Being as it wasn't him who hurt reader, it was easy to overlook the fact of how similar he was to the old Gojo she knew before it became a shit show

yeah. freckles boy isn’t that great of a person. maybe he tried but it didn’t work out; u dunno why but u keep seeing gojo in him— hints of satoru in ur life. like that stinky cologne he thinks is kinda cool but rlly doesn’t smell too good on ur bfs drawer, or the way he takes his coffee. honestly, if u squint, it almost seems like freckle boy is tryna copy gojo in a way…? but u don’t like thinkin abt him so u don’t blink an eye.

fast forward u broke up with freckle boy because something or other; the point is, u really didn’t feel anything with him. there might’ve been a spark, but it was really only artificial and had no wind to fan the flames. and since u got together gojo’s been distant; his smile seems dimmer and there’s always this faraway; foggy look that makes the brilliant azure of his eyes seem cloudy gray. but then ur catching up with him again and at some random frat party you get drunk and ur sense is inhibited and— u end up kissing gojo… oops.

so then u kinda enter this fwb state with him. and.. he’s pretty cool, right? he’s kinda evrything u want in a guy— tall, pretty, cool, strong, handsome, charming— it’s a package deal. but there’s also this… rift, between the two of you. see, ever since gojo lost u the first time, he’s always been so scared of pushing u away. so u stay fwb because he doesn’t wanna lose u again in case he’s feelin more than you are. but his heart doesn’t skip a beat when he sleeps with other girls and his chest doesn’t tighten like it does with u when he gets mouthfuls of fruity gloss from kissing other girls. but he forces himself to keep this wall up between the two of u because he just can’t risk losing you a third time.

it sucks for u too, though! gojo’s just a bit too dense to see it. whether it’s in his own nature, or he’s faking it. it’s probably the latter, but that’d mean he’s not being genuine again, n you don’t wanna think about it. but you’re gettin comfy with him and so is he, and you really do whole heartedly believe he’s changed this time, and for good. and it’s true! he has. but not in the way you thought. apparently, he’s exchanged being an ass with an unreachable ego to a pinch more genuine, but still an ass. it’s proved when u get to his apartment one rainy day ready to spend the weekend w/ him for a study date, but there’s clothes on the floor. dresses n stockings and a frilly blouse that you definitely think (or hope) don’t belong to gojo. unfortunately, your suspicions are confirmed when you lay eyes on the tangle of people on his bedroom through the crack in the door— this time, it’s your turn to run in a hurry. turns out, he got comfortable with you— all in the wrong way, thinking it’d be okay to sleep around. except he gives chase— after pulling on a pair of pants, of course.

eventually he catches up to you; you hate those stupidly long legs. catches your wrist and forces you to face him. in front of a chick fil a, nonetheless. he gets an overwhelming sense of deja vu— but he’s forcibly snapped out of it when je realizes you’re crying. and damn, you look gorgeous, and he wishes it would rain because the sunlight falls around you like liquid gold, framing your pretty face and reflecting prisms of rainbow in your tears.

once again, he doesn’t get it. why are you crying? it’s not like you were really serious or labeled, right…? and the entire reason you’d stayed that way was to avoid somethin like this. but gojo slowly comes to the realization that he’s fucked up big time— he has been since day 1. really, he should’ve found somebody cheaper to chase— you stole his heart and his pride, making him awkwardly and stiffly apologize to you in front of a fast food restaurant on some random crossing next to a train station. it’s only tense because he doesn’t really know how to apologize— he doesn’t have much experience with it, and for that he blames his ego.

but even so, he’s not ready for those big, sappy love confessions yet. you always made him feel so weird— correction: you still do. so you walk away somewhere between fwb and strangers. it’s always one step forward and two steps back with gojo. but maybe, just maybe— he can slowly rebuild your trust with some patience, empathy, and a lot of genuine love that he’s yet to realize he’s been nursing in his heart for you since the first time he laid eyes on you.

did y’all just not read R’s POV before they jump off the balcony?? the desperation they feel to stay relevant. the total willingness to put the amusement and adoration of strangers before their own well-being. the detail about how they won’t even allow themselves to look for MC because they know what they’re doing is stupid and dangerous but they just HAVE to do it. their self-worth is completely tangled up in their fame.

it’s wrong, it’s misguided - but it’s not evil. it’s complex. it’s devastating. it’s showing us that the mistakes R makes / is going to make don’t come from a place of wanting to cause others pain or even being indifferent to that pain - it comes from a place of trying to relieve their OWN pain. “hurt people hurt people” and all that.

it’s such a brief POV but it packs a serious punch. it reveals so much about R’s character and the motivations for their choices going forward. it’s excellent writing and, if you didn’t understand it, that is completely your loss.

I don't remember why but it was a bit annoying. Anyway, I threw darts at people all night under the excuse of being drunk so that was a blast. Let's win the next season so I can do that again!"

🌂 "I don't drink anymore, unless it's a special occasion. This was a special occasion, so I took the team to a bar 20 minutes away from the stadium that I'd heard good things about before. Safe to say we weren't disappointed. I just-" He stops for a moment. "I had a horrible hangover. Everyone was acting strange in the group chat as well. I hope I haven't done anything stupid..."

Case 70 Lily!! This isn't me asking you to come up with what she'd be like; I'm just using your askbox to think aloud because you're the official wormblr case 70 poster.

Anyway, back to Lily. She canonically triggers while touching her sister! And her sister is also going through a trigger-worthy event at the same moment: getting hit by a train! All you gotta do to make it work is make them twins (which also makes Lily's family situation even more fucked up).

Could be the first case of a case 70 cluster (suuuuper fucked up if May and Homer get pulled into the body sharing, but they probably wouldn't (although Homer was also touching Lily's sister when she triggered, so who knows?)). Assuming the body sharing is just Lily and her sister, then May and Homer get the same powers as in canon, since it's still the same trio of shards.

Lily's sister gets…hmm. There are elements of striker, brute, trump, master, tinker, and shaker there. So let's dig into her background. Why did she end up homeless when Lily didn't? Age probably was a big factor in canon, but that's not an option now that they're twins. So I'm thinking she's kind of the Byron to Lily's Tristan. Lily causes problems, but she's also fun, and people like her. Her sister is quieter, more withdrawn, but also angrier, and prone to occasionally lashing out. Side note: I can't keep calling her "Lily's sister" so I'm gonna use the name Kaiya came up with: Holly. So Lily and Holly are in foster care, Lily indirectly causes a situation that pisses Holly off enough to lash out at someone; I'm thinking an older boy is flirting with Lily, who's encouraging it because she's getting something or other out of it. Holly thinks he's a creep (he is), and kicks him in the balls or something. Lily gets mad, everyone takes Lily's side, Holly gets in trouble, it goes on her record, and a little while later Lily gets placed with a new foster family, but they refuse to take Holly. That's the last straw for Holly, and she runs away and ends up homeless. This is when she's 12 probably. She meets Homer (who's younger in this AU) and they help each other get by.

Skip forward a bit, she sees Lily on the subway platform, she gets hit with some kind of power by some bored asshole (as a random example, maybe a power that forces people to commit to ideas they consider, but wouldn't normally do), she attacks Lily, Homer steps in to try and stop her, she gets hit by the train, everyone triggers. And May is there too I guess lol.

So, looping back to her power. I said there were elements of striker, brute, trump, master, tinker, and shaker. I'm gonna ignore the tinker and master possibilities, because it's too different from Lily's power. I'm also gonna set aside the brute and trump parts, but we'll get back to those. So: striker/shaker. Like Lily, Holly can touch an object (but not a person) and spread an effect across it. It probably spreads faster than Lily's power, and can go further. Like Lily, she sets a timer for how long it'll last, and then it vanishes when it hits that point. Instead of turning objects into weapons that can cut through anything, Holly's power eats away at the object it's on, destroying it no matter what it's made out of, and cutting through any powers protecting it. When she swaps with Lily, the power spreads slower (or stops if it's already past the limits of Lily's power) and switches to the cutting effect. When Lily switches back to Holly, anything her power is effecting starts destroying whatever it's on. Going back to the brute and trump aspects, whenever Holly switches out with Lily, she's healed and any powers effecting her are nullified. Lily does not get those benefits when she swaps out. Holly also has the same secondary thinker powers as Lily, though her accuracy power might be weaker.

A pattern in Holly's life is lashing out at others and ending up in a worse situation herself, so her power mirrors that by destroying her environment, but not being very useful as a weapon unless she's dropping buildings on people or carving out the floor under them, which is also going to hurt her. She can survive whatever harm she inflicts on herself, but only by swapping out and giving Lily the spotlight.

I haven't given much thought yet to how including Holly in the cluster changes the personality bleed, or everyone's trajectories in life. Probably Lily still wants to join the Wards, Homer wants to stick with Holly (who probably wants to stick with him too, depending on how much she blames him for ending up sharing a body with her sister), and Homer would be Wards age in this AU, so possibly all three of them join the Wards together (and then some poor schmuck has to figure out what the fuck to do with a power like Homer's). I'm not sure what May does.

Wow, this ended up being way longer than I planned. Whoops 😅

Oh, one last note! Lily is extremely gay and Holly is extremely straight, for more Vera parallels to make them miserable.

But I really do like this. This is a really good idea! Filling out Holly as a character is really cool, and I feel like not doing it was a missed opportunity for Ward. My only question is why she has to be hit by a power. That seems like kind of a... weak point? in the backstory. I can see how it's essential to the Trump aspect of their power, plus she's not normally angry enough to attempt murder so we need something to give her a final push, but it seems hard to justify some random master cape just happening to be there and just happening to hit holly with their power out of boredom...

This is a deep cut, but an old snip by OxfordOctopus called Cherished Father has an interesting idea that I think might be relevant here. So in it, Danny Hebert was a parahuman (named antipathy). He had a power that was theorized by wildbow (link here). He could, in essence, cause people and animals in a very wide area (almost an entire city) to go into a berserker rage and attack a target he chose. In the snip, he used this power to create mobs of, like, (metaphorically) pitchfork & torch wielding murderers sweeping the street to find his target. However, if someone was affected by his power and was nowhere near his target, they'd just feel a more general rage towards anything, making them more prone to lashing out.

So, my idea is that a parahuman with a really wide ranging power similar to antipathy, that could affect maybe the entirety of NYC, or maybe just whatever borough lily & holly were in, that caused a rage towards a particular target, or just made people way more prone to violence if the target wasn't nearby. And the target wasn't nearby, so Holly just felt a general aggression pushing her towards violence when she wouldn't have otherwise considered it.

one thing I've seen you play with in your writing both in moon knight and in the star wars roleswap canon crossover is characters being brutally honest to/about different parts of themselves as a way of externalizing the kind of self-critical double standard that usually only exists inside a person's head. it's a really fun and juicy concept to chew on :) the coffee machine bit in twilight on owl creek bridge also scratches this itch, it's delicious to see characters forced to be vulnerable about their most deeply held beliefs when pushed to the breaking point and you write that kind of climax in a very satisfying way <3

I love this ask. No joke, the roleswap/canon crossover exists because I kept on reading fanfics where Obi-Wan meets his younger self and he's, like, nice to him. No. Obi-Wan has a devoted fan club of haters but nobody in the galaxy is a greater Obi-Wan hater than Obi-Wan. And I swear that the only person Obi-Wan would hate more than Obi-Wan is Obi-Wan aged 13. Who do YOU hate more? Yourself? Or yourself, from when you were thirteen?????

I agree that it's really satisfying when characters are completely peeled open, but it does have to be carefully done. You have to wait for as long as possible before you get there. Every time you think that it's time for the character to come clean and say what they mean, it is not. You have to escalate and push up the tension and continuously have this denial cause more and more problems. I love the identity porn trope, but you HAVE to keep the charade going for as long as you physically could. If something is fixed, it has to break something else. If a question is answered, it has to raise five more questions. This is what makes the final reveal satisfying.

The coffee pot moment is unsettling and eerie because it doesn't do that - the worst truths are being openly said with no prompting in the break room, the buried and unsaid is being said, and Fox is being forced to hear it. Fox has reached his cracking point, and everything that's gone unsaid is rushing out. Because Leia is there, and she's not the type to let anything go unsaid - except, of course, for the biggest thing at that moment that she couldn't admit. It was Leia who pushed Fox to his breaking point, and it was Fox who brought Leia towards acceptance. Thanks for reading!
