I respectfully disagree. The misogynie is part of the theme and is a topic(it is more an underlying theme than a maintheme, but it is present enough to discuss it) in this book. Clarice, the main character, is a woman in the 80/90s working in a male dominated field. Most men don't take her seriously and/or are only flirting with her and not worklíng with her. A classical female experience lol. Furthermore the charcters discuss and deal with the misogynie in a real way. One scene that i found very good was when Crawford said something in the lines of "this is a boys job" to get Clarice out of the room. And while it was obviously not malicious Clarice told Crawford that she knows he meant it well but it set a bad example for the rest of the men in the police if he does something like that i front of them. Crawford then acknowledges his mistake and tells her he will not do it again.

This was just an example, and while there is a discussion to have about the "effortless beauty that no man can resist while she doesn`t put much effort into her appearance " trope I think in the end Clarice is much more than a pretty face. She is smart she knows what she wants and she has a strong mind. Fun fact Scully from the X-Files is based on Clarice from the movie adaptation. ( I could write an 8 page essay on the similarities and differences of these two, maybe I will someday, not soon though, I have another paper due soon about Petrarc and Dante)

Conclusion: I liked the characters, I liked the themes (misogynie in the workforce, Trans topics handled nicely and delicately -> I am not trans myself so take my opinion with a grain of salt)

Well, not you.

YEEEEE (im just gonna ramble a bunch about the backstory i have so far but ill put it in bullets so its easier to follow lol i apologize for it being long as fuck-)

OKAY SO,,, first of all,,, doyle and abbey timeline,,,, [i am looking respectfully]

in this au, they get back together and have a sort of ‘lovers pretending to be enemies’ chaotic on again/off again hookup thing off to the side just between the two of them thru like Most of the final season, they try to keep it a secret (especially doyle who doubts the saturdays would be hAPPY if he was seeing her again) but in the end, saturdays ofc find out, probably are unsure about it at first, but she gains enough of their trust to be there for the big finale battle in the weird world mansion.

when shit goes down and argost becomes the vessel for the two opposing kurs (regular kur, and the anti kur from zak monday) and they like. explode his matter or w/e, i imagine instead of kur just completely disappearing, the ‘anti kur’ gets shot back to its universe, while original kur gets forced into a new vessel in this universe... the closest of which happens to be the unborn child abbeys unknowingly carrying. basically, what if the two kurs just LOOKED like they evaporated but actually did what happens when you try to like tape two same sides of a magnets together and they YEETED-

So thats how we have Parker, their firstborn daughter! and this... also implies ‘Parker Monday’ exists which. 8^) i havent thought about yet so forgive me on that but hoo, 

they dont know parker is kur, they got no idea and rly just assume kur is gone for good. but after they find out abbeys pregnant (which is a huge emotional trip for both of them in its own right) they do eventually sort of agree they dont want their kid exposed to that whole world of mystery. like, ik its a vital thing to the whole family, and ik these two people were probably voted least likely to ‘settle down’ in high school, but i cant imagine they didnt escape the kur/zak situation without a LOT of trauma, so while the saturdays stay in the cryptozoology field, doyle and abbey slowly pull away from the mystery and mercenary stuff, and also instead of going for big dollar lifestyle settle with ‘independently wealthy’ parenting.

also, neither of them really . grasp the concept that theyve even started a family, and are ‘together’, and that this is REAL, until around when she gets pregnant with their second daughter, Kendall. and then theyre like. oh nooo wait are we actually like boyfriend and girlfriend EWW-

when kendall is born parker is 3, and the next like 10+ years are pretty smooth sailing. as far as what the kids know/see, they probably know the cryptids when theyre little but. (tw animal death sORRY TO BE DARK I JUST??????) idk,, how long komodo dragons live/how old komodo already is and i definitely dont know Anything about giant prehistoric birds and am not even sure if science knows that lifespan, so. im not sure how long they could really be in each others lives??? i almost imagine parker would have memories of them that she assumes she remembers wrong, like “oh yeah they used to have a lizard and a bird... my imaginative little kid brain thought they were a komodo dragon and a dinosaur”, and as for fisk im still working on it but i . actually kind of imagine he might have a much longer lifespan (since lemurians are like ancient or w/e? and also if hes by dna like a gorilla cat or w/e gorillas at least live long af) and also feel like once he got older and settled down a bit he might live somewhere in the woods, maybe even his old tree? and the saturdays see him ALL the time obviously, but hey zaks gotta go to college eventually, a gorilla cats gotta eat bugs in forest, we all have to grow up and leave the nest sometime,

so idk the last time parker has actually seen fisk and she might assume he was an imaginary friend or smth but, 1. if i do write a fic they absolutely have to meet again, 2. overall the vibe is they know the saturdays are cryptozoologists, like, the same way josh gates does destination truth, seeking answers and studying, they dont really. know that theyre REAL. to them its like, a hypothetical science. (this is also part of why they dont realize parker is kur, she isnt around cryptids and therefore whenever her powers would actually show up they wouldnt be recognized) anyways parker isnt embarrassed or put off by it but just thinks its a little wacky, meanwhile kendall is obsessed with the world of mystery/paranormal/cryptic lol

speaking of the girls personalities;;;

parker is like. not really normie/preppy, even if she seems it at first glance, shes nice and has a good head on her shoulders but also is a teenage girl (inherently unhinged) and shes THEIR teenage girl (+5 feral) so despite her success and charm shes also very witty/crass when she wants to be, and deep down shes closer to the kind of person that would on pure inexplicable instinct put something random in your mouth when you’re yawning so you bite down on it afterwards. or like. that video of the girl singing in the bathroom while her friends curl their hair and she grabs the curler to use as a microphone before realizing its burning hot??? shes. the voice of reason, but the voice is usually shrieking in fear, making a cursed joke, or half the time whatever shes saying is actually smart. she kinda wants to go to college and travel, but struggles with indecisiveness and anxiety, so she has no idea where to go, what to major in, etc. and is again kinda just livin thru the typical teen life in that regard

kendall on the other hand is like. weird kid culture, the kind of kid that believes they are secretly a new supernatural creature each year (mermaid phase, werewolf phase, alien phase, etc), probably completely accidentally starts cults or witch covens at school (didnt realize teaching peers how to become ‘blood brothers’ and ‘make potions’ from puddles and stolen school supplies would be taken so seriously by parents) , very into emo/scene/punk/alt culture but not rly in an overtly dark/edgy way, more of a having fun and expressing self way. she wants answers for everything, really loves mysteries and being open minded, and definitely a rebel/adventurer at heart, even if she gets naive or in over her head sometimes.

the girls get along well! parker is not dismissive of kendall she just. isnt really into the same stuff/is more freaked out by it most of the time, but she would tag along on certain adventures, especially if it was to keep her safe. and kendall definitely directs gentle mockery towards parker a lot but does see her as a good role model and guiding figure, their bond is really strong!

doyle and abbey prob decide to say fuck it and get married after kendall is born, they probably have a few rough patches but nothing is more important to them than the kids now and in the end they understand each other better than anyone else so . canon tension idk her! family ftw! power couple! they intimidate the teacher during parent teacher conferences together hand in shady little hand !

their parenting style is exactly what one would imagine, 70% fun and sass and controlled chaos where theyre the bigger children than their children, 15% ‘this is how you hack the government and dual wield swords-- i was not supposed to teach you that im sorry’, and 15% actual guidance / emotional depth / etc. flaws might be overcoming their own immaturity for the first few years, and then being lowkey overly protective (while claiming they arent, but just bc you semi jokingly tell parker she should join the football team doesnt mean you dont actually hide 60% of ur life from her and check that her bedroom windows are locked every night and have 24 people listed in her school emergency contacts and used to cut up her food till she was 7 and-)

so abouT THE BABY BOY (Phoenix), 1. his middle name is leonidas bc im gay and i love emotional turmoil babes , 2. fully unironically the idea behind such a late pregnancy is abbey would be mid fourties when hes born right. so like. Love your comments on D being "queen of the ashes." It's interesting to note, D isn't obsessed with ruling or being an effective queen or making compromises or learning how to not fail the common people. She's obsessed with power. She started out with nothing - no power, no people, no armies, not even really a title worth anything more than “the daughter of that mad king everyone hated”. She grew power slowly over time, bit by bit with sheer stubbornness and pride. She didn’t always have power - but she is obsessed with it now after shes gotten a taste. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Also, she has had the love of the common people - sometimes. Her brother and her were helped by loyalists growing up. As Khaleesi with Drogo, the Dothraki grew to love her. When most left after their Khal died, a few stayed with her, and their loyalty and love was reborn thrice when she rose from the flames. These people followed her when she had nothing but 3 newborn dragons amidst starvation and certain death.

Afaik, not a single unsullied dropped their weapon and ran when she “freed” them. Grey Worm says the best day of his life is when Dany freed him. When she freed the slaves of Meeren they praised her and loved her for freeing her - at first. Some slaves wanted to go back into slavery because it was what they were comfortable with. The masters hated her for obvious reasons.

Every where she went she saw people praising her, giving her a new title to slap on, worshipping her and her dragons. If there were people who hated her - she ignored them because…idk denial? Willful ignorance? Cockiness? She likes to think of herself as a savior and that she knows better than the common people. She started off with kindness as her motivation - she didnt like seeing people abused and enslaved like she was by her brother. But shes forgotten that now. She just wants power and revenge.

But “love and devotion” is definitely *not* something Dany lacks. Dothraki, Jorah, Beric, Grey Worm, Daario, slaves, red priestesses, Tyrion, Varys, High Garden, Dorne - to Dany, everywhere she goes is paved with roses and people who adore her. Even if thats not always true. But to her it is. (and, most of her “friends” are actually not equal to her. She doesnt allow herself to have any true equals. Even Missande is still technically her subordinate. Dany says she wants council but often ignores it for what she wants to do anyway.)

She hasn’t changed her style since the very beginning. Screaming for and taking what she thinks she is entitled to. She rules with fire, and by “buying” loyalty, in a way, by freeing slaves. Shes not a queen, she hasn’t learned how to rule - she comes in, fucks shit up, then heads out to a new place. She hasnt changed tactics at all or shown any sort of learning - and if she has any character development at all - its to become more darker and power hungry. She never listens to her council - often they tell her to use mercy, she doesnt, and then it bites her in the ass.

This is the complete opposite of Jon. Jon at least now is showing mercy because his personal revenge is NOTHING compared to the coming storm. He helped the Free Folk because he got to know them, grew empathy for them, sees them as people. He doesn’t see the free folk as being indebted to him, or his army now because he helped them. They choose to fight because its also their life on the line. He never expected to become Lord Commander or even KitN. He doesn’t feel entitled. He doesn’t rule with fire or fear. He rules with respect and by fighting for the survival of the people - not to get more power for himself. He truly is a ruler for the people. Started from humble beginnings as a bastard.

so - Targbang. I have no idea how that will make any sense in the plotline tbh. Unless my post about Jon screwing the first non-sister he sees to let off some steam holds true. Or maybe she seduces him (I frankly cant see Jon initiating sex first with ANYONE)

I have lots of Jonerys friends who are whole heartedly rooting for them as endgame. I just cant see it. They are totally different in their goals, their motivations, their personalities, their methods. Dany conquered and claimed lands - Jon was always VOTED into his positions of power. Chosen by the people - he didn’t kick the door in and proclaim himself king.

I cant see Dany playing fair with Jon, allying with him or being concerned with his fight against the white walkers. Shes just too cocky to put her quest for power aside. Shes growing restless. She wants the iron throne now. And she kills people who are in her way for the iron throne, so if she finds out he’s a Targ, she might not be too happy about that. (or maybe shell be happy to have another Targ - but come on, she killed the last remaining one)

once Jon hears or sees how Dany chooses to rule/fight/win, he would lose. his. cool. She is a villain on paper (except the whole freeing slaves, which is probably her single only redeeming quality) The entire show has shown that a quest for power is only sought by those dark of heart. She is more and more showing traits of the mad king - the show keeps blatantly pointing them out. Foreshadowing her potential to turn into him.

I honestly think she will become full dark at least by the end of this season. She might have a redeeming moment near the end of the series, but I honestly don’t think shes going to survive the show and her obsession with power and the iron throne will be her downfall. So even if Jon sleeps with her either before he finds out who she truly is or in a moment of weakness - an actual relationship cannot last. They are just too different people.

Also, Im REALLY hoping Varys and Tyrion will realize this and switch sides to take down evil!dany after shes full on corrupted by power. MUAHAHAHAHA

OK. rant over. Long post, sorry. TL;DR- I (mostly) totally agree with you. Thanks for the ask!

“Book Chat, Rudolph, Slender and the MIBs”

[Flux] Is walking along the edge of the water, just watching it and occasionally spotting Aqua rolling through the waves-

[Alexsezia] Is happily potting some small plants outside.

[Flux] Spots her- Oh, hello

[Alexsezia] Hey Flux. It's a nice day, isn't it?

-multiple cats- Trot over to Flux and busk on her dress hem or try to bat at her long hair.

[Flux] Smiles a little at the cats- Yes it is, I figured Notch could use some room to figure out his...  Tweet I believe it's called

[Alexsezia] What's a tweet?

[Flux] - I'm not certain, but I believe it has to do with the internet that humans have...  A way of communicating

[Alexsezia] Ah, that makes sense. He is techincally still missing out there.

[Flux] - Yes...  And it is a bit of a concern...  I don't wish for others to investigate where he's gone to much...

[Alexsezia] Wasn't he always kind of a recluse though?

[Flux] Shakes head- I believe TLOT has covered most of it with me...

[Aqua] Reaches over to sniff Alexsezia's face-

[Alexsezia] Boops Aqua's nose lightly- He's good at that kind of thing. Really found his calling. I'm happy for him, and Steve too.

[Aqua] Boops back- Boop!

[Alexsezia] Laughs even though she got a little wet. -You're feeling friendly today!

[Flux] - Is it not usually?

[Alexsezia] Usually... And you said a word?

[Aqua] - Boop!  Boop!

[Alexsezia] It's a start at least. Have you made friends with Stevie's Milotic yet?

[Aqua] Rubs themselves against the sand- Boooooooooooop!

[Alexsezia] I guess thats as good as I'm going to get. Do you want a scratch Aqua? - Curls and uncurls her fingers to demonstrate.

[Aqua] Watches the fingers curiously and moves closer-

[Alexsezia] Scratches Aqua's barbels and behind his head fins-

[Aqua] Trills-

[Flux] - They seem to enjoy that

[Alexsezia] Seems to be a common dragon thing.

[Flux] - An unintentional effect of their coding?

[Alexsezia] A small weakness. I wonder if that means you could tame a normal Enderdragon by getting on it's head and scracthing it behind the ears?

[Flux] - I'm certain if that suggestion were to reach the doctor they may just try

[Aqua] Glances at it's tail as a fish bumps against it-

[Alexsezia] Perhaps we should just keep quiet about it then- winks

[Flux] A rare small laugh leaves her-

[Alexsezia] I think we have more then our share of dragons as it is anyway.

[Flux] - Yes, although I haven't seen a few for a few days

[Alexsezia] Check the library.

[Flux] - I believe I will, have a good afternoon Alexsezia

[Alexsezia] You as well, oh hey. Have a snack to walk with, on me. - She pulls out a small yellowish stick and holds it out to her

[Flux] Frowns a little as she steps closer to accept it- What is it?

[Alexsezia] Mild chase. It's not strong like the blue, or brine only pungent like the gold.

[Flux] Looks at the chase, seeing the hint of magic which allowed Alexsezia to craft it.  She takes a bite- Mm, that is quite good.  The children in the village might enjoy it

[Alexsezia] I can't do the wheel cheat, but I have a little more you can have. - gives her a handful of sticks.

[Flux] - I will pass these along to somebody who can

- There is a car parked outside of Slender's mansion. There's no road, or even a path it could have arrived on to get there. It's just there. It's a late model black Chevy, low to the ground and certainly vintage, but there's a weird air of newness about it and even a whiff of new car smell as two men get out of it. For a moment they're lit from below by a very un-car-like bright blue glow from the instrument panel but then, it too winks out. The men are identical in black suits, hats and sunglasses, the only difference between them is the yellow tie sported by one and the grey tie of the other.

[Yellow MIB] knocks strongly on the huge front doors-

[Slender] Helping Sally with a bit of math work, he "frowns" when he hears the knocking- Sally, I will be right back- He goes to the front doors and opens them

[MIB] In unison. - Hello. - They sound weird, almost sped up -

[Yellow MIB] We are looking for a soul in a bag -

[Gray MIB] We also request a glass of water. Please.

[Slender] - I don't believe you have any business here.  And a glass of water can be found anywhere

[Yellow MIB] We will make this short.

[Gray MIB] We have information to exchange. - Is getting weirdly red in the face and starting to shake a bit.

[Sally] Peeks around the corner, having heard the request and is holding a glass of water- Papa?

[Gray MIB] Takes the water from the girl with an appreciative nod. He takes out a pill and uses exactly half the glass of water to swallow it. Immediately the redness and shaking vanishes-

[Yellow MIB] Is just staring at Slender, between ones facelessness and the others opaque glasses, it looks like an equal contest.

[Slender] - Go back inside Sally

[Sally] - But Papa...

[Slender] - Now

[Sally] - Okay...- She turns and skips back in to go back to her room, recognizing Slender's tone as a very serious one

[Gray MIB] More composed now - We are investigating a serious crime sir.

[Yellow MIB] But we are not here to detain.

[Slender] - You'll have to be more specific

[Gray MIB] A soul was exorcised and bound to an earthly collection of objects, by a person of interest.

[Slender] - I will still need something more specific than that

[MIBs] Share a confused look with one another-

[Yellow MIB] It appears like a burlap bag?

[Slender] - That is still not specific enough

[Gray MIB] Umm... - holds a hand far above his head - This tall? Red eyes?

[Slender] - Ah, that one, and what business do you have with it?

[Yellow MIB] We need to speak with him.

[Slender] - And I do not see why that is necessary

[MIBs] Just stand there staring at him-

[Offender] - Hey bro!  Do you know where the super glue is?

[Slender] WHY DO YOU NEED THAT!?

[Offender] - ...  Reasons

[MIB] Both lean at a rather impossible angle sideways to see Offender around Slender-

[Slender] - You do not need it Offender

[Offender] - But Rudolf might~

[Slender] - What did you do?

[Offender] - Nothing~

[Yellow MIB] At Offender - we wish to speak with him-

[Offender] - Ooo!  More fuck toys!

[Yellow MIB] eyebrow raise. -

[Slender] - Offender, please go away for now, go keep an eye on Sally

[Offender] - You got it bro!

[Rudolph] Slouches down the hall across from them

[both MIBs] Dart around Slenders legs in opposite directions and head for the monstrosity.

[Slender] Instinctually grabs them with his tendrils, his static filling the air- You do not have permission to enter my home...

[MIB] Both shake violently, their skins are cold and obviously non-human. The half glass of water shatters violently on the floor.

[Rudolph] Puzzled look, mentally - who are they?

[Slender] - They are apparently here for you- Slams the two MIB onto the ground

[MIB] Both crumple and then pull themselves quickly together with no sound whatsover. Yellow seems to have a wire running down his leg that goes into the flesh by his ankle.

[Gray MIB] Stalks over to Rudolph and gives him a rather bizare salute and flashes a small badge. He opens his mouth and there's a sudden time blink, a loss of no less then six minutes.

[Rudolph] Stands there stunned -

[Yellow MIB] Tell no one what you've seen.

[Slender] Growls, his static becoming near deafening in anger-

[Yellow MIB] Takes his hat off respectfully and walks to the door- Carry on good citizens.

[Gray MIB] Heads for the door as well- We will see you in time.

[Slender] Stalks after them, having gone into his hunting mode-

[MIBs] Enter the car and start the motor, the car pulls around the side of the house-

[Slender] Teleports over to that side-

-There is nothing. The car has vanished, along with it's peculiar inhabitants-

[Slender] Teleports back into the house- What, was that about?

[Rudolph] Looks subdued. - There are others like me. One has expired.

[Slender] - I see, I do not appreciate entities being able to find this sanctuary so easily Rudolph

[Rudolph] They are unknown to me. But they are hunting the one who did this to me.

[Slender] - And do you remember anything about them?

[Rudolph] Snarls- I remember more then enough about her... but I do not know where she is.

[Slender] - I see.  With my luck Splender would probably find her before I did...

[Lie] She and CP have been walking along their property with CP answering as many of Lie's questions as he can.  They were towards the very back of the property where the horses were, each wanting a bit of attention- So you really took the time to learn all of their names?

[CP] - Yes, just don't let Doc know that.  They'd have a giggle fit most likely

[Lie] - Why do you not want them to know?

[CP] Sighs- I, don't exactly like others knowing many things about me, only you...  I only open up to you.  You are my mate, my everything

[Lie] Smiles gently at him- You know, I'm starting to get kinda hungry...

[CP] - Stay here, I'll go get us something from the house- He turns and returns to the house, gathering some food from trunks and heading back to where he left Lie.  A sense of dread fills him as he gets closer and doesn't see his mate- Lie?- He looks around a bit frantically, not seeing her at all- Lie!

[Doc] Was snoring softly under the house and wakes up to him calling- Cp?

[CP] Goes rushing by to check in the green house-

[Doc] Uncoils and walks after him- Did Lie wander off?

[CP] - Shit I don't know!  I can't find her though!

[Doc] I'll help- Xe uses hir pinpoint and heads off towards Lie-

[Lie] Had wandered around the side of the hill into the tree's back there-

[Doc] Lie?

[Lie] - Hm?  Oh, hey

[CP] Is immediately relieved-

[Doc] Just doing a bit of exploring? You scared Cp.

[Lie] - Oh, sorry, I got curious....

-Behind Lie something moves-

[Doc] You might want to.. uh, come a bit closer.. quickly....

[Lie] - Why?

-A creeper emerges behind Lie and begins hissing-

[CP] Leaps at it, already summoning his sword-

[Lie] Quickly turns, her eyes going wide at the sight of the mob-

[CP] Quickly dispatches it with a couple of swift blows- And this is why we don't wander without a weapon

[Lie] - Weapons?

[Doc] Well yeah! There's monsters in every dark cave and nook.

[Lie] - I...  I didn't know...

[Doc] The sun burns them, but you have to stay out of dark places, okay?

[Lie] - Alright, I understand

[CP] -Come on, lets head back towards the house

[Doc] Escorts them- Generally the mobs won't give you too much trouble, but you've forgotten how to use your powers, so it's best to stick with a buddy.

[Lie] - Okay, I'll keep that in mind- As they're walking her hair starts twisting backwards as her hair tie reforms

[Doc] Sees the little movement and perks up-

[Lie] - Is everything okay?  Something seems to have gotten your attention...

[Doc] Your hair....

[Lie] Reaches back for it- Oh...  Is it, a hair tie?

[Doc] It's your hair tie. It's supposed to be there.

[Lie] - Oh!  Do I always have my hair back like this?

[Doc] Most of the time yes.

[Lie] - I see, I suppose it would keep it out of my face, although I don't think it will really help with my hair getting into lava...
