Menolly and Sebell’s dynamic is that she takes after Robinton and has a custom bright blue outfit made for every major gather and he’s been wearing the same random tunic he found in a storeroom to perform since he was an apprentice

Both? Kind of both! Dragonflight is definitely the most rooted in working with old bodice ripper/medieval romance tropes, and the fallout of them, but they advance out from this as they go! (Which I'm sure you know if you're on a reread!)

Robinton is definitely a favourite of hers – he's actually based on Frederick H Robinsons, who was a good friend of Anne's.

Weird side tangent, he was originally supposed to be in a relationship with Menolly:

I had originally intended that the Harper and Menolly get together, but I thought, no, I can't do it that way.

GIBSON: Oh, but I think that's much more romantic [when they don't]. The true romantic fashion where they'd be unrequited lovers.

McCAFFREY: Yeah, it is.

GIBSON: I found it very heartbreaking when I came to that in White Dragon, where they had that small interlude admitting their love for each other.]

Now I don't mind an age gap romance, but even that feels a bit of a stretch.

I'm back in my reading era to keep myself from scrolling until I go insane while trapped under a cluster feeding 1-week old, so I'm actually actively rereading the Pern books. Thots in no particular order I'm almost done with dragonflight. Spoilers for a 50+ yr old fantasy series

Cannot decide if these books are feminist or wildly misogynistic or both (#girlboss Lessa says fuck you I won't do what you tell me and we stan, but also F'lar just shakes and slaps her around when he's mad?? And there's a whole subplot where the Lords of the holds try to rebel against the weyr and wait sorry baby's awake ok I'm back yeah they try to rebel against the weyr and so the dragonmen STEAL ALL OF THEIR WOMEN??? I mean proving that the holds can't function without women's labor so maybe a point for feminism. if you squint. this is not how you do critical reading but I'm sleep deprived

Master Harper Robinton shows up for like 1 scene in this book but he is so clearly Ms McCaffrey's favorite and honestly valid he's also my favorite from my memories of the Harper's hall trilogy which I'm hype to get to I love my girl menolly!! Will I feel the same about her eventually fucking this old man as I did when I was a teen? we will see

Robinton here is my favorite character! Not only is he an incredible musician and composer, he's also a really stand up human being. Great teacher, good friend, my husband ... Oops did I say that aloud lol.

Did you know Pern also came in a puzzle book format?

Crossroads Adventure books were published between 1987 and 1988, and featured two books set on Pern – Dragonharper (1987) and Dragonfire (1988). (Not to be confused with Todd's books, Dragon's Fire and Dragon Harper!)

I've not read either in great detail, but Dragonharper is set during Robinton's first Harper posting (and was released 10 years ahead of The Masterharper of Pern's publication), while Dragonfire takes places after the events of The White Dragon (and published as McCaffrey was writing Dragonsdawn, as the introduction notes!).

Published by Tor, they're credited as 'A Tom Doherty Associates, Inc. Book', and were marketed as "...interactive novels compatible for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons™ level play" – which basically means they use DnD stat names/hit points and have you roll dice to make 'checks' in combination with a choose your own adventure structure. You roll 3d6 and compare the results to your hero's stats, and then move to the page number for your success or failure.

Both contain an introduction/preface by Anne, but only one (Dragonharper) contains an explanation of Pern, which I find interesting.

Dragonfire credits Doug Beekman for the cover art, which is incorrect! Instead, the artwork is by David Cherry, and features in his trading card series (neat!).

Dragonharper, however, does correctly credit Doug Beekman, which is a name you might recognise as a prominent artist for the Conan series!

Both books also feature interior illustrations credited to Todd Cameron Hamilton, the illustrator for The Dragon Lover's Guide to Pern! If you can find them, they're books worth picking up for those illustrations alone. Should I hit up a scanner and post those as well?

You know, this is going to be quite a task because I've never had a canonical character Ship in Pern. I was too busy being obsessive about the gender and sexuality dynamics to actually care about interpersonal relationships.

That girl has serous psychosis, but she's coping so well thanks to all the service animals that can telepathically reality check for her. Would that I were so fortunate*.

*her psychosis was also caused by the profusion of telepathic animals, so really it's a net loss.
