🌈💝
[ask prompts]
🌈 is there a fic that you worked *really fucking hard on* that no one would ever know? maybe a scene/theme you struggled with?
I don't think anyone would guess that I worked really hard on desperate times, on account of it being deeply shallow filth from start to finish. And, in all fairness, I didn't really work that hard on it (though I did spend several hours trying to get them to shut up and start fucking), but it represents the culmination of three years worth of efforts trying to write a sex scene for them. There are a few reasons I know of that I have so much trouble writing smut for that pairing, and probably way more that I'm not aware of, so being able to write that after MANY abandoned smut wips was a triumph.
💝 what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
I was surprised that To Whom It May Concern— got such a positive response! I think generally most people are much kinder in their interpretations of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon than I am (at least when it comes to my corner of the fandom), and though that fic isn't exactly putting their worst selves on display, they're not exactly pleasant or particularly functional people. I'd guess it got a pass from most readers because they're funny about being terrible (it is a comedy) and the narrative rewards them in the end, but as the author it's clear to me that a lot of misery sits in store for them just because of who they are (though they do eventually get it together).

Posted this one a little while ago, but does an abandoned fic even know time...? (Answer: clearly not.)
The premise of the fic is a what-if? canon-divergence idea where both Gandalf and Aragorn die in Moria, leaving the Fellowship to struggle on without either of their leaders.
And unfortunately, I did not leave any notes for my future-self when I started working on it originally, so every time I've tried to go back to it since my initial burst of work has run into the roadblock of my having no (middle-)earthly idea what was meant to HAPPEN?
I still don't know, but here's the immediate aftermath at least, while the Fellowship tries to pull themselves together in Lórien and figure out how to go on with the Quest without Aragorn or Gandalf there to guide them. We make it as far as the Anduin...
And there we leave them, to sink or swim as chance wills.

Inspired by this post by @roselightfairy and replies by @herrhasen, @enide-s-dear, @unnamedelement, @dragonfirez, and @carlandrea.
If you'd like to refresh your memory of the Fellowship at its bitchiest (and Boromir at his best), the relevant text is below the cut.
Excerpted from The Fellowship of the Ring, Book II, Chapter 3: The Ring Goes South
Gimli looked up and shook his head. 'Caradhras has not forgiven us.' he said. 'He has more snow yet to fling at us, if we go on. The sooner we go back and down the better.'
To this all agreed, but their retreat was now difficult. It might well prove impossible. Only a few paces from the ashes of their fire the snow lay many feet deep, higher than the heads of the hobbits; in places it had been scooped and piled by the wind into great drifts against the cliff.
'If Gandalf would go before us with a bright flame, he might melt a path for you,' said Legolas. The storm had troubled him little, and he alone of the Company remained still light of heart.
'If Elves could fly over mountains, they might fetch the Sun to save us,' answered Gandalf. 'But I must have something to work on. I cannot burn snow.'
'Well,' said Boromir, 'when heads are at a loss bodies must serve, as we say in my country. The strongest of us must seek a way. See! Though all is now snow-clad, our path, as we came up, turned about that shoulder of rock down yonder. It was there that the snow first began to burden us. If we could reach that point, maybe it would prove easier beyond. It is no more than a furlong off, I guess.'
'Then let us force a path thither, you and I!' said Aragorn.
Aragorn was the tallest of the Company, but Boromir, little less in height, was broader and heavier in build. He led the way, and Aragorn followed him. Slowly they moved off, and were soon toiling heavily. In places the snow was breast-high, and often Boromir seemed to be swimming or burrowing with his great arms rather than walking.
Legolas watched them for a while with a smile upon his lips, and then he turned to the others. 'The strongest must seek a way, say you? But I say: let a ploughman plough, but choose an otter for swimming, and for running light over grass and leaf or over snow-an Elf.'
With that he sprang forth nimbly, and then Frodo noticed as if for the first time, though he had long known it, that the Elf had no boots, but wore only light shoes, as he always did, and his feet made little imprint in the snow.
'Farewell!' he said to Gandalf. 'I go to find the Sun!' Then swift as a runner over firm sand he shot away, and quickly overtaking the toiling men, with a wave of his hand he passed them, and sped into the distance, and vanished round the rocky turn.
The others waited huddled together, watching until Boromir and Aragorn dwindled into black specks in the whiteness. At length they too passed from sight. The time dragged on. The clouds lowered, and now a few flakes of snow came curling down again.
An hour, maybe, went by, though it seemed far longer, and then at last they saw Legolas coming back. At the same time Boromir and Aragorn reappeared round the bend far behind him and came labouring up the slope.
'Well,' cried Legolas as he ran up, 'I have not brought the Sun. She is walking in the blue fields of the South, and a little wreath of snow on this Redhorn hillock troubles her not at all. But I have brought back a gleam of good hope for those who are doomed to go on feet. There is the greatest winddrift of all just beyond the turn, and there our Strong Men were almost buried. They despaired, until I returned and told them that the drift was little wider than a wall. And on the other side the snow suddenly grows less, while further down it is no more than a white coverlet to cool a hobbit's toes.'
'Ah, it is as I said,' growled Gimli. 'It was no ordinary storm. It is the ill will of Caradhras. He does not love Elves and Dwarves, and that drift was laid to cut off our escape.'
'But happily your Caradhras has forgotten that you have Men with you,' said Boromir, who came up at that moment. 'And doughty Men too, if I may say it; though lesser men with spades might have served you better. Still, we have thrust a lane through the drift; and for that all here may be grateful who cannot run as light as Elves.'
'But how are we to get down there, even if you have cut through the drift?' said Pippin, voicing the thought of all the hobbits.
'Have hope!' said Boromir. 'I am weary, but I still have some strength left, and Aragorn too. We will bear the little folk. The others no doubt will make shift to tread the path behind us. Come, Master Peregrin! I will begin with you.'
He lifted up the hobbit. 'Cling to my back! I shall need my arms' he said and strode forward. Aragorn with Merry came behind. Pippin marvelled at his strength, seeing the passage that he had already forced with no other tool than his great limbs. Even now, burdened as he was, he was widening the track for those who followed, thrusting the snow aside as he went.
They came at length to the great drift. It was flung across the mountainpath like a sheer and sudden wall, and its crest, sharp as if shaped with knives, reared up more than twice the height of Boromir; but through the middle a passage had been beaten, rising and falling like a bridge. On the far side Merry and Pippin were set down, and there they waited with Legolas for the rest of the Company to arrive.
After a while Boromir returned carrying Sam. Behind in the narrow but now well-trodden track came Gandalf, leading Bill with Gimli perched among the baggage. Last came Aragorn carrying Frodo. They passed through the lane; but hardly had Frodo touched the ground when with a deep rumble there rolled down a fall of stones and slithering snow. The spray of it half blinded the Company as they crouched against the cliff, and when the air cleared again they saw that the path was blocked behind them.
'Enough, enough!' cried Gimli. 'We are departing as quickly as we may!'
And indeed with that last stroke the malice of the mountain seemed to be expended, as if Caradhras was satisfied that the invaders had been beaten off and would not dare to return. The threat of snow lifted; the clouds began to break and the light grew broader.
As Legolas had reported, they found that the snow became steadily more shallow as they went down, so that even the hobbits could trudge along. Soon they all stood once more on the flat shelf at the head of the steep slope where they had felt the first flakes of snow the night before.

Do you ship Frodo with anyone?
Hiya! I enjoy Frodo in a QPR with the Gamgees, usually in an ace kind of way. @roselightfairy and I jokingly refer to him as Sam's sugar daddy, except the "sugar" in the arrangement is, like, tomatoes.

Throwback Thursday
Legolas time today! Have a little origin story for him, from May of 2023, in A Mighty Shot in the Darkness.
Here's an excerpt:
Before he could walk, Legolas rode on her chest as they traveled the sky roads, his small hands learning to greet the vines, to thank the trees for shelter with an affectionate touch. Thranduil sang beside her as she taught their son the moods and habits of the Wood – the binding and breathing and the slow, wild intelligence that held them safely in its grasp. The deep Song wound around them as Legolas dreamed against her heart, secure in the sound of her, the sound of the forest, beating.
@myliobatis @elentarial @tathrin @littlewhitemouseagain @cuarthol @roselightfairy @searchingforserendipity25 feel like sharing an oldie but goodie? Or anyone else who is so moved?

Legolas suffering from sea-longing | Ao3 fic recs
Hello, under the read more you'll find a masterlist of fics where Legolas goes through the ordeal of sea-longing! 99% of them will include the pairing Gimli/Legolas, this list exists to be edited and nourished as long as I keep ruining my happiness with their existence :))))
"Legolas Greenleaf long under tree In joy thou hast lived. Beware of the Sea! If thou hearest the cry of the gull on the shore, Thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more." Galadriel
root and stone, song and sea, by @coveredinsun | words 13k+, post-canon, fluff and angst & Gimleaf
Summary: "[...] Or: A few looks into Legolas' sea-longing, and the joyous things that make it more bearable." [this one broke me I cried and smiled and every sentence deserves to be cherished, and everything this author writes is gold]
rebuil your seawall (brick by brick), by @deheerkonijn | words 30k+, modernAU & Gimleaf
Summary: "For weeks and months, Legolas has felt a pull - and dares not name it, does not heed its stormy-sky warnings, does not track the ebb and flow on the shoreline of his life. Here’s the thing about the tide, though: it rises whether one wills it or not." [this one made me lose my shit it was so well thought and the universe in which it's set is immense and dear, such a great series]
Across the sea (a pale moon rises), by loving_rat_314 | words 10k (unfinished), post-canon & old age & Gimleaf
Summary: "After Aragorn`s death, Legolas and Gimli brave an uncertain journey into the West." [don't talk to me don't look at me]
On the Cold Hill Side, by @mcvices | words 24k, missing scene & Gimleaf
Summary: "In the end, Gimli thinks, Legolas will steal his heart and sail away with it, and even the wonders of the Glittering Caves are not enough consolation for that loss. But when Aragorn calls for Gimli’s help in dismantling the hidden traps of Orthanc, everything changes." [I don't even know what to say, fell in love with the writing, adored it all, really great dialogues]
The Undying, by Angela | words 20k, old age & pining & slow-burn Gimleaf
Summary: “I was wondering,” Gimli had said at the beginning of it. “Isn't it about time you get started on that boat of yours?” It has been over one hundred years since the War of the Ring. Gimli and a dwarf girl named Mâglah help Legolas build his ship to sail into the west. While they are working, Legolas realizes that there are a lot of things that have been long unexpressed between him and his dearest friend, things that must be said and done before it is too late." [so complete, precious OC, heart-wrenching details and moments]
Seasick, by Longyan | words 3k, growing old & Gimleaf
Summary: "The pull has existed for a long time. It has always been there, just at the back of his mind ― a mere childish curiosity, to see waves break against the shore, to feel fresh breeze in his hair. Still, it was never more than a passing thought, something that would always be drowned out by other, more interesting things. Nothing more, nothing less. The world is bright. Sauron is gone. And Legolas is sure, as long he has Gimli by his side, the water has no power over him. And he is intent on staying forever." [short but strong, like Gimli. Will fuck you up, I kid you not, very powerful shit right here]
what a thing to choose, by coverdinsun (again) | words 4k, post-canon & Arwen stan account & Gimleaf
Summary: "[...] Or: As time appears to be slipping out of his grasp, Legolas must grapple with his fear." [idk I love your little short summaries in the end. another masterpiece, trule wonderful dialogue, some of my fave characterizations in here]
To the sea, by @roselightfairy | words 13k, so much angst & Gimleaf
Summary: "A few decades into their shared lives, Legolas seems to be losing his battle against the sea-longing. The only solution that he can think of is to go to the sea. Of course, Gimli will not let him go alone." [this one hits really really hard, a slap to the face. so much angst yet so beautiful, pay attention to all the tags, prepare your tissues beforehand <3]
Go west, by undomiel (dolcewrites) | words 8k, angst++++ & Gimleaf
Summary: "The Sea has never left Legolas' mind since he first heard the cry of the gulls at Pelargir. As time catches up to the elf, he has to make a choice: to sail to the West, or to stay with his companion, Gimli the dwarf." [Maybe even more angsty than the last one because it touches all the despair and loss and pain]
To be continued!

Terrible Fic Ideas #27: Legolas/Gimli, but make everyone oblivious
Last night I found myself wondering yet again what would it take to have an established relationship between Legolas and Gimli before the Fellowship left Rivendell?
The most obvious way to go about it would be a secret relationship - @roselightfairy does an absolutely beautiful take on this in Words Unspoken - but then I thought: what if Legolas and Gimli's relationship was the biggest scandal of the Third Age, but the Fellowship was made up of oblivious, uninformed idiots?
Just imagine it:
With Mirkwood and Erebor being so close together, it makes sense that Legolas and Gimli would at least know of each other before the Council of Elrond in 3018. After all, Legolas is prince of Mirkwood and, following the Battle of Five Armies, Gimli is sixth in line of succession to Erebor. By the Council, he's third - just as far as Dain Ironfoot was when he inherited.
As highly placed heirs of nearby kingdoms, it also makes sense for Legolas and Gimli to have met before the Council. Perhaps they served as ambassadors to their neighboring kingdoms, or stumbled into each other leading patrols on their shared border, or met as the dwarves of Ered Luin passed by Mirkwood on their way to Erebor.
Regardless of the exact circumstances, Legolas and Gimli meet, fall in love, and marry sometime between 2941 and 2970. They do so openly, much to the horror of their families, and make no attempt to hide their relationship at all once they've worked things out between themselves.
It is the scandal of the Age. Hell, maybe it's the most scandalous, gossiped about marriage in all the history of Middle Earth. There's no way any elf, dwarf, human, or hobbit east of the Misty Mountains and north of the Limlight alive at the time could fail to hear about it. Even after the initial shock dies down, their relationship remains stock fodder for when the gossiping gets slow.
By the time the Council of Elrond rolls around, Legolas and Gimli's relationship is common knowledge. Except: the hobbits don't know a thing about it, The Shire taking little interest in the outside world. Neither does Boromir, being both too young and from too far south. Even Aragorn doesn't realize that this elf and this dwarf are that particular elf and dwarf, as most of the elves he knows remember him as a child and subconsciously try to shield him from the most salacious rumors. Only Gandalf knows the truth.
Legolas and Gimli never try to hide their relationship, but they don't go shoving it in everyone else's face either - and besides, from the outside their old married couple bickering looks like real arguments to everyone else. By the time giving each other comfort becomes more important than not grossing out their traveling companions with PDA, the rest of the Fellowship is drowning in grief because of Gandalf and doesn't really notice - and by the time anyone does, it's just Aragorn at Helm's Deep thinking they're finally getting their act together.
It takes forever for the truth to finally come out, mostly because Legolas and Gimli think everyone already knows. After all, they made no attempt to hide their relationship from anyone. Yes, they tried to be discreet and keep their displays of affection private, but that didn't mean they were trying to hide anything.
Looking back, it should be painfully obvious to the rest of the Fellowship. Excruciatingly obvious - especially while in Lothlorian.
Bonuses include: 1) Pippin saying early on that Legolas and Gimli already bicker like an old married couple so maybe they should help their friends out and play matchmaker, but is shut down by the other hobbits so hard he never mentions it again. 2) Elrond, Galadriel, and Gandalf all saying things that would only make sense if Legolas and Gimli were married, but which the Fellowship continually misinterprets. Gandalf, being a shit stirrer, intentionally tries to make as much of what he says regarding them up for misinterpretation. 3) All of the friends the Fellowship makes along the way - Eomer, Eowyn, Faramir, &c - all learning the truth of the matter early on and figuring that their traveling companions already knew, and so never really seeing the need to mention it either. And when they do, their words are just as misinterpreted.
And that's it. That's all I have, but feel free to adopt this plot bunny. Just link back if you ever do anything with it.

Recommend up to 5 series or multi-chapter fics from 2023 that everyone should read (multi-year WIPs count, if the last update was in 2023).

Recommend up to 5 of your own fics (completed or WIP) from 2023 that everyone should read.
I have decided to include only Tolkien-fics, because that is the majority of what I've read (and written) this year; and because if I did not find some way to restrict myself, I would never be able to narrow things down to list only five, wtfffff.

Ooh thank you so much for tagging me in this @sallysavestheday it was really fun to go back through my bookmarks (and check all the dates whoops) and remember some of the great stories I've read this year!
Lots of Legolas and Gimli in there (shocking no one!) but a couple of Celebrimbor-focused stories and a few other tales as well; and every one of them a gem and a masterpiece. Please go read them all, and leave their authors some love in the comments to close-out this long year!
I shall tag, if any of you have not done this yet already: @bifuriouswaterbender @babybat98 @aroace-moron @storytellingdreamer @estel-of-the-eyrie @roselightfairy @thescrapwitch
