Just wanted to ask before I doodle it myself.

rusty lake: paradise spoilers
wait so since it’s implied that nicholas is the eldest eilander son (ie firstborn) because the whole eilander family is living together on the island and gerard is his only known (and younger) brother iirc, doesn’t that mean that he’s the one who should be burned instead of jakob?? like ?? shut tf up about healing the island via filicide and sacrifice yourself bitch ???

i actually fucking love Rusty Lake Paradise, like everything eventually makes so much sense and connects with each other and all the metaphors and stuff
tws for character death and religion(?) and spoilers for Rusty Lake: Paradise, Cube Escape: Samasara Room, and Rusty Lake: Roots below read more
if i need to tag anything else just let me know
like how people continue their behaviour even after they’re given a second chance
and how Jakob helps his family despite the fact that they tried to sacrifice him a few years ago, and they ended sacrificing him to the lake for immortality anyways
and just the whole concept of an island who messed up really badly was striken with the 10 plagues. i just love religious themes in general though so that might just be me
it’s quite obvious through out the game that no one except for Elizabeth actually learns from their mistakes, gerard continuing to eat despite the fact that he literally died and came back to life after eating diseased meat, Nicholas who continued to search for immortality after his wife died and the lake cursed him for it, and David who became a fly creature after being a cocky bitch, and continued to be a cocky bitch. even Jakob, who doesn’t learn from his previous mistake and falls right into the trap his family set to kill him
the fact that the island is name “Paradise” obviously shows that it may have been paradise before when Caroline was still around, but now that she’s dead makes the name a paradox, since 10 plagues can’t possibly be paradise
how the lake is sentient and essentially is a god, requiring memories to sustain itself and feeding on people, turning them into corrupted souls and making them immortal, but likely in constant pain.
how some people were lucky enough to get the formula and achieve immortality, like the Eilander family, but others like William Vanderboom were trapped as a corrupted soul (before he got Rose to resurrect him)
down to the fact that the last name Eilander literally means “Islander” in dutch and they live on an island
i love the funny little horror puzzle game so much

Hey, I guess people DO want me to explain Rusty Lake Lore :D
Okay-okay, so,
Chapter 0 out of ???
I prefer to put all Rusty Lake games and storybits into 4 parts:
1) Eilander arc (RL Paradise, RL Hotel)
2) Vanderboom arc (Samsara, RL Roots, The Past Within)
3) the Dead Woman and the Detective arc (cube escape Collection, cube escape Paradox, Underground Blossom)
4) Best Kept Memory arc (the White Room, ARG)
Take a notice, that one arc can and DOES overlay with others.
Also, NOTHING HERE IS SET IN STONE.
New RL games keep telling details from different arcs, altering and giving them a new meaning. They never come out in chronological order.
I am not an expert in RL, also English is not my first language, so please tell me if I've made a mistake.
WARNING: I will heavily spoiler each and every game (+ARG, a movie and trailers). Please play/watch at least some of them before reading this.

I was just going to reply to @sunshine-herricane under the original post, but I figured why not make a longer infodump. So, mind your spoilers and get ready to click a read more link, because it's time to enjoy my personal
Harvey lore rant
Harvey is one of the first two characters to be introduced to us in Cube Escape: Seasons along with Laura. It is known to us that he's a relevant character because otherwise Rusty Lake wouldn't bother to make Cube Escape: Harvey's Box, in which you play as him; plus, if he wasn't relevant you wouldn't need him alive to complete Seasons.
The thing is, I think it's easy to forget about him, or brush him off as a secondary character, since we only see him as a sort of "sidekick". Apart from Harvey's Box, he just makes minor appearances and gets nearly killed by Laura on various occasions (Think of the scene in Cube Escape: The Mill in which Laura, as a corrupted soul, almost chokes him to death).
Things change with Rusty Lake Hotel, where, if you manage to give Owl the Rusty Lake Cigars, it's revealed you're playing as Harvey. This is huge, because at this point you find out that Harvey isn't just a pet, but a character that can be compared to Mr Owl or Mr Crow, which up to this point are the people playing puppeteer with the other characters of the plot.
This is why it's logical to imagine that Harvey's role, in this situation, is to act as a butler for Mr Owl, and one can easily assume that it was Owl's idea to kill the hotel guests. In other words, Owl is the boss, and Harvey is just following orders, whether he likes killing those animal-people or not.
Before getting to Paradise, I think it's important to make a quick stop through Cube Escape: Birthday, in which we see him with his humanoid form for the first time:
Tumblr media
And we also get to see an interesting piece of lore about the corrupted souls of the hotel guests breaking free from their containers and attacking both Harvey and Mr Owl. This way we learn that Harvey is also a shapeshifter, and contrary to Owl or Crow, who have a human and a hybrid form, Harvey seems to be naturally a bird that somehow achieved this (I'm assuming) "enlightened" state of half bird, half human.
This is important information because it indicates that Harvey is likely immortal. This is in line with Rusty Lake Roots: judging from that level in the Emma storyline, Harvey is around the lake in 1891, and is also around Laura's death (1971 according to Cube Escape: Case 23). Now, I know nothing about parrots, but 80+ years is a pretty long life for a parrot that seems suspiciously to never age.
One could argue that this could be just a similar parrot or whatever, but we also know that Hotel takes place in 1893, and Harvey is definitely in that game at least.
Now we get to the infamous Paradise Easter Egg: it's fairly missable, but you can find Harvey sitting on the window sill during the third plague
Tumblr media
This happens in 1796. And being Paradise Mr Owl's origin story, well, this is clearly evidence that Harvey has been around longer than him. This is a theory of mine- but he probably was Caroline's pet, or the one that sparked her research around the lake and immortality.
Point is, this is a huge turn on the Harvey-Owl dynamic: where at first Harvey seemed to be a servant, now he feels a lot more like an equal. At this point of the story I thought that Harvey could've been the one to suggest to Owl to take revenge on his family/hotel guests, and Owl could've been the one saying "let's go for murder".
Except that underground blossom came out.
I won't share screenshots of it because it's another stance of the Rusty Lake franchise being weird about nipples, plus I don't want to spoil much of that game, but to cut it short: toward the last few stations, Harvey decides to torture a pickpocketer for stealing Rose's timepiece.
This is another strong statement about Harvey's personality, since it's clear that he really had no problem killing the various people during Hotel. This puts a bunch of things into perspective, because I mean, c'mon, he deliberately hurts unaware bystanders who just steal shit and aren't really involved (so far) in the plot. One could've said that the Hotel guests "deserved" it (since it's clear they aren't really pleasant or good people either, even before Paradise came out), or again, Harvey was just doing what he's told. But this one scene screams "Harvey is a sadistic bitch" and at this point I'm not even mad about it.
Now the only thing left to find out is when he actually gains his human form- but by the looks of it, the clues are pointing towards him being the oldest immortal bird-person in the lore, and probably the one who knows the real secret to reach ascension and enlightenment.

the eiLander family
I could clearly feel myself trembling when I saw this painting, and my father was sitting in a chair waiting for me to pour him some water to quench his thirst.
My feelings about this family were too mixed, but I was ready to accept my fate from the moment I decided to return.
Next to the family photo was a half-length photo of my mother. The photo shows my mother so beautiful and so vivid.
I dared not look any further and averted my eyes as my father once again begged me to find him some water.
"Yes, Dad." I heard myself reply, "I'll be back soon with something to quench my thirst."
Too calm, but just what I wanted.
Fifteen years, that happy family photo was fifteen years ago, and my father must still remember what happened fifteen years ago.
My return also set the clocks that had stood still all those years ago running again, the meteors of fate returned to their rightful course and descended on this place, Paradise Island, as they had done in their original course.
I fetched the kettle from the cupboard and pumped a jug of blood at the pump - the arrival of the blood plague had turned the water of the lake to blood and I resisted my desire to drink it, it was too evil to drink blood.
Not wanting my father to die from the ridiculous drinking of blood to quench his thirst, I poured a jug for the goat, and after witnessing no ill reaction from the goat, I repunched another jug and carried the jug full of red, fresh blood to my father.
Under my angry and frightened eyes, my father drank the cup of blood, and watching it disappear into his mouth made me feel a little uncomfortable, as if the man sitting in the chair in front of me was not my father, but a monster, a monster who hurt and ate people and taught them not to die.
"Ever since your mother died, Rusty Lake has been gripped by pain. She has prayed hoping you would return. So help us, son."
False everything.
The falsity of it all.
A feeling of powerlessness ate away at me and I just answered him with that haggard look, "Yes, Dad."
Since I was a child, my father had told me with that false look that sacrifice was my destiny, that sacrifice was great. The whole island was shrouded in sacrifice, and it was my mother who saved me, and now I am here for her, too
Anger was of no avail, and exhaustion soon overshadowed it, and I was once again the haggard eldest son, haunted by the sorrow of my mother's passing.

Some Eilander siblings headcanons I’ve been sitting on
It’s been a while since I’ve played Paradise but with the release of Paradox and a certain cameo, I’ve been thinking... how do you think the Eilander siblings took things before/after Jakob left/came back?
Under cut because it’s looong
I’d like to imagine that Elizabeth kind of knew what was going on before she was told. Between her and David, she always seemed more perceptive of things, and helped Jakob out the most during the Plagues. So before the fated day, she’d try to spend as much time with him as she could.
Then Caroline suddenly sacrificed herself for Jakob, and with her mother’s death, Liz was the only one left to really take care of David, and vice versa when David grew up. I really don’t believe Nicholas would make a good dad, and seeing how Mrs. Pigeon behaved, I don’t think Margaret was a good caretaker either. And because Jakob left when David was so young, his memories of Jakob were hazy. He would ask Liz about him and their mother all the time and Liz would answer them as best she can. And when Liz gets depressed at all that happened, David would do his best to cheer her up. They would sometimes want to write to him, but they had no idea where he was. I have a headcanon that there’s a bundle of letters that they never sent, or sent and then got bounced back.
Jakob’s return and the three sibling’s reunion were jarring for all of them, to be honest. The conflicting feeling of simultaneously thinking “this has to be my brother” and “is this really my brother?”. David’s antics were just as shocking and weird to Jakob as they were to the player, and I’d like to think that in between plagues, they had a moment to get together and catch up. Jakob asked about their mother and they told him what he already knew - that she sacrificed herself. They never talked the upcoming sacrificial ceremony, not only because Jakob probably isn’t supposed to know in the beginning, but also they don’t like to think about it, and even if they did, it’s not as if they would put an end to it. It’s Jakob’s Fate.
Jakob’s final “sacrifice” ritual was really hard on both David and Liz, but Liz took it the hardest. It’s my headcanon that at the hotel, she committed suicide out of guilt once she realized what was going on.
Speaking of which, hmm... Maybe the best order that you kill the guests in the hotel has something to do with Mr. Owl’s resentment for them? Makes sense that he would want Nicholas dead first, while Liz and Gerald, the latter of whom did absolutely nothing and basically just minded his business most of the time, would be among the last.

Sanders Sides as Rusty Lake Hotel
The holy trinity (SPOILERS FOR THE RUSTY LAKE GAMES)
Roots
Paradise
I played hotel yesterday so here we are, part 3
Roman: Ms Pheasant (Ms Pheasant’s entire level is a photo shoot, c’mon)
Logan: Mr Owl (He was Jakob in my one for Paradise so it adds up)
Patton: Mrs Pigeon (Think of the baby bird in her level and tell me you’re not getting unsympathetic patton vibes)
Janus: Mr Deer
Remus: Mr Boar (Pretty self explanatory. Play his level and you’ll see what I mean.)
Virgil: The bat-cat elevator attendant (Virgil is definitely a bat-cat.)
C! Thomas: Mr Rabbit (A magician who later shoots down a 9-year-old’s birthday party with an AK-47? Sure)
Orange: Mr Crow

I just recently started following you but what is Rusty Lake?
A point and click horror-themed, cartoon art style escape room/puzzle game. The storyline in each game is told out of order, and you have to piece it together. There’s little to no dialogue but the concepts and story is intriguing from what you get out of it (emotions are mostly implied. The most emotion you get out of Dale is in the tie-in short film Cube Escape Paradox and brief moments of voice acting). It’s still ongoing and the games are either free or 2 dollars.
If you want to start though, I recommend downloading the games on mobile. Play Rusty Lake Hotel, then the Cube Escape Collection (9 short games in one app that explain the story out of order), Rusty Lake Roots, Rusty Lake Paradise, Cube Escape: Paradox, Samsara Room, then The White Door.
You sometimes play as Dale Vandermeer, a homicide detective, solving the murder of Laura Vanderboom. The other characters you play as are spoilers, so I won’t say them.
Of course if you don’t want to play, you can watch John Wolfe play it on youtube, but it’s an escape room/puzzle game so it’s more fun if you do it yourself. Also, it’s one of those games that I think is ok not to rush while playing, but you can find guides easily if you ever get stuck. There’s also achievements if you’re a completionist.
Oh! Also look out for Easter Eggs and Secrets!

(rl: paradise spoilers) okay like screw nicholas (ofc) but that aside, didn't caroline know that jakob would be sacrificed going into it? was offering to switch places with him sort of a last-ditch effort to save his life bc she'd grown attached to him? or was she unaware until her husband sprung that on her right before the ceremony?
