Toriel slander trending again? Color me shocked

I’m not even a little surprised to see Toriel (a maternal figure) suddenly getting backlash across multiple platforms.

The Dreemurr family dynamic in UT is already emotionally dense the more you sit with it, but Toriel, while often beloved is still often flattened in fandom into a one-dimensional “overprotective mom” trope. At first glance? Sure. But there’s so much more going on there.

One thing I think fandom consistently overlooks is that Toriel Dreemurr is severely depressed. And that’s something she actually shares with Sans (beyond their shared love of puns)

We know from UT that Toriel didn’t abandon her people right after the death of her children. She stayed. She left only when Asgore declared war. That’s what broke her. Even Flowey tells us that Toriel retrieved Chara’s body and gave them a proper burial before isolating herself in the Ruins. There, she ends up caring for not one, but six more human children. And ends up carrying six more deaths.

And yet when we, as Frisk, fall into the Ruins, Toriel is still kind. Still warm. Still trying. She tries to keep her distance, but ultimately she cares too much. She begs us to stay. She fights us, but if we spare her, she lets us go. Like?? That’s already a deeply complex character.

We also know from Gerson that she was once a serious ruler. And then you have the nose nuzzling championship trophy at Asgore’s house. She’s loving. She’s strict. She’s grieving. She’s lost almost everything, but she never stops trying to love.

But it’s in DR where we finally get to see Toriel outside the grief.

She has college memories. A social history. She’s described by Rudy as “fuzzy n’ sweet on the outside, a TOTAL NUT on the inside.” She can be judgmental (whose mom isn’t, honestly?) but we also see how much she cares about Kris. She reads parenting books. She becomes the primary caregiver after her separation from Asgore. She’s doing her best while juggling divorce, a full-time job, and a household.

And yeah, she misses stuff. Like the bullying. But if you’ve ever known a single working mom IRL, this is very real.

Parents can love you deeply and still not know everything happening in your world. Especially teens like Kris, who are actively withdrawing.

And then Chapter 4 hits.

People are divided on the ending, but I think it was brilliant. We go from high stakes cosmic weirdness back to Kris’s reality.

Their mom is having fun… without them. And it HURTS.

But that’s not the full picture. That’s Kris’s perspective.

If you’re a teen of divorce, or any kid with a single parent who finally starts to move on, yeah, It sucks. It feels like a betrayal. Because you can’t yet see the complexity. You can’t understand that your mom is her own person, trying to find joy again.

Because to you, she’s just your mom. And you feel left behind.

tl;dr: Toriel is one of the most layered characters in the Undertale/Deltarune universe. She’s grieving, trying, sometimes failing, always loving. She doesn’t deserve the hate, if anything she deserves empathy.

Some stuff about them!! Just a little thing about their future/what they want to be. But… i’m gonna ramble some more in this post, just some info about how or why they arrived at Bullworth in the first place!

Marcus-

Marcus arrived at Bullworth for a couple of reasons, but they all really tie together. He was a homeschooled little rich boy up until his early high school years, so Bullworth was a complete 180 from what he was used to. Being an already anti-social child, plus being homeschooled for most of his education did not help his steadily declining care for social interaction. His father noticed this (a little late, however) and after long discussions… Marcus was sent off to Bullworth. It was less of a punishment, his father said, and more of a way to meet other people, something out of his normalcy— ‘troubled’ kids of different backgrounds, and such. Marcy couldn’t disagree more.

Rudy-

Rudy is a little bit of the opposite, he was sent there for ‘disciplinary’ reasons. It was a way to keep him in line. His parents sent him to Bullworth because they already assumed the worst for his future. Sure, Rudy was an easily peer pressured kid, got into a bit of trouble over acting like a jackass because his friends did—some times going out to loiter in some random country hicks part of the woods, which inevitably got him and his shitty friends caught. Eventually, his mistakes added up one by one and his parents felt like they’ve lost control of him. So, a strict boarding school was the best way to go. Plus, extra time away from home.

Vohn-

Vohn obviously didn’t stay in Bullworth for too long, but he came for a bit of a ‘re-start’ of sorts. Once his mother got a new higher paying job, they took that chance to send him to somewhere different—Bullworth seemed pretty fine. His school life had always been a little rougher, making friends was just about as hard as finding a piece of hay in a needle stack at his old school, and Bullworth was just about the same in the end. Vohn became more homesick whilst stuck in the boys dorms, that combined with regular high-school burn out KILLED him. It was not the freshest of starts.

The tires of Y/N’s car crunched over the gravel as she pulled into the Outer Banks set parking lot, the familiar hum of the engine settling into silence as she turned the key. A sigh slipped past her lips. The drive from Charleston wasn’t bad—she actually liked road trips—but after a full week in North Carolina visiting family, exhaustion clung to her bones. More than anything, she missed him.

FaceTime calls and late-night texts weren’t enough. They never were. Not when she was used to waking up with his arm slung around her waist, his nose buried in the crook of her neck, mumbling half-asleep “five more minutes” when she tried to move. Not when she was used to the way he pulled her into his chest after a long day, pressing absentminded kisses to her temple as they talked about anything and everything.

His arms didn’t loosen—not yet—but when he finally set her down, his hands stayed on her waist, thumbs rubbing slow, familiar circles over her hips. His blue eyes, soft and unwavering, searched hers like he was memorizing every little detail of her face. “I missed you.”

The words were simple, yet they hit—because he said them so easily, without hesitation, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Y/N’s heart clenched. Reaching up, she brushed his hair from his forehead, fingers lingering. “I missed you too.”

But apparently, words weren’t enough.

The next thing she knew, his lips were on hers—slow, lingering, the kind of kiss that made everything else fade away. It was the kind of kiss that said I love you, even though neither of them had spoken the words yet.

Heat curled in her chest, and she leaned in, her fingers tangling in the soft waves at the nape of his neck—

Madison grinned. “We feel like we already know you with the way Drew talks about you.”

Y/N raised an eyebrow, tilting her head toward Drew. “Oh, yeah?”

Drew rolled his eyes. “They’re exaggerating.”

“We’re not,” JD interjected. “You talk about her like you’re a lovesick teenage boy.”

Drew groaned. “I hate all of you.”

Drew shrugged. “You never asked.”

Btw what I meant by the was meant to represent the wider fandom and how it was received. Not that I don't call him Rudy, I definitely do. Not maliciously and not nearly in the same way that you might commonly think of as deadnaming but I do. Kinda why I refrain from calling him Robot because it doesn't feel representative of his personality as a whole so much as it does the image he was projecting at the time.

So little of an offense that I kind of liked that he took Rex's name. The timing was not good but in my eyes it informs more about his character and just implies a lot about how he felt about Rex. (Puts my hand lovingly on my wall of red string.) A far cry from the line in the sand- the line in the sand is imaginary at this point, imagined by me in another universe where I am normal.
