Sigh...they're writing Plotdale for me again.

So I went back and watched all of the surrounding Aaron scenes from yesterday with Mack and Vic and then watched today's stuff.

I really quite like seeing Aaron have friends for the sake of this plot. So like...that's a positive. I've always thought Danny and Lawerence worked well together and had good friend chemistry. If they could actually stick with the friendship outside of plot specific needs, that would still be really good for both of their characters long term.

Because Mack teasing him about the whole John thing is exactly what the Ben nonsense needed back in 2020/2021. I mean it would not have saved that utterly abysmal attempt at a story but it would have made it slightly more palatable.

And I do like seeing Aaron and Vic having scenes together again.

I also very much liked seeing the garage be a functional set again. I feel like maybe it has been more lately from what I've seen in the spoilers but for so long it really wasn't and so that was also nice.

As for John...I mean...I do feel like he was sort of okay when interacting with everyone else. But he and Aaron just have no chemistry. And I don't really understand what they're trying to do with them. Like I guess...it's supposed to be an enemies to lovers thing maybe??? But there really was just zero reason for him to drive off with Aaron's keys and wallet yesterday. So their hostility towards each other over it just feels empty now.

I mean..what even was that whole little punch/shove thing they had at the end? And I feel like they had them linger close to each other in a threatening manner like it was supposed to be turning them on in the same way the Robron wall slam worked but like...it did not. It was not the same at all. It was just dumb.

And John just feels like another one of those characters that's got a tragic backstory that will come out in one, two months time and be a big deal for two episodes and then somehow that will solve all his problems and then he and Aaron will just magically get together after that and he'll move into the village and none of it will feel earned in any way. That's just the vibe I get. Probably because that's the only kind of story they tell these days and they're all bad.

Because right now he's just unnecessarily hostile to everyone but they can't have him open up and say why yet cause we have to wait for some kind of stupid pointless reveal.

Sigh.

The only time I felt anything in terms of romantic tension was when Aaron learned John was Robert's half brother and she mentioned that Aaron used to be married to Robert. I swear any time Danny gets to be Aaron talking about or thinking about Robert, all of a sudden his acting performance improves. Ryan doesn't even have to be there to elevate his performance. Actually, Danny probably doesn't even have to act. He's probably just like "Wow man I miss Ryan too".

So...yeah...love Aaron having friends. Love seeing the garage be functional. Aaron has way more chemistry with Mack than he does with John, even if it is more friend chemistry than romantic.

Day two...not much improvement on John/Aaron scenes together.

Oh also...just the fact that it took that many coincidences and contrivances to even get Vic to that funeral and place her in John's path...like dear god. Why is this their only way to tell a story???

One thing I find fun with these BLs is that when they put two actors together repeatedly as lovers in different roles, it can still yield different results. That's not necessarily true for Hollywood. You put Hanks/Ryan, Spencer/Tracy, or Gere/Roberts together, and you pretty much know what kind of dynamic you get. Even if the couples have different names and circumstances, they still feel more or less the same.

But PhuTian aren't JimWen. AlanGaipa aren't AkkAye. TanBun definitely aren't KornKnock. And even though I haven't seen MSP, I don't have to recognize the scene to know when a gifset is HeartLiming or TinnGun. The characters are different enough that the entire romantic vibe changes.

Why do I get the feeling it's going to come out that Robert and John are both aware of each other? Like really AWARE. John mentioned he's heard of Robert before, but what if John is on Robert's radar too? What if they met in those years before he returned to Emmerdale and met Aaron?

John's giving serious hitman/conman vibes lol, so maybe he's one of the dodgy connections Robert had, who he'd call to do all his dirty work.

Robert himself told Aaron he's done things — things he's not even told Aaron about, so what if there is some connection between all that sketchy shit and John?

Who knows if Emmerdale writers would even think of something like that, but it could get interesting...

I don't really understand the point of autographs, but it's a low effort way for actors (especially smaller ones) to make money

Won Nana Visitor and Garrett Wang signed photos

Got a special signing with the Rat Pack cause they held the cosplay contest at the same time as the signatures, so I missed every one of the ones that came with my pass. Dr. Trek made it happen for me though, and he was super cool

Casey Biggs and Jeffrey Combs made it happen, wish I'd gotten them at the normal time. Sort of caught them all on the side of the stage

Vaughn Armstrong was very, very sweet, especially considering I didn't have a photo for him to sign

Max Grodénchik took about 10 minutes to sign, meticulously picking out the right location on the picture, right pen, and right color. He wished me luck "much profit," saying it didn't have to be money. Abundance in life. When he was done, talked to him a little bit about the Rat Pack show (and the special Strike version) since he wrote most of the songs

Ethan Phillips recommended some books to me (though I can't for the life of me remember them, I cry), and he was overall very nice

Jeri Ryan was completely swamped but I told her voyager was my absolute favorite and she acknowledged my Janeway cosplay and asked how to say my name. She even laughed at my little name joke

Robert Picardo made minimal conversation, and he picked up and started reading his book to make me go away (it was like 2 minutes max, he had no line, and it was quiet in there. Same vibe both times I've talked to him)

Brent Spiner and I talked about his book for at least 5 minutes, even with his unending line

Michelle Hurd was again very lovely, and I was asking her about the SAG strike

Doctor Who Tierlist (as requested by @transgenderdoctorwhomst)

Curtis has been bugging me about my placement of Eleven for weeks so here is something objectively worse: a ranking of Doctors, companions, Torchwood crew, and Jackie.

(Don't take this too seriously. I like most of these guys a lot.)

Explanations under the cut for length

Rankings are a mix between "how well do I think they're written" and "how much do I like them" based on vibes and whims, and are not consistent in how much each matters.

Rose: Placing her on the chart would throw all of the other letter rankings off. She gets her own tier.

S (Eight, Nine, Amy): Top crowd who I think about too much without prompting.

Nine is my favourite New Who Doctor, first Doctor, ninerosejack, etc. Grumpy as hell with love in his heart. Also his season is my favourite season vibe-wise.

Eight is extremely bully-able, like a sopping wet cat, while also having some screwed up aspects to him. Vampire Science is great if you want to watch him have a toxic mind-melding relationship with a vampire, and I can't put him any lower after that.

A+ (Spy, Simm, Ianto): Could fight anyone in S for a spot, but I'm unwilling to crowd a rank that thoroughly.

If I was ranking the Master as a whole and the Doctor as a whole, the Master would win, but I'm not.

Ianto is here instead of S rank because I don't think he's quite well written enough to go there. I do, however, like him immensely.

A (Jack, TARDIS): Not fighting for S rank, but still very good.

The TARDIS isn't around enough for me to put her higher than this, but she's a lovely eldritch creature.

I like Jack more than Ten.

A- (Ten, Owen, Gwen): Not quite A material, but I'm still abnormal about them.

I like Ten less than Jack.

Owen has massive amount of character development in his series and is definitely the most interesting character in Torchwood.

Gwen is kind of a bitch, and I mean that in the most affectionate way possible. She is snarky and terrible and refuses to accept anything not going her way. Good for her.

Owen and Gwen could probably sit up in A with Jack, but I won't leave Ten alone like that.

B+ (River Song): I don't know enough about her to put her in the A's, but she has potential. Made me cry once.

B (Donna, Rory, Toshiko): Fun characters doing their own thing but I'm not feral over them.

Donna was probably the best choice for a Ten companion. She's neat. 👍

Rory was a plastic soldier for 2000 years. Depending on how they handle that later he could go up in the rankings or stay at B forever.

Toshiko should have had episodes about her job. She's the resident tech specialist. Why was every Toshiko-centred episode about her love life.

C+ (Eleven, Thirteen, Jackie): Cool in theory, okay in practice (+Jackie).

Technically I talk about and draw Eleven more than anyone in B or B+, but I'm the one in charge of the list, and I thought Rory (rank B)'s plastic soldier bit was more interesting than anything Eleven did in s5. Like I said: cool in theory, okay in practice.

C (Roberts!Master, Mickey Smith, Adam Mitchell): Did their jobs perfectly acceptably. No strong feelings in any direction.

C- (Yaz): I hear she gets better.

D (Graham, Ryan): I was incapable of getting emotionally attached to any of Thirteen's companions which was disappointing. Hoping they get better in the later seasons and at least bump up to C, but I'm not holding my breath.

Complicated: Characters I can't reasonably drop into any of the rankings.

Martha was not treated well by the narrative, and I didn't enjoy a lot of her episodes in s3. BUT when she IS treated well she's great. If you're a Martha liker, watch Torchwood. She gets to actually be a doctor.

Tentoo is interesting in theory/interesting in what could be done with him, but they don't actually try to do anything with him. I also have personal distaste for the end of Journey's End, but that's not the character's fault.

Haven't met them yet: I haven't met them yet. I hear good things about... pretty much all of them though. I expect to have Twelve and Clara pretty far up the list. The others I don't hear enough about to know yet.

The Beauty of Barbenheimer

A combination of the COVID-19 pandemic and a surge in streaming platform content has made life very difficult for cinemas in recent times. Why venture out, find a parking spot, queue for snacks and sit with strangers in the dark when you can watch whatever you like from the comfort of home, right?

But convenience can come at a cost. Our at-home screens and digital devices have been dominated by superheroes, seasons and remakes of late, and fatigue is starting to set in. Franchises have ballooned so much that even die-hard fans are finding it hard to keep engaged, let alone keep up. This bombardment of unimaginative content has left many lovers of cinema bored.

Enter the Barbenheimer phenomenon.

Dubbed Barbenheimer due to the dual release date (July 20th here in Australia) of Warner Bros. and Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ and Universal Pictures and Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, these films have been smashing it at the box office, persuading people to return to their local cinemas in droves.

Sure, a saturation of ads, interviews, trailers and exclusive clips have had something to do with their success so far, but it’s mostly been fuelled by a desire for fresh stories and a contagious case of FOMO.

The notion that both movies are best experienced in the cinema surfaced organically with the hype, and a healthy dose of cross-promotion from the creatives of both sides has been yet another driver for record ticket sales.

Nolan is known for his large-scale epics of practical effects, big sights and even bigger sounds, so it was only natural that ‘Oppenheimer’ was going to be promoted as a must-see on the big screen.

Veteran Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy (who plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father of the atomic bomb”) is mesmerising is his first, proper leading role in Hollywood, and is backed by an all-star ensemble cast that includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett and Kenneth Branagh. And Ludwig Goransaon’s suspenseful score acts like a character of its own.

Although most of us knew a bit about The Manhattan Project, the Trinity test and the subsequent (and horrific) bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, very few of us knew about the man behind the story.

‘Oppenheimer’ is an explosive, 3-hour look at his early life, his work and relationships, his obsession with quantum physics and his eventual role as the face of the Atomic Age. It’s about the biggest, global gamble to date (the bomb was either going to exacerbate all wars, end all wars or end the world), and it plays out in typical Nolan fashion with staggering IMAX camera visuals, going from the dusty desert vistas of Los Alamos, to the black and white colour gradings of claustrophobic courtrooms.

Gerwig on the other hand, is best known for acting in mumblecore movies and directing arthouse style, female-led films like ‘Little Women’ and ‘Lady Bird’.

‘Barbie’ is her first turn at a blockbuster, with an ensemble cast that is yes, mostly women, but has some stellar supporting male actors in the mix. With a picture-perfect Margot Robbie at the helm, ‘Barbie’ follows the titular Mattel doll’s journey from Barbieland into the real world, where she is confronted with an existence that is wildly different to her own.

Hilarity (and some heartfelt moments) ensue, with Ryan Gosling stealing every scene he’s in as her peroxide blonde, lovesick sidekick Ken, plus some fun supporting performances from the likes of America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

Gerwig’s plastic fantastic, feminist world gives off serious summer vacay vibes, all technicolor blue skies, hot pink dreamhouses, glittery dancefloors and sunny beaches - with a super catchy soundtrack to boot!

With one movie about a bomb and the other about a bombshell, on the surface, it looked like they were going to appeal to two very different types of moviegoers. But we couldn’t have been more wrong, and hallelujah for that!

People have turned Barbenheimer into an event, getting big groups together, dressing up and booking back-to-back screenings. There’s even merch and memes, but more importantly, there’s hope. Hope that Hollywood still has more to offer than CGI, stunts and sequels.

In their first three days in the theatre, Barbenheimer generated a whopping $244.5 million dollars combined. If that’s not the definition of going off with a bang, I don’t know what is…
