Why You Should Try Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy Part 8: Fun and Easy Character Creation
This is part 8 of a multi-part series of posts about the awesome features of Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy, in no particular order.
Find the earlier parts here:
Part 1 Link: We Worked Hard on It!
Part 2 Link: It's Easy to Learn!
Part 3 Link: It's Easy to GM!
Part 4 Link: It's Easy to GM and Supports Narrative and Roleplay!
Part 5 Link: It Revolutionizes Investigation and Mystery Solving in TTRPGs
Part 6 Link: PCs are Not Just Mystery Solving Automatons
Part 7 Link: Excellent Time-Keeping Mechanics Keep the Pressure On
I talked about Skills in previous parts, and here we will go more in-depth into them, as well as other awesome things that make up a Eureka character.
Skills
As mentioned before, Eureka characters have an all-purpose array of 21 Skills meant to cover just about anything they’re likely to encounter while trying to solve a mystery, with a rating that tells you how good or bad they are at each of these skills. You don’t roll for skill points, nor do you get a set amount of them to distribute. The only rules are that each skill must be set to a rating between -3 and +3, and at the end, they all have to add up to a net 0. This means that for every +3(making them an expert at that skill), they have to have a -3 somewhere else, or three -1s, etc. This can make character creation a little bit like a puzzle, where you slowly uncover just who your PC is as you move their skills around to add up to 0, while still giving you complete control over their strengths and weaknesses.
There are also additional “Write-In” skills, which are more specialized. You can also write in your own skills as Write-In skills if none of the official ones suit your PC. Any Write-In skill has to be set to +1 or higher, and counts for the total.
Traits
In addition to skills, Eureka characters are made up of Traits. These are literally personality traits that have a mechanical effect on that PC’s gameplay, further supporting roleplay. Each PC has 3 Traits by default, but additional Traits, up to 6 total, can be added at the cost of extending how many Investigation Points it costs them to get a Eureka! Point.
Traits can radically change how the PC plays, and of course help define their personality by encouraging and discouraging certain behaviors through bonuses and penalties. Many Traits also provide additional ways of spending Eureka! Points.
Here’s a few examples and a link to a big masterpost of Traits, though at the time of writing this there’s even more Traits than the masterpost shows. You’ll have to download the Eureka rulebook to see them all. (It's linked at the top of this post.)
Truth
A PC’s “Truth” is another mechanic that really fleshes them out in gameplay. It is one of more extra little elements of their personality. It could be a motto they live by, their short temper, their overly trusting nature, etc. The only rule is that it has to be something that would be likely to spur them to action or get them into trouble. Once per Scene, when they say or do something that is in line with their Truth, they gain a +1 bonus to their next 5 skill checks. This keeps your characters acting in-character, and rewards it.
Inventory and Wealth
You might have noticed that "Wealth" is a skill. In short, this skill is rolled when PCs buy something, or when they need to know something about high-society. (It can also be reversed when they need to know things about lower class environments.)
Another thing that Wealth governs is the PC’s inventory items.
Inventory items are determined on a per-scenario basis by rolling for how many Wealth Points can be spent on items before the scenario starts. You’ll get your investigator a house (or equivalent), a vehicle, and whatever else they can afford. Having the right item for the job can save lives, but powerful weapons, fast cars, comfortable homes, etc. can get expensive quick. Just like in real life, rich people generally have an easier time of things, but some of the best moments in our own campaigns have come from PCs struggling with money.
(You also fill out the PC’s Tiers of Fear in character creation but I already talked about that in Part 6.)

Just something I was thinking about today - I really love the different Trainer Classes out there, & have even invented a couple (might share in the future!) I feel like it adds to the character & to the RP part of RPG. >u<
If you didn’t know, Pokémon trainers can have different classes depending on a lot of things - occupation, Type preference, battle strategies, etc. Every region has their own set in the form of NPC’s you battle along the way. Some are gendered, but I think it very easy to just change it to suit your trainer’s identity, or just reimagine it! 🩵
If your trainer(s) have one, please comment / reblog! It’d be fun to know if I’m not the only one who has a class other than just “Pokémon Trainer” lol. XD
#pokemon#trainer classes#rpg classes#for funsies#some of the classes I invented were other weather specialists#Parasol Ladies are pretty fem-coded & tend to just use rain teams ouo;#The competitive scene uses terms like “rain user” “sun user” etc. but I think we can be more creative than that

You make build choices game to game by switching Jobs, learning new spells, acquiring new Special dice, training with new Mentors, winning interesting gear, finding cool Treasure or going on quests to unlock new Job Abilities. Pokemon Horizons + Scarlet and Violet DLC's theory(and headcanons) and small analysis on 4 major characters with their Pokemon and their archetypes. Btw Spoilers for Horizons and SV DLC's; Teal Mask and both parts of Indigo Disk
Hello, everyone, here is Star-Arcana again and here is an addition to @sxmmyspam's post (link is https://www.tumblr.com/sxmmyspam/765188173627375616/i-tell-you-its-totally-done-on-purpose-by?source=share) regarding how Nintendo might have intentionally built these Pokémon for those 4 to create meaninful interactions between them, though I had before their post some of these themes and similarities noticed, so I am not plagarizing here. However for the sake of keeping things brief, I assume most of my audience already knows what Pokemon Horizons as well as Pokemon Scarlet/Violet with it's 3 DLC storyline are, so I ask you better to watch the show and play the DLC, if you are not spoiled already. So without any further do, my small anaylsis:
With the 9th generation, we got for the SV 3 DLC storylines that featured most prominently one of the newest rising stars in the hall of fame for the greatest Pokemon characters ever, that character is Keiran at the top, literally, and he has a sister, Carmine, to the right. However with the 9th generation, the anime side of Pokemon also got after Ash's retirement a new storyline called Horizons, in which a new protagonist carries now the torch and is already massively popular, and becoming one of the newest rising stars in the hall of fame for the greatest Pokemon anime character ever, that character is Liko to the left, and she has a rival that is also an enemy of hers, Amethio, at the bottom.
These characters have diffrent storylines, but some similarities, especially with many of their Pokemon and I also think they can function as representations of classes and archetypes in role-playing and storytelling, primary the classes of warriors and mages:
Liko being the main hero of Horizons has two Pokemon based on mages: Floragato and Hattrem that could evolve into Meowscarada and Hatterene respectivey, with Meowscarada being a magician and Hatterene being a Witch. So Liko fits into the mage archetype, a hero that is magical and fights with her spells to repell evil. Kieran being a character from the Teal Mask and Indigo Disk DLC's shifts from ally to enemy and then back to ally and has two Pokémon that have a lot in common with Liko's, but are based on warriors: Incineroar and Grimmsnarl, with Incineroar being like Meowscarada a cat starter Pokémon and Grimmsnarl being a male counterpart to Hatterene, similiarly how Latios is a male counterpart to Latias. So Kieran fits into the warrior archetype, a friend who is strong and fights with his muscles against evil! These two have with these Pokémon (and without, which I will get in the future to in much greater detail) thematically a lot in common as trainers, since both Cat starters(with a secondary dark typing btw) are also cunning and crafty Pokémon, since both are said to use tricks and underhand tactics to win, as Meowscarada is a magician using illusions and Incineroar is a heel using unruly moves to win. This also works with the two direct Galar counterparts being magical beings based on folklore and fairy tales, hence both have as secondary type, the, well, fairy type. If these two ever meet, then I hope they would interact with each other a lot and their Pokémon as well, given their established similarities, while also being really diffrent in their themeing with their mons; Liko is a Witch, Kieran is a Brawler, which are highly compatible archetypes and balance each other out, like their Pokémon.
Amethio is a major antagonist and opponent of Liko in Horizons, and his two Pokemon are based on knights: Ceruledge and Corviknight, which fits with Amethio's honorable nature as someone who shows mercy towards those in need and is not nearly as brutal as the other explorers are, which is why he is portrayed as more sympathetic as antagonist, than say Spinel, who erased the memories of Liko once and set Amethio up for failure by making it look like he betrayed the explorers, which worked. So with all of this, he is like Kieran of a Warrior archetype, but unlike our ruthless and brutal warrior, Amethio is a chilvarous and honorable warrior, who may fight for the wrong side, but shows mercy when needed. Carmine is a supporting ally in SV's DLC's, but started out as nasty rival with her ace Poltergeist, that evolved into a Sinistcha. Sinistcha is a Pokémon that was used for Tea ceremonies, which were common in Japan and often done by monks, so I give this archetype to Carmine, as she uses a mon based on a ritual for healing and hospitality(an ability that heals the ally when Sinistcha enters the battle). Morpeko is the weakest link, but like all support mon, it is from Galar and has to fit here. It could be seen as a Pokémon using the power of the heavens when fed well, but falling to the dark side when hungry and represents the struggle of a monk dealing with earthly urges. Even so, Carmine fits the archetype of a mage like Liko and is also profficient in healing, but Liko is a kind-hearted and gentle as mage, whereas Carmine is mean-spirited and strident as a mage. With that said, her closest match here is Amethio, since their aces share not just a Ghost type, but similiar origin stories. Ceruledge and Sinistcha (or rather it's previous evolution Poltchageist) are Pokémon that were once simple objects that had the regrets of a human within them, and thus came to existence as will of a deceased person that failed at their task, Ceruledge with probably a heroic quest, Poltchageist/Sinistcha with making the perfect tea. this also reflects their characters as people who often failed in their task, and feuded with Friede, who just defeated them constantly. So maybe they can bond due to their failures and over hating Friede...And since Kights and monks are part of religious and spiritual orders, they fit as the motiv of roleplay classes that serve an honorable, but misguided goals; Amethio wanting to make his grandfather pround, who however cares little about him, while Carmine wants to protect her brother Kieran, only for her to break his trust and furtherly damage his mind. Maybe the two will team up to beat Friede, and since Carmine can be petty and highly prejudice, she would have not much to object against it, she really can go too far.
Also, yes, my fellow Horizons fans, I do ship Liko with Kieran. Sorry Likoroy or Likodot fans, but my true Pokémon ship is LikoKieran or as I call it, Indigo Shipping, since when you mix Blue with Purple, you can get Indigo, and guess what is Indigo? Terapagos and both had interacted with one. They are my true OTP and I will die on that hill!
Tell me your thoughts? Does it hold up, or does it not? repost, write me a response or simply like it, anything is apprieciated.

Joker Out as RPG Job Classes: A Necessary Thread
(Before any of you proceed to reading this, I have some words of warning: The job classes were chosen on an individual basis, and NOT based on ships and common RPG character couple stereotypes. Hence, the choices are not meant to reflect ship dynamics or the boys as part of a couple, but rather each of the boys as individuals.)
Note: I did not assign the Bard class to anyone because…where’s the fun in that? Five bards would be boring. 💀

Bojan Cvjetićanin - Dancer
Charismatic, alluring and outgoing.
An ABSOLUTE charmer. Can make people stop and stare with a single look or move.
Doesn't mind showing off some a lot of skin and wearing a lot of accessories.
Has the most amazing moves and he knows it.
A lover and a fighter. Do not make the mistake of believing his shapely legs are only good for pretty movements - he can kick too, and HARD.

Kris Guštin - Wizard/Sorcerer
Intelligent, elegant and deadly.
Takes his studies seriously, prefers not to cheat in school.
Looks amazing in silks, jewels and flowing outfits! Can wear a wizard hat to further increase his height difference with Bojan.
Prefers to slay from afar, rather than get physical (he's the only one who doesn't arm-wrestle in Dublin). Doesn't need to throw hands to prove a point.
At times, seems like the only brain cell among his friend group. So Done with everything.

Nace Jordan - Paladin
Steadfast, honorable and chivalrous.
Strength personified - strong in every aspect (body, heart and mind). Is undoubtedly able to carry a heavy greatsword like it's nothing.
The definition of protection. Everyone feels safe around Nace and it shows.
Capable of both strong attacking, defending and even healing, reflecting how dependable he is. He's you're man no matter the situation, and will defend his friends until the bitter end.
Are you following religion?

Jan Peteh - Rogue/Assassin
Enigmatic, cunning and intense.
100% a creature of the night and prefers to work on his own. He is like a cat in the dark, and then he is the darkness.
Clever as the devil and twice as pretty, quick-witted and never panics, but also not above using unscrupulous and sneaky methods. Admits to regularly cheating in school.
Nace admits that Jan would be the one to pick the lock in a heist.
Wears dagger and sword themed jewellery.
...or will you die as a punk?

Jure Maček - Dragon Knight
Free-spirited, unrestrained and quick to action.
Has a not-so-secret dream to fly a plane. If he wishes to fly, might as well give him a dragon of his own to fly on and rip through the skies with.
Shares a name with the famous dragon slayer, and has the looks and build of a Targaryen.
Swift, thrilling aerial combat and high jumps suit this bundle of chaos, so he can't cause Kris any headaches on the ground.
....pray he doesn't get motion sick, though.

Hello o/
Would first like to say that I love your comic, and it really gives me something to look forward to every week ^-^ you've inspired me to start writing about *my* PKMN gaming experiences!!
Second: how did you find/decide your trainer class? And if nothing had felt right, would you have come up with a new one? Thanks <3
Cool beans! I hope you have as much fun as I do, although DxP REWRITE is definitely more than just drawing our experiences (& some headcanons) with the games, unlike Sword x Shield or Scarlet x Violet ouo).
—
Hmmmm. So, I chose to identify with the Parasol Lady class YEARS ago - I remember researching Trainer Classes on Bulbapedia & watching all 3 episodes of “What Kind of Pokémon Trainer are You?” on YouTube. I also remember having the option to pick your class in Black / White for your Trainer ID Card (yet another thing they need to bring back!), & the image of the Parasol Lady, surrounded by puddles in her rain gear, just felt right. ☔️
Back then, it was mostly aesthetics - I didn’t really use rain as a strategy, mostly just using the Types they prefer (Water, Flying, &/or Electric). It was only recently (ie. since Ikrit got me to actually use strategy lol) that I started to really teach myself to use it. 🌧️
There are so many classes out there, I’m pretty sure I would’ve found something that stuck - probably one of the many Water type trainers. As it is, Ansy was actually a Nurse at one time, along with trying the Gardener class in Galar after being very inspired by Ramos when she went to Kalos (though she just couldn’t let go of her precious Water types lol - they just helped water the plants XD).
—
As for invented Classes, I actually did invent a couple! One of Ansy’s jobs was a Lifeguard (combining Swimmer with Nurse), & Ikrit’s class, “PKMN Researcher” is kind of a combination of Professor’s Assistant / Aide & Veteran (though he was Dr. Cozmo’s Assistant when he was younger).
I also was working on inventing more Weather classes, though I got sidetracked. 😅
I feel like a Trainer Class can be just about anything you could imagine it to be. It could be about your job, your age, your hobbies / interests, or really anything! Just so long as your Pokémon &/or battling style can reflect it in some way.
Musicians tend to use Pokémon with voice moves (Hyper Voice, Sing, etc.) or Aroma Ladies use floral Grass Pokémon with moves like Aromatherapy or Sweet Scent (though one could also see them using certain Fairy Pokémon like Florges or Aromatisse as well). Parasol Ladies use weather (rain) teams, which could just be types that benefit from rain, &/or include ones with Abilities that benefit from rain (Rain Dish, Hydration, Swift Swim, Dry Skin).
Let’s not forget the Double Battle classes! There’s Twins of course, but also more clever ones like the “Brains & Brawn” duo (Black Belt & Psychic, who showed up that one time in DxP REWRITE, hehe)
I personally love Trainer Classes because it adds another layer of role playing, like classic RPG classes. But if nothing else, you can just as happily have the default “Pokémon Trainer” class, which is literally whatever you like! ^_^
#ask#pokemon#RPG classes#pokemon trainer#I’m not sure what Ansy & Ikrit’s duo class would be#I mean their canon one (not the adorable Kimono Couple class I drew that one time lol)#I’d love it if I could reference the sky somehow#Since they both love the sky (Ansy likes weather while Ikrit likes stars)#I wonder what kind of fun strategies they could use together?
