Old Man Hobbies

Johnny loves plants

When he had the tiny flat in Glasgow that he only kept for his leaves, he had a little window box for herbs

His quarters on base always featured a few succulents squeezed in on the desk amongst his notebooks

Even when it’s been rainy and his bad knee acts up (Simon got him a floral print knee rest and he silently cherishes the extra padding) he diligently trots out in his rubber clogs and tends their garden

He really enjoys nurturing the little shoots and sprouts and researches fertilizer types and soil airation and drainage and recommended pruning techniques

It feels good to use his hands. Hands, once soaked in war and blood and devastation; now only muddied with dark sweet earth of their home

Johnny’s yields aren’t much, certainly not enough to live on, but Simon always seems to have a recipe for whatever he can grow

Simon feeds the birds

He used to golf with Johnny’s Da but his arthritis really cranked up the last few years and he needs a hobby that requires less fine motor control

He sits on the porch, often a couple hours before Johnny’s awake, cuppa steaming and watches the day come alive over their garden

He starts with bread because he’s Manc as hell and has only dealt with the kind of streetwise pigeons that don’t even run away from people anymore

He learns online that songbirds love sunflower seeds and grains and he experiments with different blends, eventually hanging up a few feeders within view of the windows

Unfortunately this encourages squirrels, Simon hates the squirrels

Johnny is endlessly amused by this

COD Headcanons #2

Game Night at Simon & Johnny’s

Dinner isn’t always formal, sometimes it’s just takeaway hastily picked up on the way back from PT, or if Simon finds just the right cuts at the market they’ll cook up some steaks, without fail they all gather on Wednesday nights and share a meal. After sharing a mess for years it’s a hard habit to break.

The first time wasn’t planned exactly but Simon and Johnny didn’t have much when they were first discharged and moving in together. Kate’s Wife volunteered the use of her pickup truck and Price had a bottle of Nice Bourbon he needed to drop off. Gaz was already at the house and hey, they had to eat.

Afterwards when everyone was full and content, Price fishes a well-worn deck of cards out his pocket and they play Poker.

Game Night becomes a routine as well, never the same game 2 weeks in a row. The hall closet fills with various board games acquired from donation bins an garage sales, some with missing pieces but all worth atleast a try out. There are some rotating favorites.

Scrabble is off the table. Johnny’s answers are incomprehensible to everyone but Simon (and he still pretends to not understand Scots even after all this time)

Phase 10 seems like good game until Gaz wins too many damn times (he had secretly downloaded the iPhone version and become an absolute assassin at it)

Kate’s favorite is Cluedo, (Clue, she insists) she always plays Mrs Peacock, and ALWAYS wins. Simon picks Ms Scarlett and Johnny laughs until he realizes it gives him an edge, and that Kate has had an edge this whole time, and afterwards always picks Mrs White (lasses must have a general advantage) Price plays Colonel Mustard, Gaz plays Professor Plum and Kate’s Wife rotates characters to mindfuck the rest.

No one likes Monopoly, because fuck Monopoly.

Who brings it to the team? (Probably Laswell’s Wife but Simon DEFINITELY already knew about it/played it before and is quietly THRILLED)

So of course he offers to DM (control freak❤️)

Johnny is definitely excited about all of it and draws up a character sheet that is basically himself before he finds out that your character can be anything you want and then he hollers about needing more time

Gaz googles everything he can and finds out you can be a CARTOMANCER (he’s very good with cards you see 😉)

And that’s just off the top of my head idk ✌️💀

Oh 100%!!! I also love the idea of them having to avoid certain games because there are 2 couples in the group and they would just dominate the other 2 singles when it comes to team work.

ALSO I’m imagining MANY ideas if they ever cracked into DND but that might need its own post… many variables
