The Fete

The earliest recording we have of John singing. Not strictly a Beatles recording, but it's certainly relevant.

This was recorded at Woolton Garden Fete on the day John and Paul officially met for the first time. (There are tantalizing hints that it wasn't the first time they met, but that's for another blog).

John was 16 when this was recorded.

It's very cool to have any recording from that day and is pretty much a fluke that a fan would bring a recording device at all. They weren't exactly small.

Apparently, the entire set was recorded, but hasn't been released. Maybe it will be in the future. Who knows.

As you can see, John changed it quite a lot. He made it more rock and gave it that Lennon flare. The Quarrymen would have absolutely rather done that version as seen here

but John was going to make it Rock n' Roll anyway.

This is Elvis' version of the second song. It's not originally Elvis of course, but this is what John was probably basing his version on.

To be honest, John's version doesn't sound like either of these. As usual, John added his own thing and made the song all his own.

History quietly shifting itself into place, while half the quarry men are looking the other way.

I just I love that some people are out there writing meaningful fantastic remembrances about Paul's eyelashes and electricity in the air, and then others are like 'I don't know, maybe he was there..?'

Colin Hanton (quarry man) consistently claims that Paul met John before the Quarry Men went on to play in the afternoon. Colin was in the scout hut, playing his drums with one of the scouts, getting ready for the afternoon performance:

"At the far end of the hut, I noticed John had returned by himself. [...] He was standing talking to another scout. It was at this moment that Ivan Vaughan walked in accompanied by this dark-haired lad whom I'd never seen before. I carried on jamming while the three of them stood talking. This carried on for about five or ten minutes, after which John, Ivy, and the stranger left the scout hut together."

Sounds completely like what a constructed memory of that event would seem like, but also sounds completely like something that might have happened too, and we'll never know.

Eric, meanwhile, believes that he was there for the 'historic meeting' in the church, but that Paul never played guitar for them at that point, no matter what Paul, John, Pete, Len and Ivan have to say. He thinks John first heard Paul play a few days later when John and Eric went round to Forthlin Road specially for the 'audition'. That's where he thinks Paul played Twenty Flight Rock for the first time.

Beatles fandom is an incredible study in the vagaries of memory. I love it. It's fantastic how little we will ever know.

As Colin Hall (biographer) writes:

Like most bands, they met a lot of new people every time they were booked to play. Often there'd be a lot of people hanging out with them before or after a performance. No wonder that, in the interim, exact memories faded, details disappeared. It would be many years after the event that the Quarry Men would be asked to describe this day in the forensic detail people now want from them. [...] They were not all present in the same places for some of the key moments. At the time it was a fun day, but of no great significance to most of them beyond the moment of their performance.

He also points out that an article published just one week after the fete, ("All the Fun of the Fair at Woolton" in the Liverpool Weekly News) which is an eye-witness report written while everything was still fresh... claimed that Colin wasn't there, and the Quarry Men played without a drummer. Something easily disproved by any photograph of the day.

Give up, surrender! Beatles reporting has been pure fiction from day nought. Nothing is knowable. Everything is mist. You can keep trying, you will get nowhere. Honestly it's all an imagination, so imagine wonderful things.

In 1967, Rod Lynton was a “rising star” songwriter, so managers and record companies got behind him to record his songs by using bands-for-hire—in this case it was Fleur de Lys with Chris Andrews on lead vocals. To avoid confusion over the Fleur de Lys “brand,” the band re-named themselves “Rupert’s People.” “Hold On” was the B-side to the single Rupert’s People “Reflections on Charles Brown,” which received positive response in 10 countries. However, many said “Hold On” is the stronger track, amped up with muscular organ by Pete Solley (future sideman w/Eric Clapton, Al Stewart, Whitesnake, etc.) and edgy lead guitar by Phil Sawyer. The song was co-written with bassist Gordon Haskell (later of “Harry’s Bar” and King Crimson) and guitar hero Bryn Haworth (not credited on the record label). On a cosmic jukebox “Hold On” plays next to the soulful hard-edged blues-rock fusions of Spencer Davis Group, Pretty Things, and Brian Auger & The Trinity.

Lynton went on to collaborate with John Lennon, and Rupert’s People tracks have been reissued on soundtracks and compilations celebrating the best of 60s British rock. Jeff Beck Dead at 78

- “Jeff could channel music from the ethereal,” Jimmy Page says

Guitarist Jeff Beck is dead at 78.

The former Yardbird who went on to forge a career steeped in blues, fusion jazz and rock died Jan. 10 “after suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis,” his family said in a statement.

“His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss,” they said.

Beck’s former Yardbirds bandmate Jimmy Page mourned the man he called the “six-stringed warrior.”

Beck’s playing cast a “spell he could weave around our mortal emotions,” Page said.

“Jeff could channel music from the ethereal,” Page added. “His technique (was) unique. His imaginations apparently limitless.”

From the Yardbirds to the Jeff Beck Group, solo and in various collaborations, Beck’s recorded legacy spans 1966-2022. His impact on fellow players is deeper.

Former JBG band members Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood credited Beck with starting their careers. Beck, Stewart said, “was on another planet.”

“He was one of the few guitarists that when playing live would actually listen to me sing and respond,” the singer said. “Jeff, you were the greatest, my man. Thank you for everything.”

Said Wood: “I want to thank him for all our early days together in Jeff Beck Group, conquering America.”

Beck’s death death reverberated through the music community, his fellow musicians giving testament to his influence.

“I feel sick,” Adrian Belew said.

David Gilmour called Beck “my hero;” Tony Iommi praised him as an “outstanding, iconic, genius guitar player;” and Dave Davies eulogized Beck as “a good friend and a great guitar player.”

“He made the electric guitar sing,” Steve Hackett said. “A powerful influence on myself and many others.”

Al Di Meola said he grew up on the Truth and Beck-Ola albums and recalled seeing Beck in concert in London.

“There was no one like Jeff,” Di Meola said. “He had the most unique style - in a very prestigious category.”

Tina Turner, the iconic singer who was dubbed the "Queen of Rock'n Roll," died on Wednesday, May 24, at the age of 83. Her publicist Bernard Doherty confirmed to PEOPLE that she died in her home near Zurich, Switzerland. 

"Tina Turner, the "Queen of Rock'n Roll" has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model," Doherty said in a statement. "There will be a private funeral ceremony attended by close friends and family. Please respect the privacy of her family at this difficult time."

As the front-woman for the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, Turner's performance prowess made her and her then-husband Ike Turner one of the most electrifying acts of the 1960s, serving up high octane covers of "Proud Mary," "Come Together," and "I Want to Take You Higher." Turner eventually struck out on her own as a solo artist in the '70s and became a star in the MTV age with hits like "What's Love Got to Do with It," "The Best," and "Private Dancer."

Cher joined MSNBC to speak about her relationship with the late Queen of Rock. The "Believe" singer revealed that she was previously aware of Turner's illness and made an effort to "put in the time" for their friendship in her final years.

"We were perfect friends for each other, truly," Cher added. "I swore like a sailor and she never did."

Inside Tina Turner's 37-Year Romance with Erwin Bach

Tina Turner found her king when she met her future second husband Erwin Bach at an airport nearly 40 years ago. The music legend opened up about her romance with Bach, now 67, in her 2021 HBO documentary Tina.

"He was [16 years] younger [than me]. He was 30 years old at the time and had the prettiest face. I mean, you cannot [describe] it. It was like insane. [I thought], 'Where did he come from?' He was really so good-looking. My heart [was beating fast] and it means that a soul has met, and my hands were shaking," Turner recalled in the film.

Inside Tina Turner's Health Struggles

Throughout her longstanding 60-year career, the Queen of Rock was often vocal about her health struggles, which date back to 1978 when she was diagnosed with hypertension.

She detailed the experience in an interview with the European Health Kidney Alliance explaining, "I can’t remember ever getting an explanation about what high blood pressure means or how it affects the body. I considered high blood pressure my normal. Hence, I didn’t really try to control it."

With her condition left untreated, Turner suffered a stroke in 2013 just three weeks after she wed her husband, Erwin Bach. Her health took a turn for the worse again in 2016 when she was diagnosed with intestinal cancer.

After experiencing unpleasant side effects from her initial treatment, Turner turned to homeopathic remedies, which only worsened her condition and led her to have total kidney failure. She received a largely successful kidney donation operation from Bach in April 2017, though Turner still experienced mild symptoms.

“God bless you Tina, the Queen Of Rock And Soul and a dear friend to our family. Two of the photos saw Turner with Wood’s twin 6-year-old daughters, Gracie Jane and Alice Rose, during their toddler years.

Turner’s longtime manager, Roger Davies, paid tribute to the late Queen of Rock in a statement to PEOPLE. 

“Tina was a unique and remarkable force of nature with her strength, incredible energy and immense talent,” the music producer said. “From the first day I met her in 1980 she believed in herself completely when few others did at that time.” 

He continued: “It was a privilege and an honour to have been a close friend as well as her manager for more than 30 years. I will miss her deeply.”
