One thing I love about s2 is how well the needle drops line up with what we're seeing on screen. S1 had great music choices but I think s2 goes above and beyond.

Strawberry Letter 23 (by Shuggie Otis) plays during Ed's crew's raid montage, and it's so perfect - I wrote about this here, but this is a song about sending love letters and, just as Stede was sending letters to Ed, Ed's raids are like messages to Stede.

Francis Bebey's Pygmy Love Song plays over Ed's impossible bird speech to Frenchie, and as the shot transitions from Ed to Stede, looking at the moon together. I love how Ed is in such a dark place, but the lyrics over the scene are "my heart is full of love." Even as Ed is thinking about never returning to land, his heart is full of love for Stede.

We all know This Woman's Work (Kate Bush) was incredible during s2e3, but something about the lines "I know you've got a little life in you left, I know you've got a lot of strength left" playing as Ed decides he's not ready to die still gets me every time.

Seabird (Alessi Brothers) is probably my favorite all season, just because "listen lonely seabird, you've been away from land too long" is so perfect to play over Ed, the man who decided he was going to be an impossible bird and never return to land, giving himself a second chance and returning to the ship with the man he loves.

The people responsible for picking the songs used this season owe me for emotional damages. I don't think they could've done a more perfect job. It's another example of how much love and care is put into this show; they don't just look for appropriate vibes, they went out of their way to pick songs that add to and enhance what we see on screen.

i hope ruby gets a well-that’s-alright-then-style notdeath. on the one hand it will make haters mad because oh no not another companion with an impermanent end (and i like to see haters mad) on the other it would require creativity to depict this in a new way + i love all the implications i love the dark fairytale quality of these companion exits i love my un-undead schrodinger’s women

with the way the legend of ruby sunday is titled… legends aren’t usually told about living people. legends are stories of the bygone past, of an age long since over, fictionalised and overgrown with folklore like barnacles sticking to an abandoned shell. there is such a thing as a living legend, but they’re exceedingly rare. the unmistakeable raven’s call in the 73 yards teaser, the trailer’s cut to fifteen crying alone after promising to cherry he’d protect her daughter… the foreshadowing is clear as day…

and yet. there’s one massive HOWEVER. ruby appears in s15: millie’s been spotted on set filming it. which leads me to believe — the doctor isn’t one to take the time travel route and revisit companions that in his future are genuinely dead. that would hurt too much, it would cause unnecessary trauma and could break the timeline. that must mean ruby stays alive in some way. ish. she’s alive and a legend and a mystery. girl-ballad girl-song girl-paradox

During the first two days of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Planned Parenthood set up a mobile unit in a nearby neighborhood to offer free health care services including medication abortion and vasectomies. Although the unit and the services were not connected to the convention, right-wing media had a meltdown and accused the DNC of being “morally wrong” and “sick” and “killing preborn children.” 

Planned Parenthood provided its mobile health clinic’s free services outside the DNC to help those in states with restrictive reproductive health access

Planned Parenthood Great Rivers provided free vasectomies, abortion medication, and emergency contraception in a mobile clinic in a neighborhood near the Democratic National Convention in Chicago during the convention’s first two days. According to Mother Jones, “the appointments had been filled” before the convention even began. The mobile unit and the Planned Parenthood services were not connected to the convention. [Mother Jones, 8/18/24; CBS News, 8/20/24] 

According to the group, “The mobile clinic is a demonstration of the possibilities when states like Illinois work to support, rather than restrict, access to affordable health care.” As CBS News reported, “A spokesperson said one goal is to help people who travel to Illinois from states where access to those services has been limited since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and other states began severe restrictions or outright bans on abortion and other reproductive care.” [Planned Parenthood, 8/19/24; CBS News, 8/20/24]  

Four of Illinois’ neighboring states -- Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa, and Indiana -- have severe restrictions on abortion and reproductive health access. Kentucky and Missouri have near-total abortion bans except in certain medical emergencies. Indiana has a near-total abortion ban except in cases of medical emergency or in cases of sexual assault and incest. Iowa has banned abortion after six weeks with some exceptions including some rape and incest cases, danger to the life of the pregnant person, and “ life-threatening fetal abnormalities.” [AP News, 1/31/24, 4/4/24; Missouri Independent, 8/13/24; NPR, 6/28/24]
