i’ve been in a reading slump as of late but a couple books that i can think of off the top of my head that have left an impact are
the secret history (my fav of all time it’s heavily annotated cause i’m a nerd💀)
crime and punishment (a doozy but worth it)
jane eyre (best book to start w to get into classics imo)
a little life (read it in three days cause i needed to finish it and get rid of it -10/10 i bc old write a whole rant ab this damn book it has some really good parts/quotes but not enough to make it worth it)
on earth were briefly gorgeous (ocean vuong is a poet so this novel read like poetry but in the best way)
OOOO I've read Crime and Punishment, and Jane Eyre! Excellent choice in classics!
I have A Little Life on my TBR and a physical copy in my very large pile already! People seem to either love it or hate it, I'm curious as to where I will fall on that spectrum lol. I'll have to check out The Secret History and On Earth Were Briefly Gorgeous! I will admit I sometimes have a love hate relationship with the New England based dark academia books seeing as how I em grew up in that lol I'm also the worst, I have so many annotation tabs but never end up using them and then get annoyed when I try and go back and reread parts.
So far this year I've read:
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Stars In Your Eyes by Kacen Callender ⭐️⭐️ ⭐️
Sanctuary of the Shadow by Aurora Ascher ⭐️
Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Rhythm, Chord & Malykhin by Mariana Zapata ⭐️⭐️
The Idea of You by Robinne Lee ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Even If It Breaks Your Heart by Erin Hahn ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Strung Along by Hannah Cowan ⭐️⭐️⭐️
A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much for indulging me in this book chatter! Books are truly like the best thing ever. I love fanfic SO MUCH obviously, but there is also something so special about like holding a physical book in your hands! I hope you are having a wonderful Monday and a great rest of your week!
❤️Ally

Rhythm, Chord & Malykhin by Mariana Zapata - blurrypetals review
originally posted sep. 17, 2018 - ★★★★☆
I'm sure it's because this is Mariana Zapata's shortest book, but this was her fluffiest, most surface-level book that I've read thus far and, while it was cute and fun, I don't like Zapata for the surface-level stuff. I like her books because they're longer, slower burns that slowly uncoil as time goes on. This has a slowish burn, too, but because it's so much shorter, it doesn't have time for anything to breathe before it's over. With this said, I did enjoy the book. Sasha and Gaby are really, really cute and their chemistry was everything. I didn't like the silly jealousy thing Gaby went through, but other than that, it was pretty fun and enjoyable. This is unfortunately the last Mariana Zapata book available on Audible Romance but it certainly won't be the last book of hers that I read. Since she's the author of one of my favorite romances ever, The Wall of Winnipeg and Me, I will forever keep coming back to her to see what she does next.

Rhythm, Chord & Malykhin by Mariana Zapata
Tumblr media
Mariana Zapata is my new go-to contemporary author when I want something light and entertaining to read. It was enjoyable, though not quite as much as TWOWAM and ARLH. This novel moved at a snail's pace, and I was almost halfway through before anything interesting happened. But the gradual build-up helped me appreciate the main characters' bond much more; in fact, the entire anticipation was well-done. This author's books were all big and bulky, but they were all great.
4.75/5 🌟

Hi! Just saw your ask about Mariana Zapata books and I was just wondering, what was your two dnf for Mariana Zapata books and why? Also have you read her latest one?
Ummm dear Aaron and lingus. Did not like the format for dear Aaron so I couldn’t get into it nor could I really feel for either characters idk. For lingus it was kinda just cringy to me, I hated the main character almost instantaneously so I couldn’t be bothered to get past the part where she feels a way about his job even though ummmmmm that’s how they fuckin met lmao tbh that one pisses me off the more I think about it ngl 😩
Oh I also read rhythm chord & malykhin, it wasn’t bad tbh but idk I thought the big twist was so stupid I was kinda like… are you serious… but like it was a p good read I just wouldn’t put it up there with the others I mentioned on that list ya know?
And no I have not read hands down or all Rhodes lead here , but I do have hands down in my library I’m just not in the mood to read these days 😩🙈

∎ PURCHASE │ │ ∎ REVIEW If anyone knows me they know what a big fan I am of Mariana Zapata. Her slow burn novellas are to die for and her ability to enthralled any reader aboard her books showcases what a phenomenal writer she is. And despite my high praise, I was not a fan of this novel. Nor the last three ("Rhythm, Chord & Malykhin", "Lingus", and "Luna and the Lie") to be honest. At all. I'm not sure if it's a reading stump or what but the high expectations I have set for her work has diminished drastically and I'm puzzled by what had happened. Let's start with the storyline shall we? There wasn't anything unique about it and was a typical generic concept I have seen time and time again in other romance novels. It didn't wow me. Secondary to that, the characters. Was there anything to rave about? No. Lenny was a tough as nails MMA gym manager who was doing everything in her power to raise her daughter Mo (cute I know) when suddenly the sperm donor Jonah pops up from the woodwork, unknowingly shocked to discover he's a d-a-d-d-y and not even the kinky kind. The mediocre romance plot that was duller than dull didn't hit me in the feels (I expected to shell at least one tear damnit) and the fact that there was nothing drawing me in made this a boring read. Seriously there was nothing which I know is an unpopular opinion but who cares and moreso it's sad to say I'm disappointed by the end result. This had great potential to be something but it was failed to be met. So in this rambling mess of a review the overall conclusion is: this is not a winner, not for me at least. Not even a little bit and I don't care about all the over hyped this got (and let me tell you it was waaay over hyped) but this wasn't Mariana Zapata best work so I'm going to bury my face in "The Wall of Winnipeg and Me" to make me feel better because I never thought I would live to see the day I would give a two star rating to a Mariana Zapata novel.

Dear Aaron by Mariana Zapata - blurrypetals review
originally posted jan. 7, 2019 - ★★★☆☆
And just like that, my well of Mariana Zapata books has run dry. This was the last book of hers that I hadn't read and I read it in one day, naturally, because I don't know how to savor books 99% of the time. If I had never read another book of Zapata's before, I would probably have enjoyed this a smidge more than I did. As far as ranking it alongside her other books, I'd probably put it between Under Locke and Rhythm, Chord & Malykhin; not as much dumb, sexy fun as Under Locke, but better written and more fleshed out than Rhythm, Chord & Malykhin. I really liked the first chunk of the book, the part that was all just emails and IM's back and forth, but all that anticipation was all paid off with a whole lot of insecurity, jealousy, and a bunch of other awkward, weird stuff, so I wasn't the biggest fan of everything past the point when Aaron was back stateside. This was a fun, breezy read, but I know Zapata is capable of so much better than this, so I was pretty disappointed. If you want to read some Zapata, start with The Wall of Winnipeg and Me, Wait For It, or From Lukov With Love instead of this.
