I made a little game in RPG Maker for a few game jams! It acts as a pilot for a new story concept.
Syd is a newer employee at a retro game store. At the end of their shift, things get weird, and the other part of the job comes into play. . .
This is a small little project that could realy use some love if you can give it a play. I love feedback and hearing what other people think!
Also, Syd is voiced by Alexis Boone, and Static (and their ghosts) is voiced by Hinotori. They did a great job! Go follow them!

Me terminé ghost trick
He podido terminar ghost trick hoy y estoy dos puntos cansada.

Hi~ I also an artist and I've been follow you for a while. Know you since the time you draw cute drawing to sexy adorable girl with positive messages >vO I love reading them, thank you for always bring on positive, happy messages on my new feed ❤️
And I surprise how can you draw 3 pieces everyday, that's so fast >o< I wish I can draw fast like that. I feel like drawing human like you draw now it's very hard (the anatomy is my weakness >^< your drawing is so good). I wonder how much time you spend in a day for drawing? Does your main job is being a fulltime artist?
Hey hey! 😊 First off, thank you so much for your kind words! 💖💖💖 It really means a lot to hear that my art brings some positivity to your feed ;w; That’s exactly what I aim for, so knowing it resonates with you makes me super happy! 🥹💕
As for drawing three pieces a day, phew, it definitely took me time to build up that speed! At first, I was way slower like my energy level is very low, but with consistently getting my mind into the work mode, I found ways to streamline my process. Over time, I got better at simplifying certain details, trusting my instincts, and letting go of perfectionism when it wasn’t needed. Some days, I can knock out art fast, and other days, I take my time like if i have a commission so dont stress about speed! It naturally improves as you keep drawing fr. ✨
But I totally get you on anatomy being a challenge! It’s honestly one of those never-ending learning curves for me, and I still study and refine my approach even tho my proportions are wayyy off and make no sense. The best trick I’ve found is focusing on flow rather than stiff details, if it feels good to me then I will go ahead with it, I know ill never be 100% all the time but I do fin that gesture drawing helps a ton 💖
As for time spent drawing daily, ehh it varies, but I’d say anywhere from several hours to the whole day depending on what I’m working on. Some pieces come together quickly like within an hour (When im livestreaming my work on youtube), while others take longer. I’m always juggling that balance really
And yes, at this point, I do consider myself a full-time artist! It’s a mix of art commissions, social media content things, and other projects like the Tato TTRPG and rpg maker game that keep me going. It’s a lot of work, but I love it, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything! That said, it’s totally okay to take things at your own pace whether you’re full-time or just making art for fun, what matters most is that you enjoy the process. its a thing im still learning 💕

A Brief Look into "Ten no Oshigoto"
So, a while ago, anon asked me if I knew anything about a game of Kumazaki Shinya's (general director of the Kirby series) called "Heaven's Work" or "Ten no Oshigoto."
While anon didn't give themselves a clearer identity in their followup, simply wrote to let me know that they had sent in some helpful information before (thanks for that btw!) they and another returned with links to a Japanese Youtube Let's Play by Ochanaito that allowed me a greater look into just what this game actually was!
(Also thanks to Papen for their NOTE post who I also sourced heavily for this)

So, many of you may be familiar with the RPG Maker series of games. While most of the popular entries have come out in English, Japan had many more of these games come out, including a few entries for the Playstation 1! Given the highly customizable nature of the PC ones, you might think that making a big custom game on the Playstation would be very difficult...and you'd be right!

(One of the classic dev tricks of the older entries was to make a custom menu by building a map that LOOKED enough like a menu and turning the protagonist into a cursor who teleported from location to location. It was actually super clever!)
"Ten no Oshigoto" was an RPG Maker 3 game created by Kumazaki when he was 20 years old, 3 years before he would enter HAL Labs as a designer. It was not the first independent game he tried to make. In fact, it was the 2nd game out of 4 (?) he had a part in creating! What distinguishes "Ten no Oshigoto" (outside of the fact that it filled up a STAGGERING 13 memory cards worth of data in a time where most other games took 3-4) is that it actually won an award!!
See, another thing that distinguishes the Japanese and English RPG Maker communities is that parent company ASCII often had competitions and gave out prizes to the best RPG Maker games of that season/year! A few of those games that won, ASCII would even go on to assist in porting to and publish on consoles, like the PS game "Palette." Now, the prize Kumazaki's "Ten no Oshigoto" won is listed as simple a "consolation" prize, so it obviously wasn't on the fast track to publishing, but it was enough to draw some eyes to it!
(As for the English side of things, well, the RPG Maker community, and even the "Maker" part of the title came entirely out of the Russian pirate/hacker scene, with several of the engines being mass distributed illegally and many of the non-JP "classics" being made on pirate copies of 2000/2003 before it was finally licensed in English - explaining why we never had contests and cash prizes. In fact, it took a while to work some of the piratical tendencies out of its larger user base ^^ Sadly, EN RPG Maker has now gone full late-stage capitalist: while the Japanese community *still* frequently produces free resources, including art, music, and scripts, the EN community, thanks to a few high profile folks setting the bar with payments for everything, has developed a culture of asking people to pay nearly as much or more for add-on scripts than the actual engine itself costs I'm not salty la la la)
AHEM!!
So, what IS "Ten no Oshigoto?"
Well, I didn't watch through the whole 20 video series (not yet) just far enough to get a feel for the basic game play loop, and I have to say, while it's terribly silly (!!) it is also a dastardly impressive game, especially knowing the tools Kumazaki had to work with!

The story of "Ten no Oshigoto" has you playing a god named "Ten" (His name means "Heaven," haha!) who is the young, lazy, unaccomplished son of Zeus, king of the gods!

The angelic Ten spends his days tinkering with robots (there is a joke where he says that all that's left is to paint the monitor with mustard, turning it a gold color, before he is surprised, bumps it and the robot explodes fantastically; a bizarre, comical little scene that is repeated almost word for work with the king of the bad guys later on!)
He is called to see his father by this weird little flying hippo/angel/kirby thing that serves as your companion throughout the rest of the adventure named... "Hengel?" "Hangel?" "Engel?" something, and told that he's finally being given a planet of his own to be god over! He just has to clear it of the "Waruma" ("Evilies") and plant the seeds of humanity to really get the planet started!

Not too long after that, Ten meets another strange companion, "Sebas-chan" (a pun on "Sebastian?") another god who looks like a naked man wearing a lime-green full body spandex suit. Like I said. The game is...terribly silly. It is fully of goofy dialogue, with most of the gods and monsters talking in silly regional accents and characters' priorities being all over the place. Ten himself is a bit lazy and at times a coward, but he does pull through when needed!
What's truly impressive about the game is how it is put together. You see, it's something of an action game, and I want everyone to know, while it's not unusual for clever folks to use RPG Maker as a shell to create all kinds of games now, making an action game in RPG Maker 3?! That's a huge challenge. And even then, you can definitely see the seams in "Ten no Oshigoto." When you encounter an enemy, you can walk up to it and unleash a weak physical attack, trading blows.
However as you start off with only 3 Hearts, this is not recommended. Instead, these glyphs show up on random places on the map that charge up Ten's magic and allow him to use a more devastating magic attack or heal himself! So, battle is a mix of keep-away and hide-and-seek till you can gather the power you need.

One of the first boss battles puts you up against a reaper Waruma who splits into three! You have to attack the main body to do any damage. Staying close and keeping track of which is which leaves you vulnerable to his powerful "Tri-Attack" which can instantly bring you down to 1 Heart! While running all over looking for glyphs means you're liable to lose track of which one to use your single attack on!

It's all quite clever! There's a simple location-based map and I have to say, the scene right after meeting Sebas-chan where he takes you to this oddly high-tech sci-fi observatory station and shows you the various locations where you'll need to purge Waruma with the big bad King Waruma on screen gave me MASSIVE flashbacks to Return to Dream Land and looking for the Starcutter's parts!!

(Tell me if you've seen this before! ...O-Okay, maybe not like THIS but...)
I didn't get far enough into the LP to see if there are any of the cosmic/body horror chops we know Kumazaki for. This game really seems to play more to his sense of cheesy non-sense humor, at least so far! (Of course, he was just 20 when he made it) but even if it's silly, "Ten no Oshigoto" is clearly made with a lot of love!

TLDR, if I were in charge of HAL Labs back then and I saw what he'd been able to do in just this one game? I'd have hired him as a designer on the spot, no question! He's clearly a fitting successor to Sakurai, and even his old indie game work demonstrates that imo!
-
All that said, I don't have much else to add about "Ten no Oshigoto" at the moment. I suppose if I ever get around to finishing Ochanaito's Let's Play, I might come back to this post if I can think of more that I feel expands on the positive picture this has painted of him so far.
Altogether, I *do* think that this is an interesting piece of Kumazaki's (and to a lesser but not irrelevant degree) the Kirby series' history! It's not often we get to see the things our favorite directors made during their early forays into the "work" of creation! ^_-

Erguzam

P. montivagus image in the public domain, accessed at flickr here
[As the most speciose and successful terrestrial animal lineage, insects have all sorts of interesting life history strategies and evolutionary adaptations. The trick is, making them things that can be viable in play for a tabletop rpg. Parasitoid reproduction is very common, and gets applied to lots of creatures that aren't insects. The more arcane life cycles are cool, but difficult to make relevant to players. The behavior of slave making ants is not something I ever have seen before in an RPG. It does have some pop culture impact; the ants in the B-movie Empire of the Ants are slave-makers, but my version leans much more heavily into biological weirdness.]
Erguzam CR 4 N Magical Beast This creature appears to be a red ant the size of a wolf. Its mandibles are smooth and curved inward, and its front feet end in broad tarsi with hooks and spines. It has no sting, but instead a small nozzle at the end of its abdomen.
An erguzam is a giant ant that lives as a parasite on farms and ranches. Rather than simply raiding humanoid settlements as some other species of giant ants do, erguzams instead take over the settlements completely, using chemicals to enslave its denizens and force them to work for the ants’ benefit. An erguzam colony begins when a queen, accompanied by a few soldiers from its previous colony, finding a farmstead and enslaving its residents. While the queen lays eggs, the soldiers fan outward in order to find more workers to serve the colony. An erguzam exerts its control over its slaves through trophallaxis—it feeds its victims a slurry of drugs that make its mind docile and pliable, and make its senses sharp enough to receive chemical cues from their exploiters. People so enslaved work on the farm growing crops and raising livestock, fixing buildings and refitting them to better suit their masters’ anatomy, raising the young of the erguzams and helping to raise any slaves too young to take care of themselves. They may even trade and engage with other people, all the while acting as cover for their monstrous masters. An erguzam’s chemicals cause humanoids to age rapidly, forcing erguzams to raid regularly in order to replenish their workforce, or to exploit longer lived species like dwarves and elves.
Erguzam soldiers do not take slaves on their raids with them, relying on their own power to fight. They preferentially try to capture smaller people, including children, as well as less heavily armored targets. Foes wearing heavy armor are more likely to simply be slain, cut in two with their scything mandibles or sprayed with the acid they can fire from their abdomens. Already enslaved victims submit to being fed their mind-altering drugs willingly, but when capturing slaves anew, the erguzams grab them with their front legs and pull their mouths open in order to give them their first feeding. If a creature is unaffected, it is butchered before the erguzam moves onto the next target. If it succumbs, the erguzam retreats from battle with its new slave.
Erguzam Queens Unlike the queens of other giant ants, erguzam queens retain their full mobility throughout their lives. An erguzam queen is an erguzam with the giant and advanced simple templates, and it can use its enslave ability at will. An erguzam queen’s acid spray deals 5d8 points of damage, and all erguzams within 30 feet of an erguzam queen gain a +2 morale bonus on all attack and damage rolls. An erguzam queen is a CR 6 monster.
Erguzam CR 4 XP 1,200 N Medium magical beast Init +6; Senses darkvision 60 ft., Perception +10, scent
Defense AC 17, touch 12, flat-footed 15 (+2 Dex, +5 size) hp 37 (5d10+10) Fort +6, Ref +6, Will +3 Resist acid 10; Weakness verminous
Offense Speed 50 ft., climb 20 ft. Melee bite +8 (2d6+3), claws +8 (grapple) Special Attacks acid spray, enslave
Statistics Str 17, Dex 15, Con 14, Int 2, Wis 14, Cha 11 Base Atk +5; CMB +8 (+12 grapple); CMD 20 (28 vs. trip) Feats Blind-fight, Improved Initiative, Skill Focus (Perception) Skills Climb +15, Perception +10, Stealth +7
Ecology Environment temperate plains Organization solitary, pair, raiding party (3-8) or hive (4-24 plus 1 queen) Treasure incidental
Special Abilities Acid Spray (Ex) As a standard action, an erguzam can spray acid in a 15 foot cone dealing 5d6 points of acid damage (Reflex DC 14 half). An erguzam can use this ability three times per day, but must wait 1d4 rounds between uses. The save DC is Constitution based. Enslave (Su) As a move action, an erguzam can vomit a chemical slurry into the mouth of a pinned, helpless or willing humanoid. The humanoid must succeed a DC 16 Will save or be charmed by the erguzam and by all erguzams of the same hive for 1 week. Unlike a charm person spell, humanoids do not gain a bonus to their saving throw if it is threatened or attacked by an erguzam. A creature that succeeds its saving throw is immune to the enslave ability of that erguzam for 24 hours. Humanoids so affected are friendly to these erguzams and are compelled to work on their behalf. An erguzam can give these charmed humanoids simple instructions from a range of 60 feet with chemical signals as a free action, and can sense whether a creature is affected or not by the enslave ability of any erguzam from its hive. A humanoid affected by an erguzam’s enslave ability ages one year per week it is affected. An erguzam can use this ability three times before it has to return to its queen to replenish its supply. This is a mind-influencing poison effect. The save DC is Constitution based with a +2 racial bonus. Verminous (Ex) An erguzam is treated as both a magical beast and vermin for the purposes of spells and effects.

Little Goody Two Shoes

Just finished playing through the game, and wanted to share my thoughts on it! If you're interested in playing it, just do it. like with ghost trick, just get into it without reading anything about it.
Okay, so. I really liked it. It reminded me of those old RPG Maker horror games that were popular when I was a kid.
Now, about the story. The themes (!!!). Elise, being a lesbian in the 19th century is CENTRAL for her character. The way the endings where her wish is granted outright tell you she could never feel happinness or love again after sacrificing her loved one, and instead marrying a man that, although rich and giving her what she wished for all her life, couldn't fill the void left in her heart. How she dies in all three endings feeling the most absolute, heart wrenching despair after losing not only the love of her life, but the only light she had in the world. How the demon fulfilled her wish at the cost of not only the life of Freya, Lebkuchen or Rozenmarine, but Elise's too (made especially obvious in Freya's ending, where her father makes a tomb not only for her, but for Elise too, who he considered a daughter and gave them his blessing).

This theme of her losing agency over her own body and life is shown in the endings where she fails into Walpurga's trap, taking over Elise's body. Walpurga says she can finally live the life of a human, and especifically delights in her being able to give birth, something Elise is shown to be completely horrified about in the ending cards and and in the dinner with Him. There, he asks for her firstborn, to which she retorts with "And how do you know if I'll ever have kids".
Instead, in the endings where she backs down last minute and doesn't finish the deal, Elise is living her best life, as happy as she could be with her beloved and is able to pursue her dreams of being rich through other means. Though these endings are sweet, they serve another purpose: how pointless the deal really was. How Elise, consumed by greed, was able to sacrifice the woman she loved the most in order to achieve her dreams.
Now, this doesn't mean Elise is a monster or a despicable person; after all, every ending where she sacrifices the Good Company shows her living a life of regret, seeking redemption or being absolutely miserable, haunted by her nightmares and visions of Him reminding her of what she did. She's actually a kind person that, although mean sometimes, isn't looking to do harm on others.
And that makes all the more horrible. That this good person could be capable of doing something like that. That her character, her moral can be corrupted, twisted into doing what she did in pursuit of her dreams. The Golden Maidens, Granny Holle and Father Hans also show this, that this darkness isn´t only inside Elise, but could be inside anyone. However, as shown by the happier endings, this isn't a "there's an inherent evil inside everyone" type of story, but it actually says that this darkness, this temptation can be fought against. Wether it is for the "greater good", as shown with what Father Hans does, or in pursuit of one's dreams, as shown with the Maidens, it is something one must and can resist. And I think that's beautiful.
That's the end of my rant. Wrote this in one sitting so sorry if it doesn't make sense haha.

When you first start your art career how long did it take for you to grow in popularity? And how did you manage to do it?
You're not going to like this, but growing even a little bit in popularity (and though I'm flattered, I am VERY far from being a popular artist) - it is pure luck.
A lot of my original work still gets ignored, as well as my drawings for other fandoms. So... Draw what you like, and people will see it. Don't get discouraged.
I'd say work on your stuff for you, as people won't know what they're missing if you never share it. Which... Is advice I need to listen to more myself.
Okay - a lot of rambling below.
I drew a lot in my life, but I actually considered myself to be an artist starting while I was in middle school - which was a while ago.
I've been drawing for 18 years now, mostly self taught. Actually... I still have very first digital art. I don't delete a lot of my old accounts or work either, as I always like to go back to it to see how far I've come.
There's no way to guarantee it, and as quick as popularity comes, it will fade. Do not count on it, and instead focus on making something with quality. The more love and work you place into something, the more it shows. Especially now, when a lot of the actual industry feels soulless, people are looking at fan works and smaller creations for that heart that corporations destroy.
I'll never be in a position to make art my career, but I am enjoying what I do and drawing itself never burns me out. My actual job might wear me down physically, but my brain is always running on ideas for my AU here as well as my own original project. Which... Maybe one day, I'll be able to release that as an RPG Maker game.
You're going to have a hard time with art, but with every struggle, you can come out stronger with a few new tricks up your sleeve to make your projects better.
You've got this. I believe in you!
Your art is already nicely done - you can do it!
