National Vitamin C Day
It’s good for your immune system, it’s good for your mental health, it’s even good for your skin. Don’t neglect this crucial vitamin on Vitamin C Day.
Vitamin C. We all hear about it, how good it is for us, how it will help us fight off that cold. But how much do we really know about this mystery substance, and just how much can it do to help our bodies? Take advantage of Vitamin C day to learn something new and boost your health, to boot!
Learn about National Vitamin C Day
National Vitamin C Day has been created so that we can appreciate and learn all about the different ways that vitamin C can benefit our health. Vitamin C is also referred to as ascorbate and ascorbic acid. It is found in a number of different foods, as well as being sold as a dietary supplement. It is an essential nutrient in terms of producing a number of neurotransmitters and repairing tissues. It was discovered back in 1912. Sixteen years later, it was isolated. Then, in 1933, it became the first vitamin to be produced chemically.
Vitamin C is widely recognized for helping to keep colds at bay. However, there are plenty of other benefits that are associated with this powerful vitamin! You could reduce your blood pressure by upping your vitamin C uptake, for example. Vitamin C is also beneficial in terms of helping to keep your skin healthy. This is because it protects it from the oxidative damage that is caused as a result of exposure on a daily basis to pollution, heat, and light. This has seen the population of vitamin C products increase considerably.
There are plenty of natural ways to add some more vitamin C to your diet. You don’t need to opt for vitamin C supplements, although many people do. Some of the fruits that have the highest sources of vitamin C include cantaloupe melon, citrus juices and fruits, kiwi fruit, pineapple, papaya, mango, and the various berries, such as cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. There are a number of vegetables that are rich in vitamin C as well, including cauliflower and broccoli.
The History of National Vitamin C Day
As a substance occurring naturally in countless different fruits and vegetables, vitamin C has likely been around as long as the earth itself. Peoples from all over the world have long been aware of the extensive health benefits of consuming foods high in vitamin C as well as the risks associated with not consuming enough of it, one of which is scurvy. It was not until the late 19th century that scurvy was described in detail by British physician Sir Thomas Barlow, that people began to understand just how much this substance can do for our health.
However, scurvy was known for thousands of years prior, with even the great Hippocrates himself writing about it. In the 18th century, it is assumed that the disease killed more British sailors than any enemies they had and was one of the greatest factors limiting maritime travel over the ages. Today, very few people suffer from scurvy and Vitamin C is considered on of the most important nutrients food can and should provide.
How to celebrate National Vitamin C Day
The best way to celebrate National Vitamin C Day is to stay healthy, and this very vitamin can help you with that! Vitamin C is necessary for good health and general well-being, but the unfortunate truth is that not everyone has the time to pay close attention to what they eat and just how many grams or milligrams of a certain substance they consume daily.
The drastic rise in popularity of microwavable dishes has caused people’s diets to become much less healthy over the recent years, as has the fact that many people are working longer hours than ever and don’t have the time or the energy to cook themselves and their families a well-balanced meal every day.
Luckily, there are a few ways to make sure you’re getting enough Vitamin C, no matter your lifestyle. One is to simply squeeze lemon juice into the water you drink. Half a lemon contains almost 100% of your daily vitamin C requirement, so just a squeeze here and there will be more than enough!
The same goes for—alcoholic drinks. If you’re going to have a few Mojitos this Friday anyway, why not use fresh lime juice? And have we mentioned Vitamin C helps prevent hangovers as well?
But it doesn’t stop there—as it tuns out, you can put lemon juice into pretty much everything for your daily dose of Vitamin C as well as a deliciously tangy zing. As opposed to some other “healthy” foods which, let’s face it, can be downright nasty (looking at you, kale!), lemon juice makes almost everything you put it on and in taste better.
Salad dressings. Grilled meats. The list goes on. And if for whatever reason you’re not a fan of lemons, don’t worry! Many fruits and vegetables contain enough Vitamin C to keep you healthy, including tomatoes, strawberries, spinach, peppers, and many more. Take advantage of National Vitamin C Day to do your body a favor!
Vitamin C cannot only be consumed, but it can be applied to your skin as well. As mentioned earlier, Vitamin C is great for skin health. Why not make your own Vitamin C serum? It is not as difficult as you may think! All you need is some aloe vera gel, filtered water, and vitamin C powder. You may decide to add some other vitamins as well, such as vitamin E oil. There are some variations of how to make vitamin C serums and facemasks online, but the ingredient list is a simple one, yet the benefits are vast!
Of course, you can also buy some vitamin C skin products, rather than making your own. If you are going to use a vitamin C serum, whether homemade or not, we recommend washing your face first and using a toner. You can then apply a small amount of the serum. The serum is probably going to be quite thick. Do this before you go to bed, and add another layer of moisturizer. In the morning, you should wash your face thoroughly before any makeup is applied. Because of sun exposure, vitamin C serum is not designed to be used on a daily basis.
Make sure you spread the word about National Vitamin C Day and the benefits associated with this nutrient so that you can help others experience the benefits of it!

A rant on stupid people's ideas about poverty:
We as a society really need to stop shaming people on benefits. "B-but people on benefits are going out and buying steak, and they have a nice phone and things!" Since you probably don't even know how benefits work beyond "people are getting free food that I'm paying for" (along with all kinds of other things) here's the 2019 benefit amount state averages, courtesy of the USDA. The national average is $239 a month for two people btw. Just let that sink in a little.
But let's talk about that steak, because that's what's important, right? On Walmart's site, cheapest price I can find for a pair of steaks is $17.97. 10 lb bag of russet potatoes is $5.97, that's the best price per unit. And you can stretch that for another meal or two. $2.74 for a 32-oz thing of frozen broccoli. Two medium russet potatoes are about a pound. So you're looking at $24 for this one meal. So what if someone on benefits can get themselves a nice steak dinner? We're all having to try to streach the rest of our meals across the week. You're lucky if you can get together a balanced meal, because the rest of them are going to be unbalanced. And only getting one, maybe two filling meals a day, if that. If there's a food pantry, that'll usually help a bit, depending on where you live and whatnot.
But when you're poor, you do your damndest to not look like it. You sit and rationalize everything that you do with your money. It's not easy to stay within your means, even if you keep an eye out for things like plasma donations, things that people who have money seem to consider beneath them or not worth the hassle. You might try to tuck money away in case of an emergency, but it's rarely enough. The rise of people turning to strangers online isn't a sign of "everybody's looking for a handout these days." It's a cry for help because they're out of options. The system is antiquidated and broken, and yet rather than making something better for everyone, you feel you deserve everything since you've made yourself a diligent bootlicker for a company for 20 years. It doesn't matter if we have nothing because you think "that'll never be me, because I have a plan for my life."
About that iPhone, or whatever nice thing someone who's poor might have. When you need something, it's a fact that you get what you pay for. Case in point, I bought what has to be the 100th crappy $30 keyboard and mouse combo, and started to save up my money, because I was tired of having them die left and right for well over a decade. So when the craptastic one predictably died a few months later, I bought myself a mechanical keyboard. I thought for a while about what I needed. It'll hopefully be the last keyboard I'll ever have to get. And yet, I beat myself up over it long after the money is gone, just because I have it. I haven't set up my macros because I couldn't figure out the web based configurator that even @dragongirlcock struggled with. ADHD plus memory loss means that I'm doing it with zero experience in coding in general, nvm QMK. And yet, the part of my brain that comes from a lifetime of poverty says to me, "Why did you even get this? It's so expensive! You're not using all the features right now. If you're not using it for every single thing that it's good for, then you're not really appreciating it. If you hadn't done this, then you'd have money for this other thing. You should be 'practical' (aka only spending money on adulting related things) "
All of this, all of these messages that are passed from society to poor people, who teach it to their kids, who often also are in poverty and with people becoming poorer all the time, we need to stop perpetuating the message that you only deserve nice things if you're middle class. Everyone deserves nice things that they enjoy.

'We are not immune to it': Expert advice on diabetes prevention as cases rise
After a new global study finds cases of diabetes are on the rise, the head of a national advocacy organization is reminding Canadians this country is “not immune” to that increase.
Researchers behind a study published Thursday in The Lancet expect cases around the world to almost triple by 2050, reaching a peak 1.3 billion.
“And here in Canada, we have been noticing that uptick very much,” says Laura Syron, president and CEO of Diabetes Canada. “We are not immune to it at all.”
The study found Type 2 diabetes makes up 96 per cent of all cases. In Canada, nearly 12 million people have either diabetes or pre-diabetes.
Syron herself was diagnosed with Type 2 seven years ago, when she was 50 years old.
“When I got my diagnosis, you could have knocked me over with a feather,” she says. “It was just at a regular annual check-up.”
“And I didn’t know what to do with that, and that’s one thing I will say, is that folks need help to understand what (the disease) is,” she adds.
“Diabetes is progressive,” says N.S. Health endocrinologist Dr. Tom Ransom. “Someone can be doing all of the right things and it just slowly gets worse, and they have to understand that it’s not their fault.”
Type 2 diabetes happens when the pancreas fails produce the insulin a body needs to function. As a result, a body’s cells can then respond poorly to what insulin is produced, making the body insulin resistant.
In certain cases, Dr. Ransom says Type 2 diabetes can be managed with healthy eating and exercise, but others also require medication or insulin.
Experts say healthy habits are especially important to combat the increase in reported cases of Type 2 diabetes among youth.
“Everyone should be eating a healthy diet and being as active as you can be,” says Dr. Ransom. “And then of course, have your regular screening with your family doctor to maybe detect it in its early stages and intervene if possible.”
“Unfortunately, it’s quite common that people can go years without knowing they have diabetes,” he adds. “It’s one of things you might not feel…when it’s more advanced, people get more symptomatic, a lot of drinking, going to the bathroom a lot, those are some early signs.”
“Obesity (is a) key risk factor,” says registered dietitian Angela Dufour. “We know that 60 per cent of adult Canadians and one-third of children under the age of 17 are overweight and obese.”
Her top tips for maintaining healthy blood glucose levels include limiting sugar intake while increasing fiber.
“We need have less than 10 per cent of our total energy coming from free sugars, that’s approximately 50 grams, or about 12 teaspoons,” she says.
“Health Canada recommends 30 to 50 grams of dietary fiber coming from mixed sources,” she explains. “That’s soluble and insoluble fiber.”
“Soluble can be found in oat bran, barley, nuts,” she continues. “Whereas insoluble fiber includes more of those whole grains, lots of our vegetable sources, brussels sprouts, broccoli, artichokes, wheat bran, so a mix of both of those types of fiber have been shown to improve that glycemic index.”
According to Diabetes Canada, it currently costs $50 million in health care a day to treat diabetes, a disease which can also lead to complications such kidney disease, eye damage, heart disease and stroke.

The ATLA AU No Asked For
the ATLA AU no asked for (with angst!) by Made of stars
Todoroki Shouto despises the throne, the throne he will one day inherit. Everything the Fire Lord- his father- has claimed is the essence of their nation is a lie.
Midoriya Izuku is a Fire Nation boy, at least half of him is. His mother is Air Nation, and after being casted out of the Fire Nation, the same one that claimed to be accepting and tolerant of other nations, Izuku learns that the world needs a shift in world view.
Bakugou Katsuki couldn't give two shits about other nations, the Fire Nation was the best of them all, he was the best of them all. Too bad he has to leave it behind because the asshole crown prince decides to have his angst session and first act of rebellion right when Bakugou is set to rise in the military ranks.
Uraraka Ochako is a Water Tribe peasant and she is determined to live out her days in peace, separate from all the bullshit lies that every nation preaches but doesn't believe. Too bad she can't leave a certain broccoli boy to travel the world by himself.

Hi ABL! Can I be what I'm assuming is the 80th person to ask for your analysis about the move of Prem and Boun to GMMTV? Particularly, any thoughts on:
Why did the move happen and does it mean anything that they moved together?
What might this mean for new series with them as a pair and the potential to break up their pairing?
Are there any GMMTV talents that you'd love to see Boun or Prem paired with?
Thanks in advance for any insights!
BounPrem move to GMMTV
DISCUSS!
AKA Thai BL industry speculation, my favorite game!!
Tumblr media
I am actually cautiously optimistic about this.
They're an ideal pair for GMMTV to get. Especially if GMMTV continues optioning Japanese IP. These two are beautifully suited to A LOT of yaoi. Just imagine them in a Thai version of Takumi-kun? !
Tumblr media
Rise up Broccoli Nation... let's talk kabedons!
Why did the move happened?
From BounPrem's perspective:
I think they've been pretty underserved by their current home and that home is pushing them towards pulps (I refuse to talk about Even Sun and I found Between Us pretty darn disappointing too.) If they want higher quality narratives and content, GMMTV is a better home for them.
Tumblr media
Also it will handle their brand better for sponsorship and longevity. I was shocked not to see them on more stuff in Bangkok. Most sponsor gigs and major promos and billboards and such were GMMTV pairs and... ZeeNunew
Right now there are good indication for pairs who WANT to stick together (even while aging up) that GMMTV can handle it - because of what they've done with OffGun and TayNew recently.
Tumblr media
It's clear that GMMTV will throw a good pair at decent content (or at least popular stuff) pretty regularly. With GMMTV, BounPrem stand an even better chance at landing a prestige piece, since they have an established fan base.
From the pair's perspective, this is a good career move.
Now, from GMMTV's perspective, let's talk...
Does it mean anything that they moved together?
Yes, it most likely means GMMTV signed them as a BL pair. Some of GMMTV's other hot properties like EarttMix, OffGun, and TayNew clearly want to do (and have done) more than just BL for GMMTV. Even "second levels" like JimmySea are being split for het dramas. It means they lose their BL talent for a good potion of filming season, while they film some other property.
If GMMTV can sign a high value pair that's happy to stay doing BL regularly, that will work very well for them.
ALSO they've add a hot property pair into their stable that's on the EarthMix (highly commercial) level AND willing to do high heat. I think this is key. GMMTV has shown they want to move into sexier stuff (NC-GMMTV?) with things like Moonlight Chicken and Only Friends. VERY few of their existing pairs are willing to go there, and can do it as well as, BounPrem. These 2 do lust and thirst in a way that most GMMTV pairs can't (they are just too brotherly with each other).
I think this is a sign GMMTV want's to enter the after dark market, and move international markets too. (The higher heat stuff tends to be particularly popular outside of Thailand.)
Also, I think it's pretty clear some of GMMTV's hoped for heavy hitters last year (like PerthChimon) aren't working out for them, so it makes sense to onboard a solid bankable pair whole cloth at this juncture.
Tumblr media
I said a while ago I thought GMMTV would make a play for ZeeNunew. I didn't have BounPrem on the list as a backup option, but these pairs are kinda similar, and fill the same niche.
Anyway, smart move all 'round, IMHO.
Tumblr media
What might this mean for new series with them as a pair and the potential to break up their pairing?
I think the pairing is now less likely to break up than ever.
I think they've possibly been tempted to sign BY a prestige new series carrot. We could get something historical with them in it. Or, like I said, something Japanese IP. Probably higher heat than GMMTV has given us in a full BL.
Eyes Target the Finder thoughtfully. (It was VERY popular when I was over there.)
Tumblr media
Are there any GMMTV talents that you'd love to see Boun or Prem paired with?
Like I said, I think GMMTV's objective in signing them would actually be the opposite - NOT to split the pair.
Tumblr media
But if you just want me to speculate for fun (and piss stadn off), I'm always happy to do so.
First is great with anyone, so First with either... or both. First is like the MSG of GMMTV, always improves the taste of any dish.
It might be fun to see Jimmy paired with Prem. But in all honestly I really want a Jimmy + Khaotung thing to happen.
I think Mix has some BDE too, so I think he should play the seme for a change, why not him and Prem?
As for Boun, I think he's a little more dependent on the pairing. It's hard for me to imagine him with someone else. Lemme think. Someone with a very soft screen presence, maybe? How about Gun?
Tumblr media
Heh he, now I'm just winding ya'll up.
Let me have my foibles.

🎬 About Me
Tumblr media
Original art of me and my fictional hubby, Ukai Keishin, by @achieve-the-sun, posted with permission. 💕
Hi there!
My name is Nin and I am the founder of Crushzone Cinema Theater. 📽 🍿
🎬 THE BASICS
Age: 23
Birthday: December 24th
Pronoun: She/her
Education: Graduated with a dual degree in Film and Global History
Occupation: Is currently a film freelancer in the camera department, who desperately needs money to pay rent every month lol.
Likes:
- The sound of rain tapping on my window
- Watching my plants rise and droop to the moving sun
- Cooking and experimenting with different cuisines; Japanese, Thai and Chinese are some of my favorites.
- Giving my husband and my cat their head rubs every night.
- Drawing, painting, and photography. (Here’s some of my works!)
- The feeling of accomplishment after you’ve gone through SO much for a project with your peers. To work on your own movie or short film, and finally seeing it done, is such a rewarding experience.
- To eat my Mac and Cheese with ketchup, nutritional yeast, and steamed broccoli. (Fight me lol. 🦖 )
- Eating chips with chopsticks.
- Medjool dates with a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter 😋
-Wearing oversized clothes, especially hoodies.
- Sitting at my reading nook, with my cat next to me on the chair.
Tumblr media
Dislikes:
- The buzzing sound bees make when they fly.
- Slipping on my own chunk of hair on the ground; I have a lot of hair and I shed a lot.
- The heat, I may be from Thailand, but I am very much done with the blaring heat. One second I’ll look real cute with my face all done up, but the moment I step out, it’s already melting from my face.
- Going to sleep; there’s SO much more I could be doing right now!
- When my bangs desperately need a trim and is poking my eyes.
- Poor lighting, doesn’t matter if it is real life, just light it like you’re IN a film!! It’s so much more dramatic that way! (For real, come to my house, every corner is lit with some sort of a look/mood 😏)
- Loud noises; when people are yelling all the time, or something is loud, I get nervous when I can’t hear my own thoughts.
- People with bad attitude, a temper, or is just kind of mean in general. There is absolutely no excuse for you to be that way, and nothing productive comes out of it. Nuh-uh.
🎬 FUN FACTS
My parents hired a piano teacher when I was in elementary school, but because I didn’t enjoy her company (for some reason), I refused to absorb information. Little did I know, it would backfire me and would have absolutely no effect to her pay.
I’m that kid who always has 4 spare pencils and 5 erasers to lend out to my peers.
Will serenade to my cat every morning and night, so if you are ever my roommate, I apologize for my horrible singings.
Performed as a cave and pot in my high school production, and lemme tell ya, it is more difficult than it sounds.
Has no problem doing laundry in the morning, but the moment the sun falls, I will be too afraid to go down into my basement to do it. Some may say that it is an excuse for me to put laundry off for the next day, but I always tell my husband that there’s a “Babadook” in there. 👀
One time I stepped on a millipede, and I cried for 2 days because I felt really bad for it.
I’m actually VERY shy most of the times, so if you see me laughing a lot like a hyena, then it’s likely that it’s just me being awkward. OR I may just be having a good time, who knows.
I’m awful around kids, I am SO awkward and will stiff up like a rock (if you see me doing that, pls come safe me). One time this kid asked me why I laugh so much, so I simply just laughed some more while backing out of the room slowly. 🤦‍♀️
🎬 SOME FUN QUESTIONS!
What is something you wish you were gifted at doing?
I wish I could sing. My husband is a musician, and it looks like he’s having so much fun. There’s just something so freeing about it, as if it’s another language that takes time to become fluent in, but when you are, it’s so captivating and expressive. I don’t think I’m an awful singer, but is just too incredibly shy to sing in front of others.
What is the first movie you remember seeing in theater?
It may had been Disney’s Dinosaur (2000), not sure. All I remember was that there were a bunch of dinosaurs on screen, may had even been 3D with those glasses.
At one point, a tiger jumped at the screen, and I started crying. My mom and brother wanted to finish the movie, so my dad had to sit outside with me, until it was over. It was chill tho, my dad was teaching me different dinosaur names. 👶 🦖 🦕
What is the first thing you do when you get home?
Pants off, baby!! I don’t usually wear a bra, but if do, then I guess it’s bra’s off first. Then I instantly hop into my plaid boxer shorts hehee. 🤭
What has been the hardest thing for you to face or learn?
That people go through different stages of their life at different paces, and that is totally okay. When I was younger, I would always overwork, and as a result, I don’t really have a lot of time for myself. I did that, mostly, because I wanted to get a head start at everything, especially at my career. Now that I am 23-24, and had just graduated from Class of 2019, I’ve been getting film gigs since I was a sophomore, and is now a full time freelancer.
Yet, I was not satisfied, because I got to work with a 21 y/o in a position that was under her, and it made me feel momentarily incompetent; like I wasn’t doing well enough. But it will never be enough if that’s the mindset; I never considered that she skipped university and went straight into film, so circumstances were entirely different.
Meanwhile, there’s someone 10+ years older than me who is struggling to get the work I’d get, and that is okay too. What I should’ve done is feel happy for her, and use that to motivate myself to improve.  As long as I never give up, and continue to do my best with a good attitude, everything will be just fine.
If you could give your younger self any advice what would it be?
That it’s okay to take a break sometimes, live life a little, and cherish all the happiness, sadness, heartbreak, and struggles that you are going through right now. Every tear will make you stronger, and genuine every smile will eventually pull you through.
Time goes by very quickly, and every stage in your life is a part of you, so make sure you remember how you get to where you are well.
Do you see the glass as half empty or half full?
Half full, just grateful that there’s any liquid in the glass at all, and is excited to acquire more with all the space I’ve got on top, ya know? 🤷‍♀️
What is the strangest thing you believed as a child?
That if you whistle at night, the ghosts will come find you. Or if you play hide and seek at night, then you’ve opened up some kind of portal that the ghosts will kidnap you away from this dimension forever.
Tbh, I think my grandma was just sick of me trying to learn how to whistle when I was in elementary school and of me running around the house at night, so she made these omen up lol.
What time do you usually get up in the morning?
Used to wake up at 13:00-14:00 all the time, but since I married an early bird, I’ve been up at 6:30-7:00 lately.
What time is your usual bed time?
Heeheee 1:00-2:00 in the morning, oops.
How has your birth order/characteristics of siblings affected you?
I have the loveliest older brother in the world, he’s 4 years older, and is very smart, diligent, athletic, and funny. Me being the only daughter, my parents are incredibly protective, so they’d always have my brother do everything for me.
It was a relief when I was younger, but as I enter high school, it became a little frustrating; I felt like I was living under his shadows and can never be considered independent. They’d also spend a lot more time training with him cuz he’s a national competitive swimmer.
Because of that, I had a lot of time to myself, so I experimented with my own interests and grew in my own way. As I’ve grown, I can definitely say that it’s made me a lot more independent and introverted haha. I absolutely dislike depending on anyone (Will be my last resort), but it’s also nice to know that whenever either of us fall, we’ll always have each other’s back.

💜💜💜 evelian 💜💜💜
- name: violet evans - likes / dislikes: likes making people smile, music, crossword puzzles, cooking, comedy, magic (even though other people call it lame), and performing. dislikes makeup, people who take themselves too seriously, eating fish, math, and sports. - first word: dada - appearance: always laughing, usually fresh faced, wears lots of bright colors. loves wearing her hair in braids. she has about a million fun dresses and accessories and there's never a dull moment in her closet. - which parent they look more like: eve, but she has julian's brown eyes! - which parent they like more: both!!! though julian will argue it's him by a hair because of her first word. this is obviously inaccurate, but it makes julian feel better. - height once fully grown: 5'4" - closer to eve than juli - job ambition: some sort of performer - either an actress or a comedian, but not a dancer. surprisingly, even with two dancer parents, violet somehow has little to no rhythm. her parents are convinced that it's all just a very long, drawn out, elaborate ruse. - faceclaim: lucy hale
💙💙💙 aidarah 💙💙💙
- name: sky richards - likes / dislikes: likes photography, the outdoors, anything athletic, baking, trivia, traveling, dad jokes, animals, and reading. dislikes socializing with people who aren't close friends, losing, broccoli, and having to be patient. - first word: mommy - appearance: very low key, usually in jeans and a t-shirt, but she knows how to clean up nicely when needed bc she wouldn't be sarah's daughter otherwise. loves painting her nails different colors. - which parent they look more like: sarah, with aiden's crooked smile! - which parent they like more: both for different reasons. sarah understands her natural drive, curiosity, and love for the outdoors, so they bond a lot through that. but aiden understands her introverted, soft spoken personality better and is usually the first person she goes to when she has a problem. - height once fully grown: 5'9" - sorry sarah!!! - job ambition: national geographic photographer or environmental scientist - faceclaim: virginia gardner

the ATLA AU no asked for (with angst!) by Made of stars

Nutraceuticals: Not a Trick, Only Treats For Kids
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” — Hippocrates
To raise healthy children is every parent’s goal. This starts from pregnancy and continues as the child grows with good medical care, proper diet, and active lifestyle. However, diet and exercise are sometimes not enough as digestive issues and vitamin deficiencies are inevitable despite our best efforts. This is where the role of nutraceuticals comes into play.
Tumblr media
Nutraceuticals can be in the form of multivitamins which serve as supplements for nutrient deficiencies. From Hero National Products, CA, the makers of Yummi Bears and Yummi Blast children’s multivitamins supplements, Jim Studer has mentioned how children are notoriously picky eaters which results in not getting the adequate nutrients, vitamins, and minerals they need to stay healthy (Wright, 2005). Through the marvel of nutraceuticals, this compensates nutritional deficiencies in a fun way to acquire the nutrients children need daily.
As the relationship of food and diseases and costs of healthcare progress over the decades, the leading health conditions affecting children have opened doors in the nutraceutical industry which is evident in the trend in the kid’s food and beverage market with the rise of products addressing immunity, cognitive health, bone health, and obesity (Pushpangadan et al., 2014; Ohr, 2010). Prabu et al. (2012) discussed how nutraceutical products offer health benefits on reducing the risk of numerous chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis and more. These also help in improving physiological and cognitive function by treating headaches, constipation, and diminished memory. Furthermore, findings of improved cognitive function in children within a period of 23 weeks were reported by Roberts et al. (2020) in assessing food supplements in relation to improving cognitive memory, along with hemoglobin levels, growth, body composition, and cerebral blood flow, in children at risk of undernutrition. Backed up by science and research, nutraceuticals are established to improve health and prevent chronic diseases which are greatly beneficial for children as they need adequate nutrients to grow and develop holistically.
Tumblr media
Nutraceuticals level up the nutrition children get by offering a combination of nutritional properties with medicinal value. Eating healthy would mean a whole lot more than just images of broccolis and apples with the different enticing flavors and colors packed in nutritious goodies available in the market. This is what scientists call “optimal nutrition”. This is what your kids deserve.
Nutraceuticals are significant natural bioactive compounds that offer health and medical benefits to people. The “nutraceuticals” terminology was coined by Dr. Stephen L. De Felice in 1989, founder and chairman of the Foundation for Advancement in Medicine, an American association that promotes medical health research (Catinean et al., 2018). He described a nutraceutical as a food component that promotes health benefits, including disease prevention and treatment by linking nutrition to the pharmaceutical field. Nutraceuticals, commonly known as medical foods, functional foods, designer foods, and nutritional supplements, are product isolated or purified food substances that are usually marketed in therapeutic ways (Sheeshka & Lacroix, 2008). These include nutritional and medicinal functional foods such as milk, cereals, fortified dairy products, supplements, vitamins, herbals, citrus fruits, and more.
Microbial biotechnology is one of the leading key factors in the development of economically valuable chemical and biological products as well as agricultural and environmental agents with the use of promising microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and microalgae (Liakopoulou-kyriakides & Vázquez, 2011). Microbial production platforms are considered to be an eco-friendly approach for the production of value-added nutraceuticals obtained from simple carbon sources. In this regard, Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae are utilized to produce complex and diverse chemicals namely, prebiotics, poly amino acids, phytochemicals, and polysaccharides due to their versatility as cell factories (Wang, Guleria, Koffas & Yan, 2015).
Nutraceuticals market in the Philippines is currently in its infancy stage due to the dependence on traditional pharmaceutical medicine system by the country’s growing middle class population, which accounts for the majority of the Filipino population. Progress in the nutraceutical industry is evident during the 2012-2017 review period, and is expected to further expand from year 2020 onwards due to the rising awareness of nutraceuticals’ benefits among the youth through media, internet, and medical sources. Food companies are now offering food modernization and modest improvements such as reduced salt or fat levels, less sugar content and the likes. Conversely, pharmaceutical companies are now beginning to generate new medical professionals and pharmacists targeted consumer health compounds. All of these factors will contribute to the expansion of the nutraceuticals market in the Philippines, together with higher revenue generation opportunities in the future.
Tumblr media
In order to address kids’ immunity, bone health, cognitive health, and obesity, locally produced nutraceutical products are available which typically include omega-3 fatty acids, yeast fermentates, probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins, minerals, and whole grains. Some examples of leading nutraceutical products in the local market include: Cherifer with PGM (Pubertal Growth Maximizer), Centrum multivitamins for kids, PedZinc plus C, Ceelin, and various other nutraceuticals in the form of beverages.
But, what if your kids refuse to take their nutraceuticals? It’s a known fact that kids hate taking their medicine. So, how would nutraceuticals be appealing to kids? Fear not because there are ways to make this stress-free for you and your children! For one, we should inform the children about the benefits of what they are taking in the most comprehensive way possible. The information has to be appealing for them! Instead of forcing the kids to take the tablet, make them understand why they have to take it in a way they could relate to. No kid, or even adult, would like having things forced onto them without knowing why. Second, find the best nutraceutical which could work for your kids. If they have trouble swallowing tablets, look for flavored chewables. Better yet, give them syrups that would be suitable for their palates. Children would appreciate this option the most, especially with the availability of strawberry flavored syrup that was also a nutraceutical in the market. Because of this, taking medicines would be enjoyable until the children would reach an age that would be mature enough for tablets. Lastly, if your child is too stubborn, find the root of your problem. Based on previous experience, children do not like medicine due to their taste, form, or the fact that their parents are forcing them to. Find a solution based on the problem, and do not forget to let your kids make their own choices! Give them the option of choosing whether they take their medicine before or after taking a shower, in the kitchen or in the bedroom, via cup or syringe. Compromise with your child and reward them, as they can be motivated by incentives. If you are able to find the problem, the solution will follow if you put effort into it. Don’t forget, make taking nutraceuticals fun and creative for your kids!
Nourishment is the process of getting food in our bodies and using it as unrefined materials as fuel for energy, vitamins, and minerals that keep our body functioning well and healthy. Parents should show concern and pay attention over their kids' eating habits because it is their responsibility to ensure that their children would grow up healthy. Here are a few ideas that will encourage your kids to eat their greens; spike up your kids' meals with fresh fruit and vegetables, a variety of food within and between meals will guarantee that your kids get all the nutrients they need. Additionally, a blend of colors and shapes with simple flavors is a good way of attracting and training kids in eating a healthy meal instead of fast food or sweets. Fast food per se is not bad, but it becomes a health risk when it replaces children’s regular meals all the time, as this will lead to deprivation of their nutrients such as vitamins. Furthermore, fatty foods stimulate contractions in the digestive tract, which can either slow down the emptying of the stomach and worsen constipation, or speed up movement, leading to or worsening diarrhea. To prevent your child from experiencing this, you should limit food that is high in fat in their diet and pair fatty foods with high-fiber foods for easier digestion. Always keep in mind that it is vital to get your children an early start on eating healthy meals, to eat in moderation, and refrain from fatty food. These will establish good nutritional habits in your child, and it will become part of their lifestyle for the rest of their life.
