Some of My TMNT Hot Takes (PART 2) 🔥
Warning: More Opinions
Part 1 Here
I don’t like that in Mutant Mayhem Donnie is not a “science guy” but instead is more of an anime and pop culture geek. I’m not against him being an anime fan (I love anime too) but I wish we saw more of his science and being a tech genius side instead of him just liking stereotypical “nerdy stuff”. If that makes sense.
I don’t like the Punk Frogs (any version).
The 87 crossover episodes in the 2012 series (as much as I did enjoy them & are great episodes) should not have happened. They leave no real impact or development to 2012’s overarching story and just waste time. These episodes could’ve covered more important things that 202 was desperately lacking like like character exploration and character dynamic development. It was just nostalgic fanservice. The arc in S5 specifically would’ve work better as a movie instead of a 3-4 episode arc in the (most likely non canon) final season.
Shinigami being Mikey’s second love interests ruins her character a bit (for me personally). That was a pointless decision that did NOT need to happen. She would’ve been our first recurring female character to not be a love interest, but nope!
People are allowed to like/ship Donnie x April in ROTTMNT (this is coming from someone who’s not crazy about April being shipped with the Turtles).
I ship Yuichi with 2012 Leo more than Rise Leo (still ship Rise Leoichi, but I just think 2012 Leoichi is way more interesting, plus 2012 Leo deserves a good love interest).
The humans in Mutant Mayhem look ugly af (I know that was probably an intentional design choice but still. It looks bad.)
I hate Raph x Casey (any ver). I’ve stated in part one that I don’t like Raph (any version) being in a romantic relationship with human characters and yes, that meant him with Casey. Not only that but Raph and Casey being a couple ruins their whole dynamic and iconic friendship I love so much. I’m all for friends to lovers but they are a line that should not be crossed. Not every friendship needs to turn romantic.
2012 Karai’s hair looks bad.
Fans often over exaggerate Rise Donnie’s character and badly mischaracterize him in fanfics and fan comics to the point it makes him feel like he’s an entirely different character.
Shinigami should have been revealed to be a villain.
Rise Donnie was just as mean to his brother as fans claim 2012 Raph was to his. Yes, they both do love their families and I’m NOT saying either of them are abus!ce (they’re not), but fans praising Rise Donnie for doing similar things fans criticize/hate 2012 Raph for doing just makes them hypocrites.
Venus does NOT need to be in every iteration of TMNT. It gets kind of annoying when fans keep on saying that she should be in all the other iterations when in truth her presence would not make sense based on the already established canon story. The only (recent) version of TMNT where I think her being included would’ve fit the best and deserved to make her comeback in is ROTTMNT.
The side plot of 2012 Karai being mutated and later getting brainwashed by Shredder was a waste of time and the most boring arc in the series.
2012 April, Donnie and Casey being in a poly relationship does not fix anything with their problematic dynamic and massive flaws with one another. I'm not saying you can't ship all three of them together, you do you! Idc But in reality their relationship would be a train wreck, that's why I personally don't ship 2012 Capriltello.
Renet is probably one of the most powerful allies the Turtles have in the 2012 series.
Rise Donnie would NOT hate 2012 April. He’d go crazy over her psychic powers and want to study them to help her explore them more.
From what I've seen so far, Leo x Usagi seems like the only GOOD ship in the 2003 series (this hot take might change tho).
Raph had the best character arc and development in the 2012 series and changed the most out of the four brothers. Next would be Leo. With Mikey and Donnie have little development (or none at all sadly).

Scattered Remains (TMNT 2012 and Rise! Crossover)

Warnings: Spoilers for TMNT 2012 Season 4, Episode 22
A/N: I’m finally done with the first chapter! If this does well, I might create a comic based off of it on my art account!

“Red, is that really you?” Casey asks, as he cautiously approaches April.
“I think so. But Donnie,” she says with teary eyes, “What have I done.”
The group stands still for a moment before Leonardo breaks the tense silence.
“It’s not your fault April. You had no control,” he says.
“But it is!” she gasps, looking up at him through her tears, “It was all me in a way. If only-”
She pauses for a moment, focusing on the broken crystal shards.
“Donnie’s not gone! He wasn’t really destroyed, just molecularly scattered,” she says as she faces the turtles and Casey, “I can bring him back.”
The boys watch in anticipation as April’s powers hone in on Donnie’s energy. If she can bring him back, she can make her family whole again.
She has to bring him back.
The turtles and Casey watch as blue sparks fly through the air, forming the silhouette of a body.
The turtles watch, full of anticipation. Their brother wasn’t gone. He was coming back!
Their excitement quickly turns to horror as they realize the figure in front of them is not Donatello.
Though not their missing brother, April still managed to bring another mutant turtle to the place where Donnie had been vaporized minutes before.
This turtle seemed younger, maybe by a year or so.
Raphael breaks the stunned silence as he holds a sai against the neck of the unfamiliar turtle.
“Who the hell are you? And where’s my brother?”
“Woah, Raph! Chill out dude!” says Michelangelo, pushing his brother out of the way, “He’s just a kid. And he’s scared.”
Michelangelo was right. The mystery turtle was still pale and shaking even as Raphael released him from the ground.
“It's ok mystery dude! We’re not gonna hurt you…anymore,” says Michelangelo, glaring pointedly at his hotheaded brother.
Raph rolls his eyes in annoyance.
“What are you doing Mikey? This is some random mutant that April brought here with her freaky crystal powers. We have no idea what it’s capable of.”
“Mikey’s right,” says Leo after a long stretch of silence, “This turtle is just a lost kid. He was brought here with April’s powers, which means he’s our responsibility. We have to take him back to the lair.”
“Are you crazy Leo? We have to focus on finding Donnie. Our brother is lost somewhere and you're focused on a random mutant we found on the street!”
Before another argument could break out, the mystery turtle interjected.
“Your brother’s name is Donatello?”
The group of teenagers looked over in shock. Michelangelo was the first one to respond.
“Yeah, dude. He disappeared when April got possessed by a freaky alien crystal.”
“The same crystal that brought you here,” says April in shock, “I was trying to find Donnie, but it brought you instead.”
“So that means…you’re Donnie?” asks Casey.
“Yes,” says the other turtle, “Just not your Donnie..”
“We have to get back to the lair and talk to Master Splinter. We’ll come up with a plan to find our Donnie and get this Donnie back home.”
“Seriously Leo?” Says Raph, “You’re gonna believe him just like that? Even if he is a Donnie he’s not our brother. We can’t just take him to the lair.”
“Think about it Raph,” says Casey, “If April accidentally brought the other Donnie here, our Donnie is probably stuck wherever he came from. Trustingthe other Donnie is our best bet.”
Raph huffs, but doesn’t argue any further.
“That’s it then. We’re headed back to the lair,” said Leo, “April, you should probably come with us. Maybe you can help Donnie replicate the research that you and Donnie did on the crystal.”
April and other Donnie both nod in agreement.
“I might be able to use other me’s research to try to replicate a similar
kind of technology that could get me home,” said the alternate Donnie, “If all goes well we should be able to find your brother too.”
The group looks to Raphael, gauging his reaction.
“Fine,” he said after a beat of silence, “But that doesn’t mean we trust you. All we need you for is to get Donnie back.”
The group sits in tense silence as Raphael stalks off towards the Shellraiser.
“Don’t worry about Raph little dude!” says Michelangelo with a small smile,
“He’s just worried about Donnie. He’ll come around.
“Mikey’s right. It’s nothing personal…probably,” says Leo before looking over to the Shellraiser, “We need to get back to the lair and tell Master Splinter what happened.”
“It’s late, I should probably get home,” Casey finally speaks up, “Let me know if you come up with any ideas on finding Donnie.”
The group watches as his figure retreats into the night before following
Leo into the Shellraiser.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Nina Pokemon (and why I think these turtlemon match them + terra types)
Tumblr media
Raph and Drednaw: Snaping Turtle. Ig it's shiny is also red-ish | Terra type: Fighting
Mikey and Turtwig: just a little guy. One of the two non aquatic turtle Pokemon, just like Mikey, who is the only non aquatic turtle species between his brothers | Terra type: Fire
Leo and Warturtle: blue turtle. Idk I just think Warturtle is neat. He would have loved Ash’s Squirtle you can't convince me otherwise | Terra type: Psychic
Donnie and Carracosta: Some of you might think “oh but Orbis this doesn't make any sense Donnie is a tech guy so why would he have a fossil pokemon” well the only reason why this Pokemon is alive again IS SCIENCE. Also it just looks more armoured then the other turtlemon | Terraa type: Steel
Thx for coming to my ted talk

Reading Guidelines and Warnings: The 2012 boys will be addressed by their full names unless they're referring to each other or talking to one another. The Rise boys will be addressed by their nicknames and other variations of said names. Also this fic contains spoilers for both shows as well as language, straining/mentioning injuries and fights. If any of this makes you uncomfortable I highly recommend that y'all check out my other works.
A terse silence had come over the group of teenagers as they'd listened to Donatello and Donnie explain their findings, each word making them be filled with a sense of dread at what it all meant. April sat beside Leonardo, biting her bottom lip as she listened, not liking what was being said at all.
"In conclusion we think that the Kraang might have something to do with bringing the alternate us to our universe. However whether it was international or not is unclear, but I do know that something's going on. These power surges that have been rising up from time to time for the past two or three weeks. The biggest surge was only a few days before Donnie and his brothers appeared within the lair."
Donatello said having explained the more complex aspects of his and his younger doppelganger's findings. April glanced at Leonardo seeing the serious gaze in his eyes as he processed and thought about what they were all going to do next. The psychic teen watched her friend as he thought of each possible course of action carefully, strategizing for potential missions should they go through with this. After a moment of silence the blue clad leader finally spoke his dark blue gaze zoned in on his little brother and his counterpart.
"So that means in order to get the answers to what's going on and to whether or not that the Kraang are involved with all of this we're going to have to seek them out and do recon."
The older turtle said his voice strong and sharp as he waited for Donatello and Donnie's response.
"More or less that's what Don here said. I don't know much about this Kraang but from what my ingenious companion here explained they're not the easiest bunch to find and they're highly dangerous if they're given the chance to enact on their plans."
Donnie stated blunt and to the point as he met Leonardo's gaze dead on. Donatello quickly chimed in.
"I'm thinking that we'll most likely need to locate and break into the Kraang facility and see exactly what's going on."
Donatello said earning a nod from the leader of their clan.
"If the Kraang have something to do with this and are planning something big it's our duty to find them and put a stop to it before they can cause some major damage to the city as well as possible other realities if they are responsible for our counterparts being here."
The blue clad turtle said already coming to the decision of checking it out.
"Also we gotta find a way to get the little bros back home!"
Michelangelo chimed in looking determined to help the younger turtles get back to their own world.
"So what's the plan Fearless? Do we go busting heads once we find these alien creeps?"
Raphael spoke up an already sharp gleam in his gaze. April couldn't help but mentally sigh in exasperated fondness at the red clad turtle's obvious excitement at the prospect of fighting their enemies. Raphael was always up for sparring and fighting.
"We'll go and check it out and see what we can find. But first we'll need to locate their base and see what possible threats it may have before we go busting in some heads. If we can avoid it I'd rather we not fight unless it's absolutely necessary."
Leonardo said his tone full of authority as he gazed at his brothers and April, a silent message being given to them. The four teens received it earning nods of agreement however Raphael's a little bit more hesitant than the others.
"So what should we do?"
Mikey's voice suddenly chimed in making the five older teens turn their attention towards their younger guests. The three other turtles looked a bit lost on what they were supposed to do during all of this, since it seemed like everyone else including their own brother Donnie already knew their roles in going through with this.
"If you don't mind I'd like for you four to start training with us in the dojo. That way we all can get used to each other's fighting styles and being able to work together better. The last thing I want is for us to be unprepared for this upcoming mission."
Leonardo answered him. April felt the blue clad turtle's aura shift a bit in unease and nervousness. Steel blue hues looked back up at her friend a look a slight confusion and concern coming up in her gaze and she knew that Leonardo had noticed her staring at him however he didn't respond to her confused look, instead continuing to be the leader that he'd always been since he was fifteen years old. April's gaze was torn away from him when Leo's voice spoke up.
"We can do that. It'll be better than sitting here and doing nothing."
Leo said his voice smooth and relaxed completely at ease despite the situation. However the slight twitch of his hand gave him away about just how unnerved he actually was. April felt the slider's aura shift and change, fluttery and constantly moving like a bird trapped in a bird cage. It made her older sister instincts go off a bit feeling that undercurrent of distress.
"Then it's settled, starting tomorrow morning we'll begin meeting within the dojo to train and learn from one another. Donnie?"
Leonardo asked turning his attention back to the purple genius who quickly responded to his unasked question.
"Already ahead of you Leo, me and my genius friend here have already started to do a search for the Kraang base and have things set up to catch anymore of these energy surges. We'll know immediately if something happens."
Donatello said already one step ahead of the game.
"We'll let you all know as soon as we've got something."
Donnie piped in already turning his attention to his wrist tech to start typing away and inputting the program that Donatello and him had started to work on. Leonardo nodded, satisfied with the results and spoke up.
"Then it's settled, for now we should rest up for the day and prepare for the dojo training tomorrow."
The blue clad leader said earning nods of varying degrees of agreement from the others. Taking that as a que April quickly sprung into action giving Leonardo a sweet smile as she gripped his forearm rather tightly.
"Why don't I go make you some tea Leo. I wanted to catch up with you anyway."
April said her voice sweet and as smooth as honey. However Leonardo seemed to hold back a flinch as he looked into her eyes and saw the irritation from earlier come back full force.
"Say April do you mind if I join you in that tea? I'd just love to catch up with you as well."
Donatello's voice suddenly much closer than it was before spoke up as a sudden grip on Leonardo's shoulder nearly made the turtle about jump out of his shell. April turned her gaze onto Donatello and quickly saw his own irritation within his reddish brown gaze despite the sweet gap toothed smile he was wearing.
"Of course Dee, I'd be honored to have you join us for tea. Come on Leo."
The red head said her voice still sickeningly sweet but the aura she and Donatello had told Leonardo that no wasn't a choice. The blue turtle closed his eyes for a moment taking a deep breath to mentally prepare himself for what was about to come. Then with a calm passive smile he got up from his seat already knowing that April and Donatello were following right behind him.
"Gladly."
The leader said knowing that he wasn't going to get out of this. As the two teens led Leonardo out of the pit and towards the lab April could hear Michelangelo's voice say.
"Oooooo someone's in trouble with Mom and Dad."
The orange turtle whispered amused by the scene. A snort of laughter and a smirk on Raphael's face was caught out of the corner of her eye as he responded back to his little brother.
"Too bad they got to him before we did. There's always next time though."
The red turtle said looking all the world like a cat who caught the carny. April paid no mind to them even when she felt the confused looks from the younger turtles on her back as she pulled Leonardo away from the group. Donatello followed behind them before parting ways to go into the kitchen to grab something before he came to join the duo. April took over from there her grip still tight on Leonardo's forearm as she all but dragged him into the lab where she could finally do what she'd been wanting to do since before the meeting. Pushing the doors open and practically shoving him inside the lab April turned to shut the doors behind her. As soon as they were closed the once sweet smile immediately fell away into a look of elder sister irritation and annoyance as she whirled around on Leonardo her steely blue gaze hard.
"Sit. Now."
She said her voice hard and leaving no room for him to argue. Leonardo did as he was told, knowing that an angry April wasn't an April you wanted to mess with. Once Leonardo was sitting down April began to pace the lab, angrily grabbing things that would be needed to make Leonardo's tea. Opening up the special cabinet that Donatello had in his lab she grabbed the old tea kettle that the purple genius kept for his older brother whenever he'd join in within said lab and filled it within the sink with water. Nearly slamming the tea kettle onto the counter she placed it on the burner that sat on Donatello's counter careful not to break his things in her anger. Leonardo flinched at the sound of the tea kettle already knowing that this lecture was going to be a big one. As April turned on the burner to warm up the water the sounds of the lab doors opening and closing along with that familiar nervous yet kind aura that belonged to Donatello filled the room letting her know that he had come to join them.
Glancing up from her task she saw the look of pure irritation on his tall friend's face, a small teabag tin with a hand written note taped to its side in his grasp as he placed it onto the counter next to her. The two didn't say a word the entire time, stewing instead in their emotions. Leonardo who was sitting in one of the lab chairs sat quietly bouncing his leg slightly to keep the access energy at bay. Once the kettle was going the two finally turned their narrowed eyed gazes onto the leader in blue, heated steel blue and reddish brown gazes boring into passive dark blue. It was only a beat of silence before April was the one who broke it.
"Just what in the HELL WERE YOU THINKING?????"
The red head finally snapped her tone raising a bit in her concerned anger.
"Well-"
The blue turtle began only to be cut off.
"Pulling a stunt like that!! When your voice is already strained enough!!"
The psychic snarled not happy at all. Leonardo narrowed his eyes in slight frustration.
"What was I supposed to do? I can't just stop raising my voice at times all because of my throat, the meeting needed to be started and there was just too much noise going on to be heard."
Leonardo said his voice cracking halfway through as he tried to defend himself however at that moment Donatello joined in the scolding lecture.
"You could have gotten me to quiet everyone down! Or hell you could have let April do it! You know damn well that putting that much strain on your vocal chords isn't good, and yet you still do it anyway!"
Donatello snapped his voice sharp and upset at his older brother's earlier stunt. Leonardo at this point just hardened his gaze at the two not liking how they weren't seeming to trust him enough to know his own body and how it works.
"I understand that more than you think and I'd made the decision to raise my voice anyway. It's my decision whether or not I take certain risks and I know my limitations when it comes to my vocal chords. I don't need to be told what I can and cannot do."
The blue clad turtle said stressing his sentence to let them know that he knew what he was doing. However April and Donatello wouldn't hear it.
"Leo while it may be your decision to go through with these things it's still a decision that will affect the ones around you! You think we like seeing you struggle to even talk or raise your voice??? We want you to be able to still communicate with us and if you keep doing these things you're gonna end up losing your voice completely and we can't handle it-!"
April said the concern and worry she'd felt beneath her irritation breaking through her voice. Leonardo went quiet as he caught her tone, his once hardened gaze softening slightly.
"Look Leo, I know that you don't.....that you don't like to acknowledge these things. I know that you're fully capable of handling yourself and knowing your own limits. But in the end it doesn't matter because even though we know these things on a logical level, we still can't help but want to make things a bit more easier for you in the long run. Me and April, Raph and Mikey we're not trying to make you feel like you can't take care of yourself. We just want to help you because we love you, and seeing you doing things that could hurt you ends up hurting us too."
Donatello said his voice once stern and hard was now softening slightly in hopes of making his older brother understand exactly why him and April were scolding him for what he'd done. The once hardened gaze had now completely disappeared and was replaced with guilt for causing unnecessary worry to his loved ones. April felt her own irritation die down as she saw the guilt filled expression and she reached out towards him and gripped his hand gently.
"I'm sorry for yelling at you. I was just worried about you and I let myself lose my cool for a moment. I know that you're capable and that you know what you can and can't do. You're my brother Leo and I can't help but worry when you do stuff like that."
The red head said her tone now more gentle than it was before. Donatello stepped up next to her and gave Leonardo's other hand a gentle squeeze.
"She's right. We're just worried about you, you're our brother and we just want you to be safe and comfortable. Not push yourself because you feel like you have to. You maybe our leader and the head of the Hamato clan but you're still our brother and we don't want you to suffer, just like you don't want us to."
The purple genius said his tone sincere. And it was true, they both just wanted Leonardo to be take it easy and to not push himself too much. It wasn't because they didn't believe that he could do it, but rather it was because they knew that he could and could surpass it even if he put his mind to it that they worried about him. April felt Leonardo squeeze her hand back the tension between the three of them finally dying down. The blue clad turtle looked up at the red head and the tall purple clad turtle and before the two realized it they were being dragged into a hug, Leonardo's arms wrapped tightly around them.
"I'm sorry that I worried you all. I shouldn't have pulled a stunt like that. I'll try to keep it toned down, but I can't make any guarantees of it."
The leader said knowing that he couldn't exactly promise to not push his vocal chords again but to at least try not to was something he could do. The two teenagers relaxed and hugged Leonardo back, the stress of the situation finally dispersed. The trio were pulled out of their embrace however when the sound of the tea kettle going off startled them apart. April was the first one up, already going to get her friend his cup of tea. Donatello remained by his older brother's side quietly talking to him as their red haired companion got the tea.
"If you don't mind I'd like to at least take a look at your throat and see if you might have done some unknown damage to it. You did raise your voice volume pretty high and that crackle it gave off didn't sound too good."
Donatello said as he went into medic mode already getting ready to do some tests while he had Leonardo in his lab. April heard the older turtle sigh softly before responding.
"I can do that, besides I kinda owe you for the unintentional worry I caused. So exam as much as you like Don."
Leonardo said his voice now back to its original volume cracked somewhat. April flinched a bit at the sound, thinking about how the raised volume in his earlier stunt combined with the talking during the meeting had probably ruined his throat somewhat. Gripping the cup of tea April brought it over and passed it to Leonardo who gratefully took it and took a sip, the medical herbs and other soothing properties of it helping his throat that was now currently aching.
"Thanks April."
The oldest Hamato said his voice soft and raspy making April's heart twist.
"Anytime Leo."
The red head replied easily. She would have said more however Donatello had taken over having gone to grab his kit to do the examination of his older brother's throat. April stepped back as she watched the two brothers for a moment, listening to Donatello's voice begin to ramble as he began his checkup on the older teen.
"I'll have to make you more teabags I'd noticed that you were running low, you should have said something. And while you're here has your knee been acting up lately.....?"
Donatello said professional and mother henning somewhat as he checked Leonardo over. April took that as her que to leave the two be, knowing how the blue clad turtle could be whenever too many people were in the same room while he was being checked over. Making her way towards the doors she took one last look at the two brothers, watching Donatello gently and confidently look over Leonardo while the blue clad turtle let him content to just let the purple clad genius go.
'They'll be okay.'
The thought whispered reassuring her and with one final look she'd stepped out of the lab, leaving the two brothers alone.
~~~~~
Donnie sat on the couch with his brothers and Raphael and Michelangelo watching as Donatello and April had dragged Leonardo to the lab. It wasn't long after that a feminine shout full of irration and muffled echoed into the living room.
"Just what in the HELL WERE YOU THINKING?????"
Donnie and the others in the living room flinched at the harsh shout that came from lab, surprised by how strong it was.
'Note to self don't get on her bad side.'
The genius mentally noted. On the one side of the couch Raphael and Michelangelo were sitting and listening looking torn between being a bit smug and feeling sorry for their older brother. The two warm colored turtles knew all too well how scary it could be to be on the receiving end of not only April's scoldings but Donatello's as well.
"God rest his soul."
Michelangelo said sounding grave.
"He shall be forever known as the fool who embarked April and Donatello's wrath."
Raphael chimed in shaking his head in mock sympathy. Donnie and his brothers shared a look amongst themselves seemingly debating whether or not they should comment on the two older turtles quips or if they should just stay out of it.
'I'm not touching this. So don't even look at me.'
Dark brown eyes said already letting the other three pairs know that he wouldn't do it.
'I'm with Dee on this one. Usually I'm all for getting into the tea but I'm gonna pass on this one.'
Light blue hues chimed in obviously a bit spooked by the surprisingly scary April O'Neil.
'Yeah no I don't think even Dr. Feelings or Dr. Delicate Touch is gonna mess with this one.'
Light brown ones said obviously not wanting to step on that land mine. Three pairs of eyes seemed to drift towards the last pair waiting for a response. They were met with the familiar stank of a nervous sweating.
'Raph is willing to do a lot of things. But not this, dealing with our April when she's upset is nerve wracking enough. Raph can't do another one.'
Dark green hues said refusing to even entertain the thought. In silent agreement the four brothers decided that it was probably best to just live it be. The six turtles sat on the couches quietly in the living room pit area for quite sometime when the sounds of the lab doors opening and then closing sounded out throughout the lair. Six pairs of eyes snapped towards the direction of the lab doors to see who it was that had stepped out. April seemed to pause feeling their gazes on her, the short red head looking a bit uneasy at all the attention. A pregnant silence filled the air between them before Raphael spoke up and broke it.
"Everything cleared up?"
Raphael asked his tone blunt and giving nothing away to what exactly was being cleared up. April seemed to relax and she gave him a small smile this one more sincere than the one from earlier.
"Yep everything's cleared. Me and Dee took care of it."
The psychic said earning a grunt in response from the red clad turtle. Now seemingly satisfied Raphael suddenly stood up from the couch cracking his neck slightly and stretching.
"Cool, now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go to the dojo and hit some dummies. All this sitting around twiddling my thumbs has gotten me all twitchy."
Raphael stated not even bothering to wait for a response before he'd disappeared from the living room already making his way to the dojo. Michelangelo shortly after followed suit, a bright smile on his freckled face.
"Thanks for handling things Ape. You're the bomb! I'm gonna go finish making lunch since I couldn't get to it before the meeting."
Michelangelo chirped already somewhat skipping into the kitchen. It didn't take much after that to make the younger turtles go into gear.
"Ya know Raph's feeling like doing some sparring too I'll go join Shorty in the dojo and see if he wants to sparr with me."
Raph said practically flying from his place on the couch to try and calm down the nerves he'd gotten from earlier. Mikey was quick to follow bouncing up from the couch as well and jogging towards the kitchen.
"I promised Mike I'd help make lunch! So I'm gonna go do that!"
Mikey said already gone before the remaining teenagers could even open their mouths to say anything. All that was left was Donnie, his older twin Leo and April. The three looked at each other quiet for a moment before April broke the silence.
"If you guys don't mind I'll just join you on the couch."
The red head said sounding a bit hesitant to do so. Leo quickly went to reassure the older teen.
"Hey no, no we don't mind. Me and Donald here were just planning on hanging out on the couch anyway right Dee?"
Leo said ribbing his younger twin in the side. Donnie gave him an unamused look not enjoying the random touches.
"Not much else I can do since the lab is currently being used by Don and other you. So I'm somewhat stuck here with you."
The soft shell said his tone blunt and somewhat uninterested. The red eared slider gave a mock offended gasp at his twin as April had came down to join them placing herself on the other side of Donnie.
"How cold of you! Acting like you don't enjoy my company! I'm offended, how could you betray me like this??"
The slider said dramatically a hand on his chest to add to the effect. His twin just scoffed quirking an eyebrow at him.
"I'm sorry that the truth is too cold for you Leon, but I don't make a habit to lie about these things."
The purple genius replied playing right along with his twin. The blue jokester instantly made a few noises of protest and mock offensive. The twins were interrupted by April's amused chuckles at their shenanigans. The two brothers turned their attention to the alternate version of their adopted sister, seeing her steel blue eyes sparkling with amusement.
"You two really are something else huh?"
She asked curious and amused. Leo came out of his stupor and shot her a small smirk.
"We're a whole different breed. Me and Don here are on a whole different level."
Leo said smirking confidently while Donnie just rolled his eyes at his twins antics.
"Hehe it would seem so. You two are vastly different from my Leo and Donnie."
The red head said having already noticed the major differences between the boys she knew and the ones currently in front of her. Donnie turned his attention to her his dark brown hues curious and somewhat withdrawn.
"We could say the same about you. You're vastly different from our April back in our world."
The soft shell said feeling a pang at the mention of his April back home. The older April went quiet somewhat noticing the sudden change in Donnie and the small shift of Leo's attitude. The two had seemed to grow dim at the thought of their April and the red head could feel the way their auras brightness seemed to go a bit duller than they once were. Her heart went out to the two younger turtles, compassion and understanding filling her heart.
"Can you tell me about her?"
April asked tucking her legs underneath her to get more comfortable on the couch. The two teens seemed to brighten up somewhat and quickly began to tell her about her alternate self.
"Oh man were to even begin......well for one thing she looks extremely different from you. She's got dark brown eyes and she wears glasses, she's got darker skin and dark brown hair that she puts up in these kickass space buns."
Leo began to say describing their beloved friend back home. Donnie was quick to chime in to the conversation, wanting to talk about her as well.
"She's also fearless and a fighter. She's incredibly smart and hard working, she's funny and fiercely passionate about things that she enjoys. She's......"
Donnie said trailing off and Leo took over.
"Incredible. She's our best friend and she's practically our sister if we're being honest."
Leo said finishing up for Donnie. The two suddenly went quiet as they thought about her, a sudden sadness filling their hearts as they realized that back home they'd disappeared without a trace. Disappeared without being able to let April or their own father know where they were or that they were safe from harm. About how worried sick she must be at the moment. Donnie felt his throat tighten a bit as he thought of his best friend and how she had no clue about what had happened to them.
'Will we even see her again? Will we even be able to get back home to her and papa? What if we can't get home? What....what if we never get to see her ever again??'
The questions and sudden fears hit the soft shell hard as he tried to imagine never seeing April or his father ever again. As he tried to imagine never hearing April's laughter or her sarcastic comments or her jokes. Donnie swallowed harshly and about jumped out of his skin when he felt Leo grip his battle shell in a comforting manner obviously noticing that he'd became distressed. However nothing took him more by surprise than what the red head next to him said.
"I know that it's scary being in a place where you can't see your loved ones. It's hard when you all you want to do is to get back home to them and to see them again. It's.....it's the most awful feeling in the world."
April said her voice soft and gentle as the two turtles turned their gazes onto her in shock.
"How......how did you know.....?"
Leo asked trying to keep his surprise out of his tone. Donnie meanwhile just stared at the older girl in naked surprise at having what they were currently feeling be hit right on the dot.
"I know the feeling because I experienced it. A few years back, back when I was sixteen I'd been kidnapped by the Kraang alongside my father. My father he's a scientist and they wanted to use his research to help bring their dreams of mutating New York to life. During this kidnapping I'd met Donnie and the others. They helped me escape but.....but we were forced to leave him behind. I went into hiding with them and Master Splinter, and that entire time all I could do was worry about him and miss him more than anything in the world. It was one of the most scariest moments in my life."
April explained a far away look in her gaze as she spoke.
"But you know something? In the end I'd ended up getting my father back safe and sound. The boys they'd helped me get him back, they'd kept their promise to me that I'd be able to see him again."
The red head said a small smile coming onto her pale freckled cheeks as she turned her gaze to the two younger turtles their own gazes wide and vulnerable as they were greeted by a reassuring warmth.
"I know that things are bad right now. But I also know that you all will see your loved ones again. If my boys are on the job then I know without a doubt in my mind that you'll both, along with your brothers will return home safely. And if you're anything like my boys and your April is anything like me, you'll definitely make it happen and your April will be right there waiting for you, because she knows that she can depend on you to come back. You just gotta keep holding on."
April said her tone strong and full of warmth and confidence in what she was saying. Seeing the red head looking so sure of herself, seeing her warm and kind smile full of confidence and faith in them as well as in her own turtles, made Leo and Donnie's spirits rise, the sorrow that was there no longer weighing them down. Donnie stared at this alternate version of his April, and in that moment he saw the very reason why she was an April as well. Just like his April back home this older and vastly different April was filled with the same burning passion and fearlessness and unshakable faith that their own beloved friend carried with her. The two turtles sat there for a moment quietly before Donnie surprisingly was the one to speak up first.
"Thank you April......we......we really needed to hear that."
The soft shell said his tone soft while the slider next to him nodded in agreement his own gratitude on his face.
"Dee's right we.....we really needed that so seriously.....thank you."
Leo said his voice suspiciously thick sounding. No one commented on it however instead opting to let him keep his dignity and pride. April gave the two boys another sincere smile her gaze warm and reassuring.
"It's no problem, I'm glad I could help you both out."
She said sweetly before the three of them fell into a comfortable silence, only speaking occasionally about mundane things and topics. Leo and Donnie knew that it wouldn't be easy to get back home but they knew that no matter what happens they'd do everything within their power to make it happen.
After all they had an April who was waiting for them and who always would wait for them no matter where or when.
*I'm on a roll today my bitches holy shit. Anyways I hope that this chapter is good for y'all because chapter eight is gonna take me some time and it'll probably be a bit before it comes out because I've got some big plans to help push the plot along. I was gonna hold off on this chapter but April wouldn't get out of my head and this plot was driving me nuts so I ended up writing it woooo. Also I apologize in advance for the short chapter it'll be better in the next one (hopefully maybe if the gods of creativity spare my self indulgent ass lol). Anyways if any y'all read this I hope you enjoyed it!!!*
Three cheers to publishing on time. Can I get a what what? Anyways, here’s the next chapter. The previous chapter is at the bottom of this chapter. Go figure.
Chapter 3
“Okay, I think I got it.” It is possible you are going stir crazy. You would not be surprised if you were, but you have more pressing matters that, ridiculously, involve the timeline of fucking Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012. You had not just stood the headassery of season four and five, but conquered it, tamed it, if you will. You do not remember the last time you ate. “So the only way I’m going to survive this series is if I somehow, through some sort of spiritual bullshit, get to become at least somewhat adept at ninjitsu.” You sigh. “But the only reason he trained her is because of her psychic bullshit.”
You stumble towards the kitchen to eat for the first time in days. “Actually, you know what? Fuck that.” You open the refrigerator, salivating at the food. “I’m just gonna buy a fucking gun. Dodge bullets, bitch.” You pull out a large slab of meat, tossing it on the counter. “If they aren’t going to actually incapacitate people, I will.”
A sudden thought stops you in your tracks. “Wait, so, what timeline am I on?” You feel your heart drop. “Because if we’re doing the whole thing…” You shake your head. “You know what? Prepare for the best and accept—that’s backwards.”
You put the meat back. Something about the existential dread kills your appetite. You crawl back into bed, close your eyes. ‘How long have I been in here?’ The time had admittedly swirled in on itself, your brain completely fried from all the contemplating death. ‘At least long enough to be in the no-man’s-land where I’m not hungry.’
You freeze up at the sound of knocking on your window.
Your eyes slowly pan over to the covered glass. You rise to your feet.
You shake your head, trying to remember to think rationally. ‘This place is very high off the ground for a stalker.’ Despite yourself, you quickly go to the kitchen, grabbing the largest frying pan you can find and slowly approaching the window.
‘There isn’t even a proper ledge out there. You’re being paranoid.’ Slowly, you reach for the curtain, yanking it open.
You scream at the sight of the hanging figure, only realizing you recognized said figure after a couple seconds. Thoroughly embarrassed— ‘Yeah, I could never be a ninja.’—you slide the window open, face red. “What do you want, Raphael?”
He wears a shit eating grin. “What, scared?”
“Of a shadowy figure in my window? Yes.” You sit back down on the bed, voice cold. “You gonna just hang out there or what?”
He climbs inside. “Alright, so here’s the situation.” He sits on the windowsill; you feel the secondhand vertigo. “Donnie—first of all, where have you been?”
“Binging the most traumatic part of your lives so far on my phone so you and your brothers don’t get killed by swole Shredder.”
His face went pale. “Shredder?”
You blink, a factor you had admittedly completely forgotten becoming apparent. “You don’t know he intends to come to the city,” you remember. “That’s—”
“He what?”
You sigh. “He is the least of your concerns at this particular moment. What about Donatello?”
“No, back up.” His smile was completely gone. “When is he getting here?”
You shrug. “I dunno.”
“You don’t know?”
You put your hands up at his obvious rage. “Dude, it is honestly not that big of a deal right now. He doesn’t even get close to killing your dad until the end of season two.”
You are decidedly not helping matters. “He gets close to—”
“Are you gonna repeat everything I say or are you going to tell me what’s going on?”
“I’m gonna—what?” Raph is quite clearly not taking this news well.
You try to calm him down. “Take a deep breath, alright? It might not get to that point, but you have to tell me what’s going on first.”
He growls in frustration but follows your instructions. “Mikey found out that he can apparently talk to people online, and he found this site where he can talk to—”
“I’m gonna stop you right there.” You pick up your phone, typing away. “You can’t, under any circumstance, let him go talk to Bradford.”
“Well, I know it would be bad--”
“You misunderstand.” You get up, starting to grab your things. “Bradford is working for the Shredder.”
This seems to be news. “He’s what?”
“Working for Shredder.”
“But he’s—how?”
“You have bigger concerns than the how, currently.” You read the page you had pulled up again. “How long ago did he find this guy?”
“Yesterday, I think.”
“Then… hold on.” You read the summary of the episode in question more thoroughly. “Okay, so we aren’t totally fucked, but we gotta make sure he doesn’t see him again.”
“Wait, hold on.” He walks after you as you try to find your jacket. “Why? How could Shredder—”
“If he goes, he’s gonna talk to him about general shit, right?” You slip it on. “At some point, in return for learning his secret bullshit, he’s gonna want info on you and your dad.”
“Then the Shredder will know where we are!” The horror in his eyes is apparent.
“Exactly.” You pull on your shoes. “That, and you’ll have to confront foot soldiers, which isn’t good for anyone.”
“Wait, is Mikey gonna be alright?”
“I mean, he gets kidnapped, but—”
“We’re going. Right now.”
“Awesome.” You were already one foot out the door. “Close the window on your way out.”
You rush down to the first floor of the building, nodding acknowledgement to the door man as you look up and down the street. ‘He has a dojo or something, right?’ You try googling his dojo, only to find that, not only is it a chain, but that they are all incredibly spread out. ‘It’s at times like these,’ you contemplate, running towards the closest one, ‘that I wish I could drive.’
It takes you about 10 minutes of running to get to the place, only for it to be closed. You feel tempted to throw your phone.
‘Wait, when does it—hold on.’ You already hate timelines. You sit down on the curb, pulling your phone out again to find some clips. ‘So, Chris and Mikey meet up some time after patrol, order pizza, and then it’s sunrise.’ You look up at the slowly lightening sky. ‘Okay, so that means they’re currently ordering, right? Because it was clearly dark in that last scene.’ You put your head in your hand. ‘I mean, it is, right? Because those are just wall separator things, not windows, since the sky was very clearly green in that next scene.’ You get to your feet. ‘So I just need to find that billboard with that specific graffiti and main message and we’re good to go, right?’ You groan. ‘But there have to be a thousand billboards in fucking NYC.’
You stop, smiling slightly at the graffiti. ‘Is that not a purple dragon?’ You grin, going back to running. ‘I just need to get to Chinatown, right? Is that their territory?’ You swallow, turning a street corner. ‘I guess we’ll find out.’
The buildings tower around you as you wander the streets, the quiet desolation ringing in your ears with the force of a gong. The pounding of your feet against the pavement does little to stifle the silence. The gang in question may not be a challenge or concern for vigilantes, but to you? You are barely a flower now, bright and beautiful and oh so easy to crush. But you cannot and will not stand still for long. The walls of the alleys you run crush your sides and the darkness strangles you, but despite the beating of your heart begging you to stop, you cannot. How can you?
You can stop what comes next. That is what fuels you. Never mind the fact you must stumble to a halt to vomit into the nearest dumpster who knows how many times, the taste of acid staining your tongue. You can rewrite history.
But you cannot.
You walk around for approximately too long before correctly citing that this is, in fact, futile. You start to panic.
You turn back around. ‘He goes back to talk to his brothers, right?’ You feel your body start to shake. You keep your phone to your ear, pretending to talk to someone as you run around like a headless chicken so as to not get bothered, hopefully. ‘Then I still have a chance to catch him before he leaves, right? At least he won’t get kidnapped.’ You look around quickly, slipping into an alleyway and prying off a manhole cover, climbing into the sewer. You pull the cover back into place and start running along them, the smell nauseating in the darkness suffocating. ‘Please tell me I remember where this stupid lair is.’
You laugh in relief when you see the abandoned subway, sprinting down the tunnel. ‘I can catch him,’ you promise yourself. ‘I can catch him before—’
You slam into someone. They grab your wrist before you fall. “Yo, are you alright?”
“Mikey!” You feel your whole body relax, but the relief is quickly squashed. ‘Thank fuck.’ You grab his shoulders. “You can’t see Bradford again.”
“Wait, what?” He groaned. “Did Raph set you up to this?”
“What? No!” As the adrenaline and panic start to wear off, you feel your body begin to falter at the excessive strenuous physical activity, panic, no food or water for two days and sleep deprivation. You dig your fingernails into your palms to try to keep yourself grounded. “He just said that you were friends with him or something and I went looking for you!”
“Look,” he sighed, letting go of you and not noticing the obvious slur in your voice, “I get it, alright? Not all of us can have a super awesome friend like Chris—”
“He’s working for Shredder, dipshit.” You feel the ground spinning as your skull rips itself apart. “Coolness be gone, that bitchass Dogpound fucker.” You have no idea what you are saying. ‘Huh,’ you muse, struggling to stay on your feet. ‘Usually, it takes longer than this to shut down.’
“Shredder?” You cannot feel things, so you have no idea what his actual reaction is. “He’s here?”
“Yep.” And with that, you collapse.
--
Suffice it to say, when you wake up, you feel like absolute shit, with a pounding headache, extreme fatigue, and an obvious desire to not move from the bed in which you lay.
Thinking hurts. You decide against it for the time being.
You hear typing, soft muttering, the scratching of pencil against paper. You do not want to open your eyes; whatever you are laying under is warm. You try flexing your fingers. You can, but it is barely worthy of being called a twitch. You feel sick and gross and sticky and like you are eating yourself from the inside out, but you are also very aware that moving will not help matters. Besides, what small part of you is not covered is absolutely freezing.
You let out a soft groan from a particularly egregious pound from your head. You hear the typing stop.
“Y/N?” Donatello’s voice is incredibly soft. “Are you alright?”
You do not answer. Your throat feels like it is filled with sand.
“Oh, right.” You feel the mattress shift under you. “You—right.” He clears his throat. “You, uh, probably want to know what happened, right?”
You find yourself in between sleep and consciousness. You do not exactly understand what he’s saying, but his voice is pleasant to listen to.
“Mikey carried you back,” he explains. “He said you started talking about Chris Bradford working for The Shredder and collapsed.” A pause. “Leo thought it would be a good idea to go take him down since he already spilled the beans.”
‘You aren’t helping.’ “Everyone got out alright.” He is writing something. “We don’t know how much Shredder knows or how he found us; Master Splinters said that the war has just begun or something to that effect.” He pauses again. His voice is almost hesitant now. “If you spoke, I’d ask how…how this ends, who wins the day.” He chuckles dryly. “Now that I say it out loud, I guess it’s pretty clear that you wouldn’t tell me, would you? Rightfully so, I guess; I don’t know exactly how that sort of information might change things. Still,” he sighs, “it is so… so frustrating, having information just out of reach, especially for someone like me. But you—… you probably know that too, don’t you?”
It is not as if you can refute what he says.
He clears his throat. “A-anyways,” he rambled, voice tight with awkwardness, “sorry for ranting. This would be totally embarrassing if you weren’t so clearly incapable of coherent thought.” You hear the shuffling of paper. “As far as your health is concerned,” he continues, “without being able to take a blood test for obvious reasons, I can only conclude based on a totally-not-creepy physical exam that you’re just incredibly malnourished and exhausted. I don’t really have anything to actually prescribe you, but ya know… eat. Drink, too; just perform basic bodily functions.”
He looks down at you from his seat at the foot of his bed, your eyes having fluttered shut again. “I…” he took a breath, starting again. “Remember what you said the other day? About me being able to kill you with my bare hands?” He looks back over at the line of code he is working on, ignoring the minute shaking in his hands. “I remember… do I kill someone?” He swallows, eyes focusing on the letters in front of him. “I can’t really imagine it, why I’d want to.” He covers his face with his hands. “I know I’m a ninja, but it’s just—” He feels his voice start to rise. His eyes focus on your sleeping face; he calms back down for your sake. His words are slow and deliberate. “I always thought that we were doing all this for a fight we’d never have, that we would never have to do something like that, because… well, I don’t remember why, but I just—…” His voice dies in his throat.
‘Staring at her like this is creepy.’ He stands up, gathering his things. ‘You can’t get yourself worked up over something like this. You just met her, and your hesitance is not anyone’s problem but yourself.’ “Just…” Despite himself, he mumbles out a soft plea. “Please, don’t let me do something stupid.” He does not know who he’s talking to
He slips out of the room.
You would not remember this happened.
He would.
Any longer fics to get us through the pandemic? Thanx! (No waycest please) :)
Hi Nonny!
We're living through difficult times right now and many of us could probably use a little comfort. I hope there are a few fics on this list that bring you some joy.And if you can, spread the love and leave comments and/or kudos on works you liked and brighten an author's day!
Be kind and stay safe
Longer Fics
L For Lucky (M for Mine) by orphan_account, Ray/Mikey, 42k, Explicit. “Yeah, look.” Mikey turns his head to peer at the crowd over his shoulder. “This is going to seem weird, but.” He stares behind him and seems, for a moment, at a loss for words. “Well, there’s no tasteful way to say it.” Mikey looks Ray in the eye and just shrugs. “This is a highly organized sexual gathering for very specifically kinky people.” Ray feels a bit of spittle lodge in his throat and tries his best not to sputter when he disagrees, “That’s actually a pretty tasteful description of an orgy.”
Paradox 'verse by stoplightglow, Frank/Gerard, 42k, Mature, Teen And Up Audiences. You know the saying. The best part about hitting rock bottom is that you get to meet a hot psychic.
Skin of the Canvas by sinsense, Frank/Gerard, 42k, Mature. The typical nude model is someone like Phil. Phil is forty-nine and paunchy. He's starting to go gray at his temples and in his pubic hair; he likes to pose on a stool, curving his back and curling his fingers together between his knees. Phil is secretly awesome -- he likes the Misfits and builds model trains -- but he's not what Gerard would call prime ogling material. Neither are any of the other models who have posed for the life modeling or anatomy classes Gerard has taken. This semester, Anna was kind of cute, but she whined about the conditions the entire time she was there. In his four years of art school, anyway, Gerard has never once dealt with being attracted to the model. But this guy is hot. --- Or: Gerard goes to art school. Frank is a nude model. Somehow their relationship gets off the ground, in spite of everything working against them.
Let The Darkness Lead You Home by rivers_bend, Frank/Gerard, 49k, Explicit. Vampires are in charge and most of the humans on earth are prey, so Frank Iero's parents have him train as a cyber tech to protect him. Leaving the family he's born into may have saved his life, but his parents never could have expected the lengths he'd go to in order to find a new family to call home.
Stunning Someone by morbid_beauty, Frank/Gerard, 82k, Explicit. Frankie, a tattoo artist living in Brooklyn, has basically everything ze wants...except, like, someone to cuddle with at night. As lame as that sounds. Gerard, an art student living in Manhattan, meets someone of questionable gender and starts a friendship with an unrequited crush. (Or: the one where Frankie is genderfluid, Gerard is kind of ignorant to much of the queer community, and sometimes you just fall for a stunning someone.)
Envision the Magic by innocent_wolves, Frank/Gerard, 69k, Teen And Up Audiences. Gerard is a talented magician, responsible for much of the success of the famous Envision Destiny cruise ship. He's also one of those people. You know, one of those people who just seem to take up all the space they come across with their arrogance and confidence. You wouldn't wanna touch their personality with a 10-foot pole, but still people admire them. That is beyond Frank. Working behind the cruise ship bars and seeing Gerard pretty much every day, he can't understand what's so great about him. Besides, everybody else doesn't have to deal with his snide remarks and rude comments. Because if there's one thing Gerard seems to love, it's the act of constantly pestering Frank.
Rentverse by gala_apples, Frank/Mikey, Ashlee/Patrick/Pete and more, 77k, Teen And Up Audiences, Explicit. It's Frank's senior year, and it seems like he's constantly having new experiences, at least half of which come as a complete surprise to him. He falls in love, comes out, and has sex, not necessarily in that order. /// It's Pete's senior year, and with every day comes a new mistake. But he can handle them, as long as his friends can.
(To Die Will Be) An Awfully Big Adventure by FayJay, Frank/Gerard, Lindsey/Gerard, 73k, Mature. Gerard has always vaguely liked the idea of being a vampire, in much the same way he's always vaguely liked the idea of time travel, or of being a pirate - but it's only when he wakes up dead that he realises that not all his fans (or friends) are actually human. This is rather a shock to the system, but Gerard does his best to deal with the fact that he's now an undead American, and he's lucky enough to get a little help from an unexpected corner. Just as he thinks he's starting to get the hang of being a vampire, however, everything suddenly goes to hell in a handbasket, and before he knows it there are angry vampires slayers chasing him around LA, and an urgent appointment with the Fairy Queen looming before him... A story about love, family, metamorphosis, art, trust and geekery.
Fit to be tied by maryangel, Frank/Gerard, 56k, Explicit. Frank is a bartender. Gerard is an alcoholic. They were clearly made for each other. Also, Frank is a werewolf.
Only Going One Way by ataratah, jjtaylor, Frank/Gerard, 73k, Mature. Crossover with due South. Constable Gerard Way of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Detective Frank Iero of the Chicago PD team up find Mikey Way in a city where bowling alley score cards hide secret codes, where the good guys are either lying or undercover (and sometimes lying about being undercover), and where criminal bakers make drug-laced frosting.
Time Travel 'verse by ladyfoxxx, Frank/Gerard, Ray/Mikey, 79k, Explicit, General Audiences. In which 2005!Frank and Fun Ghoul get it on. Then Frank accidentally winds up in 2019.
play and record, held down together by morphosyntactic, Mikey/Pete, 54k, Explicit. High school AU. Mikey Way likes keeping his head down and blending into the background at school. Then Frank signs the two of them up to do the school's weekly radio show, and keeping his head down gets more difficult, especially when he keeps running into senior soccer star Pete Wentz everywhere he goes.
Rock and Roll Never Looked so Beautiful by corruptedkid, Frank/Gerard, 58k, Explicit. Gerard Way is a rising solo artist, set to become the next big thing in the alternative scene. Frank Iero is a trashy punk with a reputation of his own as the frontman of Pencey Prep. When their paths cross, a love story is born, only to come crashing down when Gerard hits it big. As Gerard ascends to the A-list, Frank adjusts to life on his own. He almost manages it - until two years later, when fate puts him face to face with Gerard once more. Everything has changed, but the connection between them is still there. Their story has ended once before, but if they're lucky, they just might make a new one.
It's Hard to Say "I Do" When I Really, Really Do by wakingup, Mikey/Pete, 58k, Not Rated. Pete is trying to not fuck up this time. His friends don't have much faith in him, even though they love him. Mikeyway makes this easier and harder at the same time.
I never told you what I do for a living. by not0_fuckin_kay, Frank/Gerard, 60k+, PG-13 to NC-17. Frank Iero, male nurse at Pete Wentz's private hospital and possibly more to one new patient he can't keep his eyes off of. When a new pateint is brought in with amnesia, just days before Christmas, and with nothing but the clothes on his back and a strange drawing, it's left to Frank to find out who he is and what happened to him. When he does, it changes Frank's life forever, as he's thrust into love and health scares he never thought would complicate his life. This is the story of how he tries to make it through, juggling his job and his love-life and just trying to make things better. With Patrick the doctor, Bob the ward supervisor, Travis the unlikely therapist, and Mikey, the sometimes wannabe homicidal geek.
The Marching Band AU by frankiesin, Frank/Gerard, Mikey/Pete, Brendon/Dallon, 150k, all ratings. A bunch of gay teens are in a band and do dumb things while in high school. There will be a lot of pairings, each part can be read without reading the others, and the series is in chronological order.
Gerard Way's (Vampire) Detective Agency by jjtaylor, Pennyplainknits, Frank/Gerard, Mikey/Pete, Bob/Ray, Lindsey/Jamia, Spencer/Brendon, 164k, General Audiences to Mature. Pete, in Decaydance Mansion, with a yarrow stake. Frank and Gerard, in the greenhouse, with a plant of questionable origin. Bob, everywhere you look, with a gang of assassins for justice. Vampires, valets, pamphlets, haunted furniture, dub-thrall, disembodied voices, zombie couriers, and sinister rituals.
Nightswimming by waxjism, Mikey/Pete, Frank/Gerard, 163k, Not Rated. Summertime and the livin' is easy...
Unholyverse by Bexless, Frank/Gerard, Ray/Mikey, 187k, General Audiences, Mature, Explicit. Religion! Horror! Exorcisms! Piercings! And Gerard is a priest.
shut up and drive by Trojie, uglowian, Patrick/Mikey/Pete, 139k, Teen And Up Audiences. Pete Wentz is the grid girl, Andy Hurley loves him (not like that), and Jared Leto is the bad guy. A.K.A.: the bandom The Fast and the Furious AU that literally no one asked for.
Rise Turtles as Pokemon: Mega Evolutions
For Mega Evolutions
Mikey: Mega x -Fighting/Fire- Ignited Mikey. The side effect of this form is that his temper can be easily triggered. But he can learn how to control it. He would get a boost in speed, special attack and attack.
 Mega y - Fighting/Fairy- Because of his playful nature and he can learn the move Play Rough. He gets a boost in his special attack and special defense. Mikey has the highest special defense on the team.
Donnie:  Mega x- Fighting/Steel- His battle shell takes over and he becomes Cyborg Donnie. His special defense, defense, and special attack would get boosted. Or Fighting/water where his grace and strength is amplified with a sharp increase in speed and in his special attack.
Mega y- Fighting/Psychic- brain boosted Donnie… look I understand how dangerous a Donnie with Psychic abilities could be, and that is why I would recommend the move Calm Mind to help him keep his mental balance to avoid the side effects of him being more prone to yield to his passive aggressiveness and evil tendencies. I might even write a safety manual on how to handle this very difficult but powerful mega evolution. The move Calm Mind is also great because it boosts Special Attack and Donnie (enspecially in this form) has the highest special attack stat on the team.
Leo:  Mega x- Fighting/Electric- He’s already the fastest but he’s gotta go faster. He is upgraded into Lightening Slider. His now ridiculous speed stat makes him pretty formidable on the battlefield.
 Mega y- Fighting/Dark? He is mischievous and a bit of a prankster and him using trickster tactics as a ninja is perfect. He can also learn the moves Taunt and Pursuit. Or Leo could be Fighting/ Steel where he will become something like a knight and he wields dual blades (which is cool can he can learn the move Sword Dance). He would sacrifice some of his speed for defense but his stats would be fairly balanced.
Raph:  Mega x- Fighting/Ground-  His defense stats rises high and his attack stat increases, in order to help him do what cares about doing the most, protect his little bros.
Mega y- Pure Fighting- He gives up the ground typing to become the ultimate combat master, no more holding back (so his defenses decreases but his speed increases and his physical attack increases shaply.) He can learn the move Bulk Up to help out with some of that defense loss, but opponents should be wary of his strength. Honestly though I don’t know what other type he would be.
Theoretical mega evolution: Mega z
Fighting /Dark or Fighting/Dragon
All of them could adopt the dark typing because they are ninjas or the dragon typing, because previous incarnations where they became dragon warriors through mystic mojo. This is just a theory though.
To apologize for doing nothing productive on this blog over the past few days i offer design ideas for the Rising Heroes AU babies???
Tora:
Age: 17
Gender: female
Sexuality: lesbian af
Parents: Raph and Atari
Personality: firey and hot-headed, but she's certainly inherited both her parents' soft hearted ways. She comes off as intimidating, but deep down she's actually goofy and fun-loving, even sentimental at times. Above all else, though, she has Raph's protective spirit and takes her position as eldest sister and eldest cousin very seriously. She's sort of the lieutenant of the team; not quite the leader, but she's always ready to take charge and help the team to victory.
Appearance: tall and stocky, wild brown curls, brown eyes, bright green skin (tougher like a turtle's skin), a flatter, softer shell on her back
Fun facts: she loves hip hop and hamburgers more than legally allowed, and hates every single horror movie ever. She'd much rather watch something funny or romantic
Aries:
Age: 16
Gender: trans guy
Sexuality: bi af
Parents: Donnie and Talise
Personality: He's about as chill as they come. It takes a lot to get him to panic, but once he reaches that point he's absolutely hysterical. He can act cocky and sarcastic like both his parents, but is just as empathetic and sensitive to emotion as Talise, and as such is the best listener in the group. While he loves a good fight, he puts his best talents to work as the team's researcher- the spy if you will. He can learn anything about anyone and is slowly developing his own mental manipulation abilities to really up his spying game. He's clever and smart, taking after both parents in Donnie's love of science and Talise's fascination with the supernatural.
Appearance: dark blonde hair, heterochromatic eyes (the left one is grey and the right one looks almost violet), pale green skin with some darker jade green splotches on his face, arms, and torso, slightly taller than Tora, lanky form, sharp canine teeth (inherited from Donnie bc in this AU the purple boi has those softshell fangs), freckles on his cheeks
Fun facts: when they found out they were having a baby, Donnie and Talise had one major problem; he wanted a scientific name while they wanted a more magical name. They argued right up until Talise have birth, and after seeing them suffer like that (their labor was not an easy one), Donnie decided that they deserved to pick the name for their son after all that work. Moved by his decision, Talise picked a name that fitted both their tastes; a constellation and a zodiac sign. Aries is a talented drummer and loves old rock (as do hos cousins Enzo and Ezzie, who are good guitarists and singers. They have a lil rock trio and it's pure and good)
Lorenzo:
Age: 15 (the older twin by 2 hours)
Gender: demiboy
Sexuality: pan af!
Parents: Leo and Vinny
Personality: He might be just a tiny bit reckless, but he makes up for his impulsive nature with an unyielding bravery. He's every bit as adventurous as his mother, and as charming as his dad. He feels like he needs to live up to their legacies as a Battle Nexus champion and the leader of a team of ninjas. Unlike Leo, however, his son starts out as the leader, with Tora there to balance him out and support him along the way. He can act with a lot of confidence even if he doesn't feel so sure of himself. Surprisingly, he has a quiet side as well, and can be very gentle and understanding from time to time.
Appearance: short, dark brown hair, lots of tiny light blue freckles, several bright red markings on his face, three bright red markings on each of his arms and thighs, two large, bright red splotches on his lower back, yellow markings on his tail, lime green skin, a flatter shell on his back, about the same height as Tora, lean frame, long limbs that give him a sort of gangly look, brown eyes.
Fun facts: Enzo is a sucker for comics, and loves to draw his own (only Ezzie has ever seen them and she's been sworn to secrecy about them). Not only is he good at writing comics, he's a talented songwriter as well! He writes rap rhymes, poems and ballads and they're absolutely stunning.
Esmeralda:
Age: 15 (the younger twin by 2 hours)
Gender: female
Sexuality: bi af
Parents: Leo and Vinny
Personality: The mellow twin and the strategist of the team, she's a logical thinker with a knack for getting out of a tough situation with brilliant plans. She's snarky and cocky most of the time, but she's got her soft spots and they show themselves every now and again. She's an innovative thinker and shows an incentive spirit her uncle Donnie hopes to help nurture. She's not likely to start a fight, but she sure as hell can finish one.
Appearance: Shoulder length brown hair, brown eyes, three light blue spots on both her cheeks, bright red markings over her eyes like her father's, three yellow markings on both her arms and thighs, bright red markings on her tail, slightly darker shade of green than her twin, flatter shell on her back, second-shortest person on the team (and highly bitter about it).
Fun facts: Ezzie has a photogenic memory, she can remember a surprising amount of information just by reading and looking something over for a few minutes. This has definitely helped her learn more languages than anyone else in the family; she's fluent in English, Spanish, Japanese, and French.
Risa:
Age: 14
Gender: nonbinary
Sexuality: pan af
Parents: Mikey and Rhys
Personality: Tough little cookie right here. The official muscle of the team, they're surprisingly aggressive when in battle. Out of it, they've still got an aggressive streak, but it's overshadowed by their friendly energetic nature. They're very confident and is a jack of all trades, showing talent in all sorts of fields.
Appearance: Mink yokai; brown fur all over her body, grown longer on her head to resemble hair, amber eyes, shortest member of the team, stocky build, fairly muscular
Fun facts: They aren't pyrokinetic like their father, but they do use his kusari-fundo as their primary weapon, and under Talise's guidance has become surprisingly familiar with handling the fire demon. They've taken a real interest in the supernatural, and wants to learn about all the mythical beings on Earth.
Taigen:
Age: 14
Gender: male
Sexuality: gay af
Parents: Raph and Atari
Personality: The real heart of the team, he's the one who looks for peaceful solutions to conflicts. He's thoughtful and intuitive, very in touch with emotions. He always has a calm disposition, and is a bit of a pacifist. He doesn't like fighting, and is always confident there's another way to solve a problem.
Appearance: the only human in the group; pale skin, brown eyes that turn violet when he's tapping into his powers, shoulder length black hair shaved on the left side, light dusting of freckles on his cheeks, shoulders, and arms, shorter than Tora and Enzo but taller than Ezzie, lean, slim form
Fun facts: He was born with psychic abilities, and Talise is training him in the art of controlling those abilities. When he's not training, he likes to garden! He loves growing edible things, much to the joy of the family cooks Mikey and Enzo.
Black and Blue
A/N: Chapter 2 of Leorai Week, Fantasy.  Be sure to read Chapter 1, Black and Blue first, because I’m writing my 7 days in the form of a consecutive short story. #blackandblue
Some days I’m sure I’ll lose to fate
Some days I cannot find my faith
But I just fight on
I just fight on
I just fight on baby
– Sia, Black & Blue
 Chapter 2
Fantasy
As he breeched the surface of the tunnel the flicker of red light, the flame, grew steadily brighter.  He climbed out, allowing more of the warm red glow toward my eyes. Then he hauled me up.  What I hadn’t expected, hadn’t had a chance to block as I climbed to my hands and knees, was his foot to my stomach sending me rolling across the cavern floor, smashing my head against a rock.  Then that flicker of firelight, extinguished….
“Are ya okay, human? Ya hit yer head on that tree branch pretty hard.”
What? Tree branch my ass, it was a damned rock.  I opened my eyes, prepared for the darkness of the cave, but the sky was bright, the sun- where the hell was the sun? Where was the rip in the universe? Where was the Dark?
“Uh, if we’re going to catch the boat we need to keep moving.” A green, three-fingered hand thrust itself into my face.  “Here, let me help you up.”
My eyes locked on the familiar scar across his knuckles, my heart skipping beats as I lifted my gaze to meet eyes brighter than a neon sky. But something wasn’t right.  What the hell was Leonardo wearing?  A cowboy hat?  Carrying six shooters?  I scampered to my feet, quite unlike an elegant kunoichi. Dirt wafted into the air coating my- what the hell was I wearing?  The jeans were fine, but leather chaps?  Cowboy- I mean cowgirl boots?  As I dropped my gaze to a button down shirt and open tasseled leather vest, the brim of a hat slid down shielding my eyes.  Oh, what new hell is this?
“Come on, human, we ain’t got all day.”
Raphael?  My head snapped up, and I shoved the hat back, rebalancing it on my head.  Don’t know why I didn’t take the damn thing off, except that it did take the sharp white glow off things.  Oh gods, Raphael doesn’t look right either.  I took in the turtle wearing chain-mail and a clunky metal helmet.  Oh gods. Not just any metal helmet.  The Kuro Kabuto.  I swallowed hard.
“Get up, already.  Gees, I still don’t know why we gotta drag you along. It ain’t like yer a wizard-” Raphael pointed to Michelangelo, who wore a purple gown covered in large silver stars, wielding—Splinter’s staff.  My stomach turned.  What was this?  What was happening?  Had I gone mad?  Is this what April felt like, all crazy and confused? But Raphael pointed to her next. “Or useful like a psychic.”
The spunky redhead wore a yellow organza gown that reminded me of Belle from Beauty and The Beast, the ridiculous musical movie that was visually stunning, yet annoying at the same time.  But Michelangelo had insisted we sit through it.
Raphael growled.  “Are ya even listenin’?  Good for nothing, human.  Not useful like turtle-genius over there.” He pointed to Donatello who looked… well exactly like Donatello.  Except for the horn-rimmed glasses.  What was that white bit between the lenses?  Had he taped them together?
“And ya sure as shit ain’t a princess.”  Raphael half-bowed in a very I-just-entered-the-dojo sort of way, then mumbled a sad excuse for an apology.  “Sorry fer cursin’, yer Highness.”
Your highness?
My eyes coasted over the wizard, the psychic, the genius, the warrior, and Leonardo’s outstretched hand- vaguely I wondered what role he played- then I lost a breath.
A white kimono, folded perfectly at the waist, covered in pink cherry blossoms beneath a slender neck, lead to the most beautiful oval face I’d ever seen.  My eyes filled. “M-mother?”
“Don’t be ridiculous?  How hard ya hit yer head?”  Raph reached out to swat the back of my head and I lifted a hand to block him but found my reflexes too slow. What was wrong with me?  I wasn’t moving right.
Fortunately, Leonardo blocked Raphael’s attempt and offered me his hand again.  “As I was saying, we are all important.  Everyone serves a purpose.  Give me your hand, we’ll get you on your feet and still make our ship if we leave now.”
The entourage made their way, April first, then Donatello, Michelangelo, then Mother, Raphael, then Leonardo and I trailed behind.  What was my purpose?  I could sense I was no longer part mutant.  None of my serpent instincts present.  I had none of my kunoichi reflexes.  I glanced down at my waist.  I wasn’t even carrying guns, like Leo.  Though we were dressed the same.
I glanced from side to side, to the square and rectangular buildings that resembled something out of a western movie.  I wouldn’t know that much about their appearance had Raphael not insisted we watch westerns to begin with.  Ugh.  Too much television.
At the end of the dirt road was a river, a long white ship with masts spread as though there was wind in them, though no breeze blew. We were the only passengers, boarded together and spread about as we set sail on a windless sea.
Leonardo was tying a rope to something I could not see. But he was there, fit and beautiful, younger than I knew we were.  He glanced at me beneath the brim of his hat, a semi-smile curving one corner of his mouth before he looked away.  I was set to approach him, to try to talk to him, but what would I say?  Why have you turned your back on your family?  On me?  I love you.  Come back with me.  Come home. But this wasn’t the Leonardo I was struggling with, nor was it the one I knew and loved, and yet he was at the same time.  My feet inched toward him like magnets propelled by a force I could not stop, yet I resisted because this made no sense and it was futile.
The ship landed and the crew formed their marching line again, down the ramp into another town.  This one had a corral right by the shore, with hay bales stacked near a post board fence, men trying to sell guns offering different models up for target practice.  Leonardo tipped his hat at me then bowed before the princess- my mother.  “Ma’am I have some business to attend to.  I will rejoin you later?”
She nodded graciously and he ventured toward the market.
As I followed the procession deeper into the city a strange sensation began to build.  My feet wanted to gravitate to Leonardo, yet my hands ached to connect the people ahead of me and bind them together somehow.
This city was different, carved of white stone, sculptures of turtles where gargoyles might rest.  The statue of a rat- Splinter- my father, in the center of town square.
“We have to find it.  It’s here somewhere.” Donatello pointed East, to a building with giant columns resembling a museum. “Should we spread out and search, Majesty? Perhaps the archives will hold a clue.”
Michelangelo pointed Splinter’s staff toward the South, the sea calm waters below.  But it was the stars glowing above in a daytime sky that he spoke of.  “We should follow the constellations.  They know the way.”
Raphael, even in a knight’s armor still wielded his sai, pointing one toward darkness in the North.  “We’ll find it beyond the battle.  They’ve taken it, I know they have.  But I can get it back.  Send me, your Highness, I can get it back.”
April let out a grunt as she squint her eyes and rubbed her brow.  “I’m sensing something there to our West.  It’s there.  I-I can-feel it.”
My mother was silent, never spoke a word as she looked to me.
Hell if I knew which way to go.  I didn’t even know what we were looking for.  I swallowed hard.  She was so beautiful, her lashes long and dark over gentle brown eyes.  I opened my mouth and a question popped out. “What is it you’re looking for?”
She didn’t answer, only smiled.
My heart was galloping.  Whatever she wanted I would help her find it.  She tipped her head toward April, who began leading us toward a white arbor, woven with bright red roses.  She stepped through but I didn’t see her come out the other side. Donatello went next, then Raphael, Michelangelo, then my Mother.  A great sense of dread enveloped me as I approached what should be a garden entry.  I realized the world had fallen silent. There was no echo over the town, not from the men target practicing, not from the people shopping, coming and going. I looked around.  All of the townsfolk stood still as if paralyzed.  Leonardo turned as I glanced toward the range, his eyes meeting mine.  He was far enough away that I shouldn’t have been able to hear him.  Yet I did.
“Go on.  You’re more powerful than you think.”
I don’t know why I believed him, maybe my brain didn’t, but my heart knew.  My blood burned, my heart pumping hard as I approached the arbor, peering into the blinding white beyond.  I stepped through, blindly, knowing I was only human and had no power, but believed the fool turtleboy who’d promised me otherwise.
I tumbled downhill, noticing everything was varied shades of white and hard, the path beneath me marble that sparkled like diamonds. I landed on my butt in the center of a white circle, scanning the four white columned buildings but not seeing my friends- my family.  But I heard them screaming.
“Help! Help us!”
Above me they were rising into the sky their bodies spread eagle, like skydivers in reverse.  They clawed at the air as clouds swirled above them at their center a black hole opening, surely to swallow them up.
“Help!”
Only my mother never opened her mouth, while the rest screamed.
My feet dragged across the marble but while my torso stretched toward the sky, I refused the pull.  Simply denied it.  My palm lifted to the sky, great energy building inside me, searching for a way out as my feet bound to the ground.  Warm white light appeared to outline my palm, it stayed there as I willed my family to me, slowly curling my fingers in as they drew nearer with every breath.
Come back.  I’ve got you.  Stay with me. Please.
My mother was first, she reached for April, who reached for Donnie, who reached for Mikey, who reached for Raph.  But it was Mother’s fingers, her silken hand that interwove with mine.
I had them.
Then my feet began to drag, the marble peeling away like soil beneath my boots, leaving grooves.  No.  I searched, looking behind me for something to grab onto.
There he was.
Leonardo’s hand grasped mine and I was complete.  “I’ve got you.  Hold on, you’re more powerful than you know.”
My eyes were wet, my breath fleeting as I gasped.  “You keep saying that. H-how do you know?”
He smiled and I wished it were real.  Wished it true.  That he was there with me and I could touch him, feel the strength of him as he literally grounded me.  “Because, you are their anchor, and I am yours.”
Then he and everything around me, my mother, our family, were gone.
“Wake up, sleepyhead,” came a broken version of his voice.  One vacant of all that I loved in him.
There was something wet in my eyes as I opened them to the dim light of a torch.  A soft ember glow surrounding the vessel of our leader.  My love.  He was in there somewhere.  And if that dream led me to this nightmare it showed me one thing for certain along the way. The message was all backwards, all wrong.  Well partly. Because, I wasn’t our family’s anchor.
He was.
Hopefully, I was his.
Secret of the Sewers: Discovery Day
Things had been rather quiet for the Hamato family since their reunion at Galactic Enterprises. For the first time in months, there were no villains to fight, no injured or missing family members to worry about, and even Hisako’s nightmares seemed to have gone on vacation. Everyone was enjoying the peace and tranquility.
Of course, teenagers can only be peaceful for so long.
“Heads up Don!” Mikey shouted.
Donny looked up from his latest project just in time for a water balloon to connect with his face. He stood there for a moment, water dripping off of him and a blank look on his face. Mikey punched the air, grinning widely.
“Aw yeah!” he declared. “Perfect shot!”
Donnie shook his head, a small smile on his face as he reached for something under his work table. Seconds later, a water balloon connected with Mikey’s face, cutting off his triumphant laughter.
“You were saying?” Donny asked smugly.
Mikey wiped his face, then he reached for the bucket of water balloons beside him. Or at least he tried, but his hand only met air.
“Huh?”
“Lookin’ for something?” Raph asked.
Mikey froze, then slowly turned to see the red turtle standing beside him, holding the bucket of water balloons and tossing one up and down in his hand.
“Aw shell...” Mikey said, closing his eyes and bracing himself.
Both Don and Raph began pelting the orange turtle over and over, his shrieks filling the lair, as well as Don and Raph’s laughter. In the dojo, Splinter, Miwa, Hisako, and Leo were all meditating, though the latter three couldn’t help but smirk at the sounds.
“Sounds like Mikey’s finally getting his comeuppance.” Leo remarked.
“I’m surprised he didn’t try to hit us.” Miwa commented.
“He tried once.” Hisako replied. “I just sent the water balloons flying right back at him.”
Miwa giggled, imagining the look on Mikey’s face as his own projectiles turned on him.
“Now that I’d love to see.” she admitted.
“I’m pretty sure Donny has it recorded on his shell cell.” Leo commented.
That got all three siblings laughing, and even their sensei couldn’t help but crack a smile.
“While I am certain your brother deserves his comeuppance, I better go and make sure that his aggressors are not getting the living room soaked again.” Splinter interjected, rising to his feet.
As Splinter left the dojo, the three siblings ceased their attempts at meditation, rising as well. Hisako gave a stretch, then glanced over at Miwa.
“Hey, there’s this street fair going on down near the boardwalk.” Hisako remarked. “You want to go check it out with me? Maybe we could even swing by the roller coasters and ride a few.”
Miwa grinned.
“Sounds like a great idea.” she replied. “I’ve been wanting to visit the boardwalk since I got to New York.”
Hisako chuckled, then held out her hand. Miwa took it and the two dashed out of the Dojo.
“Dad, Hisako and I are going to that street fair by the boardwalk!” Leo could hear Miwa shouting as they made their way out of the lair.
“Have fun! And be safe!” Splinter called out.
Leo hear the sound of the doors to the lair opening and closing, signaling his sisters’ exit. He went out to join his brothers, then he caught sight of the calendar that hung by the door of the dojo. He glanced at it, noticing a small note written on the current date.
“Hisako’s Discovery Day” it read in dark green ink.
“That’s today?” Leo mumbled to himself. “I’d forgotten.”
Deciding that this couldn’t stand, Leo made his way out into the living room. Splinter had confiscated the remaining water balloons from Raph and Donny, and was currently helping a very wet Mikey dry off with an old towel.
“Alright boys,” Leo addressed. “We got a major mission to attend to.”
“What major mission?” Raph asked. “The Purple Dragons are a minor threat, the Foot have disappeared, Shredder’s dead, what do we have to worry about?”
“Hisako’s Discovery Day.” Leo told them.
Donny blinked, then pulled out his shell cell, checking the date on the screen. Raph immediately ducked into the dojo to check the calendar.
“Well whaddya know, it is her Discovery Day.” Raph remarked.
“I guess with all that’s happened, we kinda lost track of time, and dates.” Mikey added, pulling to towel off his head, leaving his hair even wilder and messier than usual.
“Right,” Leo agreed. “And given the year Hisako’s had, we need to make this one the best yet.”
“What are you thinking, Leo?” Donny questioned.
“A surprise party.” Leo replied, smirking.
Raph raised an eyebrow at that.
“Leo, Hisako is a psychic.” Raph reminded him. “Trying to surprise her is like trying to lie to Master Splinter. It’s impossible.”
“If she was here, yes.” Leo allowed. “However, she and Miwa aren’t here right now, and are no doubt going to be out of the lair for several hours, giving us plenty of time to set up a party without her finding out.”
“You seriously think we can pull this off?” Mikey asked.
“Not standing around gabbing about it we ain’t.” Raph told him. “I’ll call up Casey and see if he can bring some pizzas down to the lair.”
“I will handle preparing a cake.” Splinter offered.
“Leave decorations to me.” Donny declared. “I’ll have the entire lair looking better than ever.”
“Great.” Leo said with a smirk. “Now all we have to worry about are presents.”
“Correction.” Donny interjected, rummaging around his lab for supplies. “All of you have to worry about are presents. I already have the perfect gift for Hisako, and I’m certain she’s going to love it.”
“That’s good for you, Don.” Mikey grumbled. “But where the shell are we supposed to find gifts for Hisako?”
“Might I suggest the street fair Hisako mentioned?” Splinter offered.
“You mean the one she went to with Miwa?” Mikey asked. “Where she could see us and probe our minds if we were there?”
“Only if we’re caught little brother.” Raph replied, patting him on the shell. “Only if we’re caught.”
“Consider it a training exercise, my son.” Splinter suggested. “You all could certainly use one.”
Donny winced a bit, giving his brothers a sympathetic look, even if it was marred by a grin on his face.
“I’ve got some aloe vera for those burns if you need it.” he joked.
“Donny, quiet.” Mikey replied.
Hisako and Miwa walked toward the large street fair that had been erected in front of the boardwalk. There was music, games, little stands with various tchotchkes and knick knacks of all shapes and sizes, and a bigger variety of food and food trucks than either girl had ever seen before. To say Hisako was in awe of it all would be an understatement.
“Look at all this.” she gasped. “So many people. It’s all so… massive.”
Miwa placed a hand on her sister’s shoulder.
“You gonna be okay?” she asked, genuinely worried.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine.” Hisako assured her.
“You’re not gonna get a migraine from all the people here?” Miwa questioned.
“Not a chance.” Hisako promised. “After my experiences on D’Hoonib, I’ve learned to tune out the unnecessary voices and clear my mind. Basically, I’ve turned them all off.”
Miwa nodded, then the two sisters hooked arms, looking around.
“Where should we go first?” Miwa questioned.
“I don’t know about you, but I have always wanted to try a funnel cake.” Hisako answered.
“I think I see a stand for one not far from here.” Miwa told her.
The girls shared grins, then ran off for their deep fried treat.
Leo leapt across the roof-tops, making sure to stay in the areas where shadows were prominent. While it was the middle of the day, and a rather sunny one despite it being the beginning of October, the shadows provided ample cover for the turtle.
Pretty soon, he reached the street fair Hisako had mentioned, letting out a whistle at the size of it.
“Should have known it’d be big.” he said to himself. “At least this should make avoiding Hisako easier.”
With that, Leo leapt down to the ground and ducked behind a stand that appeared to be doing face painting. Already he could see little kids, and even some teenagers, running around with various pictures and decorations painted on their faces.
“Face paint, perfect.” Leo said quietly.
He rolled his sleeves all the way down, then slid a pair of gloves over his hands to hide his lack of fingers. After making sure his shell was completely hidden, he slipped into the crowd as if he had always been a part of it.
“Hey man, cool face paint!” a teenager called out to him. “You going for a hulk look?”
“Uh… yeah.” He replied. “Pretty neat, huh?”
“Totally.” the guy replied.
Leo repressed the urge to punch the air, happy that his impromptu plan worked out.
“Now, to find a gift for Hisako.”
Mikey stood in an alley not far from the street fair. He glanced left, then right, then silently slipped a mascot turtle head over his own head. He had scoured the dump for some type of disguise to wear, and when he laid hands on the turtle head, he had practically squealed in joy.
“This is perfect!” he exclaimed. “The ultimate ninja disguise!”
As he walked through the crowd, a little boy looked up at him curiously.
“Who are you?” he asked, pointing right at Mikey.
“I’m, uh…” He stammered, trying to wrack his brain for some kind of name. “I’m… Cowabunga… Carl! Yeah! I’m Cowabunga Carl!”
The little boy tilted his head a bit.
“Do you do tricks?” he asked.
“Just watch me.” Mikey told him.
Looking around, he grabbed some soft balls from a booth and began juggling them. The kid’s eyes lit up, and a few more little kids were gathering around, enamored by the turtle’s juggling trick. Mikey smiled, grateful Master Splinter used juggling to teach him hand-eye coordination.
“How’s that for a trick?” Mikey asked.
The kids all began applauding, eliciting a grin from the orange turtle. This was his first time ever receiving praise from anyone outside of his family, and he’d be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy it.
“You liked that, well just you wait. Cowabunga Carl has so many more tricks in store!” he promised.
Raph pulled an old Knicks ball cap on over his head, making sure the brim was pulled down over his eyes before flipping his hood on over it all. He rolled his sleeves down and stuffed his hands in his pockets before making his way into the crowd. He was surrounded on all sides by so many different people, and he found his fists unintentionally clenching in his pockets. He was quickly finding out he was not a fan of crowds.
“Keep it together Raphael.” he muttered to himself. “You can’t draw attention to yourself. Just find something for Hisako, then get the shell outta dodge.”
“Raphael?” April’s voice suddenly asked from behind him.
Raph jumped at the sound of his name before turning to see April walking up to him. She was looking at him confused, and more than a bit worried.
“Raph is that you?” she asked, keeping her voice down. “What are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same thing.” Raph replied. “Don’t you know not to sneak up on a turtle?”
“Don’t you know not to come out to a public place like this?” April countered. “In broad daylight no less, and without a disguise.”
“I am in disguise.” Raph argued.
“A baseball cap and a hoodie?” April questioned sardonically.
“What do you want?” Raph asked. “A trench coat and a fedora?”
April groaned, pinching the bridge of your nose.
“This is getting nowhere.” she mumbled. “Why are you even here? This is possibly the worst place for someone like you to be.”
“Looking for a present for Hisako.” Raph explained.
“A present?” April repeated. “Why?”
“Today is Hisako’s Discovery Day.” Raph answered. “We’re throwing her a surprise party and I’m trying to find a present for her.”
“Oh.” April said, feeling like someone had taken the wind out of her sails. “So, you’re out here for Hisako.”
“Exactly.” Raph confirmed.
“Well then, maybe I can help you.” April offered. “Maybe if we work together, we can find the perfect present for her.”
“Sounds good to me.” Raph replied, giving her a thumbs up.
April quickly grabbed his hand, shoving it down.
“Newsflash, Raph.” she hissed. “Normal people have five fingers.”
“Right, sorry.” he replied, sticking his hand back in his pocket.
“C’mon.” April declared, walking deeper into the fair. “The sooner we start looking, the better.”
Miwa and Hisako sat on a bench, both of them practically coated in powdered sugar. The decimated remains of their funnel cake sat between them as they tried in a futile effort to lick the sugar off if their fingers.
“Man, all those TV shows weren’t kidding when they said that these things were good.” Hisako remarked.
“Agreed.” Miwa replied, rubbing her hands together to dislodge bits of powdered sugar.
The two girls remained on the bench, Hisako leaning back as she felt the cool wind drift through her hair.
“I wonder if this is what it feels like.” she said, looking up at the few fluffy clouds rolling across the sky.
“How what feels?” Miwa questioned, turning towards her sister.
Hisako’s eyes never left the sky.
“Being normal.” she replied.
Miwa chuckled somewhat, leaning back as well and gazing up at the clouds.
“Honestly, I don’t know.” she replied. “I’ve never exactly been normal myself.”
“True.” Hisako admitted. “You were trained to be a deadly ninja assassin.”
“Says the girl who lives in the sewers with turtles and a rat.” Miwa quipped lightly.
Hisako playfully punched Miwa’s arm, still smiling.
“Don’t forget, you live right there with me.” she jabbed jokingly.
“Touché little sis.” Miwa allowed.
The two shared a brief chuckle, then returned to their peaceful cloud watching. After a moment, Miwa spoke up again.
“Just out of curiosity, what do you think of when you imagine being normal?” She questioned.
“April.” Hisako replied simply. “I mean, she’s the most normal person I know. She went to school, graduated, she’s going to college, got a job… you know, all that stuff normal people do.”
Miwa let a small laugh slip through, eliciting a confused look from Hisako.
“What’s so funny?” she asked.
“Well, I don’t know about you, but all that stuff just sounds, no offense to April, boring.” Miwa explained.
“Maybe, but she didn’t have to worry about psychic powers, mutants, ninjas, aliens… Not until she met us.” Hisako argued.
“But I bet if you asked her, she’d say she’s enjoyed her abnormal life.” Miwa countered.
“You really think so?” Hisako asked.
“Positive.” Miwa replied, getting to her feet. “Besides, being normal is overrated. I personally like being abnormal.”
Hisako’s smile grew as she too rose to her feet.
“You’re right.” she agreed. “I’ll take abnormal any day.”
Miwa tossed their trash in a nearby trash can, then took her sister’s hand.
“How about we hit the roller coasters next?” she suggested. “I’m personally curious about the Comet Coaster.”
Hisako grinned.
“You read my mind.”
Both girls snorted, then raced off towards the rides.
Down in the lair, Donny vaulted across the second floor of the lair, sticking of streamers of every shade of green you could think of. Green balloons were tied to every column, and a banner hung right in view of the door that read ‘HAPPY DISCOVERY DAY’.
“There we go.” Donny declared, jumping down and landing right in the middle of the living room. “What do you think, Sensei?”
Splinter stuck his head out of the kitchen, a flour covered apron tied around his waist as he looked around the lair. A smile graced his snout as he gave a nod of approval.
“Well done, Donatello.” He complimented. “I am certain your sister will love them.”
“I hope so.” Donny remarked, giving a stretch as he returned to his lab. “Now that the decorations are done, I need to get back on Hisako’s present.”
He grabbed a safety mask, placing it over his mouth and the slits that served as his nose, then he grabbed a can of green spray paint and began spraying away at his project. He became so enraptured by his work that he didn’t hear the door to the lair opening. Luckily, Splinter’s ears perked at the sound, and once again, he withdrew from the kitchen to see who it was.
“Hey everyone!” Casey called, balancing several pizza boxes in his hand as he entered the lair. “Whoa, did I miss out on a party?”
“That you did not, Mr. Jones.” Splinter answered, relieving Casey of his pizzas. “The party had yet to begin.”
Casey looked around at Donny’s decorations, squinting at the sign.
“What’s a Discovery Day?” Casey questioned. “Some sort of mutant holiday?”
“It’s the anniversary of the day we found Hisako.” Donny explained, never looking up from his work. “The guys and I share a Mutation day, so Hisako has a discovery day. It’s the closest thing we’ve got to birthdays.”
Casey let out a whistle.
“Man, just when I think I know everything there is to know about you guys, you throw me another curve ball.” He commented, glancing around the lair. “Hey, if this is supposed to be Hisako’s birthday, where is everybody?”
“Leo, Raph, and Mikey are all out looking for presents for Hisako.” Donny explained, finally setting down the spray can and removing his safety mask. “Meanwhile, Hisako and Miwa are out at the street fair in town.”
“Cool.” Casey remarked, looking around. “Well, I ain’t gotta return to work, seeing as you guys were my last delivery, so maybe I could lend a hand.”
“I could use some assistance in decorating the cake.” Splinter informed him.
Casey grinned, then cracked his knuckles.
“Just point me in the direction of the icing.” He told the rat.
Leo browsed through the various stands and tents that had been erected all across the street fair, each one selling a different type of item or ware. He had lost count of all of the booths he had passed, many of them selling clothes, jewelry, or various decorations that Leo couldn’t even dream of Hisako wanting.
“Ugh… why did I think this was a good idea?” Leo groaned. “Parties we’ve done before, but we’ve never done presents…”
He turned and leaned against a lamp post, resting his forehead against the metal.
“What the shell am I supposed to get Hisako?” he muttered.
“Having trouble, young one?” a wizened old voice called out.
Leo turned, noticing an old Chinese man sitting in front of a booth displaying many Chinese pieces of artwork. The man was giving Leo a smile, gesturing for him to approach. Leo turned away from the lamp post, approaching the booth.
“Were you talking to me?” Leo questioned.
The old man nodded.
“Your eyes are conflicted.” The man explained. “Trying to make a decision that appears impossible.”
“Yeah…” Leo admitted, rubbing the back of his head. “My sister… it’s her Disc- err, Birthday today, and I’m trying to find the perfect gift for her.”
“I have seen you walk past many stands with trinkets that would interest any young girl.” The old man noted.
“Well, Hisako’s not just any girl.” Leo explained. “She’s had to fight every day of her life, and abhors everything girly because she thinks it makes her appear weak. Things like clothes, jewelry… she wouldn’t touch it with a 40 foot Bo staff.”
The old man gave a nod, smiling a bit as Leo’s analogy.
“So, she is a fighter.” He remarked. “Perhaps I can help you.”
The old man rose from his seat, moving deeper into his tent before taking an ornate, Chinese box from a table in the back. He returned to his seat, placing the box on the table before him before turning it towards Leo. The blue turtles leaned towards the box as the old man opened it, revealing its contents.
“I think this will prove to be a suitable gift for your sister.” The old man informed him.
Leo grinned, closing the box and picking it up.
“I’ll take it.” He declared.
Mikey, or Cowabunga Carl as the kids were chanting, stood in front of a ring tossing carnival game. Under his mascot head, Mikey had a determined look on his face, focusing on trying to win the grand prize. So far, he had succeeded in getting his rings on all but one of the bottles. Holding up his final ring, Mikey focused hard, then gave it a toss. The ring sailed through the air until it made contact with one of the bottles. It bounced a bit before finally settling on the bottle, sealing Mikey’s victory.
“Yeah!” Mikey cheered, punching the air. “Cowabunga Carl for the win!”
All of the little kids cheered as the carnie reached up to the top shelf of his prize display, pulling down the largest stuffed animal he had before handing it to Mikey. The orange turtle took his prize, giving his cheering fans a grand bow.
“A-thank you.” he told them all. “Thank you, you’re too kind.”
As he rose from his bow, his shell cell began to chirp, signaling an incoming text. He fished into his pocket, pulling out his phone to see he had a text from Leo.
“Got my gift. Headed back to the lair. - L”
Mikey’s face turned a lighter shade of green as he remembered the entire reason he was out at the street fair in the first place.
“Hisako’s gift!” he exclaimed. “Oh shell, I forgot!”
He began frantically patting his pockets, trying to see how much money he had left on hand. Unfortunately, he had spent it all on the games and was now 100% broke.
“Great.” He let out. “Now what am I-?”
He paused, then his eyes drifted down at the large prize he had just won. He picked it up, giving it an analytical glance as an idea began to form.
“I’ve got to work fast.” he declared, tucking the prize under his arm before vanishing into the crowd.
April and Raph stood in front of a vendor selling various pieces of jewelry, scanning the wares for viable gifts.
“How about this one?” April suggested, holding up a large, beaded necklace in various shades of green.
“You kidding? Hisako wouldn’t be caught dead wearing that.” Raph quipped.
April sighed, then set the necklace down, picking up a pair of earrings.
“What about these?” she tried.
“Hisako’s ears ain’t pierced.” Raph reminded her.
“She could get them pierced.” April argued.
“Yeah right.” Raph snorted. “Hisako with needles and antiseptics. Brilliant idea, April.”
“Hey, I’m trying to help you, hot head.” April snapped. “This is the fifth booth we’ve been to today, and you’ve turned down every gift I’ve suggested.”
“Well it's not like Hisako’s the easiest girl to shop for!” Raph replied.
“She’s your sister!” April reiterated. “You should know her better than anyone!”
“In case you forgot, she’s the psychic, not me!” Raph shouted.
April threw her hands up in defeat, letting out a growl.
“I swear, you are about as useful as a pencil with two erasers!” She told him.
“Hey I-”
Before Raph could begin his counterargument, he spotted a pair of familiar faces in the crowd. Falling back on years of instincts, Raph dove for cover, snagging April by the arm and pulling her behind the booth they had just been looking at. April went to say something, but Raph quickly slapped a hand over her mouth, silencing her.
“Hisako’s here.” he hissed. “Don’t move, and don’t think.”
April rolled her eyes, but didn’t fight Raph’s grip on her. Leaning against the fabric of the tent over the booth, Raph listened for Hisako and Miwa, waiting for them to pass.
“Okay, okay, which ride was your favorite?” Hisako questioned.
“Definitely the Swirling Vortex of Terror.” Miwa replied. “I felt like I was weightless as some points.”
“I know what you mean, though I have to say mine was the Thunderbolt.” Hisako declared. “That sudden drop made me feel like I was jumping across rooftops with the guys.”
“Respect.” Miwa allowed.
The two were about to pass Raph and April’s hiding place, but they paused before they did. For a split second, Raph was almost sure they’d been made, but then Miwa spoke up again, easing his fears.
“Hisako, check out some of these drawings.” Miwa called out, gesturing to a booth displaying several pieces of homemade art.
Hisako followed her sister’s gaze, a smile gracing her face.
“You want to see artwork, you should talk to Raph.” Hisako told her.
“Wait, Raph draws?” Miwa questioned.
“Yeah.” Hisako answered. “Master Splinter suggested he take up drawing as a way to express his anger in a ‘constructive’ manner. He hides his sketchbook, afraid we’d tease him about it, but honestly, I think he’s as good as his namesake.”
Raph found himself blushing a bit at the compliment. Hisako was right about his reasons for hiding his sketchbook, but it seemed that he really couldn’t keep secrets with a psychic in the family.
“Have you ever gotten a look at his sketchbook to be a judge of its contents?” Miwa wondered.
“Once.” Hisako explained. “When we were moving into the new lair. He has this beautiful drawing of all of us as a family. It was before you were part of it, but it was by far my favorite drawing in the book.”
“You are such a sap, sis.” Miwa poked playfully, ruffling Hisako’s hair.
The two girls shared a few giggles before disappearing into the crowd. Once she was out of sight, Raph released April and the two reemerged from their hiding spot.
“So, the hot head is an artist.” April quipped playfully, nudging Raph’s side. “I guess even tough guys have their soft spots.”
“I guess.” Raph agreed. “Though I think I just figured out my gift for Hisako.”
The sun had long since disappeared over the horizon by the time Miwa and Hisako began making their way back to the lair. They approached the door, still laughing and giggling about their shared experiences. The laughter died somewhat when they found all the lights in the lair had been shut off, plunging the entire area into a pitch blackness.
“Guys?” Miwa called out.
“Master Splinter?” Hisako shouted.
All of a sudden, the lights turned on as all four turtles, along with Casey and April, jumped out from behind the living room couch.
“Surprise!” they all shouted.
Donny hit a button, which released buckets of green confetti, showering the entire lair in a rain of green paper.
“Happy Discovery Day, Hisako.” Splinter declared, emerging from the kitchen with a large birthday cake, safely covered with a glass lid to protect it from the confetti.
Hisako covered her mouth in shock, looking around as Miwa slid over to Leo, giving him a confused look.
“Discovery day?” she questioned.
“Hisako’s birthday for all intents and purposes.” he quickly supplied.
Hisako looked close to crying happy tears as she ran to her family, hugging them all tightly.
“I can’t believe you guys did this!” she said, a huge grin on her face as she wiped her eyes. “Miwa, did you-?”
“I had nothing to do with this.” she replied.
“We saw the opportunity and took it.” Donny informed her. “So, were you surprised?”
“Oh was I.” Hisako replied.
Mikey immediately grabbed Hisako by the arm, dragging her over to the couch, where four presents of varying sizes and colors sat waiting for her.
“That sure is a lot of presents.” Mikey noted, grabbing one off the table. “Why don’t you open this one first?”
He flashed her a wink, signifying it was his. Of course, she could tell it was his due to the bright orange wrapping paper, but she didn’t tell him that. She eagerly tore through the paper, revealing a large, stuffed turtle inside. It was easily half Hisako’s size, wearing a black mask that had been tied around its eyes, a black belt around its shell, and it even had a cardboard mace tied to its hand.
“Hisako, meet Slash!” Mikey declared.
Hisako broke out into a grin, holding him up to the others.
“Look guys, another ninja turtle!” she proclaimed.
The others let out a chuckle in response.
“Nice one Mikey.” Leo told him.
“Yep.” Mikey declared, striking a triumphant pose. “I was gonna name it Spike, but that was Raph’s imaginary friend back when we were five.”
Raph responded by tossing his ball cap at him, the brim connecting with Mikey’s forehead.
“So who wants to go next?” Mikey asked, rubbing his smarting forehead.
“I’ll go.” Donny volunteered.
He picked up a package wrapping in purple paper, placing it on Hisako’s lap. Once again, she tore away at the paper, revealing a large, metal turtle shell. It was spray painted to resemble an actual turtle shell, decorated with a few New York bumper stickers here and there. Hisako picked it up surprised by how light it was despite being made entirely out of metal.
“What is it, Don?” she asked.
“That is your new turtle shell backpack.” Donny answered, taking it from her and placing it against her back.
Once the back of the backpack touched her skin, a pair of straps shot out of it, bisecting Hisako’s chest before connecting on the lower part of the backpack. Hisako gave an experimental stretch, surprised to find that she still had full mobility.
“The backpack itself is made out of Utromidium, a metal compound native to the Utrom home world.” Donny explained. “It’s incredibly lightweight and extremely durable. No punk with a blade is gonna shred this pack.”
“Nifty.” Mikey commented. “But aren’t backpacks supposed to be able to hold stuff?”
Donny pressed a small section at the top of the backpack, which opened up to reveal the interior of the shell.
“Yes.” Donny replied with no small amount of smugness. “Yes it is.”
Hisako threw her arms around Donny, giving him a hug.
“I love it Don, thank you.” she told him. “I’ve been wanting a new backpack for a while now.”
“Okay, my turn.” Leo decided, reaching for the small wooden box the old man had given him. “Mine’s not wrapped, but I just couldn’t bring myself to cover the box in paper.”
Hisako took the box, running her fingers over the cover before slowly lifting the lid. Inside the box was a pair of thin, black chopsticks with wooden dragons on the top. Hisako gasped, then gently pulled them out.
“Leo, these… these are beautiful.” she whispered.
“You haven’t seen the best part.” Leo told her.
He reached for one, taking hold of the dragon and gently tugging it. The dragon pulled away from the black chopstick, unveiling a thin metal dagger.
“The chop sticks go in your hair, and they double as a hidden weapon.” he explained, sliding the blade back into place.
Hisako took the chopsticks, sliding then back into the box before hugging Leo tightly.
“They’re amazing Leo.” she told him. “Thank you so much.”
“Hey Raph, your turn!” Casey declared. “Where’s your gift?”
“I... Uh…” Raph started to reply.
April grabbed Raph’s present off of the table. It was wrapped in newspaper held together with duct tape, and almost immediately, Raph tried to take it back. Unfortunately, he didn’t move fast enough, and Hisako had it in her hands before he could stop it. The newspaper quickly joined the purple and orange wrapping paper on the ground as a picture frame was revealed. Nestled in the picture frame was a hand drawn family portrait of the entire Hamato Clan, including Miwa. In the corner of the picture was a small message from Raph.
“To my sister, I’m glad you’re part of this family.”
Hisako covered her mouth once again, tears returning to her eyes as she looked over at Raph.
“Did- Did you draw this?” she asked.
“Yeah.” He confirmed. “Not as cool as a stuffed turtle or a metal backpack but-”
Hisako tackled Raph in a hug, holding him tighter than she’d ever held him before.
“It’s the best present I could have ever asked for.” she told him, her happy tears staining his shirt. “Thank you Raphael.”
For a moment, the red turtle was stunned, then he slowly wrapped his arms around her. A smile graced his face as his eyes closed.
“Happy Discovery Day, sis.” he replied.
“Okay, enough sappy stuff!” Casey suddenly called out. “Let’s eat some cake!”
Everyone let out a laugh as Hisako released her brother, even if she kept her arm around him. Together, the two joined their friends and family around the kitchen table for cake and pizza. As they all ate, chatted and laughed, Hisako could feel their combined happiness and contentment filling her.
“Best. Discovery Day. Ever.” she declared.
Excerpt
Eleven years earlier…
I pull the lever of the cage, switching the tunnel onto a different track, trying to confuse the mice.
I know exactly how the future will play out, of course. I know which mice will fall down the trap and which ones will smack into the see-through glass wall. I know which mice will get hopelessly lost. I even know which ones will run the maze correctly on the very first try.
I like watching them anyway. They wriggle over one another like worms, and their whiskers twitch when they’re at a corner between two paths. But what I like most is how they come to me when I call.
Picking up a mouse, I run my fingers over its soft fur and warm body. It looks at me with unblinking pink eyes, and I think it could be my friend.
Of course, I can see which mice will come, so I know which ones to call. Rodents are predictable like that. Humans, not so much. They have too many wants, too many feelings. I don’t see any one future for people. Rather, I see them all—every single pathway their futures might take, flickering before my eyes.
So I have to guess which of my human classmates will want to play with me. Most of the time, I guess wrong.
“Are you bothering my mice again?” a little boy’s voice says. “Fates, Livvy. How many times do I have to tell you? Leave them alone!”
Startled, I let go of the mouse and look up at Tanner Callahan, the other six-year-old who hangs around the scientists’ labs. I’m here because my mom’s the head of the Future Memory Agency, or FuMA, and he’s here…I guess ’cause he has nowhere else to be.
He’s got black hair that pokes up in the back, and his skin sticks too closely to his bones. I thought this meant he wasn’t eating enough, but MK, our child-minder, said that grief over his parents’ deaths had burrowed holes through his resources.
This makes me think of the mice digging through the straw, and my chest aches. I flash forward to his futures. He still has hundreds of branches remaining, but in most of them, one thing is the same: he will be sad and lonely until he kisses our classmate Jessa ten years in the future.
I don’t know why kissing should change anything. But I do know how it feels to be lonely and sad.
We don’t have to be like this. I could be his friend. I just have to figure out the right thing to say.
“Jessa and I are going to rule the world one day.” It can’t hurt to bring up the girl he smushes lips with. Maybe if he thinks she and I are friends, he’ll like me, too. “You know Jessa, right? The girl with the teardrop eyes? She’s my best friend.” Not true. I think Jessa only talks to me because she’s nice. But he doesn’t have to know that.
“Oh yeah? Well someday, I’m going to be the inventor of future memory,” he shoots back. “And then we’ll see who’s more important.”
I bite my lip. That wasn’t what I meant. I wasn’t trying to brag or compare or compete. The futures containing our friendship begin to fall away, one by one. I guessed wrong once again.
Guest post
Pintip Dunn Interviews Ryder Russell, the Hero of Her Latest Release, SEIZE TODAY Pintip: Hi everyone! I have a special treat for you today! I’ve pried Ryder from the figments of my imagination, and he’s sitting before me now for an interview. Say hi to everyone, Ryder!
Ryder: Hi to everyone, Ryder! Pintip: Cute. Very cute. But then, you’ve been giving me trouble since the moment you sprang into my consciousness. Now, I can see you, but our readers can’t, so could you start by describing your physical appearance?
Ryder: Uh… I have dark brown skin and eyes and closely shaven hair. I’m really tall — 6’3” — and I do a lot of manual labor living out in the woods, so I have a lot of muscles.
Pintip: Oooohhh, tell us more about those muscles.
Ryder: *narrows eyes* Are you hitting on me?
Pintip: *sputters* Fates no! Why would you say that? You’re, like, half my age! Less than half!
Ryder: Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because when you wrote me, you were inspired by Lincoln from The 100, and you have a total crush on him.
Pintip: *blushing furiously* I do not! Don’t forget, I can see all of your thoughts, not the other way around!
Ryder: Yeah, but you kept rewinding that scene at the beginning of Season 3, when —
Pintip: Moving on! *lowers voice to whisper* I’m the author here. I can make your life a living limbo. So behave. *in normal tone* Where do you call home?
Ryder: Right now? The wilderness. I lived in Eden City, the capitol of North Amerie, until I was six. I came back when I was twelve, for about four years, before I was forced to go on the run with my family again. *pauses* Was that suitably on topic?
Pintip: Very. Do you have a special skill?
Ryder: Oh, sure. Lots. I’ve never met a machine I couldn’t take apart and put back together, and my skills on the hover board make pretty boys like Tanner Callahan weep.
Pintip: Hey, don’t make fun of Tanner!
Ryder: *jumps out of seat* I knew it! I knew Tanner was your favorite hero!
Pintip: *tugs him back down* Oh, relax. You’re all my favorite, and you know it. I tell you so all that time.
Ryder: Does that line actually work on your children?
Pintip: It totally does. Because it’s TRUE. What is your biggest dream/wish/desire?
Ryder: To make it to tomorrow and see the sun rise.
Pintip: Geez, Ryder, don’t be so morbid. You’re going to scare everyone away!
Ryder: I guess living in the wilderness has a way of boiling down your desires to the basics. There are so many things that could go wrong out here — we could run out of food or succumb to infection or get mauled by a wild animal.
Pintip: *softens* Tell them what you really want.
Ryder: You promised you wouldn’t ask me that question.
Pintip: *gives him hard stare* I’m the author. I make you do things you don’t want all the time.
Ryder: I . . . I’d like to be first in someone’s life. To have someone love me the most, to place me highest on their list of priorities. You see, I’ve never had that before. My biological parents…well, I don’t like to talk about them unless it’s absolutely necessary
You know, I’ve never admitted this to anyone but Olivia before. She feels the same way, too, and sometimes, when I catch that same yearning on her face, my heart gives this unsteady bump and I have this completely wild thought that maybe . . . just maybe . . . we could fulfill that role for each other.
Pintip: You could be right.
Ryder: *looks up with hope in his eyes* Really? You’re not just saying that?
Pintip: Maybe. Keep answering my questions, and I’ll see what I can do. Let’s talk about your parents.
Ryder: NO!
Pintip: *chants* Olivia! Olivia! Olivia!
Ryder: Okay, FINE. When I was six, I came to Harmony, the community in the wilderness where psychics and their families went to escape persecution. Everyone thought I was there because my parents had been arrested. They were wrong.
You see, my brother Damien has the ability to read minds with a single touch. Back then, ComA was locking up psychics like lab rats, in order to study them, and my parents were terrified they were going to find out about Damien.
So, they decided to change their identities and hide out in a small town, far away from the nation’s capitol. They knew ComA would be looking for a family with two boys, so the best way to throw them off track was to turn into a family of three. Two parents. One boy. The older, favored one in particular.
They abandoned me. Without a second thought, they left me, even though I begged and pleaded to go with them. That’s how I knew that they didn’t love me – and maybe they never did.
Pintip: *gently* It’s okay, Ryder. Other people love you now. Mikey, Angela. Jessa. In time, Olivia. And me. I love you.
Ryder: Ha! I knew you were hitting on me!
Pintip: Oh, for Fates’ sake. I think it’s time we bring this interview to a close. Say good-bye to our friends, Ryder!
Ryder: Good-bye to our friends, Ryder!
Pintip: *rolls eyes* There you have it, everyone. Ryder Russell, in the flesh. Never a dull moment with him, that’s for sure!
I'm going through the word document I share with @remmushound that contains our Rise/Bay crossover fic. I found this scene between Rise Leo and Bay Mikey winking to Kevin Eastman funny:
-
“Awwww. It’s like us with Dominos pizza. Except we did it every week.”
“So that’s why you had pizza box Furniture!”
“Exactly! Those boxes hold up really well.”
“Hm. We had pizza week! Except now it’s only one day every week and we go get pizza from all our favorite pizza places and feast on it throughout the week. By now They must think we’re some sort of pizza cryptids that emerge every Week to feast.”
“Oooh, pizza cryptids. I like it!”
“We must be regular because they have our orders ready every week before we even call!”
“That makes sense. Kevin doesn’t even look around, he just holds out the boxes for us.”
“Do you think he knows about this whole…” Leonardo motioned vaguely to Mikey. “Situation.”
A slow, wise smile drifted across Mikey’s face. “I think he does. I like to think he’s cool with it and it makes him smile to himself at night.”
“Awww that’s sweet! I hope he doesn’t miss you too much when you’re over in our world.”
“Leo says it feels weird to think about.”
“I don’t think it’s weird.”
“Me, neither. But I wanna hang around humans. Leo and Raph are still skeptical. Donnie thinks we would put ourselves in danger.”
“Just gotta pick your humans carefully!”
“That’s what I kept saying! Kevin wouldn’t ever hurt us.”
“I think we had a Kevin. He’s a fish now.”
Thirty year old headcanon no matter what any canon tries to tell us: Mikey enjoys science experiments, is delighted when Donnie asks for his help, and often experiments with his art, media, and culture interests using the scientific method. Although it is in fact canon in various incarnations, the fandom has always had this annoying habit of claiming that Mikey is too dumb. Stop that, fandom.
