Today, I was decluttering and found a jewelry box from my childhood. Amongst some burgeoning attempts at beaded jewelry, I found these: a charm from a Hollie Hobby bracelet, my pin for the National Jr. Honor Society, and the candle stick from my favorite board game, Clue. Go figure on that last one: I’m a Scorpio and love a good mystery. 😂 They feel like sacred objects, so I put them on my alter. "And I Bled as She Lay Dying" is a #sculpture Memento Mori of the passing of my mother. We sat next to her ICU bed for a couple of weeks as she lay unconscious. We waited for news from the neurologist on whether or not she had brain activity. I came home for two days to have double knee surgery and then returned to her side, eventually having to sign paperwork to remove life support and let her go. The base of this piece is made from the gauze secured to my surgical wounds as I watched her. The center is a nipple-less breast, representing the loss of my original nurturing source, maggots symbolize death and the return to dust. “Guidelines for the Treatment of Sacred Objects” by Heid Erdrich made me realize that I am inherently inclined to question the purpose of anything “strange” I am told when it comes to sacred objects. My lack of knowledge on any religion or culture is a severe disadvantage as I do not understand the context in which the objects reside. Mano Figas, or fig hang, is an ancient protective symbol against the evil eye. The gesture originally referred to the harmony of a sexual unity, and thus female fertility, but as a protective garment it can permeate any fixed meaning and exist as a #sacredobject.
