You've all seen the 4th Dynasty beadnet dress now, but what if I could further interest you in the 12th Dynasty faience beadwork apron of Senebtisi:

The apron is made out of faience beads in various shapes. The two sides have distinct motifs: the right side (viewer's left) is made from long round tube beads with lotus-shaped beads at the top beneath the belt, and the left side consists of elongated barrel beads separated by dogbone beads, topped with papyrus-shaped beads.

The sides are separated by a gold-coloured, rectangular buckle carrying Senebtisi's name in hieroglyphs (read from right to left) at the front, and by a gold-capped tail comprised of small rondelle beads at the back.

Not much is known about Senebtisi. She was buried at Lisht with a large array of expensive grave goods, and this apron could potentially indicate a royal connection.

My Other Crochet Aunt

Several times I have brought up the very precise and finely-crocheted four dresses my one Aunt-Who-Crocheted made for me when I was very young--way too young to appreciate the skill and time, and I was also not a good audience for the very traditional style of those dresses. I do still have one, and I am happy to have it.

My other Aunt-Who-Crocheted was much more prolific and, frankly, gaudy in her approach. She'd usually start with a rubber band and some crochet thread in colors she liked, and maybe a bag of cheap plastic craft store beads (faceted beads, transparent faceted rondelles, tri beads) and just start crocheting. Lots of skill and fun but no plan and no worried about if the result would be in any way like actual clothes.

When I was little, I loved the piles of doll clothes she made for me (and all my cousins got them, too.) When I got older, I started thinking they were just too unrealistic. I put them away, eventually to sort out my favorites and give the rest away. I understand this could be seen as disrespectful; it's in the past, it's done.

I have not taken many photos of dolls wearing things made by this Aunt, but under the cut are some I've been ale to find (there aren't a lot, but pictures are big)

This originally had a little tab on the chest with two clear faceted beads on it, which I carefully removed at some point

This skirt originally has a bib top on it, which I removed when, I believe, I had to replace the deteriorated rubber band (I threaded in either elastic thread or lightweight elastic cord)

I do have several more dresses made by that Aunt, but I don't know if I've ever photographed them--it took a while to find even those above, and I realized that there are multiple pictures of different dolls wearing most of them (especially the white dress)

Land-Wights Devotional Garland (SOLD)

This set of devotional beads was inspired by the tutelary spirits, often known as the Land Wights.

It was constructed from alternating Moss Agate rondelle beads and handmade Hazel Wood beads, with a single bead of Jasperized Wood at its center. On one end is secured a small Hagstone discovered in a local creek, and on the other end is secured a fragment of Antique Bronzework, which was auspiciousy discovered, buried in the earth, before being cleaned and oiled. Upon assembly, the entire piece was then suffumigated with a smoke of wild-foraged Oakmoss, Sorrel, and Mint.

This piece measures approximately 19 inches/48 centimeters long, and all connecting rings and pins are made from silver-plated steel. It is being sold for $55 + Shipping, so if interested, free free to message me on tumblr or purchase it directly through my webshop.

Two costumes, 20 years apart

Both of these costumes were based on screen-used dresses, using self drafted patterns and my best attempt at recreating what was seen in the filmed media. Both feature neckline trim with beading applied over top, and screen-accurate jewelry, but that's about where the similarities end.

The Return of the King dress was made fairly quickly, over the course of about a month in the fall of 2003, and used a modified stretch velvet dress I already had on hand. The underdress was drafted from scratch, but a t-tunic shape without set-in sleeves was about the height of my pattern drafting skills at the time. I remember carefully figuring out the shape for the lower sleeve, to get the bell to hang right. Just about every bit of it is polyester. Neither the cut, color, nor fabric is accurate to what's in the movie, but I wanted something that had the feel of one of Arwen's dresses, just for the fun of dressing up for the premiere, and it certainly achieved that.

By contrast, the House of the Dragon dress was made over about 8 months, from January to August 2023. The pattern was drafted from my measurements into a 10 panel princess seam dress, with the waist, hip, and skirt measurements being equal in every panel. Both the red overdress and the black underdress (providing opacity and a modesty panel under the back lacing, but otherwise unseen here) are made from 100% silk fabric. The trim at the neckline and the narrower trim along the vertical seamlines are both polyester, but the beads over the neckline trim are garnet rondelles rather than plastic. The screen-accurate earrings were made by me as well, and along with other purchased jewelry and the wig (also styled by me) complete the over all screen accurate look -- as opposed to whatever earrings I threw on in 2003 and the weird hair color I was sporting at the time, lol.

My sewing and general costuming skills have definitely improved in the last 20 years, but it's interesting to see that both of these dresses have a bit of trouble with the neckline not wanting to lay flat. For the Arwen dress, this was because I didn't yet know how to iron trim to curve it before applying it to a round neckline, and I chose bad trim for achieving that, anyway. For Rhaenyra, the problem was that the V neck was cut on the bias and stretched more than I had anticipated, and I didn't realize it until after the trim was all on and the lacing in the back grommetted right through it. I did look closely at fixing that by taking in the top edge of the center front by a fraction, but I had actually attached the trim so well that I couldn't move that seam without damaging the trim.

The other similarity between these two dresses is perhaps the most important of all: people at the event knew who I was dressed as, and I had an absolute blast wearing both costumes. Still, it's fun to look back at the improvement in my skills over the last 20 years.
