You know what I wanna see in Volume 10? Robyn acting as Ruby’s mentor.

Robyn is a community organizer, she’s a leader who fought an impossible fight — just, you know, against major systemic issues like poverty and classism instead of an immortal Grimm Queen.

But Robyn never did it alone, because she fought for Mantle while remaining part of its community. Moreover, even if she was the leader, we see that the Happy Huntresses clearly weigh in a lot for decisions that happen during downtime — they function fine as a unit without Robyn in Volume 8 when they’re doing damage control and rescue around Mantle.

To be clear, I’m not saying Robyn is better than Ruby or anything. Just that she’s older, and therefore has more experience running a team and balancing being a reliable leader with her own needs.

Plus, in contrast to Mr. Secrets Ozpin, Robyn has always been very open, honest and sincere about her feelings. (I mean, her semblance says a lot on that front.)

Just…I think Robyn would be a good balancing force and role model for Ruby, as the latter figures out how to be a leader and still look after her own needs.

A facet of the whole "Ironwood was ruined" mentality comes from how villains having moments of rage and petuence aren't exactly... en vogue these days.

I'm probably one of the rare breeds of people who enjoyed Disney's Wish. It shouldn't have been its 100th anniversary film and the director shouldn't been allowed to cook like its Pixar buuuuuuut I nowhere near think that the outrage on YouTube alone is warranted. "Mid" isn't the insult they think it is and its box office status means diddly in the age of streaming.

But that aside, the villain, King Magnifico, was a point of contention because of how he was an out and out Disney villain rather than him being a third act twist villain. Me? I loved him and Chris Pine's acting for him, especially in how he actually seemed to mirror Walt Disney in various respects.

One point I dislike is how he was ruined when he dabbled in dark magic and became more deranged. That is, he hardly holds up to older Disney villains that did get angry but also had control. Except that in seeing him as a Disney CEO analogue, I found that he was on point with how his type of evil was banal and trying to enforce a system that'd never challenge him or his way of running things.

Looping back to Ironwood, it feels like many disliked his breakdown in Volume 7's finale and especially his deterioating mentality in Volume 8 because on top of going full mask off, he got so emotional and, well, bratty over not getting his way.

Except he was like this in Volume 2 with how he took the initiative in ways that felt like he didn't like not getting his way. His army coming to Vale in a time of peace? Encouraging Ruby in trying to get Cinder despite her not being liscensed? Penny being unknown to Ozpin?

They just don't like it when a manly man acts all emotional "like a woman would." God, that made me sick just putting in airquotes.

OH ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE BLUSH SCENE??!!!

I actually think this a pretty underrated moment, for all us rg shippers were excited by it as you know, a cute moment of ruby showing concern of oscar, the shoulder touch and the following cute blush as a reminder that yes, oscar indeed still has a big ole crush on ruby.

BUT I think what doesn't get talked about enough is the exchange they have just before, or the reason why ruby is comforting oscar and the affect this small moment has on him for the rest of the volume:

Oscar: I was stupid to think the general would listen. Every choice I’ve made was the wrong one, and now…

Ruby: We all did what we thought was best. I’m just glad you’re alright.

Like. Let's just step back a bit. Oscar when we see him first in V8, looks pretty depressed. The aftermath of what happened with Ironwood making him feel like his choices are all wrong and don't make any difference, choosing to trust in people and believing in humanity blew up quite literally in his face, and that he as his own person cannot make a difference, the return of Oz making him feel like he's lost the chance to be his own person at all. What he says to Ruby tells us he's doubting himself pretty hard.

...But this is also the volume where Oscar's conviction and agency shine brighter than before and he does make a difference, as his own person. Even after being kidnapped and tortured his resolve is unshaken, and he still chooses to have faith in humanity, even those who are with Salem, when he has no reason too, and that choice pays off. Trusting in Hazel and Ozpin leads to their escape, and that trust being reciprocated gives Oscar the chance to decimate Salem and her surrounding grimm, saving his friends and buying literally everyone in Atlas/Mantle time from her relentless attacks. Trusting in Emerald also gives them the upper hand in their plan to trick and ambush Ironwood too. Like Oscar accomplishes a lot in this volume by being confident and resolute in his own beliefs and choices, despite the multiple beatings he takes.

So what on earth inspired such unshakeable confidence in Oscar when we see he's full of so much doubt and regret at the beginning of this volume?

It's Ruby. It's this moment right here.

Oscar is doubting himself and his choices, and says "every choice I've made has been the wrong one", dangerously skewing close to Ozpin's own previous mindset and the slippery slope of becoming paralysed with guilt and indecision, and he's reassured by Ruby that they all did what they thought was best, by extent that his choices matter simply in trying, and his actions after that throughout the volume and especially in the Whalem, him remaining resolute and confident in continuing to try to do what he believes is best, which is putting his trust in people, in their shared humanity, despite doubting himself before proves how much Ruby still continues to inspire him to keep moving forward.

nuts n dolts in itself is just. so romantic to me. like i get when people say they see it platonic but everything every aspect of their relationship is so romantic and full of love and adoration and the want to protect the other. the tragedy of the situation. the way that ruby completely and utterly broke down when the fake penny talked to ruby. the way penny sacrificed herself for the ‘greater good’, the way ruby collapses at the fact of this. ohh the romeo and juliet of it all.
