Like if this were fake then they’re doing too good a job and they have to dial it back. They have to sometimes look like they remember it’s fake. Like those dispersed moments of character break is really really important for this to be successful in the format of the business model of imaginary couples. Like even if the couple were really in a romantic relationship they would still have to pretend they were fake at times do you understand what I’m trying to say?

there is really interesting discussion to be had about the way dialects, not just accents, are used as shorthand in media regardless of origin. the way that Japanese media uses the Okinawan dialect in much the same way that USAmerican media uses the Southern dialect. the way that British media uses the Cockney dialect, and so on and so forth. and this extends past the narrative shorthand of “this dialect means bad and/or stupid person.” dialects are used to Other characters narratively, or to establish them as the in-group.

Great news that I just discovered: the new NHK asadora (short morning dorama) Maiagare! is being subbed. Our Cherry darling Akaso Eiji has a starring role in it, which is a nice big deal, and he’s already getting lots of magazine coverage in Japan because of it. Yay, as long as it’s not a gigantic lift to get/watch the episodes, I’ll be adding it to my list!
