Masterlist of every song and how long its in-game version is
The other day I was bored out of my mind and decided to further fuel my PJSK obsession by going on the wiki and copy pasting every song into a Google doc in order by their in-game length. Some are exclusive to certain servers, and some might be translated a bit wonky because I didn't know whether to use the English translation or not, but other than that everything is pretty straightforward.
The whole list is below!

Ahh, Charles Brook my beloved
1. Me when I first started drawing this doodle dump: Oh golly gee brain, what should we draw first? My brain: Charles on a toddler leash with Susan holding it and looking tired Me: Wowie sounds fun! Yeah this doodle pretty much summarizes their dynamic in the Domestic K-9 AU
2. There's a graphic description of somebody being killed in the next paragraph so feel free to skip over it
To make a long-ish story short, Charles was snooping around the backstage area as his daughter, Lily's, birthday was wrapping up, he found Susan on death's door inside the Banny animatronic and freaks tf out, Bon finds him and they play a terrifying little game of hide and seek, and just as Charles thinks he's fine, WHAM! His faces gets smashed into the floor by Bon, turning his skull into a fine mush and killing him pretty much instantly. Ironically in this AU at least, his death was the most merciful because he at least got the insta-kill treatment rather than suffering through hours or days of agony. I imagine in death, his face kinda sags forward. Kinda like a bag of sand taped to a wood plank.
3. So semi-recently I think, Charles was confirmed to have ADHD, and I saw some doodles by @xzbat-loverzx about one of him stims being clicking a pen and I thought, "Ah yes, perfect". Not really a ton else to this doodle, except I can imagine BSI employees constantly leaving pens and pencils behind whenever they stay at the K-9 Facility
4. This one is my favorite and the one I'm the most excited to explain!
So the first few weeks or so at the K-9 facility was, to put it lightly, a fucking nightmare for Charles (and Rosemary but I'll cover that another time). He was constantly eaten away by guilt, shame, anger, fear, and sadness and generally he was an incoherent, delusional wreck, even on his good days. At some point he managed to get it into his head that he could break out of the facility by body slamming the walls which, A, they are made of solid concrete, and B, even if he did break them, he'd be greeted by an avalanche of dirt. But again, he wasn't really in his right mind at the time
Susan was kind of in a hell of her own during that time considering she'd have to be the one to repair him afterwards. Those episodes are actually the reason the plastic casing on the Boozoo animatronic's upper right arm and the left hand is missing, because at some point they sustained so damage that they just fell off. Susan didn't exactly have a ton of patience for this, and his incoherent babblings whenever she would pull him away would only make her more pissed off. This isn't entire fair to him of course, as he is not at all in his right mind, but in fairness to her, the idiot would slam himself into the walls whenever she took her eyes off of him for even a SECOND, even if it was just to retrieve tools or spare parts from the tool closet.
Eventually what happens is that Susan convinces Bon to hold him down while she goes over to the tool closet and retrieve whatever thing she needs, idk man, I'm not into robotics. When she gets back, Charles is unusually quiet and Bon is trying not to laugh his ass off. Oddly enough, he doesn't take the opportunity to make some snide comment or mock either of them while she works, he stares at the both of them silently.
Once that's done, Susan very begrudgingly thanks him for the help and, with possibly the most shit eating, Cheshire cat, smug as fuck grin, Bon replies, "That's what friends are for." And then she smacks him.

big fan of your romance novel complaint posts (love to see a fellow hater living it up) but i’m also curious if there are any you would recommend? not looking for anything in particular, just would love to hear your thoughts as someone else with nitpicky reading habits and a taste for trash
ok hello. i left you hanging for a FULL week and for that i am sorry but i wanted to be able to have some time to sit down and type out a real answer to which the short version is YES of course there are several that i have enjoyed!! my disclaimer is that i almost solely read gay romance so if you are looking for lesbian or even straight reccs i don't have much for you (although i will put a couple at the end anyway). hopefully something in this list is interesting to you or at least interesting to someone else! links are mostly to goodreads. break bc i'm gonna write too much
-kj charles is one of my fave authors in this genre bc they're all pretty reliable and there's a ton of them. they're all historical fiction and usually there's at least one murder- she's good at keeping a plot going while developing a romance. often supernatural or magical elements. sometimes cults! i've read almost all of the books she's written and have enjoyed them all
-charlie adhara wrote a really incredible werewolf series that i loved, the first of which is the wolf at the door. this is one of the only series i've read which keeps the emotional stakes up through the whole thing & kept me interested in a relationship after it was established bc sooo many series get boring the second the leads get together. i actually read the first book of the spin-off series (a pack of lies) first which is technically possible but i don't recommend bc i was like "wow they're really throwing me in here. i love it" and then i read the first series and i was like "oh i was supposed to know all this stuff." but i actually liked the dynamic between that couple better and i'm suffering every day because the next one still doesn't come out til 2025 and i read it in 2022. also worth noting that this (the original series) is cops-ajacent (~federal special agents~) and one of the characters is really prejudiced at the beginning & imo doesn't have enough character growth before it's waved away but if you can ignore that it's really good. mysteries! werewolves!
-speaking of werewolves (i could suggest several but i'll keep it to two) tj klune's wolfsong ends up at the top of a lot of gay werewolf novel lists (i'm keeping tabs) and there's a good reason. i enjoyed it a lot. made me kind of sad which is always a good sign to me. the writing voice was very fresh and novel at first but i did find it a little grating by the end so i've put off starting the second book in the series (it's also about a different couple which was disappointing) but i will get around to it. i enjoy tj klune in general although his recent stuff has a very different vibe than this and lightning struck heart is very 2015 in a bad way imo
-bone rider by j fally is a standalone that really delighted me. the russian mob? aliens? vaguely western? possession? throuple? it's got it all. very fun
-ok speaking of westerns there's this other series called magic & steam (yes it's steampunk. sorry. it's very silly) that starts with the engineer. a federal agent is sent to a town to apprehend a ~madman engineer~ except he runs into an infamous outlaw in the process. and the outlaw is really sexy. and probably why i enjoyed the series so much. the series also keeps them apart a lot in a way that i enjoy- i love when things take a long time. it's ongoing so this is another one that i keep checking for updates on
-i've read a lot of stuff by nr walker and they tend to be VERY hit or miss for me but one of my faves is evolved which is almost pure smut. it's about a sex robot that gains sentience. what more do i need to say. she also wrote a three-book series about an amnesiac that made me cry cry cry. and her cowboy (australian rancher) series is pretty ok. i could go through a list and tell you which novels of hers aren't worth it and which ones are good; i've read most of them
-salt magic skin magic by lee welch was a big surprise to me. cool magic, good folklore, fairies in there too. historical. big kj charles vibes which makes sense bc she edited it. welch also wrote a book called seducing the sorcerer which i had more mixed feelings about but had magic in it that i think about OFTEN (the horses)- that one's about an imposing sorcerer and a rundown groom cum handyman. and they're in their FORTIES!!! 🥳🥳🥳 (i love when books are not about 23 year olds)
-another one with a magic system i enjoyed was magician by kl noone. this was the first book i read by this author and i liked it but generally i find their books are too "nice" for me. i'm in the middle of one right now that i started months and months ago that i keep trying to go back to and it's sooo rough for me. but this one and the twelfth enchantment are pretty ok
-emily tesh wrote a duology of silver in the wood and drowned country that i loved because i am suuuuch a sucker for a wild man/green man story. really good. haunting! evocative! kj charles has a green man story too which was actually the first thing i read of hers (spectred isle)
-i complained about the monsterfucker book i was reading a while back but despite that i will also recommend the series it's from: lily mayne's monstrous, which starts with soul eater. are they messy? yes. are they repetitive? yes. are the monsters usually disappointingly humanoid? yes. are a lot of them about the military? also yes. so we're starting off on a bad foot. but the world building is interesting and there's LOTS of kinds of monsters and most of them were pretty fun. the one i just read (#7) was the worst one of the bunch though imo. and i have problems with #6. but 1 2 and 5 were good
-ok i should do a quickfire round. honeytrap: about two enemy agents during the cold war. put it off for a long time bc i didn't love that but it takes place over a VERY long period of time which is always interesting to me. zero at the bone: about a hitman who needs to protect a witness to a mob hit. really strong start but fell off a bit in the middle to the end imo.
-you'll notice a lot of these have subgenres of like fantasy historical supernatural etc but here's some regular contemporaries. a lot of these are about sad guys bc those are my favorite. best laid plans: hardware store owner helps a guy fix his house. in the middle of somewhere: same author actually. guy moves to small town to work at a college. mr jingle bells: this is a christmas one. bad title. fake dating. part of the reason i think i liked it so much is because i expected it to be awful but it was actually pretty good. good emotional stakes. published 2021 but feels very 2014. ignore that part. work for it: i rated this five stars but actually don't remember much what it was like. i think they were both really sad which i love. give me big emotions and i eat them right up with a spoon. i should read it again
-OK now i've got some straight & lesbian options. talia hibbert's brown sisters series is good and cute. she also wrote work for it, above. the unhoneymooners is the first real Romance Novel that i read and it really surprised me because i had fun! previously i had kind of written off romance novels as not for me but this kicked off a reading habit that is still going strong (primarily reading romance novels). i read this in 2020 so it might not be as good as i remember. as for lesbian options olivia waite has a series that i enjoyed that's also historical, and a friend of mine really enjoyed delilah green doesn't care (but i haven't read that one myself). and while not really romances i will always be a sarah waters fan: you may recognize her as the author of fingersmith, which is the novel park chan-wook's movie the handmaiden is based on. if you haven't seen the movie or read the book i recommend both. her books are very dramatic lesbian historical fiction; they don't always have happy endings but they're all very good
ok i think that's the end! regular disclaimer that romance is generally not a genre notable for Good Writing so a lot of these are just things i had fun with or just stuck out in my memory for having fun conceits etc. i can't guarantee that any of these are actually good, especially because this is a list solely based on my own taste and bad memory. would love to hear anybody's thoughts and/or if anybody has recommendations for ME!!! this post took me over three hours to write! crazy!

Meme time!! I replaced most of the images from the original. Dr. Jester comes from a strange mix of Archie, Sonic X and game canon. There are so many characters he hasn't met.
I think some of these relationships need more context.
Sonic - His loathsome nephew, potentially. (Prerequisite: Chuckster marriage. 😹) As for curiosity, he knew about Sonic and his extraordinary feats before facing him in battle. This curiosity came with a twinge of fear. He feared the kind of power it was said Sonic could tap into. He simply had to witness it firsthand! And he did.
Unbeknownst to him, he almost killed Sonic in their real first meeting by tossing him and Neon into a lake. Ah, almost.
Tails - Respects his skills as an engineer and his ability to outwit Eggman. Dr. Jester captured him the first time they met. He's Sonic's brother, so technically he should see him as family too. Loathsome nephew #2.
Shadow - Yes, Dr. Jester knew Shadow. Hypothetically, if Shadow came to Dr. Jester claiming to be Eggman's android, Dr. Jester would then respond by giving him a nice gash across the abdomen. Androids don't bleed. But Shadow died so that will never happen. (He doesn't know he's still alive.)
Rouge - Friendly rivalry. They met before the events of SA2. I very much wanted to mark Rouge as a friend but neither can trust the other. Dr. Jester expects betrayal. He still likes her. She has style. And guess what? They both love pretty rocks!
Charmy - A bee that looks like Kandy! And he's alive?! How curious!
Eggman - He feels every emotion for Eggman.
Sir Charles/Uncle Chuck - No notes, just Chuckster!
Dmitri - This relationship is intense but not romantic. I just really like the red circle. It's eye-catching. They're physically affectionate, which might sound odd considering Dmitri is only a cyborg head encased in a glass orb. He does have bionic tendrils though! I call this ship Jestri.
Metal Sonic - Never met. I'm very sad to admit that. Dr. Jester would tease Eggman about Metal Sonic looking like him. "He looks more like me so he must be my son."
Jules - Never met. Again, Chuckster (their relationship) would have to be serious before Chuck even considers introducing Dr. Jester to his beloved family.
E-123 Omega - Dr. Jester doesn't mind his quest for revenge, as long as Omega will allow him to step aside before he starts blasting Eggman's robots.
Chaos - In my own version of Sonic Adventure, Dr. Jester's Chaos (the one from his world) and the canon Chaos became one. A Chaos-Chaos. My Chaos had control of the body first and lost control by Chaos 4. One Chaos was driven by hatred, the other by fear. Dr. Jester wanted nothing to do with them. He skipped the final showdown.
Thank you for reading!
🦔💎🏳️‍🌈
I thought a little more about dear old Uncle Chuck...
In the Archie comics, there were these retcon events that introduced new continuities. In the Post-Super Genesis Wave timeline, Charles is no longer related to Sonic due to SEGA mandates--but he wasn't completely discarded.
I imagine Uncle Chuck would have no memory of Dr. Jester in the new continuity. There would be no Jules, or Dmitri. Dr. Jester would remember what was lost. I could torment myself and my OCs with this sadness. Call it the New Game+!
Nah, I won't do that. It's easier to play along with canon and rewrite some memories.
Dr. Jester cannot lose Charles. Do you understand?

AITA for thinking my friends shouldn't release invasive species onto an alien planet?
So for context, I [20s F] have been living on an alien planet with two other people, my friend [20s M], who we'll call D, and my recently-girlfriend [20's robot], who we'll call R, for the past two years. When we arrived, there were no signs of animal life anywhere on the planet, only plants, and we were supposedly destined to help populate it with fantastical fauna, and D and R have even been working on breeding sapient species. At first I was kinda on board, but I spent more time wandering around sniffing the plants than really helping. Just recently, D decided to initiate a mass extinction event by killing all of the animals they've made so far, and I was sad about that until I noticed all the plants regrowing much, much healthier than before.
D and R have now started making new animals again, and I'm starting to notice a lot of things that were off that I didn't before. You know how grass smells when it's freshly cut to warn nearby grass about grazing animals? The native grass doesn't do that, and I thought it seemed to be regrowing too slowly. I found a book about botany that I think might have belonged to another friend who's still back home [I believe D might have robbed her house before we left for the alien planet], and the more I smelled the words the more I realized that none of the plants here have any defenses against animals eating them. No thorns, no toxins, slow growth, and all their leaves are soft and fleshy. The only kind of chemical I got a whiff of came from those weird walking savannah trees, and I don't think it was for defense. On our respective home planets, grass is completely indigestible, so on a hunch I ate some of the native grass and the was no sign of it in my poop afterwards. All of this confirms to me that metaphorically, the native plants are the helpless flightless island birds that we're unleashing a hoard of invasive cats upon.
I asked R what she thought, but she said that I'd have to talk to D about it since the entire project was his idea. When I did, he got mad at me for trying to spoil the fun and ruin the game, and he asked me if I thought the sapient species he and R were trying to breed didn't deserve to exist. I don't know how to answer that, not that I could before he went off on a lengthy tangent about evolutionary progress and survival of the fittest that I'm pretty sure is a complete misunderstanding of Charles Darwin's work. To make matters worse, R actually agreed with him. Does that mean I'm the asshole?

Tactica-Kingdom 3
Why does it look like P2?
Now it looks like Arena.
Ann looks straight out of Scooby-Doo. 🤣🤣
So we went from the French Revolution to the Meji (?) Restoration/ feudal Japan to school with a door to hell...
Okay 🤠With hair.
They actually call them 🤠 people. I thought they were evil this time around.
They're roasting Ryuji 🤣🤣
He's made of fire?
Back to hell.
Ryuji ain't going to last if he keeps that up.
How the hell are we supposed to hit the enemy from down here? I'm pretty sure nobody brought their go go gadget boots.
Yusuke's willing to be friends with Ann even if she turns into a monster. 🤣🤣 Never change, Yusuke.
Bandaids?
Sad past time.
Class President, I can see that.
I love how Ren manages to look so pissed off but so cute at the same time. 😍😍
Poor Yusuke 🤣🤣
How old is Toshiro?
Ryuji gets some good lines.
I like the hell landscape.
I love how they sometimes speak without moving their teeth. That's a talent.
Is that Yoshida?
I love Ren's little nod.
I love how they seem to open doors with their elbow.
Can Futaba stop with her doom and gloom when you get hit? You could take 10 damage, have plenty of health left and Futaba's screaming about how you're going to die. It reminds me of dancing where if the meter dropped too low, people started yelling. It's horribly stressing.
I love how Haru holds the front of her hat.
My man's a robot?
The battle music can get on your nerves.
Toshiro fought, with what Persona?
I kinda figured that was too easy, but hoped it would be that easy.
Dude had a mental shutdown without having a mental shutdown.
So, he's going to be charged with attempted murder, right?
Only cowards say "if you didn't expose me. I wouldn't have pushed her in front of a train". It has very " I only hit her because she makes me mad". Or "He likes it when I hurt him". vibes
🤬🤬How damn brain dead are people?
I feel sorry for Ryuji. Makoto could've grabbed his ear.
Futaba and Yusuke can make coffee?
Ren doesn't seem like he has a lot of facial expressions. Which sucks, I want to see him react to stuff. At least it's better than Sun/Moon, where you have this stupid 😐😐 while Lillie's mom is getting dragged into the Ultra World. (I mean she does deserve it) but still, at least be shocked or something.
I hate the 🤠 people here.
I love the engine/gun shot star.
That is one freaky shadow.
Is this going in a 4 direction?
Mummy wrappings
Ernesto has a very cool design. (It reminds me of Loki with the colour scheme) {Sometimes women have men's names and vice versa} Probably hell to draw.
I honestly thought Toshiro was going to be the bad guy.
My man floats.
That is fucked up on so many levels. I think I've seen a game like this.
How is this game still T?
5K health!
It looks like EMMA and Neo Featherman mixed together. (I'm not going to count it as the 4th Kingdom till they get to a new location).
Choo Choo Charles flashbacks 🚂🕷
Ryuji almost got run over 🤣🤣
How can Lavenza see to drive?
I honestly thought this happened at the beginning of the game. Morgana's talking nonsense.
🤣🤣 Blue children
🤣🤣 Toshiro's going to get his ass kicked
🤣🤣 Poor Yusuke
I hope there's seatbelts.
15 save slots
Melty people.
So... Maruki?
So Toshiro's mind is the engine?
Who's drawing the pictures?
Lavenza drives about as well as Haru.

The lack of dangan drove me back to checking out fan games sooo here’s a ranking tier for one of my new favorites!!
Read more of my thoughts below if you want! (Warning for spoilers of chapter 1 if you haven’t seen this series):
My absolute favorite is Teruko! She quickly became one of my favorite protags in the fangans and I just LOVE how she’s written! And the fact that she ended up not trusting anyone after the first trial……tbh it’s justified imo. I’d be pissed asf if everyone blamed me for shit I didn’t do. Also I love her design sooo much!!~ such a breath of fresh air the way she’s portrayed
Levi’s my second. Sorry but I love my big softies so much and his design??? Omg please he’s so pretty??✨ I love his talent too it’s very unique. Precious bean I would love to protect him!!
Rose is absolutely my third. AAA SHE’S SO CUTE!! And her strong memory makes her such an mvp. Her talent is also unique too. would also protect her 😭
I’M SO SAD THAT XANDER DIED UGHHH HE WAS MY FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER!! But it’s a dangan game it’s to be expected lmao! Xander was such a good character and I adored his rebellious attitude!! I definitely think he wasn’t be unfaithful to his promise to not kill so I hope that gets explored in the future. (I definitely think an outside force was trying to tell him to kill teruko…maybe the person in the beginning)
Hu and Min are fourth and fifth if I ranked them tbh. I love them both but Min could have been higher than hu if she lived longer tbh. The first trial broke my heart though….I wanna give Min a hug and her execution was hard to watch
Whitt was cool but the way he comforted Charles during his panic attack made me place him much higher. Plus he’s pretty funny Imao
Veronika, Eden, and J are also really good!!! Idk how I would rank them but I like all 3 pretty equally
David and Nico are fine. I don’t have a lot to say on them tbh cuz they’re eh imo but I do like them
Charles got on my nerves (not a fan of the arrogant type characters tbh) but I did feel bad for him during the first trial poor guy. I feel like he’ll get better though cuz I do like his design and talent. Arturo is a bit better imo cuz his quirk about loving celebrity faces is pretty funny.
Ace….Oh god ace. At least he’s funny in a way but jeez he’s annoying. Levi yelling at him made me happy tbh.
I’m sorry but I really don’t Arei. I hate hate HATE her personality and she got on my last damn nerves way more than Ace. Her talent is unique and I like her design and voice, but that’s it.
MonoTV is neat! Kinda wish his voice was more robotic but other than that, love him so much!!
Overall, this is such a super fun series!! The designs and art are so well done and I love the little animated scenes! The writing is on point too I would totally recommend anyone to watch the series fr!!
Edit: oh. Well……this didn’t age well.
I’ll make an update after chapter 2 is fully finished….

“Seb, aren't you freaked out?” Every human who doesn’t work with mimic engineering hates seeing mimics down to their components, it's said to ruin the illusion. Sebastian didn't even hesitate to help him.
“Why would I be? It's just you,” Sebastian replied without much thought, his concentration on shaping the lattice to the gash.
-
Charles is an android who should have had his memory wiped at the start of the season per regulation, Ferrari decided otherwise. Sebastian doesn't know.

Oh don't get me wrong, I think Mick is lovely and a good driver too. But I haven't seen enough of him to actually connect with him, he seems very bland to me most of the time. He almost feels robotic sometimes, with his nice smile and professional answers, almost never showing his raw emotions (except a few times - which I kinda liked lol) it's very sad because this man is only 22 years old, he's sooo young and he acts sooo mature and well behaved (which is a good thing) but I can definetly see why he's so liked in the fandom, he seems very smart, nice and educated. But for me idk we barely know anything about him. I would totally love to hear more of your thoughts about his persona or see videos of him showing a little bit more of his personality, because I am sure he has some of his dad's fire (even tho I feel bad that everyone compares them all the time, Mick is his own person) hope that makes sense, I still think he's very lovely and pretty ofc!! :)
and that is totally fair and valid! i see no reason why everyone should like mick :-) we are lucky to have many drivers -from different series- who have such vastly different personalities, and for the most part each one of us connect to these drivers for different reasons (well i say for the most part because there's also the good list-bad list phenomenon in f1blr that i wont explain rn) but it's nice to know that you wanna know why we like mick!
[ok quick sidenote... that was all i wrote back when i got this ask, but since then, my mental sanity decided to go rogue. so uh... this answer will be a bit more personal :-) if you're not comfortable with that lmk and i'll write a more level-headed reply]
so i had some days to think, well... what do i like about mick schumacher. i mean thinking about personal biases it could be because he's an attractive man of my age who has good manners and is the son of one of my favorite drivers of all time, with a side of gatekeepy emotions because there were very few of us mick fans when i started this blog (i made this blog right after his flop f2 season, so you can understand that while he had many people that generally liked him and wanted to do good, he wasn't the most popular feeder series driver out there). but diving deeper i don't think thats all of it.
i think the most honest answer i can give you as to why i like him is because i relate to him. a lot. i’m shy and sociable in the spaces i know, but i feel the most comfortable in my own home, with my cats (in his case with his dogs, but you know what i mean). i’m cautious and a perfectionist, i like to keep my thoughts to myself. however, and in spite of that, i consider myself a very complex individual. and my biggest fear... is being perceived as boring. simple as that.
so maybe i’m just projecting, giving him a personality that may not exist, because i need people to also know that i’m more than i show in casual spaces.
does that make sense? like i just don't think that being quiet and keeping things to yourself makes you have 0 personality... maybe it just means that you need more of one on one conversations to let your true personality shine through.
the other answer is that maybe i just like bland people to balance out the more heavy personality-wise drivers like charles, lewis and seb sdkjhf
ok and to try and back-track this conversation and not make everything about me lol, i do think that part of his robotic mannerisms comes with being media trained since forever, specially with a press as shark-like as the motorsports one. he's had to be careful all his life, because the second he gets his guard down, he could face awful personal questions, like the state of his dad.
so yeah, i think thats something he could change giving the right environment and with due time.... but let's not forget that last year was his first season in f1 and couldn't prove much in the dog shit of a car that was the haas in 2021 lmao. so all of his questions in were along the lines of "do you think you're improving" "is haas a good team" "do you get along with ___", yada yada yada. and there aren't that many different ways you could answer those without sounding like an automated answering machine. hopefully the car will work a bit better this year and answer some questions about racing and points from time to time!
[also sorry for taking so long in answering i promise this was always on my mind ♡]

I don't know if joris is a bad photographer or Charlotte chooses to post photos in which she only looks good but in the latest post, they look so awkward.
The first picture looks like it's a filler pic between different poses. Charlotte is trying to engage with him, she hugs him in the first and he just touches her arm in a very robotic way.
The second one, she seems excited and expressive and he is just there. He seems like he is ready to take off/ like he is done with taking more pics /
Joris is a good photographer, look at Marta's pic or the ones he takes of Charles. I just think Charlotte isn't really the best model and retouch a lot the pics with filters and things that make it looks low quality.
It's kind of sad tbh because she's extra pretty and if you look at Marta's feed you can see that even simple pics can be pretty but I don't know Charlotte always looks awkward and robotic

Movies I watched this Week - #79
I was finally down to watch Adam Price’s Borgen, the terrific Danish political series, about the first female prime minister of Danmark (created just before Helle Thorning-Schmidt became one in 2011). I planned on binging the whole 40 hours in one week, but it’s too much for one sitting, and I took a break after the first season.
Naturally, I connected mostly to the proximity of all the locations where the action takes place (and which I walked around many times). But I also loved the gorgeous (and terrific actress!) Sidse Babett Knudsen (Photo Above) trying to balance her two roles of a talented leader and a loving wife. Her domestic/love life story line was nice, but predictable. Each episode dealt with one theme (female equality, sovereignty, compromise, etc) wrapped neatly into a tight package. Also, it was good to visit with the many other actors that I’ve now seen on dozens of other Danish films. 8/10.
🍿
The Seven Year Itch, another Billy Wilder mid-50′s sexist farce, about lascivious males “hunting” for loose females while their wives are on summer vacation in Maine. Marylin Monroe as the gorgeous but ditzy “Girl with no name”. Contains the throwaway scene of the subway breeze grate as Monroe’s white dress is blown upwards by a passing train. 3/10.
🍿
2 more from Argentina:
🎦🎦🎦 Official Competition, a Spanish-Argentinian meta-film about film-making, a-la-’Day for night’. With Antonio Banderas and a radiant Penelope Cruz. Starts as a empty caricature which is played out on giant, modern, empty stages, and ends as an hilarious farce and some real heart. 7/10.
🎦🎦🎦 I love it when I serendipitously pick up a random film I never heard of, and it turns up to be a gem. The Argentinian Lina from Lima is such a film. It tells a simple story about an unremarkable poor woman from Peru, who works as an Au-pair for a wealthy family in Chile. She plans a Christmas trip back to Lima to see her teenage son.
Like the lonely protagonist who lives in quiet desperation, the film is unassuming and mundane. But Then! Out of the blue and without warning, whenever she's sad, she starts dreaming in spectacular song and dance numbers, choreographed Busby Berkeley-style to old Peruvian folk songs. The contrast is jarring and emotional. The ordinary-looking middle-age woman turns sultry, sensual and desirable, and her story reminds me of Cleo, the live-in maid in Cuarón’s ‘Roma’. The sad life of a migrant worker.
Wonderful discovery of the week!
🍿
The Valet, a sweet comedy about a Mexican Beverly Hills parking valet who’s hired to impersonate a lover of a famous actress. Generally feel-good story which eventually turns into exaggerated multicultural cliches (Mom’s Mexican food softens even the cruelest of hearts).
With  ‘Marie “Minerals” Schrader’. 5/10.
🍿
2 with Vanessa Redgrave:
🎦🎦🎦 Howards End, the Merchant-Ivory old fashioned period piece about class and real estate in Edwardian Britain. I usually don’t like costume melodramas, and in spite of the pedigree of this turn of the century adaptation, I didn’t care for this one either. Pretty set design & cinematography and outdated class politics.
🎦🎦🎦 The whistleblower, with Rachel Weisz, Monica Bellucci, David Strathairn and Nikolaj Lie Kaas. A true story about a Nebraska policewoman, who worked for the UN Peace Corps in Bosnia, and uncovered a sex trafficking and sexual slavery conspiracy facilitated by DynCorp employees and many at the UN itself. But the sadistic violence and brutal ugliness of the subject matter was translated into an grim and depressing movie. And the police procedural script was predictable, clichéd and utterly unoriginal. 2/10.
🍿
Brian and Charles, a quirky Welsh production by a first-time director. It’s about an oddball inventor who lives in a tiny village, and who, like Dr. Frankenstein, builds a seven-feet humanoid washing-machine robot. “Charles” has a Stephen Hawking voice and a childish but benevolent nature. Amusingly ‘different’. 5/10.
🍿
Last week I saw, without any prior for-knowledge, Anne Hui’s masterful ‘A simple life’. I vowed to seek her many other films. Sadly, her latest Love after love was hugely disappointing. This gorgeously-filmed 1940′s period drama was pure hokum. A boring, cliched soap opera of the style that is popular with (mostly female) Chinese audiences (just like the Spanish Telenovelas, Korean soaps, etc.). The story was incomprehensible to me, and completely without emotional attachment – unlike this prior 'A Simple Life', which was emotionally complex and nuanced. 2/10.
I will still try some of her other films, but heck!
🍿
5 Re-watches:
🎦🎦🎦 Conspiracy, an understated dramatization of the Wannsee Conference from January 20, 1942, where 15 senior Nazi officials met to define and codify the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question", the bureaucratic nature of the genocide. With Kenneth Branagh as Heydrich and Stanley Tucci as Eichmann. Based on the only actual transcript from the 90 minutes meeting, it must have been impossible to do right: Showing how the ‘banality of evil’ happens, they nearly had to glamorize the individuals who signed off on the plan.
I wish it was much more “realistic”, describing the proceedings as they really might have happened and less ‘dramatic’. I read that a 1984 German film, Die Wannseekonferenz, was better. 5/10.
🎦🎦🎦 The World’s End, a pub crawl in the midst of an alien invasion, the third of the ‘Cornetto trilogy’. In my mind I adored Edgar Wright‘s output (never seen ‘Scott Pilgrim’ yet). But thinking back, while ‘Hot Fuzz’ is one of my all-time favorite comedies, the rest are actually unremarkable.
- The Marmalade Sandwich!
🎦🎦🎦 “... Jahé means 'hello'. I can say 'hello' in a lot of different languages. Not yours, but a lot of them...”
Happy to have introduced Midnight Run to Ahmed, and to enjoy it one more time. Still a perfect 10/10 in my book, without a single false scene. And right in the mid-point of the movie (never realized that before) the silent embrace with the daughter he hadn’t seen in 9 years, which was devastating. Extra sauce to Danny Elfman's score.
🎦🎦🎦 Thief, Michael Mann’s atmospheric feature film debut (!), and precursor to ‘Heat’. With moody Tangerine Dream pulsating score. Shout-out to the long coffee-shop confession scene. Willie Nelson must have acted in dozens and dozens of films beside this one.
RIP, James Caan!
🎦🎦🎦 Working Girl, Mike Nichols’s corporate Cinderella romance, about late-80′s office politics, female empowerment, and especially about giant hair and shoulder pads. Haven’t seen it since then, and was surprised to see how well it stayed. With Sigourney Weaver, Alec Baldwin and creepy Kevin Spacey as three separate villains, and with Carly Simon’s distinct ‘Let the river run’ theme song. 7/10
🍿
Ocean’s Twelve, one of the worst films I’ve ever seen (?). Never having seen Soderbergh’s Ocean Trilogy until last week, and liking the first part-Eleven OK, I jumped into the sequel, and hated everything in it. A fake, empty, self-indulgent money-grabbing exercise. 1/10.
🍿
First watch: Hot shots!, a 1991 ‘Top Gun parody’, with all my favorite 90′s stars, Charlie Sheen, Cary Elwes, Jon Cryer and Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. (/sarcasm). 2/10

bi-ish weekly update
time sure passes huh. meant to do one last week but I wrote like 5000 words on Wednesday instead, and I’m not really sure what happened yesterday but maybe Thursday is my new day for these
listening: two for the price of one this week since I’m excited about both of them. first of all, obviously, is the Sangfielle theme by Jack de Quidt because it’s time for a new season of Friends at the Table. I love their description of this season’s music
Tumblr media
the other thing I’ve been listening to is the new album from one of my fave bands, You’re Welcome from A Day to Remember. this is by far not the most musically interesting or complex song on the album but it is about, as far as I can tell, a bad breakup with a vampire and I love it for that just on principle, but also it’s fun! a fun pop punk-esque bop about breaking up with a vampire!
youtube
reading: since last time when I talked about many romance novels I was reading, I mostly just read more romance novels because sometimes that is all the brain can handle. shout out to KJ Charles for writing a historical romance with a nonbinary main characters, you really do love to see it. I appreciate that she puts trans characters in her books, and I hope that someday she writes one with a trans man as a main character, because that truly would be a book targeted directly at me.
I’ve also been reading the Kate Kane, Paranormal Investigator series by Alexis Hall (author of Affair of the Mysterious Letter, a weird fantasy queer Sherlock Holmes retelling that absolutely fucking slaps, highly recommend).
Tumblr media
this is his author bio from the Kate Kane books, which really just sets the tone and also. what a fucking life goal
Tumblr media
anyway. series starts with Iron & Velvet which is currently on sale, which is why I bought it, and it also fucking slaps. I’m like halfway through the last book right now but they have all been good and fun. Kate is like. archetypal disaster p.i. but done in an interesting way (i.e. the narrative actually addresses the depression and the alcoholism in a way that I personally really appreciated), and also pretty much every woman in the ~supernatural community she encounters is an ex or someone she will flirt/hook up with at some point, which is an accurate representation of every irl queer space I’ve ever been part of. she dates a vampire for a while. hot morally questionable vampire lady. the vampire power structure names positions after tarot cards it’s very fun and sexy and tailored specifically toward my interests. also she lives in the same part of London as my ex-girlfriend so it’s. fun to recognize place names and be like. oh I went there on a date once huh
watching: started watching Turn A Gundam because a twitter friend recommended it as being fun and also very different then any other Gundam series and they were right on both counts. the premise of it is ‘what if a bunch of people went to live on the moon and some people stayed on earth, the moon people got real into super advanced technology and the earth people are larping the 19th century, and now the moon people want to come back’ so there’s a fun mix of visual styles. would love to see serious analytical writing on this show by someone more versed in discussing indigeneity/colonialism than me though because there are things that I’m a little bit hmmm at but I don’t know enough to be able to explain why or know if that’s the right response to have
Tumblr media
don’t know what’s up with the dude on the left’s sunglasses but my friend has promised me the fashion choices only get weirder
I know about the ‘wow cool robots’ meme but some of the mech designs are very cool and visually distinct both from each other and from the standard blocky humanoid shape that lots of mechs are, so that’s fun to see. and they’re all different sizes too, which for me at least makes it easier to get a sense of the scale of the conflict/threat. when they’re all the same size it’s easy for me to forget they’re like 40 feet tall but when some of them are 40 feet and some of them are like 10 feet it’s a lot easier to be like. oh. oh shit. these are big and destructive and scary as hell
Tumblr media
there are mini versions of this big mech that are like. the size of one of its feet
also there’s some fun stuff about how the way society relates to a mech and what a mech is used for can change over time, which is part of what is maybe inspiring me to get back into trying to write games, because between Turn A and the fic I was writing about Integrity Friendsatthetable I was like. hey what if a hack of The Ground Itself by Everest Pipkin, a game about a place changing over time, except instead of a place it’s a mech
playing: finished Knife of Dunwall finally! please clap! I was kinda half-expecting not to keep to low chaos in the last mission because there are so many overseers but I did it! I did do a bunch of accidentally getting into fights, killing a bunch of people, and then reloading an earlier save so I could go back and not kill those people but it’s fine. anyway. fun game, fun level once I got the hang of it, and I do feel like I accomplished something a lil bit difficult so that’s a nice feeling. definitely harder than the main game. also, very sad about Billie and gay for Delilah. she shows up just to threaten you and then disappears again, and I think that’s pretty hot of her. also love the narrative parallels of having the choice to spare Billie and then the game ending with Corvo about to decide whether to spare Daud or not. I just think that’s neat
making: made some Thai green curry last week from this recipe, which was tasty and not too hard to make, but has just enough specialty ingredients to make it a lil bit too expensive to make too often. our grocery store only ever has lemongrass when we’re looking for things that look kinda like lemongrass but aren’t, and didn’t have any when we need it so we just used extra lemongrass paste and lime juice for the lemongrass, and for the kaffir lime leaves, which we were also supposed to substitute with lemongrass but. it’s fine it was still tasty
Tumblr media
writing: a lot somehow, although it’s been over two weeks since last time I did one of these so I guess that makes sense. I wrote a couple of things for 15 Days of Friends at the Table, including Broun, Milli, and Thisbe cottagecore roommates, Clem and Gucci bickering/flirting, and an extended dream sequence that makes me very sad about Integrity (I’m very proud of the last one, I know it has a very small target audience because Sokrates/Integrity is very much a rarepair in an already small fandom, there are 6 works in the tag, 4 of them are by me, 2 of them are by the same other person, and one of those is a gift for me so. it’s mostly just me, but I think I wrote something pretty good)
also meant to write more for Persona 5 Girls Week, although so far I’ve only written one thing, a quick fluff fic which for once requires very little knowledge of the source material. meant to write something for today’s prompt but instead I had two job interviews and then cooked dinner for my household so that probably will not happen and I will probably watch more Gundam instead

RIP Blue Sky Studios...
Established in February 1987... Iconic commercials, early innovation in CGI, packed to the brim with top talent, a rare East Coast-based house, and one of the first studios in a post-Don Bluth age to really challenge Disney and Pixar in the feature animation field...
Gone.
Once a subsidiary of 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Company had them since early 2019 after the acquisition of their parent company. It looked as if Disney was going to keep them around, despite already having two powerhouse animation studios making family features for them. I wondered back in the day if Disney could rebrand Blue Sky as a sort-of outre little studio that did more experimental, quirky fare as opposed to the more digestible works of Disney Animation and Pixar.
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, signs were rather troubling. Despite a management change, you had the rather ho-hum marketing for SPIES IN DISGUISE. To me, Disney sort-of let that one disappear between FROZEN II and STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER. I found SPIES IN DISGUISE to be a fun little movie, with a timely pacifist message and memorable gags. Sadly, it did not make its money back. Even more troubling was the constant delaying of NIMONA, an adaptation of Noelle Stevenson’s webcomic of the same name from FEAST and PEARL director Patrick Osborne. From the rumblings I’ve heard, it looked to be an innovative CG film and a next-level family film in general. Like a next SPIDER-VERSE. It was to be released January 14, 2022. 70% of the film was completed by this point... It is no longer a reality, Blue Sky is done...
450+ animators and staffers out of a job during an awful worldwide crisis...
Why couldn’t The Walt Disney Company just sell off Blue Sky Studios to a distributor looking for more animation to stock up on? If they didn’t need more than two animation studios (see the shuttering of their own Disneytoon Studios in early 2018), why shutter them and wait so long to do so? I know that absorbing competition and killing it is nothing new, but this is **expletive** for a multitude of reasons. Multiple talent out of a job, more movies and work squashed, a nearly-completed film likely dead. (It would be great if it was instead on the market, so that someone could snatch it up and complete it, but we shall see...)
Blue Sky Studios were no slouches. ICE AGE established them, big time. In fact, I’d say they helped show the industry that the features world wasn’t just Disney’s game anymore. Disney had seen rivals in feature animation in the past, notably Don Bluth and Ralph Bakshi, but they continued through the decades while Bluth and Bakshi’s feature opportunities waned. Blue Sky, alongside DreamWorks and a fledgling Sony Pictures Animation, changed that, and they were here to stay. And it’s quite sad that Disney had to acquire this notable studio and shut them down, they would’ve thrived elsewhere because of the success of their previous work and the amount of talent they have/had over the years.
They have a pretty distinct body of work, too. ROBOTS, HORTON HEARS A WHO!, RIO, EPIC, THE PEANUTS MOVIE, FERDINAND, SPIES IN DISGUISE. Some of them, I’d argue, were quite innovative. ICE AGE stabbed at cartoony, Looney Tunes-esque humor and visual design. The work in that movie rung more Warner Bros. than it did Disney or something more naturalistic in design. Their later work embraced that kind of outlook as well, but you started seeing other studios doing this as well: DreamWorks with MADAGASCAR, Sony Animation with OPEN SEASON and CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, and so on. The antithesis to the ever-more-realistic Pixar styles. Then Blue Sky just straight up redefined the computer animated feature with THE PEANUTS MOVIE, which not only kept the comic strip aesthetic of Charles Schulz’s iconic characters and world, but adapted them to a computer animated world while doing something new in the process. PEANUTS MOVIE, along with similar pictures like THE BOOK OF LIFE and CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS, are indeed stepping stones to SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE and what lies beyond that feature. In short, Blue Sky played a big part in computer animation showing that it didn’t just have to look like Pixar movies, or most other computer animated works that were out at the time of ICE AGE’s early 2002 release.
Who knows where that could’ve all gone. NIMONA looked to be something new and exciting, something to really push things forward and widen the computer animation canvas. A musical called FOSTER also sounded like it had potential. When TWDC acquired 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios), Fox Animation in general had several animated films in development, hoping to branch out beyond their one studio... All of that seemingly died after the Disney acquisition, with only Blue Sky and a couple of Fox primetime TV-showed based movies (i.e. THE BOB’S BURGERS MOVIE, another - and inevitable - SIMPSONS picture) left. Now Blue Sky is gone. More animation, gutted. And for what? Disney didn’t have to do this...
It’s even more egregious when you consider where Disney was in 1991... As opposed to now, 2021...
Think of this... Under the controversial Michael Eisner, The Walt Disney Company was willing to sink a massive amount of money into a project that had already been cancelled. Said project was given to blockbuster king Steven Spielberg, hit director Robert Zemeckis, and animation mastermind Richard Williams. This was not even a few years after Disney was a quiet establishment being circled by corporate raiders that could’ve ended them for good... And what came of it. WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT. An innovative animation-live action hybrid movie for a more adult audience. One of the biggest films of 1988, a bonafide blockbuster that Disney hadn’t seen in years, and more than lit the fuse of animation’s 2nd Golden Age.
Then, in 1990, a former animator of theirs turned big-time director realizes that a short story he wrote while at the company was still owned by them. That man was Tim Burton, and he expressed interest in revisiting that poem. A studio was set up, with similarly outre director and former Disney animator Henry Selick taking the helm. The result was an innovative stop-motion film that leaned more towards horror and German expressionism than something like BEAUTY AND THE BEAST did. The result was THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS in 1993. A respectable hit then, an iconic classic today. Without NIGHTMARE, would have ever gotten future stop-motion efforts like CHICKEN RUN and everything Laika has made?
Finally, in 1991, Disney makes a three-picture deal with a small computer graphics studio based out of Marin County. One of their main guys was a former Disney animator as well, similarly outed for being too ambitious. Their plan? Make the world’s first all computer-animated movie. That studio was Pixar, their first movie was TOY STORY. Need I say more?
The Disney of today would’ve never in these three instances. Blue Sky could’ve been their chance to really make some kind of a splash in a post-SPIDER-VERSE world. Various shorts made at Disney Animation (including Osborne’s own FEAST) suggested this, and some Pixar shorts as well... But nothing really came of this. In terms of features being put out by Disney Animation and Pixar, only parts of MOANA, INSIDE OUT, and SOUL put this kind of thing in a long-form format. Blue Sky, who operated on smaller budgets, could’ve been their arm for more experimental feature animation. I say this because while Disney doesn’t need to hog up animation, Blue Sky was owned by them, and I felt the best way to go about this was to re-establish them as a more experimental studio. Make the most of it, you know? But no, they had to shut it all down.
When a studio shuts down, I feel a chunk of the animation world is just broken right off... While some of the artists are apparently being welcomed into various Disney houses, it sucks to see a studio with its own identity and output gone. Of course, my hope is that everyone employed there will have somewhere to go by April (when the studio shuts down completely) and that maybe, just maybe a new studio could be formed up from the remains. (Think Don Bluth setting up shop upon his departure from Disney in 1979.) Somebody has to get their happy ending, right? I know it’s moot asking for such a thing in this hellscape business of massive octopus conglomerates engulfing everything into their eight tentacles, but...
I wish everyone involved well, and that they’ll prosper afterwards. I certainly hope the 3/4 completed NIMONA doesn’t remain unfinished. (Netflix? Someone?) I hope to see some good come out of this...

Sends roses to every country on Valentine’s day
Sends them presents as well on Christmas
He does it all anonymously
Francis is more sad than he looks
He loves and apprciates people but even he, the god of beauty gets hate sometimes.
He ignores it, it doesn’t mean some of it doesn’t make him cry when he is alone
In England’s contacts he is saved as - Bagutteman
He sometimes smokes but a lot less than Louis
Francis does wear a barrette. Five of them. In different colours.
He is a make up youtuber sometimes and reviews clothes and is more popular than James Charles.
He lookes beautiful with make up and a dress as well, even though he is hairy
Marriane looks beautiful even dressed as man, altough she tries to hide her big chest

He and Marriane have worked at a wedding dress shop and give advices to the brides.
Francis has worked at a museum, where you could see some paintings of him
He gives money to the poor
His head has been chopped off once during one of his revolutions
He is entirely different man at a revoltion. Prefers to not talk about it.
Is not afraid to walk in high heels to a meeting.
Argues with England a lot and some of their arguments turn into fights.
Has left bouquets of roses in front of his doorstep more than once, leaving the brit wondering who did this, if it was a prank or not
England has thrown the flowers but one time he got them inside
Francis has watched all of this from afar, and the last time he left, smiling.
He cries when he remembers Jeanne.  He has cried when he saw that tourtist in his country who looks like her as well. England was at America to see him and mostly to talk about business, after that. America complains to England how weird Francis has acted around the girl and how he must have bored her. England decided to phone the french man only to realize that he was choking on his tears.
‘‘She was beautiful-” he said “And there wasn’t a single scar on her, Anglettere!”
This pulled some heart strings in him, making him sigh. He asked him
“Would you like me to come over?”
But Francis refused. “Non, I would like to be alone for now.”
England nods even though the other doesn’t see him and puts the phone away, feeling really, really guilty every time Jeanne is mentioned.
Francis doesn’t use cheap perfume.
He doesn’t like ketchup much. Mayonese is ok.
Is not scared of Russia
Talks to Canada frequently
Talks to Seychelles frequently
Dances with women at festivals
Competes with Germany over who’s bread is better
Reads a lot of poetry and sends hand written letters to every country, just because he feels like it.
His relationship with Switzerland is ok
For him, it is love him or hate him. And hate is a pretty strong word, so...dislike.
Literally he is a sweetheart and a gentleman, how can anyone hate that man?
His voice is smooth
He is kind and understanding.
Can be manipulative most of the time
Can drink lots of wine.
Is a voice actor for children’s animations due to his smooth voice.
Has been a teacher.
Used to have asmr channel
Loves big and cozy clothes
Is not as afraid of technology and computers as people think.  He just doesn’t like  the idea of being watched or listened to, or a robot in his house sassing him back
He has an old phone. Rarely uses it so it isn’t scratched. Phones are for talking...right...RIGHT?
Has been dared to cut his hair once and never has cut it off so short ever again
Keeps his old pirate clothes in the attic, Just like England. But unlike England he doesn’t re-wear them to live back in the old days. His past was filled with glory but also blood. It is better to live in the present, yes?
Adores Japan
Adores almost everyone honestly. People are are art
Is a morning person
But can be a night owl
Drinks more tea than coffee
Calls England, Anglettere a lot. But calls him Arthur even more, because it indicates closer relationship. And well you can’t really call the other person a country name in a taxi or at the shop.
Likes to wear big puffy dresses
He speaks in his native language when sad or agnry
Marriane has been in ad  for shampoo in France.
She buys clothes for Alice and puts them in a big box, Puts lots of tape on it and covers it, then sends it to her. Alice likes them but would never say it out loud.

In It For The Long Haul - Chapter 3
Warnings for Violence. Claudia’s POV.
Claudia leaned against a wall of the Rexford as she waited for MacCready. They had finished at the Castle with just enough time to get back to Goodneighbor. The ultimate goal was to get back to Sanctuary, but it was too far away to reach by nightfall. So they settled at the Rexford for the night. Staying the night there was decidedly better than some random abandoned building.
She thought about MacCready as she waited for him. He was not what she had been expecting when the ghoulified Mayor Hancock had steered her in his direction. Sure, he acted like how she would expect a mercenary to act, for the most part, but she was not expecting him to be so young. It was a little jarring to her. It was like seeing what she could have become if she had grown up in the wastes.
“Boss,” MacCready said in greeting, shaking her from her thoughts.
“Ready?” she asked.
“When you are.”
Her nose wrinkled when she stepped out of the hotel. Goodneighbor was not exactly the best smelling place in the world. At least it was safer than the ruins that surrounded the place.
“I gotta ask, boss, why are we goin’ to this place? It’s on the edge of the Commonwealth,” he complained, trying to mask it as a question.
They had only been traveling together for a day, and she had already noticed how much he tended to complain. They usually came in the form of sarcastic or backbiting comments. She had learned that the hard way when she made him help clean up the Castle.
“It’s… where I live when I’m not on the road, I guess?”
“Seems a little far away to be helping people,” he muttered.
“There’s actually two allied settlements pretty close by, so it’s not as bad as you think,” she said, “Besides it’s safe, and there should be clean drinking water available. For free.”
He seemed to lighten up a bit at the promise of something free, even if he was not the one paying for it. She figured it was because it meant she could afford more ammunition.
The area around Goodneighbor was eerily peaceful. She closely followed him as he weaved through the ruined buildings. He paused every now and then to listen and watch for threats. They got to the Charles River in a surprising amount of time. He led them down the river all the way to the train tracks that spanned across it. It was not the most direct route, but it was certainly one of the safest.
When they got to the tracks Claudia took point. She looped around the farm that the tracks ran through, wary of the robots that were working there. From there they made their way along them until they reached the newly established settlement of Starlight.
A lone figure sat working at a water pump. When he noticed the pair, he reached for his gun. In response MacCready readied his rifle.
“Who are you, and what do you want?” the man demanded.
“Put your gun down, MacCready,” Claudia whispered.
He looked at her as if she was crazy, but followed her orders.
“Don’t worry, we’re friendly. I’m Claudia Flynn, General of the Minutemen. We’re just passing through,” she said calmly.
Her words seemed to soothe him. He still looked a bit wary, but he lowered his gun.
“General, huh? Sorry I pulled my gun on ya, especially since I should be thanking you for an opportunity like this.”
“It’s quite alright. It’s a rough world out there,” she said with a small smile.
“Well, you’ve given me a decent place to set up, so if you and the Minutemen ever need anything just ask.”
She nodded, “And if you need anything just ask. There’s a place called Sanctuary to the Northwest. Just head there.”
“I will, and thank you again, for this place.”
“No problem,” she smiled. She shot a look at MacCready. He was watching the man warily as they walked across the cracked pavement. His rifle was ready to be fired at a moment’s notice.
“He pulled a gun on us, and you just let him go?” he muttered.
“He didn’t know who we are,” she shrugged, “besides this kinda stuff is going to happen a lot. I’ve noticed people aren’t quick to trust. Even when you’re trying to help them.”
“Noticed? No shi- kidding, boss. If you haven’t noticed the wasteland isn’t like that vault you came from. You’re gonna get killed if you aren’t suspicious of everyone.”
She frowned at him. She could handle the complaining. The more sarcastic comments could be funny. She could not, on the other hand, handle him treating her like she was an idiot. She was new to the world, not a dunce.
She rolled her eyes in response.
“Yeah, I noticed,” she said sarcastically, “I’m not an idiot you know? Just new to the Commonwealth. If you have an issue with it you can leave.”
His eyes widened at that, seemingly caught off guard by her sudden change of tone. She hoped he did not take her up on her offer. At least not until she had someone else to follow her across the wasteland.
“No, no. Just trying to offer some advice,” he said, verbally backing off.
She relaxed slightly. She was thankful he did not walk off on her, but she wondered why. She decided not to ask, because she figured whatever the reason was it was good enough for her.
She led the way through Concord. As they got closer to Sanctuary she relaxed more and more, but she did not let her guard down. She doubted any raiders would be there for a while, but the wildlife was a different story.
As they crossed the bridge that spanned the river that wound around the island Sanctuary sat on, MacCready completely stopped walking.
“What is this place?” he asked, almost completely in awe.
She raised an eyebrow at him. His tone seemed out of character from the very little that she knew about him, but it also made her feel a bit sad. When she looked at the dilapidated houses all she saw was the ghost of a once beautiful neighborhood. A painful reminder of a past she was still avoiding coming to terms with.
“Sanctuary.”
“A bit on the nose, don’t you think?”
“It always has been,” she said wistfully. She started walking again before he could respond. He had to lightly jog to catch up to her again.
After a few steps off of the bridge Dogmeat bounded up to her. His tail wagged at a frankly ridiculous speed. Seeing how happy he was to see her made her feel warm and fuzzy inside.
“Hey, boy. Did you miss me?” she asked as she scratched just behind his ear, causing him to thump his foot on the ground.
She smiled up at them, saying, “This is Dogmeat. He helped me clear out Concord and Corvega.”
“You cleared out Corvega?” he asked with wide eyes.
“Yeah. Given how easy it was, I’m surprised no one else had,” she said straightening back up. The moment she did Dogmeat started to aggressively sniff MacCready. She tried to stifle her laughter at his worried look.
“Should I be worried?” he asked.
She shook her head, “He’s just trying to make sure you’re not an enemy is all.”
When Dogmeat seemed to be satisfied with his assessment he bounded off back towards the heart of Sanctuary. She watched him run off with a smile.
“Seems like you passed the test.”
“Yay me,” he said sarcastically.
As they got closer to the house that had the workbenches stationed outside of it they caught Sturges’s attention.
“Hey, General!” he greeted enthusiastically, looking up from the turret he was working on. The table littered with various tools and pieces of the turret. A protective mask was pulled up on top of his head instead of covering his face.
“Hey, Sturges.”
“I hope you’re here ‘cause things went well at the Castle,” he said hopefully.
“Yeah. I can say with full confidence that the mirelurk infestation has been dealt with. Oh, and the old radio station is up and working again,” she said triumphantly.
“Looks like things are finally startin’ to look up, thanks to you.”
She smiled awkwardly at the praise, but before she could say anything he changed the subject.
“I see you’ve made a new friend too.” he gestured towards MacCready, who had been standing behind her silently.
“oh, yeah, this is MacCready,” she said, turning towards him, “hes going to be helping me make my way across the Commonwealth.
“Well, it’s nice to meet you. A friend of General’s is a friend of mine.”
MacCready merely nodded in acknowledgement. She frowned at him.
“How long do you think you’ll be stickin’ around for?”
“I don’t know,” she answered, “until someone needs us, I guess?”
“So, not very long then.”
She sighed. She had been hoping they could get some rest before they had to go somewhere else. The journey from Goodneighbor had not been hard, but it had been long.
“Did someone come by while we were gone?”
“Yeah. One of the Abernathy’s. Said they needed some help with raiders. They’ve got a farm just south of here built around an old electrical tower. Can’t miss it.”
“I know where that is. Thanks for passing along the message, Sturges.”
“No problem. Also, where’s Preston?”
“Oh. He stayed behind at the Castle. Wanted more people to be there before he left.”
He nodded thoughtfully before beginning to work on the turret again.
She turned back to MacCready.
“I want to repack my bag before we head out,” she explained.
“You sure we should head out today, boss? Sun’s gonna start setting soon.”
“We should have enough time to at least find a place for the night.”
“If you say so,” he grumbled.
She rolled her eyes in response as she headed towards her house. Inside she emptied her pack of everything she did not need and refilled the things she did. She noticed he did not follow her inside. She looked over her shoulder to find him awkwardly leaning against the door frame.
“You know you can come inside, right?”
“Don’t want to intrude on your space, boss.”
She chuckled, “My space is the room on the right side at the end of the hallway. Besides, I’m having you stay across the hall, so this,” she gestured to the room, “now belongs to both of us.”
“Why? There are other houses.”
“True, but that’s the only room that has a bed that hasn’t been claimed yet…” she paused, “...it’s also cleaner than the other rooms.”
She turned away from him, so that he could not see her struggling to keep her composure. It had been her grandmother’s room before the bombs. She had torn that room apart the day after she woke up. She had completely gutted the room of everything except a dresser and bed that were both in surprisingly good condition. That room being in a complete state of disarray was the exact opposite of what it had been before the war, and it hurt her too much to look at it like that.
“Fair enough,” he said walking over to the counter where she was sorting through supplies.
“I have extra supplies if you need anything,” she said. Her voice was far weaker than she had intended. Out of the corner of her eye she saw him raise an eyebrow at her, but he did not comment on it.
“You have any bullets?”
“Not the kind you use.”
“Then I’m good.”
When she was done packing they were on the road again. Claudia led the way through the tall grass. MacCready made snarky comments as they walked about it. Fortunately for him, she thought some of them were amusing. It seemed to her that he knew that he made his constant complaining more bearable if he made it funny.
They made it to Abernathy Farm in just over half an hour. As they walked closer to the house they were greeted by a man leaning against the railing of the porch.
“That’s close enough, strangers. We’re a peaceful farm. We don’t want any trouble.”
“It’s ok,” Claudia said, “We’re friendly. Not looking to cause any trouble.”
“If you say so. But be warned, we’re armed here, so don’t try anything. Let me tell ya, farmin’ ain’t easy. Out in the field, all day, every day? And every moment of it spent watching your back.”
“Farmin’s hard work.”
“Won’t argue with that. Blake Abernathy, you new to these parts?”
“Uh, no. Not exactly,” she answered hesitantly.
“Well it’s nice to see a new face. What about you, ever think about working the land?”
“I’ll probably give a try some day.” She was not sure if that was a lie or not.
“Well, good look to you then. Word of advice though. If you do start up a farm, be ready to deal with the raiders. Why do all the hard work when you can just take what you want at gunpoint?” he demanded.
“That’s why we’re here actually. I’m Claudia Flynn, general of the Minutemen, here to help,” she explained. It was weird introducing herself like that. It was only the second time she had done it, it felt just as odd. She figured she would get used to it with time.
Mr. Abernathy nodded carefully, before carrying on. His voice was pained.
“The last time those raiders hit us, my daughter Mary tried to stand up to them. Now, she’s buried out back of the house. Only twenty-one years old, and they shot her down without a thought. That’s why we need the Minutemen back, and the sooner, the better.”
Her heart broke at that. She knew better than anyone what it was like to lose a loved one, but thought losing a child was a whole other type of pain.
“My God… I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine what it’s like to lose a child.”
“I hope I never have to experience that feeling,” MacCready murmured from behind her. His voice was barely audible, and sounded almost sorrowful. She wanted to ask him if he was alright, but she knew that that would be crossing a boundary that should not be crossed.
“I… I don’t have much to offer, but those raiders that killed Mary took her locket too. It’s been in Connie’s family for generations. It would mean a lot to us if you could get it back for us.”
“Don’t worry,” she assured him, “we’ll get that locket back for you. And we’ll take care of those raiders. Just tell us where to go.”
“Thank you. There stationed at a place called Satellite Olivia to the northwest of Concord.”
“Alright, we’ll head there now.”
“Thank you again.”
As they walked away MacCready piped up, “You know, boss, we could have saved a lot of time if you had said you’re a Minuteman from the start? Why did ya let him drone on about farming?”
“Customer service?” she shrugged. Truth be told, she liked learning about people.
“Who cares? We’re savin’ their a- butts.”
“True, but we need support from them, and they’ll support us if we are kind to them,” she explained in an exasperated tone.
He grumbled something, but she could not make out what he said, so she took it as a sign that that conversation was done for the time being. She began to wonder if him being an ex-gunner had anything to do with his attitude. They definitely were not the nicest people in the world if she was to go off of what she had heard, but they sounded more evil than rude. She knew that greed could be a hell of a motivation, but she doubted anyone that bad would want to join up with a Minuteman. He did not even seem to be that bad of a person either so far. Sure, he was no saint, but he also did not seem to be a walking pile of human garbage either. He was grey, and as annoying as it could be, she could work with grey.
The sound of gunshots in the distance shook her from her thoughts. They were coming from the satellite as they drew nearer to it. It seemed as though MacCready read her mind. Before she could even get out a word to tell him what to do he lifted up his rifle and stared through the scope.
“Two raiders and an attack dog. Looks like they’re fighting… molerats?” he relayed back to her.
As soon as he finished speaking an explosion sounded through the air.
“Uh nevermind,” he said lowering his gun, “who the heck makes a suicide vest for a molerat?”
She looked at him in pure confusion.
“Did I-” she started.
“Yeah, you heard me right,” he interjected.
“Well… less work for us then,” she said walking off toward the bunker.
Inside they quietly walked down the stairs, and made sure they did not trigger the tripwire at the bottom. They wanted to make sure they had the element of surprise on their side.
When they encountered the first raider, he was in a room by himself with his back to them. Not wanting to draw attention to themselves yet, Claudia quietly sneaked up behind him, and planted her knife in his neck. He made a strangled noise, but it was not enough to alert the others.
The next room was more of an issue. Claudia peaked into the room without being noticed. There were four raiders inside, and one had a minigun. She motioned to MacCready to come towards her. When he was in position she mouthed ‘minigun’ to him. He knew what to do without further instruction. He poked his rifle through the doorway, lining up the shot. The raiders noticed this, but before they could do anything he hit the woman wielding the minigun right between the eyes. Together, Claudia and MacCready dove into the room, and took out the remaining raiders. When they went down, as if on a cue, the remaining inhabitants of the bunker were taken down.
“Do you think that’s all of them?” she asked. She tried to shake the way killing the raiders made her feel. She knew it was the right thing to do, but she was still getting used to that fact.
“Should be.”
“Then let’s start looking for that locket.”
“Sure thing boss.”
She turned to the small toolbox at her feet, and opened it. Sure enough the locket laid inside, glinting at her in the dull light. She picked it up. She let it hang from her fingers as she inspected it.
“That was easy,” MacCready said.
“No kidding,” she said “do you want to look around before we leave or?”
He shook his head, “I’m gonna go check how dark it is outside, and have a smoke. It was sunset when we got here, and it’s starting to set faster now that it’s getting closer and closer to late fall.”
“Alright. I’ll be in the main room when you come back.”
She scoured around the main room as she waited for him. She found an assortment of loot that she placed on a desk. Most of the ammo she found was either 10mm or 5mm, so she took most of it for herself. Even though she knew he would be happy to claim the minigun as his own, she also knew he would not want to haul it all the way back to Sanctuary. She evenly split the caps, stimpaks, and radiation medications. She left the chems she found alone, not wanting them for herself. She pulled the fusion core from the generator, and placed it on the desk as well. She doubted he had access to power armor, but she did not want to be greedy. Everything else was either weaponry, or something that could be considered scrap or junk. He could grab that stuff for himself.
When he came back he had an annoyed look on his face, but it softened at the sight of the various goodies she had found.
“Too dark to travel,” he said simply.
“Damn. Well, at least this place should be safe, right?”
“Except for some exploding molerats, yeah,” he joked.
She laughed quietly at that. She liked that he was already able to make her laugh easily. Not only did it make it easier to travel with him, it distracted her from the grief she was desperately trying to avoid.
She picked up the fusion core, “I’m assuming you don’t have access to power armor, so is it alright if I take this?”
“You have power armor?”
“Yeah. You didn’t see it at Sanctuary?”
“Obviously not. Why don’t you wear it?”
She shook the core in her hand, “Lack of power mostly, but it’s also not in great condition. Sturges is fixing it up.”
“Then be my guest. Power armor is worth more than a few caps.”
She placed it securely in her bag. Sturges would be happy with the find.
They searched the rest of the bunker for anything of value. They found a miniature warhead, which they agreed not to touch. When they finished they returned to the main room to settle down for the night. They sat around a trash can that had a fire burning in it. She pulled some deathclaw jerky Marcy had made from her bag, and started to eat. MacCready pulled some food from his bag as well. She could not tell what it was, and decided it was best not to ask.
After her small dinner she fiddled around with her Pip-Boy. She marked the location of the satellite, and poked around in the settings looking for something interesting.
MacCready broke the silence, “What’s with you vault dwellers and those Pip-Boys?”
She looked up at him, “What?”
“Every vault dweller I’ve heard of has had one. Do you know why Vault-Tec gave them to you?”
She saddened at the memory of pulling the device from the skeleton's arm. The visions of the vault being full of dead bodies haunted her. She cleared her throat before she spoke.
“This… was not given to me.”
“What do you mean? They’re one of the few things all the vaults have in common. That, the jumpsuits, and that every single one had some sort of fu- messed up experiment.” He suddenly looked like he regretted what he said. “Sorry, that was probably too far,” he winced.
She looked at him with wide, sad eyes. She had not thought of other vaults before. His mind had been full of other things.
“Does… does every vault have a different experiment?” she asked quietly.
“Yeah,” he said in a rather somber tone, “I’m sorry I should not have brought it up. I know how bad vaults can be.”
She suddenly felt incredibly alone. Everyone she had known was dead. Everyone who had been locked in that vault with her was dead. There was no one who had gone through what she had. No one who could truly understand.
“Boss?” he asked nervously, “are you good?”
“I’m fine,” she lied. It was an obvious one, but she was not ready to talk about the vault yet, especially not with him.
“Don’t worry about it,”she said, staring into the fire.
“If you’re sure…” he said hesitantly. “This place is pretty secure, but I think we should still keep watch. Why don’t you sleep, I’ll keep first watch,” he suggested.
She nodded in agreement, hoping sleep would keep her from her thoughts. She set up her bed roll silently. Sleep did not come easily, but it was dreamless.
