An iconic song refrain.
Some interesting background information about the song (mostly Wiki):
The song was composed by British songwriters Chris Thompson, Andy Qunta and Maggie Ryder in response to an anti-nuclear demonstration in London's Hyde Park in 1985.
Chris Thompson intended to attend the rally, but he overslept. (More than 100,000 people attended the rally.)
As his 'penance' (for missing the rally) he decided to compose a song emphasising the importance of personal choices/volition for political change.
Chris Thompson knew the singer John Farnham (as the teen idol Johnny Farnham), but was doubtful he could do justice to the required singing.
John Farnham at that time was in heavy debt ('very bad business decisions'). He had sold his house and car to pay debts, and was living in a rented house.
Hearing the demo, John Farnham knew this could be a make-or-break moment for his career.
In his basement, he recorded the song, changing the bass (from the demo) for bagpipes.
The song was heard by many studio executives and refined/improved every time.
BUT no label was ready to release the album, nor were radio stations keen to play the song, because of his "Johnny Farnham" image (he was a teen pop idol in his early years - 1967 to 1979). See Johnny Farnham's 1967 UK song Sadie (the Cleaning Lady): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0c55lXRAeg
It was ultimately released by his talent manager's (Glenn Wheatley's) label Wheatley Records in 1986 as a single before the album release.
Whispering Jack eventually went 24× Platinum, with sales of 1.68 million in Australia alone.
It was the third-highest-selling album of all time in Australia as well as the highest of any Australian artist.
Whispering Jack outsold The Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in Australia. (Source: https://facts.net/celebrity/22-astonishing-facts-about-john-farnham/)
It was the first Australian-made album to be released on compact disc within Australia.
Funny: Australia gave him the Australian of the Year award/honour in 1987. At that time, he wasn't an Australian citizen (I guess they didn't know, since he was around for so long). He (quickly) became an Australian citizen in 1988. [Had to dig on and on for 2 hours to verify what I had read years back. All chat AI initially only says he was already an Australian citizen.] And No - it doesn't change anything about him or the award. Respect.

Lyrics:
We have the chance to turn the pages over
We can write what we want to write
We gotta make ends meet, before we get much older
We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?
You're the voice, try and understand it
Make a noise and make it clear
Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo
We're not gonna sit in silence
We're not gonna live with fear
Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo
This time, we know we all can stand together
With the power to be powerful
Believing we can make it better
Ooooh
We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?
You're the voice, try and understand it
Make a noise and make it clear
Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo
We're not gonna sit in silence
We're not gonna live with fear
Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo
Ooooh
We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?
You're the voice, try and understand it
Make a noise and make it clear
Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo
We're not gonna sit in silence
We're not gonna live with fear
Oh-wo-wo-wo, oh-wo-wo-wo [4x]

Fem February: Music
Okay my brain instantly went hard mode when I saw 'female fronted bands', before catching 'singers'. Because I was having a hell of a time remembering names of mixed gender bands with female singers.
Five faves, huh? Of Women Singers/Fronted Bands?
Muses of Yore, if you ever grace me with the name of the black heavy metal lady with the braids I will love you forever. I remember her from Headbanger's Ball but never did remember to write her name down. If this rings a bell with anyone, HER. She had fucking stage presence like whoa, and was awesome.
Anywho, moving on to the ones I can actually name.
TRACY CHAPMAN. Fucking hands down, Tracy is my all-time favorite woman singer AND song-writer. "Fast Car" might have been the gateway drug to knowing about her, but "Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution" sits in my soul and won't let go, right beside "Give Me One Reason". Her voice is in the perfect range to soothe and call to me, and the lyrics bring all the emotions, evoking a lot of how I grew up.
Janelle Monáe. She is (they are? I cannot remember where Janelle stands on pronouns at this moment), without a doubt in my mind, the absolute perfect heir to Prince's legacy. From the concept albums to the sheer vitality of the music and lyrics blending, Janelle is my favorite of this century so far.
The Bangles. Wait, Asp, really? A bubblegum pop girl group? At least pick the Go-Gos or something — NO. "Walk Like An Egyptian" slammed them onto my awareness. I LOVED the way vocals alternate between the women. I was over the moon that one of their names was Michael. That she was connected back to the Runaways just made that sweeter. The videos were great (they got Leonard Nimoy in one!). I truly blame the music business for them not going further, with the insistence on headlining Susanna Hoff as the lead singer.
Basia. While it is common for non-English speaking singers to lose their accent when singing English songs, Basia's still came through on her earliest albums. It added a different quality to the music that hooked me. Her second album was one of several in rotation as self-soothing on-repeat listens for me.
I'm going to cheat on number five, because I have three younger stars of the current century to highlight, and their sound/subjects all pull at me in a very similar fashion. Maggie Rogers ("Light On"), Rosa Linn ("SNAP"), and Alessia Cara ("Scars to Your Beautiful") were likely all introduced to me by my son's musical sharing. All three of these woman have a soothing range that I can listen to for hours. The way they approach life and love in their songs strikes a chord with me.
(I could go on for hours. Others considered for this included Donna Summer, The Pointer Sisters, Dionne Warwick, Florence Welch, Sarah McLachlan, Tina Turner, The Eurythmics, Enya, and Melissa Manchester.)

Baby, we were bored to death : 2000 : FM radio station market, Toronto
Why does Toronto have such insipid and boring radio? Our city is vibrant, artistic, culturally diverse and entertaining, so why is none of that reflected in our uninspired radio stations? Travelling in Europe and North America as a radio consultant, I listen to a lot of radio and it is tragic to concede that my own city has some of the most boring radio stations known to mankind.
Opportunities to change this sad state of radio in our city are everywhere, but have too often been ignored. When Shaw Communications purchased 'Energy 108' a couple of years ago, it could have reinvented the station as a cultural focus for Toronto's young people. Instead, Shaw fired 'Energy's most knowledgeable DJ's, introduced Sarah McLachlan songs once an hour (in a dance music format?) and changed the name to … 'Energy 107.9'. Wow! How many minutes did it take the marketing department to devise a strategy that unambitious?
Rogers Media's purchase of 'KISS 92' last year was a complete no-brainer. Can you name any other city of similar size in North America that has had no Top Forty radio station for a period of even a few months? And yet Toronto suffered this malaise for several years. Even if Rogers had hired a helium-voiced bimbo DJ to front a Top Forty format, it still could have captured a huge audience hungry for what used to be called 'pop music'. And that is exactly what they did. 'KISS's ratings are noteworthy, not just for the hordes of spotty grade nine students who naturally gravitate towards Backstreet Boys soundalikes and terrible Canadian techno. But the station's substantial audience over the age of twenty is a sad reflection of the lack of any other remotely exciting music station in Toronto. For those of us past our teen years, 'KISS 92' at least makes you feel good to be alive, compared with other FM music stations that treat listeners like senile geriatrics with one foot already in the grave.
One would hope that 'KISS 92's runaway success might encourage its competitors to try and become a little more imaginative in their programs. The signs so far are not particularly encouraging. 'EZ Rock 97' revamped its daytime line-up last week to introduce even more soporific DJ's and has changed its slogan from 'My Music At Work' to 'Soft Rock Favourites'. Station owner Telemedia appointed a new Program Director drafted from its Calgary operation to oversee these changes. Yes, Calgary – that hotbed of radical, imaginative radio formats! 'EZ Rock' looks certain to retain its nickname of 'Radio Slumberland' in our household.
Milestone Radio, scheduled to launch next year, has an incredible opportunity to turn its black music format into an exciting, inclusive station that could electrify the city. After all, black culture has never been so predominant, nor so imitated, in mainstream music and arts. With imagination, Milestone could be a very successful radio version of 'City TV'. Whether its owners can grasp that challenge, let alone succeed with it, depends upon the station's ability to overcome three obstacles. Milestone's programming plans are the obvious product of committee debate, with too many worthy (but commercially disastrous) ideas generated by individuals who have particular axes to grind. Its recent effort to recruit a Program Director in the US rings alarm bells that Milestone is creating a cookie-cutter US-style urban music station that would reflect nothing of Toronto (listen to 'WBLK' for days on end and you will learn absolutely nothing about Buffalo, but everything about 'strong songs'). And lastly, the spectre of minority shareholder Standard Broadcasting might be waiting quietly in the shadows for Milestone's ambitious plans to fail in the first year, so that it can take control and resurrect the station as a smooth-jazz format, fitting perfectly alongside its mind-numbing 'MIX 99'.
As for 'Edge 102' and 'Q-107', their owners should have been bold enough to extinguish these dinosaur formats years ago. There is so much exciting new music in the world, but you will certainly never hear any of it played on these two stations. The malaise is so bad that Toronto radio critic Marc Weisblott felt obliged to apologise in a recent column (radiodigest.com) for spending so much time listening to New York City radio via the internet. No need to apologise, Marc. Our only ray of hope is that one fine morning, some bold senior executive in Shaw/Corus, Standard, CHUM or Rogers might suddenly understand that radio which is stimulating and challenging can also be a commercial success. I would prescribe that executive a quick radio listening visit to any major city in the world to understand the potential. Otherwise, Toronto radio is condemned to be a mere revenue-generating asset designed to send us all to permanent sleep with yet another Celine Dion or Bryan Adams song.

(from the headcanon verse @adirotynd and I have where Sharon Carter is canadian and wears a a toque and puffy vests over plaid shirts while she roughly tops the fuck out of Steve Rogers, you know how it is)
Canadian Sharon Carter is too cool to admit she listens to Sarah McLachlan, but secretly she has a canadian 90s feminist playlist that she listens to only very occasionally okay. Steve accidentally finds it without knowing what it is, because she obviously saved it under a neutral generic name, and now he doesn’t know whether he’s turned on by the possibility of Sharon threatening to cutting his dick off if they ever break up (spoiler alert, he is)
Playlist features:
Sarah McLachlan
Alanis Morissette
Jann Arden
Amanda Marshall
Kathleen Edwards
Sarah Harmer

This week's [30-08-2021 - 05-09-2021] reading log is here! I didn't read as much this week because I had quite a busy week but I still have a few fics I really want to share because they were so lovely! There's a mix of different ships this week, though the majority is still Stucky.
Favourites are marked with 🌻, Tumblr-Only fics are marker with 🍀.
Truth or Dare by rainbow_nerds [Stucky, 665 words, Teen]
It all starts with a dare, as so many things tend to do.
Au-Gust day 29: Pretend relationship
🌻 the dizzy, dancing way you feel by its_tortle @its-tortle [Evanstan, 4,4k words, Teen]
“We should go to Disney World,” Chris announces in the car.
“Haven’t you been, like, a dozen times?”
Chris looks up from his phone, his eyes dancing. “The magic never stops, Sebby.”
Sebastian rolls his eyes, but he already knows he’ll cave. It really isn’t his thing, but he likes Chris more than he hates roller coasters. Likes him too much, that is.
🍀 Body Talk by @boxofbonesfic [Bucky x Reader, Explicit]
You’re determined to come out of this breakup a better you, but Bucky likes the you you are.
Loosen Me Up by this_wayward_life [Stucky, 4,8k words, Explicit]
"Please tell me there are no more appointments and we can close early."
Darcy looks down at her computer, giving the keyboard a few taps with her long, bright red acrylics. How she even manages to type with those things on, Bucky has no idea.
"Just one more. A Steve Rogers coming in at seven. Says he thinks he strained a muscle at the gym."
"A gym junkie?" Bucky grimaces, and Darcy clucks sympathetically.
"Hey, at least it's not another divorced mother who'll try and take a bite out of you. Or another old man who's just there to get his rocks off."
"You know this isn't a brothel, right?" Bucky frowns, making Darcy grin.
Or: Masseur Bucky gets a lot more than he bargained for when he takes Steve Rogers on as a client.
🌻 to changing by christywantspizza @christywantspizza [Stucky, 10,9k words, Mature]
Steve and Bucky's first evening out on a date goes wonderfully and as they get closer and learn to open up to each other, they deal with the shift in their relationship.
Written for Stucky Week 2021 | Day 6 - Kisses
Paused by rainbow_nerds [Stucky, 679 words, Teen]
It’s been a year since that day. Since Bucky had woken up and found the world had ended.
Well, not so much ended as… stopped.
AU-gust day 30- The Day the World Died
🌻 Five More Minutes by BonkyBornes @padfoot-and-the-marauders [Stucky, 3k words, Not Rated]
Bucky leaned against the counter, still looking pale but better than when he’d first woken up. A mug of coffee was cupped between his palms. He brightened when he saw the two of them. Setting his coffee down, he held his arms out for Cat. Steve passed her over, but not before giving Bucky a kiss. His lips were dry, but he didn’t seem as warm as before.
“Papa’s sick?” Catríona asked as soon as she was on his hip.
“Papa’s fine,” Steve heard Bucky say, his voice a little hoarse, as he made his way back upstairs to get dressed. “Your dada’s just a little overdramatic.”
🍀 Stucky fic by @ipoiledi [Stucky, Explicit]
“Oh,” Steve moans. “Oh, you ain’t playin’ fair, Barnes.”
“When in our lives,” Bucky asks, “Have I ever played fair?”
🍀 Stucky fic by @misspluckyplum [Stucky, Mature]
Based on Wreckless Love by Alicia Keys
The hat was dusty, musty. Steve had found a hat box at a Marshalls, maybe, and stored them away for Bucky.
🍀 Stucky fic 2 by @misspluckyplum [Stucky, Mature]
Based on Ice Cream by Sarah McLachlan
“We’ve really come a long way.”
Bucky snorted, looking up from over the pint of mint chocolate chunk they were sharing.
“In uh, what context there, sugar,” he asked, winking. Steve rolled his eyes at him.
🍀 Chris x Reader fic by @laurenwritesfics [Chris x Reader, General]
You never would have guessed that in 48 hours you'd be married. + Steve Rogers
Eyes of the Forest by lordelannette [Stucky, 20,1k words, Explicit] (5/8 chapters available)
When Omega Bucky Barnes comes to Eagle Lake, it was in search of wolves, a creature that had not been seen in the area for decades.
What he finds instead is Steve Rogers, a handsome, though quiet Alpha who seems to be everywhere in the forest.
Grab Me a Cup, Doll? by oldasyouromens [Stucky, 2,1k words, Teen]
Steve moves to stand from the table, running his hand across Bucky’s back and murmuring something about getting coffee.
Bucky’s sleep-addled brain takes a minute to catch up, but he calls to Steve over the hum of conversation, “Can you grab me a cup, too, doll?”
“Excuse me?”
-
Some miscommunications at the weekly Avengers Sunday Brunch.
🍀 Pre War Stucky fic by @moonykat & @turtle-steverogers
pre war stucky staying the weekend at bucky’s aunt’s house because she lives upstate. she’s gone for the weekend and so they have this house to themselves, and it’s further removed from a lot of people, so they have the privacy to explore each other

And the Captain finally breaks…
The day started off ordinary, Cap brought Champ to the vet and then they went for a walk in the park. It turned out to be a long walk and he found himself at the church and the cemetery
The graveyard was quiet and Steve just started sobbing. Ugly sobbing with Champ there, his only witness and companion.
I’m sorry Natalie. I’m so sorry. You deserve better…
“It was her time Captain. I know it’s hard for you to believe it. But it was just her time.”
There was Dr Strange again mysteriously appearing like some apparition.
“She was barely fifteen.”
“Natalie’s at peace now. You need to forgive yourself. You couldn’t have known.” Strange sighed.
“You did warn me.” Steve said to the doctor. “But did you know that it would be her?”
Dr Strange shook his head. “It could have been anyone, anyone you or Natasha loves. But there was no pain for Natalie when it was her time to go.”
“My wife wants a divorce. She blames me for Natalie’s death. Maybe she has a point.”
“So are you divorcing her?” Dr Strange asked.
“No. I’d rather she hate me than leave.”
“Well normally I would advise you to let her go…” Strange said. “If you love someone, you set them free and all that…”
“No…” Steve shook his head vehemently.
“Well yes.” Dr Strange snorted. “You’re still steadfast in your obsession with Agent Romanoff.”
“It’s Rogers now.” Steve corrected. It's been Rogers for more than eighteen years. “And it’s not an obsession. I love her. I would have done anything to save her.”
The visit to the cemetery left him bereft. The Overwhelming sadness that Steve had bottled inside finally came pouring.
He went home and started crying in the privacy of the master bedroom. Jamie and Sarah were still in school. It was an emotional breakdown. Nat came rushing in.
“Steve… what’s wrong?”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for everything. When I brought you here. Strange warned me of the consequences. I didn’t think the Soul Stone would have taken one of our kids. Nat you have to believe me. I would never want to hurt you or any of our children…”
“I know you’re angry and you hate me. And it’s okay, it’s fine. Just don’t go Nat, don’t leave. I know you said you can live without me, but I can’t be without you…”
“Steve. Don’t be silly. Of course you can live without me. I’m not oxygen.”
“I tried Nat. Believe me, I tried. I thought Peggy was the one. I tried to make it work back in her time. Just couldn’t.”
“We belong together, we always have. Please tell me you believe that Nat. You say you don’t love me anymore…but I… just give me a chance, give us a chance Natasha.”
“I lied Steve…” Nat breathed in deeply. “Of course I still love you. I never stopped loving you. Even then, even before…”
“Before?” Steve was confused.
“When I told you I had feelings for you…and you friendzoned me…” Nat breathed.
“Fuck…you had me at Hello Steve..” She finally told him.
But you never said anything or asked me out. So I figured you weren’t that into me. And we just become co-workers and friends. And that's okay I guess...I could love you from afar...
“I need time…” She told him.
“Our baby girl’s death. It broke something in me Steve. I don’t know if I can be fixed. I feel so empty inside and I’m taking it out on you. And I’m sorry because I know you’re hurting too and you don’t deserve this.”
“It’s okay…” He cooed softly as Nat started sobbing and held her. “We’ll fix each other Nat. I promise we’ll be whole again...”
Also I had this song on repeat…
