✧ Blurbs and Headcanons: I have a ko-fi where you can donate a coffee directly to me without being compensated if you so choose, or where I will write a blurb or headcanons for you if you leave your request and (optional) tumblr url in the message with your coffee.  blurbs will be min. 300 and max. 450 words per coffee (they are $3.00 each so it is discounted from my rate).  you can always message me to commission a blurb if you don’t want to pay through the ko-fi site.

✧ Drabbles: message me to commission a drabble. they will be a maximum of 1,000 - 1,200 words ($10 - 12) before it becomes a oneshot.  if you’re unsure if your request will be a blurb or a drabble, let me know! i’ll try to keep it as short as I can if you’d rather only pay for a blurb.

✧ Oneshots: please message me to commission a oneshot. i ask that you allow for a minimum of 1,300 - 2,000 words ($13 - 20) or it likely won’t be long enough to fulfill your request.  if your oneshot gets longer than 3,000 words, I will discount the rate from that point on to $0.0025 per word (this translates to $0.25 per extra hundred words after 3,000).  i will always round down for you if your total includes partial cents.

BUT ok one that i still kind of want to write that i actually info-dumped about in ur inbox, zainab, is a very obscure star wars outlander au where claire is force sensitive and escaped order 66 (a la the jedi fallen order cal storyline) and thats her Big Secret & she and jamie are part of a rebel cell in the years the alliance is still in its infancy (so pre rogue one). look. its very hard to explain but the concept keeps banging around in my head in a v resonant way? also there was that one terminator movie like ten years ago with sam worthington or whoever but in it bryce dallas howard was a medical officer in the human resistance and also pregnant and that was VIBES so that is also a part of this complicated force sensitive claire au. which i will one day write if i can only figure out how neatly to avoid plot exposition, as i do. also geillis fakes her death at one point and is not a villain and shows up at their cell and she and claire have a moment. a secondary also is that the main theme of it needs to be faith that one’s actions in a hopeless world are not useless. thats a very important and key element of this fic idea bc i, out of some sort of righteous indignance at canon probably, cannot write oultander fic without belligerently inserting thematic vision into it.

Jake Sully And Why He Kinda Flopped

So. I’ve made it no secret that on this blog I don’t really like Jake. When I hear people who saw “Avatar” and just forgot about it, they usually call Jake “that white dude protagonist.” And that’s pretty much because that’s about as memorable as he is. Sam Worthington isn’t a big name actor, and wasn’t doing a lot when he was cast as Jake. He wasn’t super memorable. He looks like the kinda guy you’d see at a gas station and you’d think “oh he’s kinda cute” and then you’d forget about him later. But that’s only part of the problem. I’m gonna try to unpack some of the reasons why Jake Sully sort of failed at creating a memorable character.

1. His Personality: he doesn’t really have one. Jake is pretty much a blank slate character. I can’t really think of anything about him that stands out except that he has a deadpan sense of humor. Like he just feels really flat, and he lacks a lot of depth. I think this is because Jake, while being the protagonist, is not the main focus of the world. To roughly quote a video I saw once (admittedly on why Tori from “Victorious” sucks), Jake exists not for himself, but to show the world around him. As such, he lacks a lot of his own unique traits. We as viewers want to see the Na’vi, want to see Pandora and the flora and fauna. This movie is an exception of those things, with Jake primarily serving almost as the viewer’s self-insert. He lacks depth, so you can project yourself on to him easily, if you so desire.

2. The Deleted Scenes: The deleted scenes of Avatar are a treasure trove of fantastic content. They add SO MUCH to the story, and quite frankly it’s disappointing they were left out. For example, the extended dinner scene when Jake is first in Hometree. He asks Neytiri for her name, and then asks what they’re eating. When she tells him, he starts making jokes about “Grandma’s Teylu.” The next deleted scene, “The Pied Piper,” we see him being followed by curious Na’vi children. He turns around and playfully roars at them, making them all giggle. This shows us that Jake is funny and probably likes children. It makes him more....warm. I could go into detail about all the deleted scenes with Jake, but that would take a while, and I think I can sum it up to say that, while I still dislike him, the deleted scenes give him more character, and make him more 3-dimensional. 

3. The Military Guy Thing: One of Jake’s first lines is an old Marine favorite, “No such thing as an ex-Marine.” He then proceeds to narrate that most of the soldiers on Pandora “used to fight for freedom.” Uhhhh. Not quite. Jake was stationed in Venezuela, where he was injured. What was he doing down there? How did the US’s freedoms get down there? My closest guess/own headcanon is that he was there for oil, a dwindling resource. Jake expresses no regret for this until much later in the movie, when he tells Selfridge he “doesn’t want that blood on his hands.”  Jake tells Mo’at that he was from the “Jar-Head Clan” (barf). He and Colonel Quaritch joke about this later. He seems to not question the colonel until much later in the film, only when he’s fallen for Neytiri. 

4. He’s A White Savior: This is something I think the fandom should definitely acknowledge. He’s quite literally John Smith. Personally, I like to call him “Dances With Viperwolves.” You can enjoy the movie, you can like Jake, but I still think it’s important to acknowledge this trope. Jake is the one who is able to do what only five other Na’vi have been able to do in all their history. He’s Toruk Makto, the person who reaches legendary status by riding Toruk. How does he do it? He just jumps off his ikran onto Toruk’s back. That’s it. It gives me “if it was that easy, everyone would do it” vibes. So he shows up, after having a very direct role in the destruction of Hometree, betraying the Omaticaya, and causing the death of their leader and who knows how many, and YET just because of this, he is welcomed back without incident. HE is the one to save the Omaticaya people and to unite the clans. HE leads them to victory. In the deleted scene of Tsu’tey’s death, he gives Jake his title. Jake is the one who gets to lead the Omaticaya. After living with them for three months. Suddenly this random dude who can ride the Toruk gets to be in charge, with absolutely no training or skill. It doesn’t feel wholesome to me. I’ve reblogged it before, so I won’t link it now, but as I’ve said, Jack Saints video “Dances With White Saviors” does a good job of covering a lot of what I’ve said. 

5. He Suffers No Real Consequences: This sort of goes along with the above issue. Like I said, he betrays the Na’vi, Hometree falls, they leave him behind. At the RDA base, he’s locked up in prison for maybe a few hours. However, he’s quickly rescued by Trudy and Max. Once free, he becomes Toruk Makto and returns to the Omaticaya. They all welcome him as if he’s never done anything wrong. Nobody stands up and goes “hey wait didn’t this guy just cause our ancient ancestral home to be destroyed?” Only Tsu’tey has a few seconds of doubt before deciding to be okay with Jake. It feels like got off without an issue. The Na’vi act like his betrayal never happened, Neytiri, who lost her father as a result of his actions, doesn’t seem to care anymore. I know the actors have said this is because Jake is Toruk Makto, a very sacred thing to them. But again, it feels like a very cheap shortcut to getting Jake accepted again. He does one great thing and boom he’s golden. 

WELL that got long but I think this about covers it! This isn’t intended to shade anyone who likes Jake, but I just wanted to cover some of the reasons why he’s not memorable/really likable.

3. Scars or painful spots

hmm hmmm hmmmmmm had to think about this one, but given Ms. Arias grew up on a farm and despite her alien lineage, I think we’ll have to assume she has a scar related to being a farm kid—fell off a (stationary) tractor while climbing around the giant wheels, bb gun mishap while shooting squirrels, fell off a horse... Lots of falling off things. I’m actually gonna say minor scars from all three bc our gal is PERSISTENT.

Xena - 9. Humiliating memories

More “haha” humiliating but one time young Xena got sprayed by a skunk right before the Amphipolis Spring Solstice Festival and she was forced to stand at least fifty feet away from the actual party areas but Lyceus brought her all the special foods she wanted so it wasn’t all bad anyway

19. People they’ve hurt or indirectly killed, and how it affected them

ooh ooh ooh... Tough. Obviously, doctors make mistakes and so there may be some of that for Carina (honestly I don’t know if there’s a storyline abt this in Greys, I have seen maybe a couple episodes with her in it). But, I don’t think the most haunting of her experiences is at Grey-Sloan Memorial.

I think Carina volunteered with a group to help try and rescue Libyan refugees arriving by boat on the shores of Italy. Carina has a sort of understated, resolute integrity and self-confidence that would push her to try to go above and beyond to save lives, so I think in situations where the aid organization had to back off because of the Coast Guard and/or threats of arrest, Carina would be one of the people pushing to keep going anyway. There was a situation where the org’s leader made a different call, and Carina still carries the guilt and rage of watching the refugees being taken into custody by the government.

19. People they’ve hurt or indirectly killed, and how it affected them

Sabina’s trust in Charlie means she almost never has cause to question her missions, but all Angels have seen something go sideways, outside of their control. Sabina once pulled a DEBS/Witcher and developed feelings not for a protectee, but a suspected gun smuggler. She almost went full Sam Worthington in Avatar when she found out it was true, but the target managed to convince her she was just supporting populist causes in countries where warfare was on the ground... but Charlie showed her video proof that that wasn’t true, and the guns were being used to kill civilians. Sabina had to take her out.
