The Owl House Season 1 Episode 15: Understanding Willow

So I see this storyboard panel going about a lot lately as supposed proof Marco Diaz was meant to be trans. Which look, yes, this was the official storyboard panel but it is from the Season 4 episode of SVTFOE entitled “Ransomgram”. The crew of SVTFOE addressed the trans Marco theory at a CalArts panel during Season 3 where they expressed that;

1. Marco was intended to be a cis male character with feminine interests.

2. They were happy trans people could see themselves in Marco.

3. They would try not to disprove the theory.

The chances are, at most this storyboard panel was the crew just throwing the trans Marco side of the fandom a little bit of evidence for their theory but given what we know, it remains doubtful the plan was to make it canon. This particular episode was directed by Sabrina Cotugno who is trans masc themself (although they came out after the show) and would on occasion interact with the trans Marco tag on Tumblr.

Something I’m not sure of, is whether this colouring was intended for the final episode. It definitely didn’t make the final cut and I have asked Sabrina about this but haven’t received a response. I am remembering something about Sabrina though.

So back during Gravity Falls, there was an episode that featured Cupid which Sabrina Cotugno was a storyboard artist on. The pendant for the necklace, which Sabrina drew was the trans symbol. Disney changed this so it was an overlapping male and female symbol.

The above panel would serve as a pretty glaring confirmation of Marco being trans, especially with the already existent theory. While trans Marco wasn’t intended to be canon, I think it is pretty safe to assume that Disney may have censored the above storyboard based on past behaviour and what this colour choice would insinuate.

Can we just talk about how SAD the tgs version of Hyde is?

It’s always so interesting to look at how he’s explained in the different versions. Like some have the whole “DID” thing, others are just Jekyll with no filter. The way I understood it from one of the earlier chapters in the comic was that Jekyll and Hyde are totally separate identities. They have the same body but are still different people. BUT Hyde still has all the memories pre-split. He REMEMBERS being Jekyll, making the potion, living through life. Most of the time he refers to Jekyll by name but he only talks in first person when talking about “pre-split Henry.” So this man lived his whole life being the good doctor, drank some bad water then WOKE UP AS HYDE, decided he doesn’t care anymore and stared going around by a whole new name. Like??? It’s like if you took to parallel universe Jekylls and just jammed them together. He’s only been Hyde for 2 years. So nothing will convince me that if someone yells “Jekyll!” around him he won’t still spin around and be like “WHOT?!”

So as some of you will know, I pay attention to a handful of present and former Disney TVA storyboard artists, directors and/or creators. One of these is Sabrina Cotugno ( @arythusa ), who honestly I am still awaiting the day I get to watch a show where they are credited as the creator, as whatever they come out with I’m sure will be amazing.

In the meantime though, it has just been announced that their webcomic series, The Glass Scientist is going to be published as a graphic novel by Penguin Teen as part of a 3 part book deal. The first of which is scheduled to be released in Fall 2023.

Seems like some pretty damn awesome news and I know I will definitely be getting a copy when it comes out.
