hangman meets 'thena
wc: 1.7k
synopsis: word is, there's a new pilot on board carrier air wing nine, and she flies for the VFA-14, the Tophatters.
main masterlist
athena-verse master post
a/n: the highly requested hangman and athena meet blurb, let me know what else you'd like to see from this universe, especially things that exist outside the storyline. or even if you just want more of certain characters. This serves as a precursory understanding to Jake and Athena, it probably doesn't answer every question about them, but it might help you see their foundation a bit better. but special shoutout to @djs8891 @tgmreader @rory-cakes and @fanreader75 for asking specifically about hangman and athenas dynamic (mentions at the end as well)
Tumblr media
You’d heard of him, everyone active had. The only active aviator with a confirmed kill, never mind that your dad had two.
Hangman was exactly what you expected if you were honest.
Phoenix, who had taken an instant liking to you as soon as you’d been reassigned to the Tophatters, had filled you in on all the Lemoore gossip. Phoenix flew with the VFA-41, the Black Aces, also based out of Lemoore, and in fact, on the same carrier as you, Commander, Carrier Air Wing Nine. Her first order of business was getting you caught up on the carrier, that included learning the players, and while she was happy to introduce you to different Naval officers, the only one she warned against was Hangman.
Someone really should have told her that at your core, you were your father’s daughter.
Let it be known, you did not go looking for him. He appeared in all his Ken Doll Aviator glory as you were doing a morning check on your F/A 18E. Apparently he also flew an F/A 18E, ‘Nix on the other hand had an F/A 18F, as she normally flew with a WSO.
He approached, full of cocky attitude, and maybe it was all the years being raised by both Ice and Mav, but when he spoke it was like you could understand him just as fluently as you did with them. You could see where Nat was coming from with “honestly, Athena, Hangman in two words? Texan Douchewad.”
“Well, Howdy, darlin’, scuttlebutt was that there was a new girl on board, glad to meet you, name’s Hangman,” was his introduction.
You couldn’t help the smirk when he said girl, “Isn’t the hallmark of a proper southern boy, that he’s, well, proper?” you shoot back, eye brow quirked. “I’m a woman, not a girl.”
It was fun, watching the way his smirk melted, how his brow furrowed, as he tried to catch up.
“You-”
“Phoenix gave me a run down, but to be honest, I’ve always preferred forming my own perceptions,” you shrug, as you continue your check.
As you brush past him, you aren’t surprised to hear him following after you. “Ah, so my reputation precedes me then?” he muses, and you can see the way he uses his charm and humor to cover, a shield of bravado, too bad he didn’t realize you were raised by bravado.
“Not exactly, though I did see your plaque at Top Gun, to be fair, I saw Phoenix’s too,” you shrug again.
“So you’re the fresh blood, huh?” he prompts, and finally you turn and smile at him.
“I guess fresh blood is better than being called new girl. Name’s Athena, you’d do well to use it,” you tell him, smile in place.
“Athena? As in th4e Greek goddess of war and wisdom?” he asks, brows furrowed down.
“That’s the one,” you nod, moving to check the landing gear.
“Athena as in, the Naval Aviator who climbed through the ranks and had two separate stations before she went to Top Gun?” he follows up and you turn.
You turn to face Hangman, and now your brows are pulled, “How’d you know that?”
“I keep tabs on things that pique my interest,” he shrugs, and your lip curls on the end. “Rumor was you had Admirals arguing over who got you under their command…”
“Nice to meet you Hangman,” you decide finally, climbing back from under the plane, and offering him your hand.
“Pleasure’s mine, Miss Athena,” he smirks back. “It true your old man flew too?” he tacks the question on as he shakes your hand.
You can see it in his eyes, nepotism, you know it’s where is brain’s gone. It’s like you couldn’t escape it, everyone assumed that’s how you got as far as you have, as quick as you have. They were wrong.
“Yeah, mostly f-14s though, nothing with the juice of my baby,” you straight up lie, so what if your dad was still flying? So what if he was probably flying f/a-18s or something experimental? No one but you needed the specifics, and you’re pretty sure it wouldn’t help you fight against the nepo-baby claims. Too bad no one realized how much of a detriment being attached to Maverick actually was. It made most of the higher ups uneasy about taking you on, unsure if you’d inherited your father’s need for speed and reckless streak, you had, but you were just better than him at keeping it in check, if Ice taught you anything, it was that — “ice cold, kiddo, no mistakes.”
“Must’ve been nice, having a leg up like that,” he’s still smiling as he talks down at you.
You match his smile and catch the flicker of confusion in his eyes as you walk up closer to him. “It was, see, it prepared me for a lifetime of dealing with cocky naval aviators and their inflated sense of bubble wrap bravado.”
“That all?” he presses, staring down at you, the two of you now face to face, staring hard at each other, but you caught the little twitch of his eye at your term.
“No,” you smirk before turning and walking away, “but I’ve got a hop to prep for, see you around Hangman.”
He finds you in the Mess later that day. You’d just returned from morning drills with your squad, and was eating with Phoenix.
“Ladies,” he greets, setting his own tray down in the seat opposite you.
“And I’ve officially lost my appetite,” Phoenix decided, standing up. “Athena, I’ll catch you later, I’d say it’s nice to see you, Bagman, but we know better,” she states, grabbing her tray, patting your shoulder and walking away.
“You sure know how to clear a room, Hangman,” you note, eyes flicking to Phoenix over Hangman’s shoulder, Nat was clearing her tray and pauses to look back and roll her eyes dramatically as she looks at Hangman’s back.
Your lip twitches and you lift your glass of water to cover up the smile threatening to split your lips.
“Bubble wrap bravado,” Hangman repeats back to you, echoing your statement from yesterday.
“What about it?” you challenge.
“Explain it to me,” it’s not a question, not in how it’s phrased, but you understand that he is asking.
“Protective to an extent, easier to pop than you think, so long as you apply the pressure properly. Problem is, everyone knows when it does, it’s usually a bit loud,” you explain, and he seems so incredibly focused on you.
You didn’t mind the hyper-focus though, you’d coined the term a long time ago. It had originally been for a different boy, one with a temper, but who you’d watched grow up. Ice had thought it an apt descriptor, he’d even taken it to describe a few officer’s he’d interacted with over the years.
“Hmm,” he hums, eyes glued to yours.
“You disagree?” you ask.
“No. I think you hit it on the head,” he admits and your lips curl up just the slightest bit, at least he seemed honest… cock sure and stubborn too, but honest.
“A naval aviator for a father was a lot of things, Hangman,” you admit, hesitating for a moment, deciding how much you wanted to say. “It was limited time, and firm goodbyes. It was getting behind a yoke for the first time when I was 12. It was learning ranks at the same time I was learning how to do multiplication,” you say, and you study how his expression changed which each revelation. “Having a Naval Aviator for a father might have given me a home field advantage, but that’s all it did. The rest, the wings, the assignments, I earned those,” you tell him seriously.
“Sure you did,” he nods along condescendingly, but his eyes betray his curiosity, and for now, that was enough for you.
You smile again at him, though this time it is a bit sour. “You don’t believe me, that’s fine, fair even, to be skeptical. But you should know, you’re gonna eat crow when you realize how wrong you were,” you tell him seriously, before standing up with your plate and glass, and walking away.
You get your chance to prove him wrong just a few days later when the Tophatters get assigned to a drill with both of the other squadrons on board the carrier, the Black Aces, and the Vigilantes. Meaning both Nat and Jake are in the air with you.
After is the first time Jake looks at you with something other than cocky contempt. As if seeing you fly up close resolved some of his concerns, but there’s still something there. He was waiting for the other shoe, too bad no one told him that you’d had both feet firmly on the ground since you signed your life to the Unites States Naval Services.
You get paired with him about a month and a half later for a cover assignment for an emergency evac of a SEAL team.
Normally assignments were set within squads, but it was an emergency evac and the carrier was docked. You and Jake had been the closest to the carrier at the time who were qualified, and so you were the two who were sent off. You flew south into South America, and while a lot of the details were later labeled as redacted, Jake never questioned your ability after. Nor should he. You saved his life.
He did however decide that meant you were friends, much to the immense annoyance of one Natasha Trace.
Considering the entire mission had been classified and redacted, you weren’t able to explain a lot of it to her, but when Jake started choosing his words a little more carefully she did her best not to start anything either. When he started sitting with you in the mess, she eyed him carefully. And when he started following you around in any downtime that lined up, she kept her mouth shut.
She found a new case study in the two of you, the outward and obvious differences between Hangman with Athena, and Hangman without. Her eyes jumping from how easily you let your guard down with him, and how utterly soft Hangman could be when he thought no one was paying attention.
Natasha, to her credit, had tried, desperately tried, to get more information out of you regarding your budding friendship, but all you would ever offer was a simple, “people tend to be more complex than what meets the eye, ‘Nix, I’m proof of that. So is he, and so are you.”
She decided then and there, you had way too much tact and patience, and maybe, just maybe, that was what Hangman needed.

Bob can hear the siren song of his bunk over the chatter of the locker room. He slams his locker closed, turning to shoulder his bag, coming face to face with one Jake Seresin. The grin is ever present, the edges of his eyes crinkled as he toys with the toothpick in his mouth. “Something I can do for you Hangman?” He’s exhausted, sleep tugging on the edges of his mind. “Does anything get to you?” Bob looks away from the intense gaze. “Of course, things get to me, I am human. Despite the rumors that I’m some sort of cyborg.”
“Don’t tell Fanboy, you’d break his heart.” He can’t help the snort of laughter that slips past his lips. “Didn’t think you cared.” “However,” Jake’s hand lands on his chest, solid and warm. “I wanted to offer my help.” “Your help?” Bob doesn’t pull away from the touch, instead he studies Jake’s face. “In case you ever needed words defined. I mean a sweet southern boy like you, isn’t well versed in the rough vernacular that passes for conversation around here.” “Jake.” Bob blinks at him. “You do realize I’ve been in for a few years. I graduated Top Gun. I’m a full-grown man.” “I know, but things can get awfully rough around here. Think of me as your own personal translator.” The grin hadn’t faded. In fact, it had widened. “I’m not awake enough for this conversation.” Bob murmurs. “Listen closely, pretty boy.” His fingers wrap around Jake’s wrist, and with a tug, Jake’s back is against the lockers, penned in by Bob’s body. “When I need you to explain somethin’ to me, I’ll ask.” His voice is even, low, letting some of that drawl creep in softening the edges of his words. “Sound good?” Bob can’t help but smirk at the play of emotions on Jake’s face. “Yeah,” Jake says voice breathy. “I got-got the message, loud and clear.” Bob rests fingers under Jake’s chin, tipping his face up to hold his gaze. “You look like you have questions.” His thumb traces along Jake’s lower lip. “Go ahead and ask.” “I get the message, but I don’t believe you.” Jake says. There’s a tremor in his voice, those cheekbones flushed darkly. “You don’t believe me?” Bob purrs. He leans in, lips brushing the shell of Jake’s ear. “You don’t believe me that I know what I’m talking about, or that I can completely undo you?” “The latter.” Jake says. His head tips slightly, the long column of his throat open and exposed. Bob chuckles softly. “You would look so pretty under me.” He breathes out against Jake’s skin. Bob blinks, looking down when Jake’s hands land on him, resting on his hips, pulling him closer. Jake swallows hard, licking his lower lip, his mouth dry. “You’d like to think I’d be the one on the bottom.” “I know you would.” Bob murmurs, lips brushing along the smooth column of Jake’s throat. He smiles against warm skin when Jake’s head tips, offering more of his neck. “The first time at least,” he sighs against Jake’s jaw, fingertips tracing sculpted cheekbones, thumb rubbing slowly over Jake’s lower lip. “Sprawled out, gorgeous golden skin against white sheets.” Bob’s words ghost against Jake’s jaw, lips. “I’d take my time, want to feel every last inch of you tremble and shake under my hands.” His fingers tease at the hem of Jake’s black t-shirt. “Would you moan for me, or would I have to earn them?” A strangled, soft sob comes from Jake’s parted lips. “Kiss me.” “I will.” Bob replies. “Where though, here?” His fingers brush Jake’s throat again. “How about here?” At the soft spot where Jake’s neck and shoulder meet. “Maybe here,” His palm flat against Jake’s chest. Bob’s lips are millimeter’s away from Jake’s. “Say please.” “Please,” Jake whispers; supplicates, prays. It takes half a second, if that, before Bob’s slotting his mouth against Jake’s. Easy, unhurried, Jake clutching at Bob’s shirt, pressing as close as he can. He can feel Jake’s heart beating hard and fast. Only when Jake moans against his mouth does Bob split the man’s lips with his tongue. He licks into Jake’s mouth deepening the kiss. “Jesus Christ, Bobby.” Jake mutters. “He can’t make you feel as good as I can.” Bob says, his forehead resting against Jake’s breathing the other man deep. It’s all consuming this heat between them, and fuck if he’s not going to stoke the flames higher. “Let me tell you sweetheart, if I get on my knees, it’s not to pray.” He can taste Jake’s aftershave on his skin, liking the way the man’s pulse flutters under his tongue. “I love sucking cock.” Jake’s hips stutter against his, Bob pressing him tighter against the locker. “Swallow you down until you’re spilling down my throat with more of those pretty little sounds.” Bob continues, one hand between them, teasing at the soft skin just under the waistband of Jake’s sweats. Jake chases the touch, body leaning into it, another soft breathy moan coming sliding past his lips. “Maybe even give you a taste of yourself.” Bob chases a droplet of sweat on Jake’s skin with his tongue. The sound that comes from Jake is one that will linger in Bob’s mind for a while. It’s needy, broken, debauched, and it goes straight to Bob’s cock. “You’d like that wouldn’t you?” “Yeah,” Jake mutters. Bob untangles himself from Jake, mourning the loss of the other man’s body against his. “You know, I’m not sure I said all that right. If you’re not too busy later, stop by my room. I’d love to have you translate it for me.” “I will.” Jake manages to say. “Payback’s a bitch.” “I’ll let him know you said that Seresin.” Bob chuckles as he picks up his bag. /end

Phoenix and you entered Penny’s bar when your phone suddenly rang. Taking it out, the nametag on it made your eyes widen. You touched Phoenix on her shoulder, letting her know you needed a moment. She simply smiled, heading further into the bar to the booth were Bob, Coyote and Fanboy already were. The phone kept buzzing as you weren’t sure what to do. Panicking a bit as to say. You knew not picking up, would do nothing as he would just keep calling you.
Answering was even terrible, as you knew he’d say anything to get you to yield. Like a collective caller, kept he calling you. Looking around frantically, you spotted the first person at Penny’s bar. You rushed over to the bar, pulling Hangman back by his shoulder. – “Emergency, you’re my boyfriend.” – you breathed out, holding the phone out to him. Hangman smiled cocky. – “Well, well. If you were desperate for a kiss, you’d just had to ask Y/n.” – Hangman replied all smug to your annoyance.
“No. No! You’re not actually my boyfriend.” – you informed him hastily. Hangman furrowed his brows, frowning. – “Make up your mind girl.” – he let out confused to what was happening. You moved your phone higher up for him to notice. – “I need you to be my boyfriend and make him stop calling me!” – you called out almost frantically at how slow he was catching up.
“Right.” – He simply said, setting a beer down and taking your phone in his hand. He answered the phone, giving you a cheeky eyebrow wiggle. Hangman didn’t even listen to what the other person was saying on the phone. – “Listen bud, stop calling my girlfriend.” – he spoke through. He heard an immediate response. – “Uhm her boyfriend.” – Hangman answered, showing you a goofy look at how obvious it was who he was talking to.
The man kept blabbing in his ear as Hangman had little interest in keeping him on the phone. – “Stop calling us, bye.” – he spoke in such a manufactured voice, he could work in sales and be dealing with a terrible customer but still upholding his work voice. Hangman hung up, giving you the phone back. – “Thank you!” – you let out relieved, bending a bit through your knees out of gratitude. – “So what do I get in return?” – Hangman asked.
“This beer?” – you suggested, placing your hand on the counter by it. Hangman tsked his tongue. – “Already paid for it sunshine.” – he said with a chuckle. – “Fine.” – you breathed out. – “I’ll clean your locker.” – you took out another suggestion as Hangman thought. – “How about wash my clothes?” – he responded. – “Deal.” – you agreed it was just that. Hangman shook hands with you to seal the deal.
He picked up his beer, throwing his arm over your shoulder. – “Who was the dude anyways?” – he asked, leading you to the others. – “My ex.” – you sighed out. Hangman looked half in shock at you. – “I didn’t know you dated someone.” – he called out as you had to shush his loud voice. – “It was like 6 months ago.” – you informed him.
“And he’s still calling you?” – Hangman blurted out as you hummed with a nod as response. – “I can’t shake him off.” – you sighed out nearing the booth with your friends. – “Well good thing your boyfriend saved the day.” – Hangman winked with a ridiculous smile. – “Not my boyfriend.” – you reminded him before sitting down.
Back in the locker room, you were washing Hangman’s attire. Washing them by hand as he called them delicate and needed to be handled with care. – “Uhm what are you doing?” – Phoenix asked seeing you in the locker room as she had walked by. – “Are those Hangman’s clothing?” – she pointed out when you had pulled it up to see if it was clean enough, revealing his nametag. – “Phoenix!” – you called out startled, splashing some water as your arms lowered immediately. – “Why are you washing his clothes?” – she wanted to know. – “I owe it to him.” – you responded, scrubbing his pilot gear.
“You dared to bet with Hangman. Bold.” – she answered impressed. – “It’s not that.” – you told her with a soft sigh. – “He did something for me, so I have to return the favour.” – you explained. – “Right.” – Phoenix widened her eyes briefly in delight. – “If your dad could see you know.” – she chuckled a bit. – “He’d flip that you fell so low.” You grunted soft. – “Good thing my dad.” – you emphasized. – “Can’t see me.” – you replied bitsy. – “Ohh cold touch.” – Phoenix teased touching her own shoulder. You scooped up some water, splashing it at her to wipe that smile off her face.
Phoenix screamed, dodging away when the water came her way. Half laughing, you teasing her with another scoop as she already darted away. When you were finished up with Hangman’s uniforms, you hung them neatly to dry. You came out of the lockers, making your way out of the hangar when you got pulled aside by Rooster. He pushed you firm up against the wall. – “Are you dating Hangman?” – called out at the brink of losing his mind. – “What?” – you responded confused.
“Are you dating him?” – Rooster wanted to know with a stern look. – “What, no, no…” – you replied waving your hands across. Rooster exhaled deep moving his fingers through his hair. – “Who told you this?” – you asked curious. – “Hangman has been bragging to everyone he’s dating you.” – Rooster let you know. Your eyes widened with shock.
You pushed Rooster a bit back, to make some room for you to leave. You needed to find Hangman and you needed to find him now. Jogging out of the hangar into the open. You saw a group of people near the F16’s going over to them. The closer you got, the clearer you saw Hangman amongst them.
“Hangman!” – you shouted drawing his attention. – “Looks like my girlfriend needs me.” – he said to Fanboy and Coyote all smug. Coyote rolled with his eyes as Fanboy shook his head. Hangman turned round to you, welcoming you with a warm smile. – “Yes my love.” – he said as you grabbed him firmly by the arm, dragging him away from the others. – “So eager.” – Hangman whispered to his friends with a chuckle. You came to a stop, letting harshly go of him.
“What are you doing?” – you called out giving him a little shove. – “Au.” – Jake mouthed pretending to be hurt from your shove. – “Jake!” – you called out wanting an answer out of him. – “What?” – he replied loud, making himself taller. – “Why are you telling everyone we are dating?” – you freaked out. Jake scoffed loud, turning his head away. – “Are we not?” – he answered cocky, wanting to slip his arm over your shoulder. It made you puff annoyed, crossing your arms.
“Oh come on Y/n, don’t be such a baby about it.” – Jake said taking you by the elbow, wanting you to uncross your arms. – “It’s a joke, sunshine.” – he kept tugging at your arm, trying to be smooth and cool at the same time. – “Sunshine!” – you suddenly heard loud, making you straighten your back. Hangman’s back straightened as well. Cyclone appeared coming to you. – “Iceman wants to speak to you.” – he said firmly, making your shoulders slouch. Jake was snickering quietly at you with a little point. – “He asked for both of you!” – Cyclone made clear, making Jake’s smile drop.
You tugged on his elbow, pulling him with you. Following Cyclone inside and up the stairs to Iceman’s desk. Cyclone knocked on the door, before popping his head inside. – “They are present.” – he said to Iceman. Cyclone stepped aside, expression flat as he allowed you to walk in. – “Tell me, am I hanging?” – Jake whispered to Cyclone wanting to know his outcome. Cyclone ignored him, giving him an extra shove into the room. – “Dad!” – you said with mixed expectations, opening your arms to a hug.
Iceman got up from behind his desk, coming to hug you. – “How is my little girl?” – he asked. – “Flying and thriving.” – you told him, making him form a smile on his lips. His gaze then shifted to Jake, who swallowed nervously. Iceman got all serious. He went to sit again, gesturing for you to sit as well. Jake and you sat down, unsure what to expect. – “So you are the one dating my daughter.” – Iceman spoke. – “Dad no…” – you blurted out, waving your hands across.
Iceman observed Hangman closely as it made him move uncomfortable in the chair. – “How’s his flying?” – he asked. – “Superb… sir.” – Jake replied loudly, humbling himself immediately. Iceman glanced your way. You could only smile sheepishly at him. – “I’m a bit saddened you didn’t tell me Y/n.” – Iceman began. – “But he looks decent enough. As long as he doesn’t hurt you… or else…” – Iceman gave Hangman his death stare.
Jake swallowed again. – “Dad we’re not…” – you began wanting to explain as Jake grabbed your hand out of the blue. – “No, no sunshine, it’s okay. He knows now.” – Jake spoke upholding the image of dating. You stared confused at him, why he would even want to go on with his stupid joke. – “Jake, this is my dad.” – you said between clenched teeth to him. Making it clear that he didn’t need to mess around. – “I’m so happy for you Y/n.” – Iceman said cheery.
“The man’s happy Y/n, let him be.” – Jake said to guilt trip you. You sighed soft letting yourself fall back in the chair. Jake got up. – “Well it was nice of you to call us in, sir.” – Jake said, nudging you to get up as well. Your dad chuckled happily at his manners as you could only roll your eyes. Jake extended his hand out to Iceman. Iceman took it to shake. – “I’m not one for favours, but if you ever need one for my daughter.” – he whispered to Jake with a wink.
Jake breathed out a laugh of surprise, glancing your way. Just to rub his it more in your face. – “Now we must really go.” – Hangman spoke tapping your elbow, to get you to follow. – “Give her a kiss.” – Iceman replied. Jake’s expression dropped. – “S’cuse me?” – he blurted out. – “Give her a kiss.” – he repeated gesturing at you.
Jake looked sheepishly at you, chuckling nervously. – “Sir truly…” – Jake began wanting to talk his way out of it. – “I want to see just how much you care for my daughter.” – Iceman persisted. Hangman took your hand, pulling you closer to give a kiss on the cheek. – “Give her a real kiss!” – Iceman shouted out of good sports. Jake sighed loud with a soft drop of his gaze. You raised your eyebrow at him, curious to see what he would do. He took you by the elbow, pulling you even closer.
“Just a quick one.” – he whispered to you. – “One second.” – you responded. Hangman held his finger up to his lips, looking all smug. He lowered his finger, giving you a quick nod before he’d kiss you. Your lips touched for a split second, pulling away quick. Iceman shook his head with disappointment. – “We have to go dad!” – you called out, opening the door. Dragging Jake with you out of his office. Downstairs, you let go of Jake.
“Your joke just escalated Hangman. Now my dad knows!” – you called out panicking. – “Hey you asked me to be your boyfriend.” – Jake replied loud. – “For like a few seconds.” – you shouted back. – “You asked for this Y/n.” -  Jake answered loud taking off. – “Where are you going?” – you called out to him. Jake turned around, pulling his shoulders up. It made you groan loud.
Phoenix and you were stretching before exercise. – “Boyfriend coming over.” – she pointed out, turning her torso, holding her arm by her elbow. You looked up seeing Hangman come over with the other boys. It made you look at her with a certain glance. Phoenix stopped, walking off when Hangman came near. She joined the others behind him. – “You know for a sunshine, you frown a lot.” – he pointed out, touching your forehead.
You slapped his hand away. He grabbed you by the shoulders, moving his head closer to you. – “Smile, your dad is going to watch.” – he whispered making you widen your eyes. Jake moved aside from you, throwing his arm over you as he led you to the others. Maverick, Cyclone and Iceman neared. You all followed Maverick to the beach for a match of rugby. A good team exercise Maverick would call it. Cyclone and Iceman sat down, watching the pathetic play of rugby.
Hangman and you were on opposite teams. Fanboy had the ball, throwing it at Coyote. Hangman jumped in front of him, catching the football before his eyes. He then ran with it to your side, throwing his hard on the ground. He called it out in victory, pointing towards Iceman. Iceman clapped for Hangman’s score. He then looked all smug at you. Phoenix nudged you as you rolled your eyes at him. Trying not to find it sweet. Rooster caught the ball wanting to throw it at you. You caught it, wanting to run when you got picked up from the ground.
Hangman had picked you up, making you squeal loud out of surprise. Your feet hit the ground again, as he kept his arms around you. – “Try getting out of this now, sunshine.” – he breathed out. You wriggled in his grip for freedom. When you weren’t getting any, you tried running. Hangman laughed loud, squeezing his arms tighter around you. – “Where are you going sunshine?” – he laughed out. You tried so hard not to laugh as well, not to enjoy it too, but you failed.
You stopped trying to run, laughing loud. You tossed the football over to Bob. You showed him your empty hands, showing him his attempt to stop you failed. Hangman picked you up in response, making you squeal again. He then pressed a kiss on your cheek so quick, he barely caught himself doing it. You turned round in his embrace, staring a bit at him. Jake stared back at you.
Swallowing, he let go of you, scratching his neck sheepishly. You looked blissful away. The two of you hesitantly got back into the game, questioning whether you were actually starting to like each other or that it was the drive of fake dating for a while now.
After practise, you were all exhausted. Having been playing till the sun had set. Worn out, you all decided to grab a few drinks at Penny’s bar. You went up to her bar as Jake followed. Almost instinctively. You held four fingers up to Penny, ordering beer. Jake leaned with his elbows on the counter, throwing you a smug smile. Your phone vibrated in your pocket. Confused, you pulled it out holding it to the front. Jake’s eye fell on the caller, taking the phone from your hand before you could react.
He picked up, turning around to lean against the counter with his back. – “What do you want?” – he said bothered. Your ex didn’t even have to finish his sentence when Jake spoke again. – “Listen asshole, if you call her one more time. I’ll make sure you’ll never see daylight again. You won’t see me coming. I’ll fly above your house, aiming for your pathetic bedroom and you’ll be burned to crisps in a matter of seconds.” – Jake threatened making you stare in shock at him.
“She doesn’t want you cause I’m her boyfriend. She’s mine and let me tell you ass, I don’t like sharing.” – Jake said over the phone. – “This was your last call or you’re dead!” – he angrily hung up the phone. – “Thank… thank you…” – you said astonished by how hot that was. Jake tugged your phone in his pocket.
Penny arrived with the drinks as he took them, motioning with his head for you to follow. You slid into a booth with him as the others were waiting. Hangman threw an arm over your shoulder, pushing you closer to him. It made you feel like squealing. The lines of pretend and real blurring away. Jake caught you staring at him, melting as he saw you smile like the sun back at him. He moved his head closer to you, wanting to kiss you in that moment, but caught himself just in time.
He shifted his head to the side, kissing your cheek instead. It didn’t feel satisfying, but he wouldn’t dare himself to kiss you out of the blue with everyone around. Your friends were so used to the two of you dating, they hardly had any eye for it. Not clear it was all an act, started from a joke. After an hour or two, checked Jake his watch. – “I’m taking Y/n home.” – he said removing his arm from you. He got out of the booth, taking you with him.
You said goodbye to the others. Jake grabbed your hand, walking out of Penny’s bar with you. Outside he was still holding your hand as it made you snicker soft. – “No one’s watching Hangman.” – you told him. Hangman looked at you with eyes full of affection. – “I know.” – he responded, pausing you. – “Are we still faking it?” – he asked catching you by surprise. Unsure, you pulled your shoulders up. That seemed to answer Hangman enough as he cupped your cheeks, kissing your lips.
The kiss was long, anticipating the moment till he could finally kiss you. His tender kiss moved to longing and desperation as his hands grabbed you tightly. You kissed him back, fully surrendering under his spell. The lines of fake dating having been shattered long ago.

after reading so many stories where their actual names are used like Jake Seresin, Natasha Trace, Javy Machado, etc., it’s so crazy to me that not once did they say any of the pilot’s real names in the actual movie except for Bradley who has both Cyclone and Maverick say his first name (his last name is said a lot more) and Maverick (for obvious reasons)
not even like a Lieutenant Trace or a Lieutenant Seresin, they were always just simply referred to as “Lieutenant”
the only time we really see their names are on the beginning screen where Cyclone is showing Mav the 12 pilots and their last names on the tags of their uniforms in the bar scene
everyone is simply referred to as their callsign and even in cast interviews, they introduce themselves using their call signs and never the actual names
come to think of it? i genuinely feel like they weren’t in the movie THAT much because i saw a post that calculated Glen’s screen time and it was like less than five minutes total?
all this to say, fan fiction is SO powerful because this was such a minuscule detail of the movie that we could’ve forgotten about but everyone kind of just took it and ran with and now I can’t see it any other way

His momma said there were three irrefutable truths to existence. Number one, death comes for everyone. Two, lying will only get you into trouble, and three, there’s someone out there for everyone. Soulmates were a concept that permeated every part of society. Songs, movies, books, people yelling into the void of the internet about how they had found their one and everything finally made sense. Everyone’s someone was connected to them by a string. Tied to their ring finger, binding the two pieces together, by a link.
In the right light, Bob could see the thread that connected his parents. It shimmered in candlelight, and seemed to flare when they were reunited after his father went on business trips. He had noticed the pressure around his finger his sophomore year of high school. A connection—his someone. It wasn’t connected to anyone in his small town, but that wasn’t disappointing.
In fact, he had hoped it would turn out this way. He loved home, he did, but he longed for something more. He wanted to see what lay beyond the borders of his sleepy town. The urge to get up and leave settled under his skin, like an itch he couldn’t quite scratch despite how he tried. Sometimes, late at night when he couldn’t sleep, he’d trace over the faint red mark, feeling the thread under his fingertips. And sometimes, it would dance and move as though someone were tugging on it, playing with it.
After high school, he enlisted. It was the next logical step—find a profession that allowed him to see the world, hopefully give him the chance to get out from small town life and find the excitement of something new.
Bob’s momma cried when he told her that he had enlisted. His father had clapped him on the back so hard his glasses flew off his face. His sisters worried, and his brothers puffed up with pride.
His momma cried when he shipped off to basic.
Again, when he came home.
A third time when he received his orders as to where he would be stationed.
Deployments were tough. He actually missed the quiet of middle of nowhere, more importantly, he missed Sunday dinners with his family. He had learned through calls and emails that his youngest sister had found her someone. The unasked question hovered behind the regular questions of ‘what are you up to?’, ‘are you getting enough to eat’, ‘make sure you get some sleep. You look pale.’
Bob saw the photo on Facebook, even before any of his family thought to message him. Ellie beaming happily, holding a sign that read ‘found him’ and a dopy grin on her face. Bob squinted at the photo—the guy looked nice enough, Ellie looked happy. That’s all that mattered.
He'd been in for nearly six years. Qualified and completed the elite training of Top Gun. He hadn’t gone home for Ellie’s wedding. Or Beth’s, Mark’s or Brian’s.
“Are you even looking Robbie?” Beth had asked him. They were sitting side by side on the porch steps. Mirror images of each other—Bob, the elder sibling only by fifteen minutes.
“I am.” It was then Bob realized he had broken one of his momma’s irrefutable truths. He lied. He wasn’t looking, he hadn’t been looking. Work, flying, the sky had taken all his attention. Being thousands of feet above the Earth, with its majesty spread out beneath him had replaced the swooping feeling in his gut whenever he looked at the red thread on his finger.
She looked at him, the way only a twin can and pursed her lips. “Don’t give up. Please. You deserve to be happy.” Beth patted his knee, and got up, disappearing into the house. Bob leaned back on the stairs looking up at the thousands of stars in the sky, his stomach soaring and dropping as it did when he was in the backseat of a jet.
“I am happy.”
Life went on, work went on. Occasionally he’d toy with the string, tug on it. Every now and again there would be tugs in return. Once, he sent a message in morse code. The response had made him laugh. And maybe in that clumsy patterned pulling there was a hint. Morse code, for the most part was obsolete. So whoever was on the other end of his thread had made the effort to learn it. Looks or gender never really mattered, Bob dated both. Loved both, had his heart broken by both. He just hoped that he could share in all the little pieces he’s stored away under his skin. The little parts that no one knew about, the parts of him that he kept secret.
Orders to return to Top Gun came through an official email. Bob packed up, shipped out and landed at North Island. It hadn’t changed much; military bases were all carbon copies of each other for the most part. He got his stuff settled in his quarters, reported in, and was given the day to reacquaint himself his surroundings.
There was a buzzing in his ears that he couldn’t quite shake. Bob didn’t want to bother with sick bay, he couldn’t risk being taken off the detail before he knew what it was. Unable to concentrate in the beige prison that was his dorm room he decided to go out. Bars weren’t really his scene, but it was a good chance to scope out the competition and focus on something other than the heartbeat in his ears, and the ache in his hand. The redness on his ring finger was deeper, he could almost feel the thread against his flesh.
Hope and curiosity unfurled in his chest, something anticipatory taking root.
He found a stool near the bar, requesting a water from the bartender, who flashed a dazzling smile at him, sliding him the plastic cup. Peanuts were a safer alternative to the popcorn in bowls—the nuts were at least in shell still.
Bob’s hand jerks when he’s bringing the cup to his lips to drink. Barely managing to not spill on himself, he glances around to see if someone had bumped him. He’s alone—as alone as he can be. There’s two men at the dartboard, talking in undertone, one of them crowing triumphantly when he hits a third bullseye. While his eyes were covered.
Bob blinks, feeling the press of skin against his own palm when the man high-fives his friend. He’s staring and can’t bring himself to care. The other man is bronze skin, and a perfect Hollywood smile. Blond hair, green eyes, built. He’s wearing the same khaki as Bob, and from here he can see the wings marking him as an aviator.
His left hand twitches, and he swallows hard, gripping the cup of peanuts tighter. He watches as the man walks past him, headed for a pool table. Bob’s words evaporate in his throat. The man’s voice washes over him, warm and rich a honeyed drawl, aiding the slide of pleasure down his back.
More patches show up, and Bob is pulled into the gathering group of pilots. His eyes keep returning to Hangman—Jake. Metaphorical dick measuring occurs, like every other time more than two military personnel gather in one place. Emboldened by the comradery already building, the good music, or the fact that his pilot is competent and sharp-witted, Bob studies his hand.
There’s a flash of red against his skin, and every single cell in his very being is calling out for the man across the room. He toys with the thread, and when his fingers catch it, his breath hitches. There’s a tone like a too-tight guitar string, a warmth spreading from the center of his chest to the tips of his fingers and the ends of his toes.
No one else seems to have heard it.
Almost no one. Bob lifts his gaze to see Jake’s brilliant green eyes focused on him. The other man tips his head toward the doors that lead out to the beach. Bob lets his gaze drop to his hand, and when he plucks the string again, Jake’s hand tightens on the pool cue. Bob gets off his stool suddenly, excusing himself when Phoenix looks up concerned.
It's cooler outside, a breeze coming off the Pacific Ocean. Bob finds it easier to breathe. That is, until Jake’s in his space. “You.”
“Me,” Bob says.
Jake’s hand is on his, thick fingers sliding between Bob’s, their palms pressing together. “Took you long enough.” Bob opens his mouth to apologize but stops. There’s a soft smile on Jake’s face, a flush dusting on high cheekbones. Instead, he squeezes Jake’s hand, glancing down to see the tangle of nearly invisible red thread smooth itself out. Normally his heart would be racing, nervous energy washing over him. But now? There’s nothing but calm. Calm, and warmth, especially when Jake’s thumb brushes over the back of Bob’s hand. “Maybe I was waiting for you to come find me.” “I’m stubborn.” Jake says. Bob’s not sure if he’s warning him away or stating the obvious. “I’m an introvert.” “Good,” Jake says and when that smile is flashed his way, Bob forgets how to breathe. “I like dad jokes.” His free hand reaches up, fingertips tracing along Bob’s neck, his jaw. Jake cups his cheek and urges him closer. Bob’s lips part when fingertips graze his lower lip. Jake exhales softly, “Oh.” Bob leans a little closer, the first brush of Jake’s mouth against his, felt like home. /End
