The White Label Auction in Aid of The BRIT Trust – the world’s only known auction of “white label” test pressings – takes place next week on Tuesday, 6th June 2023. This year it will have more than 200 lots of highly collectible ‘white-label’ test pressings – the most offered in the four editions of the auction to date since it began in 2019.

The online/on-site auction is once again being hosted by music memorabilia and vinyl records specialists Omega Auctions from their Newton-Le-Willows (Greater Manchester) base. The full catalogue can be accessed here.

Fans and collectors can bid from a huge selection of white label test pressings that rarely come to market, with some even signed by the artists such as The Cure, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, New Order, and Wilko Johnson.

The UK’s record labels led by Universal Music UK, who founded the event with the BPI, along with BMG, Domino Recordings, Cherry Red, Sony Music Entertainment UK, Warner Records and others, each year join forces to curate a broad selection of white label auction lots to raise funds for the vital work of music industry charity The BRIT Trust – which promotes education and wellbeing through music and the creative arts to support causes that include the BRIT School and Nordoff and Robbins.

In January the BPI reported that vinyl albums had recorded a 15th year of consecutive growth in the UK, with over 5.5m LPs purchased in 2022. This rising demand for vinyl has in turn resulted in a growing archive of white label test pressings – so called because there is no sleeve artwork at this early stage – which record labels produce ahead of the full release of an album to ensure its audio quality. With only a handful produced, these first-off-the-press copies are snapped up by collectors on the rare occasions they become available, as evidenced by the huge interest in the three White Labels Auctions to date, which between them have raised around £100,000.

I’m rereading Wuthering Heights and am trying to watch all the adaptations. My favourites so far are the 2009 miniseries, the 1978 miniseries and the 1970 movie with Timothy Dalton (I never really liked the one with Ralph Fiennes)! Sam Smith begeistert bei den ausverkauften Jazzopen Stuttgart

Mit Sam Smith konnten die Jazzopen Stuttgart in diesem Jahr einen weiteren Weltstar in die Landeshauptstadt Baden-Württemberg holen. Am Freitagabend spielte die non-binäre britische Person ein Konzert auf dem Stuttgarter Schlossplatz. Ausverkauftes Haus bei strahlendem Sonnenschein - besser kann man kaum ins Wochenende starten. Der Stuttgarter Schlossplatz war bereits zu Beginn der ersten Band gefühlt noch nie so voll wie an diesem Freitag. Kein Wunder, immerhin wurden alle 7.200 Karten verkauft. Den Anfang machte um 19:30 Uhr die ebenfalls aus London stammende Sängerin Konyikeh, welche nur von ihrem Gitarrist begleitet auf der Bühne vor einem großen schwarzen Vorhang stand.

KONYIKEH © About Musïc | Stephanie Bauer Ihre beruhigende und dennoch kraftvolle Stimme suchte sich ihren Weg über den Schlossplatz und stimmte die Stuttgarter, die immer wieder Applaus spendeten, auf den Freitagabend ein. Das Set der Anfang 20 Jährigen bestand aus ihren ersten Singles sowie aus unreleasten Songs. Natürlich durfte ihre zweite Singleauskopplung Teenage Dreams nicht fehlen, welche 2023 bei den UK Music Video Awards als Best R&B/Soul Video - Newcomer nominiert war. Nach einer halben Stunde war der Opener Act des Abends vorbei und Konyikeh räumte die Bühne.

KONYIKEH © About Musïc | Stephanie Bauer Bereits kurze Zeit spätere lichtete sich der Vorhang und das Bühnenbild von Sam Smith kam zum Vorschein - auf mehreren Etagen, im Vordergrund liegt eine riesige Statue auf dessen Körper mehrere Schlagworte wie LIBERATION, POWER oder JUSTICE stehen. In der Mitte der Statue führen Treppen herunter und oberhalb davon nehmen bereits die ersten Musiker Platz. Um Punkt 20:30 Uhr wird die Bühne schwarz und die ersten Tänzer kommen in komplett schwarz gekleidet und mit Sonnenbrillen auf die Bühne und entzünden bengalische Feuer. Wenige Sekunden später ertönen die ersten Takte von Stay With Me und die drei Backgroundsänger stimmen dazu ein. Mit einem solchen Welthit ein Set zu beginnen muss man auch erstmal bringen. Damit setzt Sam Smith die Messlatte für den Freitagebend schon mal richtig hoch an - und eins können wir vorweg nehmen - wir wurden nicht enttäuscht von dem, was noch kam. Sam Smith erscheint bei den letzten Takten des Intros oben auf der Statue - ganz in schwarz gekleidet, die Jacke an den Schultern mit glitzer und Fransen verziert und mit einer Art Polizistenmütze steht Sam Smith dort und lässt sich von den Stuttgartern feiern - Mütze und Sonnenbrille legt Xier bei den ersten Tönen ab, an den Ohren hängen kleine silberne Ohrringe, die den Look abrunden.

An der linken Bühnenseite hat sich übrigens direkt zu Anfang eine junge Frau eingefunden, die die Songtexte in Gebährdensprache übersetzt. Erst zum dritten Song Like I Can verlässt Sam die Position oben auf der Statue und findet den Weg nach vorne auf die Bühne.

Zum einen berichtet Xier, dass seine Shows in Deutschland zu den besten der ganzen Gloria Tour gehört haben, was natürlich zu tosendem Applaus führt. To Love whoever you wanna Love. Nach diesen Worten, die bei den Stuttgartern natürlich hervorragend ankommen und mit Jubelrufen untermalt werden, bedankt sich Sam Smith bei den Bandkollegen und umarmt alle einzeln.

SAM SMITH © About Musïc | Stephanie Bauer Nach How Do You Sleep wird die Bühne kurz dunkel und alle inklusive Sam Smith verlassen die Bühne - Momente später erscheinen Ruth O'Mahony Brady am Piano und Sam Smith in einem wunderschönen und Pompösen schwarzen Abendkleid und langen ebenso auffälligen Ohrringen, die xier bis zu den Schlüsselbeinen reichen. Sam Smith findet wieder ein paar Worte an das Publikum und berichtet, dass es ein ganz besonderes Jahr ist, denn dieses Jahr wird das vorher schon erwähnte Debütalbum ganze 10 Jahre alt. Nach Lay Me Down verschwindet Xier erneut von der Bühne, und die Lichter und Tänzer lassen erahnen, dass es nun vom romantischen Teil übergehen wird zum poppigeren Teil, der mit Gimme eingestimmt wird. Das neue Outfit von Sam Smith besteht nun ganz légère aus schwarzer Hose, Weste und Baseball Cap. Auf der Bühne schaart Sam Smith von Song zu Song immer mehr Tänzer um sich, die einen mit den teils schon akrobatischen Einlagen nur staunen lassen. Bei den den letzten Tönen von Promises beziehungsweise den ersten Tönen von I'm Not Here To Make Friends legen zwei der Tänzer Sam einen Bodenlangen, aus viel Stoff und Rüschen Umhang in Regenbogenfarben an, den er in der zweiten Hälfte um zu Tanzen ablegt. Während des Songs erscheint dafür als Hingucker eine Drag-Queen - ebenfalls wie die Tänzer passend in Schwarz und Glitzer gekleidet. Es folgt ein erneuter Outfitwechsel, diesmal kommt Sam Smith in schwarzer Hose und eigenem Gloria Tour Merchandise zurück auf die Bühne. Natürlich durfte auch der Mega Hit Latch nicht fehlen, den Sam 2012 gemeinsam mit Disclosure veröffentlichte und der in diesem Jahr eine Billion Spotify Streams erzielte. Und auch hier tanzte im Vordergrund die Drag-Queen Isaïa Badaoui. Das Outfit von Sam Smith war nicht von Dauer, denn nach nur wenigen Songs zieht Sam das T-Shirt aus und steht Oberkörperfrei vor den Stuttgartern, die dieses mit Jubeln und Gröhlen feiern.

SAM SMITH © About Musïc | Stephanie Bauer Der letzte Akt des Konzertes ist angebrochen, als der Kirchenchor von Gloria, dem Namengebenden Song des aktuellen Albums ertönt und Sam Smith auf einmal mit bodenlangem Schwarzen Leder-Lack Mantel vorne an der Bühne steht. Ein fulminanter Abschluss bildet der letzte Song des Abends - der passender nicht sein könnte. Der Mantel fällt und darunter kommt ein Hauch von nichts zum Vorschein - die Backgroundtänzer sammeln sich wieder um Sam Smith, legen Xier einen langen schwarzen Rock an und schon ertönen die ersten Noten von Unholy - ein Song, auf den ganz Stuttgart gehofft und gewartet hat. Mit einer verruchten sexy Tanzeinlage entlässt Sam Smith Stuttgart in den Freitagabend. Die Stimmgewalt und Live Qualität von Sam Smith hat uns an diesem Abend absolut begeistert, ebenso wie dankbar und mit wieviel Freude und Herz Sam Smith auf der Bühne stand und jede Menge Liebe an Stuttgart weitergab und auch immer wieder darauf verwies wie wichtig ihm das ist.
