Willy Wonka misconceptions
As Charlie and the Chocolate Factory / Willy Wonka has become weirdly popular lately because of the successful prequel film and most recently that really botched / rip-off Wonka event in Glasgow Scotland, it felt like a good time for this post.
Here are a list of popular misconceptions about the book and films.
1. Much of the Internet thinks of Wonka as a "Serial killer of children." I pointed out that at the end of the 2006 film and novel you see the children alive, though altered. And in the 1971 film that version of Wonka says that they will all be fine, but a little wiser. Someone tried to argue with me that he was just trying to placate Charlie. Really!? Since when did that Wonka ever lie to make people feel better?
Based on his previous behavior we have no reason to believe Wonka would lie just to make Charlie feel better. It's just a dark, edgy, annoying headcanon to pretend Wonka killed those other kids when every version tells you they survived.
____________________________
2. Grandpa Joe was not "Faking it" or "being lazy." It seems ironic to me that so many rant and even get genuinely angry about the character Grandpa Joe. It is especially odd to me when the rage is in regard to the depiction in the 1971 film, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory.
The reason it is odd to me is because in the 1971 film Grandpa Joe very clearly was suffering through severe depression, possibly a long bipolar depression phase.
The depression is clear in his "I've got a golden Ticket" song.
"I never thought my life could be Anything but catastrophe"
"I never had a chance to shine Never a happy song to sing"
It seems weird to me that today people shame characters like Cinderella for not being assertive and empowered when she's a live-long abuse victim. And then you have the people against Disney's The Little Mermaid who say she gave up who and what she is for a man but ignore that she had a song number from before she ever saw Eric, where she expressed body dysphoria and made clear she wanted to be human even then.
And you have a large part of the Internet shaming Grampa Joe for being "lazy" and "faking being sick' while he's literally telling us that he he's been in a severe depression.
It's almost like watching a generation that supposedly respects mental illness and understands depression in ways previous generations didn't... suddenly having a justification to shame someone for having all the symptoms of clinical depression.
Hell, even the song "I've got a Golden Ticket" kind of indicates Grandpa Joe is entering a manic phase. If Grandpa Joe's illness is psychological why do we treat it as not-real? I get so annoyed at how many people mock the character or act like he's a con artist exploiting Charlie.

3. The Oompa Loompas were not slaves.
It's true that the earliest depictions of the Oompa Loompas were little African people (before the novel was revised) but in all versions he tells the kids that he pays them in coca-beans. That might sound like he pays them in fallen acorns he found in his garden but it's made clear that to Oompa Loompas, in their society, coca-beans are worth more than gold.
Try to imagine you got a job working for aliens who offer to pay you in large bars of gold if you just help him make some gold jewelry. But because gold isn't worth THAT much to these aliens they think you're a pathetic slave, even though Lofty (the Oompa Loompa from the new Wonka movie) probably now has a palace on Loompa Land that he uses as a summer house.
Interesting bit of trivia: Charlie was originally going to be black.
___________________________
4. Wonka (2023) is NOT a remake. A lot of people mistakenly think this is yet another remake. No. It's a musical prequel to the Gene Wilder Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie from 1971. ________________________
5. Lots of fans have "figured out" that the shoe shine boy Wonka sees early in Wonka is Charlie. One small problem with that. This is twenty-something Willy Wonka. Wonka was supposed to be pushing fifty or sixty when he went looking for an heir. The timeline wouldn't work. The director has confirmed that for this reason the shoe shine boy is NOT Charlie Bucket.
And there you go. A list of popular Wonka misconceptions debunked.

Wonka Review
Tumblr media
“Come with me, and you’ll see, a world filled with pure….” PG rated fun wrapped in a great Timothee Chalamet performance and smothered in a cartoony screenplay. Welcome to the world of Paul King’s Wonka.
Based on the iconic Roald Dahl character, Wonka follows the inventor/magician/chocolate maker, Willy Wonka (Timothee Chalamet) in his early years as he arrives at the Candy capital of the world to make the world’s greatest chocolate against the wishes of the vicious candy cartel (Matt Lucas, Paterson Joseph, and Mathew Baynton).
With a simple premise, director Paul King and co-writer Simon Farnaby crafts a scrump-dilly-umptious world that feels like the pages of a Roald Dahl book have been ripped from the spine and plastered on the silver screen.
This movie could have taken itself too seriously especially given the seriousness of Wonka’s back story but instead, the writers recognize what made Willy and The Chocolate Factory (and really, all famous Roald Dahl movie adaptations) so great and so beloved: their family friendly tone and cartoony story that feel like an Saturday morning cartoon brought to life. In this regard, Wonka succeeds with flying colors.
The movie does have a lot of heart to compliment all the goofiness thanks to the man in the chocolate-brown top hat: Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka. Chalamet gives an inspired performance worthy of his recent golden globe nomination. He makes young Willy optimistic, kind, charming, and an underdog you love to root for. He also carries the emotional backbone of this movie as Chalamet’s Wonka tells his emotional back story bit by bit culminating in an ending that will leave children and their parents in tears.
If I had to make one complaint against Chalamet in Wonka, it’s that the actor is not a very good singer and unfortunately, this movie is a musical and almost every song is done by Willy Wonka. His mediocre singing hurts the musical element of this movie significantly, luckily this film doesn’t rely too heavily on the songs and music to lift the story up. It’s able to stand without the musical numbers (which begs the question why this movie was made into a musical in the first place?). At least Chalamet gave a great musical rendition of “Pure Imagination”, I’ll give him that.
Also special shout out to Hugh Grant as Lofty The Oompa Loompa. He absolutely killed it with his voice over and motion capture performance. The CGI for the Oompa Loompa was surprisingly better than what we saw in the trailers and it really worked to bring the Oompa Loompa to life unlike previous iterations of the character. They even made Laurie’s character 8 inches tall like in Roald Dahl’s Charlie in the Chocolate Factory!
Tumblr media
Wonka is far from movie of the year but it is a visual delight as sweet and gooey as Roald Dahl’s wacky writing and as fun as a Disney Afternoon animated show. It also has enough heart to warm older and younger audiences alike. The musical element was not necessary in this film but at least Gene Wilder would be proud of this attempt to reinvent his iconic character.
7.5/10 Stars: Good

If my OCs were used in "Lego Dimensions" (Part 1/"Animaniacs")
While I previously blogged about which properties I'd like to see in "Lego Dimensions", I wanted to take this opportunity to discuss my OCs from some of those franchises I previously mentioned in terms of how I would see Year 3 if "Lego Dimensions" didn't discontinue.
WIZARD WALDO
LAYOUT
For Wizard Waldo, I pictured that he would come in either a fun pack or a team pack (if you wanted to pair him with Background Singer, whom I will get to later.). Either way, Waldo would be one of those playable villains similar to The Wicked Witch of the West ("The Wizard of Oz") and Lord Voldemort ("Harry Potter"). Waldo could also have a flying monkey build similar to the Wicked Witch's, but with the fur being brown and having golden chest plates as part of Waldo's pets' armor.
ABILITIES
Flight
Dive
Target
Illumination (With his scepter)
Intelligence
Super Strength
Magic
Silver LEGO Blowup
Laser
Melt Ice
Electricity
Water Spray
Growth
Hazard Cleaner
Underwater Hazard Cleaner
Fix-It
Mind Control (From his scepter)
Magical Shield
Cursed Red LEGO Objects
Parseltongue Doors
Apparate Access
(This is all I can think of for what abilities Waldo would have)
CHARACTER/VEHICLE INTERACTIONS
Wizard Waldo with Yakko Warner
Yakko (Scared): Oh no, Waldo!
Wizard Waldo: Don't be alarmed, Yakko. I'm not gonna hurt you. Not yet, anyway.
Wizard Waldo with Wakko Warner
Wakko: I'm still not afraid of you, Waldo!
Wizard Waldo: Well, I'm afraid I don't really have a choice but to join you.
Wakko: So, you'll spare me?
Wizard Waldo: Don't push it.
Wizard Waldo with Dot Warner
Dot: Why are you here, Waldo? Aren't you gonna kidnap me?
Wizard Waldo: Not this time. I came here to form a truce.
Wizard Waldo with Background Singer
Wizard Waldo (Outraged): I can't believe this! Me working with my sworn nemesis?
Background Singer: Touché, I was just about to say the same thing about you.
(This is all I can think of for what Waldo's interactions would be)
Wizard Waldo with The Wicked Witch of the West
Wicked Witch: You lost something of yours too? Don't go copying my style, pal! On second thought, we do have a lot in common.
Wizard Waldo with Unikitty
Unikitty: If you spent more time singing, you wouldn't feel so "Wicked", witch.
Wizard Waldo (Mad): IT'S A ROBE! HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS!?
BACKGROUND SINGER
LAYOUT
For my heroic "Animaniacs" OC, I wanted Background Singer to be more grounded since he doesn't want to reveal that he's a wizard to his friends. He could come in a team pack paired either with Dot Warner or Wizard Waldo, or just give him a separate fun pack. His vehicle build would be his motorcycle, which has a sidecar built-in for an additional player to ride in.
ABILITIES
Acrobat (Like Ethan Hunt and Wyldstyle, Background Singer can double jump.)
Dive
Glide (With his microphone umbrella opened)
Grapple (With his microphone grapple gun)
Rope Swings (With his microphone grapple gun)
Target (With his microphone gun)
Super Jump
Uniform Changing (Becomes rageful and rips his suit off to reveal his muscular build)
Super Strength (When his abs are revealed)
Super Strength Handles (When his abs are revealed)
CHARACTER/VEHICLE INTERACTIONS
Background Singer with Yakko Warner
Yakko: Singer! I'm so glad you came along for the ride.
Background Singer with Wakko Warner
Background Singer: So, you up for another adventure, Wakko?
Background Singer with Dot Warner
Dot: Thanks for coming with me, Singer.
Background Singer: Anything for the love of my life.
Background Singer with Aang
Background Singer (Excited): No way! You're the Avatar? I have so much to ask you.
Background Singer with Willy Wonka
(NOTE: This line is more of what Background Singer would say to the Johnny Depp Willy Wonka as opposed to the Gene Wilder version.)
Background Singer: You wanna know about my dark past?
Background Singer with Unikitty
Unikitty: Oh, you like to sing? So do I! We should sing a duet someday.
Background Singer: You know, remind me of Dot. Have you seen her?
Background Singer with Emmet
Background Singer: ♪Everything is awesome. Everything is cool, when you're Background Singer.♪
Background Singer with Master Splinter
Splinter: Anger is self-destructive. Ninniku Seishin is the ability to endure insults with patience and humility. You cannot be a true ninja until you master it.
Background Singer: I'm not a ninja, but thanks.
Background Singer with Lord Voldemort
Background Singer: Looking a bit pale, Waldo? Sorry, wrong wizard.
(This is all I can think of for what Background Singer's interactions would be)
