So it’s National Geographic Day.

And as much as I like National Geographic, I really need to talk about something that’s been bothering me a lot, especially lately, since I have heard about the subject in the last months for obvious reasons. You surely remember about the “Afghan Girl” photographed by Steve McCurry in 1984. Her name was Sharbat Gula.

I’ll quote some posts I have read on the Internet:

...the settler-colonizer attitude that the photographer had when he shot Sharbat Gula's photo. This whte man DID go into an all-girls school and took a photo of a girl bc he liked her eyes and he set up a photo that disrupted her life and hasn't benefitted her specifically very much.

Yes now she's heard that her photo helped raise money for charities she feels better and the photo (thank God) has given her benefits now that she's been deported back to Afghanistan despite the fact she was raised most of her life in Pakistan. She has still not directly received any of the hundreds of thousands of dollars the photographer and NatGeo received from her image and, I emphasize, she was deported bc the authorities knew she was in Pakistan when they felt she needed to go back to Afghanistan.

The attitude the photographer had and the attitude that "who cares? Why bring it up? It was 30 years ago," is not ok. But it's the attitude that many colonized people deal with all the time.

McCurry rose to fame for a photograph that was taken without consent and a subject whose name was not recorded. She is visibly angry in this photograph. Decades later when she was tracked by journalists, she said she was angered by its publication. This kind of journalism is emblematic of the fetishization of girls and women of war and reduces them to unnamed beings with no agency. For me this is a symbol of unethical journalism.

For those who are wondering: as far as we know, she’s managed to escape Afghanistan and has been evacuated safely to Italy... which is something not many people can say. 

On a separate note, she obviously doesn’t look exactly the same as she did at the time the picture was taken, and people are quite disappointed with it; I read a significant amount of comments insinuating that’s not the same person.

The edible flower is a new concept to India except for rose which is an integral part of Indian dishes like pan, sweets, sharbat, etc. The leaves of the flowers explained in the video are edible and are also used to decorate the dishes. The flowers showed in the video including calendula, sweet William, Dianthus, pansy, etc.

Summers drinks 🍹 Come summers, and temperatures begin to soar high leaving daughter feeling fatigued. Staying hydrated is an essential factor to keep functioning in this sweltering heat and maintain good health. I make a lot of different varieties of drinks for her - Bel sharbat, aam panna, shikvanji, pudhina nimbu pani, jaljeera, coconut water, water melon juice, mango shake, various kinds of iced teas with sabja/chia seeds, roohafja with gond katira and then these too sharbats. Rose and Khus! Kishi loves both of them. I always have some soaked gond katira and chia seeds handy, so I add the same to all of them. Order this if you’re going to an indian restaurant and would like to have your mind blown (veg version):

1. Appetizer: Manchow Soup. Put a few sticks in > eat > put some more > repeat.

2. Main: Dal Makhani (ask for tadka), 2 Garlic Naan, Rice. First, finish the naan by dipping it in the dal. Once the naan runs out, finish the rice with the remaining of the dal. (Dal Makhani is the superior curry I will die on this hill).

3. Drink: Rose Sharbat

4. Dessert: Milk Cake (!!!!)
