Can someone please do a retelling of one piece from Wado Ichimonji’s perspective.
Because Zoro talks to his swords and whenever someone gives them personality I love it.
For generations Wado was stuck at a dojo as a guard and that’s great but then Kuina comes around and starts dreaming of more. She has the skill to becomes something more then a dojo owner and Wado can feel it. Adventure is coming.
But then Kuina dies.
And the dream is over. Wado is going to stay as a guard for this dojo for years to come.
Except that crazy kid, the one who liked to fight Kuina. The one whose first day at the dojo grabbed as many swords as he could hold because THAT was a good fighting style. Is begging Wado’s old master to GIVE him Wado Ichimonji. And there is a prideful part of Wado that wonders how the kid dares because she belongs to the Shimotsuki clan. Not this no name orphan. But then Zoro declares his dream.
To become the worlds strongest swordsman and make the heaven know his AND Kuina’s name.
And ya he’s crazy but in the best way. And Wado Ichimonji decides it wants to go with him. She wants to see what this little no name can become. Because in the moment he declares his dream she believes him.
So there partnership starts but Zoro still needs to prove himself. Wado never fails him as a blade and Zoro grows stronger developing his skill. By the time Zoro sets out Wado adores her idiot son.
Now if only he could get her some appropriate company. If he’s going to insist on using three blades (she is more then enough and could bring him to the top on her own just fine thank you very much) he could at least get her some higher grade swords to talk to. But so far they are so low level they can’t even communicate with her.
But that will come with time. At least they’ve left the dojo.
But Zoro, despite his skill and passion, is terrible at directions and they are lost. (It takes her a long time to admit to herself that her son is directionless, she is a prideful sword and she is very proud of him)
And then comes their lowest moment. When that sniveling brat stole her and her companions from Zoro and tied her boy up in the yard like a dog. How dare he! How dare he attempt to wield her (I love Helmeppo trying to wield Wado in opla) this is degrading, where is Zoro!?!
Then this kid comes in. And at first she ignores him because, he’s not Zoro😠 but then the boy is grabbing her and her companions, and how dare he! But then he says something about Zoro, but there’s no way Zoro sent this boy to come get them. And now they boy is taking them somewhere and Wado’s not sure what is worst, the blond who doesn’t know how to wield them or this boy who barly knows how to carry them.
But the kid takes her back to Zoro! The kid saves Zoro’s life! And for that she can be thankful. Except the kid instantly turns around and blackmails Zoro. And how dare he! Zoro is her swordsman. They will not bow to such a boy. But Zoro agrees.
Wado knows Zoro is an honorable swordsman and won’t go back on his word. But really, this boy is their captain?
And sure it’s fun to fight next to him. And he believes in Zoro’s dream, in their goal. (And has anyone ever believed in Zoro besides her?) and he’s got his own crazy dream. Maybe, the boy isn’t so bad. He did return her to Zoro, and saved her boy. Maybe having this boy as their captain will be a good thing?
Zoro seems to like him. And the captain has done what she couldn’t for Zoro. He put him on a path to his dream. So ya Wado decides pretty quickly that she likes the captain.
The navigator is obviously hiding something. Wado’s been around for a long time and she knows the girl is hiding something from the boys. Zoro knows to but he’s not willing to push, not when the captain isn’t.
The sniper is silly. Wado likes him. She hopes he becomes stronger soon but she like him. The captain smiles around him and he makes Zoro laugh. Nothing else matters.
At the Baratie they met Mihawk. And Wado is ready. She knows her master is strong. This is their goal. Their dream. And while she didn’t think they would get here so soon, she’ll have to thank Captain for that, she’s ready to face their destiny.
The captain doesn’t stop them, and for that he earns her loyalty because he believes in Zoro just as much as she does.
But the unthinkable happens. They lose. And Zoro is hurt. (Never mind the death of her two companions they weren’t talkers anyhow, her boy is hurt!)
But then Zoro his drawling her again. And for a moment she fears her idiot will try to fight again. Instead he makes and oath upon her blade. To never lose again until he becomes the world’s greatest swordsman. And he makes this oath to the king of the pirates. Their captain.
And from that moment Wado knows two things, they will defeat Mihawk, and Monkey D. Luffy is their king. And Zoro and Wado will defend him like one. What ever he needs his swords will do. For Zoro is the sword of the pirate king and Wado Ichimonji is Zoro’s sword.
The first test is Arlong park. Wado Ichimonji enjoys cutting the fish man down. They hurt the navigator. Zoro cares for the navigator. And their king wants her own their crew. So they will remove any obstacle in the way of what their king wants.
She meets the cook for the first time at Arlong park. At least it’s the first time she’s paid attention to him. She can admit he’s an excellent fighter. But something about him grates on her. And she can tell that Zoro feels much the same as her. There’s nothing wrong with him per say. She’s just can’t wrap her head around the idea of a human not fighting with their hands.
Making it to Lodgetown brings with it the opportunity for new swords (because Zoro still insists on using three) and this is where Wado meets her worst nightmare.
Sandai Kitetsu.

Ace (or Roger's) anthropomorphised sword is a hella lot cooler than Law's or Zoro's (or even Mihawk's)

Playing faves?
This came from Artur from the Library of Ohara (on Twitter), SBS for Volume 108.
Tumblr media
Oda draws an anthropomorphized version of Roger's sword, "Ace"
Law's sword (Kikoku):

The above is also from Artur, although I uploaded a copy from the manga earlier, but don't know in which file I saved the file. Zoro's swords (below):

or even Mihawk's!

I think Tashigi's sword was done in a One Piece Party, maybe! Can't find anything, so maybe I'm getting that wrong.

What's funny about Zoro is that he canonically bathes once a week but I'm sure he always cleans his sweords and keeps them in a good shape.
So I just imagine stinky and covered-in-drit Zoro walking around with his three swords which are literally glowing and smell like flowers.

Let’s keep going with Wado Ichimonji’s point of view.
When they arrive at Lodgetown the whole place is weird. Wado was already annoyed because Zoro insisted on getting two new swords. She can already tell that this is NOT the place to get quality swords. She going to get stuck once again with two blades not worthy of Zoro’s skill and it will just be a matter of time until they can’t take his strength anymore and break. (If he has to use other blades can he at least wait until they find high quality blades like her)
Then on top of it they run into Tashigi. The kiuna look a like makes Wado physically rattle in her scabbard. How dare this look a like come here and mock her old masters memory! How dare she mess with her boys head!
Eventually they get away from her and Zoro finds his way to the swords shop. And Wado hears it. This incessant whining. And she realizes two things. There is at least ONE grade blade in this store. This normally would fill her with hope. Finally a companion she could talk to. Obviously they aren’t one of the 21 great blades like she is, but it’s a definite improvement. Except for the second thing she realizes. This blade is cursed. And she won’t shut up! Whining for a new master so that she can kill again (until she kills her master again)
She’s just so annoying.
And she’s currently in a barrel of regular swords. This sales man is an idiot. All she can hope is that Zoro doesn’t hear her calls.
The shop owner then tries to BUY her from Zoro. He’s not just an idiot he’s a greedy imbecilic. Luckily that annoying look alike arrived and recognized her. And off course the Kuina look alike would know her name (sigh) but at least Zoro know it now! Her boy is calling her by name! He knows just how incredible she is now, one of the 21 great grade blades! Maybe she can forgive this look alike.
Except she leads Zoro right to that cursed blade.
No! Death for look a like! Wado will never forgive her for this.
Except Zoro already knows this blade was cursed. He had heard her calls the moment he walked into the store. Because of course he did. Her boy is the best. He can hear their (the swords) voices so well. But why Her.
Sandai Kitetsu is this new blades name.
As soon as Zoro touches her she starts begging. Begging for blood. Begging for battle. And Wado knows Zoro’s heart. Knows him to be a loyal and honorable man.
She also knows he’s feral and bloodthirsty in his own way. Has been since he was a child.
Sandai Kitetsu is calling for the right person. And of course her idiot son hears this curse blade voice, and is warned by two people not to use her. And what does he decide? To test his luck against the swords curse by throwing it in the air and seeing if it will chop of his arm. Wado is furious.
Wado already knows the end result.
Sandai Kitetsu spins right past his arm. Not just past it but the back of her blade faced Zoro’s arm the whole time. She never would have cut him.
Wado can hear her clearly now when Zoro picks her up again.
“New master! Strong master! Won’t hurt master! You’re like me, you’re hungry to fight like me. Please let me fight!”
Her whining is incessant. It won’t stop! Wado already hates her. She not worried about Zoro falling to the curse, he’s to strong and two stubborn for that. And she can tell Sandai Kitetsu won’t hurt him as long as he brings her to battle. But does she have to be so annoying!
The swords sales man has been talking this whole time but Wado hadn’t been paying attention. To focused on her future roommate and annoyance to care for this human. Until she hears another voice
Yubashiri, a skillful grade blade. Far superior to this whining grade blade but not as great as she. It will do for a companion.
Yubashiri is quieter than Sandai Kitetsu, but that’s not hard. A hurricane is quieter than Sandai Kitetsu. But Yubashiri only talks when necessary. Wado is grateful for that.
Now Zoro has two high level blade plus her one of the 21 great blades. They will take Zoro farther in his journey. All the way to the top.
(Is it wrong of her to hope that he breaks Sandai Kitetsu?)
Regardless they leave the shop. And find their way back to their King. Only that stupid clown is back. And he’s trying to kill their King! How dare he!
So much happens. They almost lose their king, something Wado will not except, for Zoro won’t except it. Zoro needs his captain, they need their king. But he is saved by what the cook calls a miracle. Wado calls it to close and will never let it get that close again. Then they have to fight look a like. And Wado was right. The girl may look like Kuina, but she doesn’t fight like her. Zoro wins quickly and without any true struggle. THAT’S HER BOY!
Now they are on their way to the grand line.
The swords take the time to get accustomed to each other. Yubashiri is quick to accept their role in the ship, Luffy is captain and king, the rest of the crew is namaka. They protect the crew.
Sandai Kitsune is not as impressed. Why are they following the rubber boy? I mean as long as he brings her to a good fight then he’s alright in her book, but why protect him? Or the others? Swords are made to fight. If they attack we fight them.
Wado gets tried of trying to explain to a curse blade why she needs to care. It’s because Zoro cares! But it’s fine. She didn’t like their King at first either. Sandai Kitsune will understand soon.
Or Zoro won’t keep her around.
Maybe it’s best if Sandai Kitsune never understand why Luffy is King!
(She will. Once they get to the grandline. Once she sees Luffy and Zoro in action together. Once she see what it means to fight Luffy in Wiskey peaks)

—————
Training with Enma was exhausting, both physically and mentally. Not only was the sword heavy—heavier than any of the swords Zoro had handled before—he also had to constantly watch the size of the slashes while trying to control how much haki Enma was draining from him. It was hard work but Zoro enjoyed the challenge.
After all, training by himself with no clear hurdle in sight wasn’t nearly as fun. But now he had to learn about Enma and its quirks, with the very real threat of being turned into a dried-up husk looming over him, and the absolute time limit of the night of the Fire Festival to do so. It was… exhilarating.
If he didn’t pay attention to every little change in behaviour, the katana would eat up every last drop of Zoro’s haki—and with it, every last drop of his life force.
It reminded him of the two years he had spent with Mihawk.
Training under that man, he also had to be on guard the whole time—lose focus for one second and you can say goodbye to more than a single eye. Zoro had learned that the hard way.
And it wasn’t just about Hawk Eyes Mihawk either. There were also those damn monkeys and worst of all…
“I’m so bored!” Perona whined from where she sat perched on top of the ruins.
Zoro rolled his eyes, simply biting into Wado Ichimonji’s hilt harder. “Then go away. I didn’t ask you to come with me,” he growled, not even taking his eyes off the monkey in front of him.
“What?! I’m keeping you company here! Be more grateful, you jerk! You’re so not cute,” she huffed, draining the rest of the wine in her glass.
Zoro rolled his eyes before taking a deep breath—in and out, in and out. He needed to focus. If he wanted Wado Ichimonji and Sandai Kitetsu to turn into black blades, he couldn’t let her distract him.
“Let it flow through your body. From your centre of gravity to the tips of your fingers. Your swords are an extension of your body. Let the haki reach and envelop them,” Zoro repeated Mihawk’s words like a mantra. He imagined the haki gathering in his stomach, expanding, moving through his veins. He could feel it on the skin of his hands, covering them like thin armour. But that wasn’t enough. He had to move it more, use it more. Push it forward and—
“We're out of wine, go get some more!”
Zoro’s eye twitched. “SHUT UP! You’re distracting me, woman!” he snapped, taking Wado Ichimonji out of his mouth to instead bare his teeth at her. Stupid pink-haired ghost brat. He couldn’t train like this!
“Roronoa,” someone else spoke up and Zoro’s glare turned to Hawk Eyes, who was sitting right next to Perona, the expensive red wine swirling in the elegant glass in his hand. “If this pointless chatter is enough to break your focus, then I guess you’re even weaker than I thought.” If Zoro didn’t know any better, he’d think the man was smirking at him.
Asshole.
Gritting his teeth, Zoro shot one last glare at the man before placing his katana back between his teeth. He closed his eyes.
Breathe in, breathe out.
“And you, ghost girl,” Mihawk continued. “Go bring more wine.”
“Excuse me?! I’m not your servant!” Perona yelled back, her high-pitched voice tearing Zoro’s concentration to shreds again.
Mihawk huffed. “You’re the one who complained that there wasn’t any.”
Zoro didn’t bother to hold back the snort at Mihawk’s bored, matter-of-fact tone and Perona’s upset wailing. It was just too funny; he didn’t even mind the distraction anymore.
“Are you laughing at me, you grass-headed idiot?!” Perona cried, pointing an accusing finger at Zoro for good measure.
Zoro only laughed harder—until Perona let out a frustrated noise before calling out, “Negative Hollow!”
“Hey, wait—” Zoro barely managed to say before four ghosts flew right through his chest. He didn’t even have the time to try and jump out of the way, goddamnit!
For a second, nothing happened.
But then, Zoro lost all his strength. First, Wado Ichimonji dropped from his mouth. Next, Shuusui slipped through his fingers with Sandai Kitetsu closely following it.
And finally, Zoro’s knees gave out.
Dropping to the ground, his fingers dug into the dusty, dried-up soil; Zoro clutched at the dead grass and pressed his forehead into the dirt as if he was trying to bury his head in it. “I’m sorry for being alive…”
Immediately, the stupid monkey he was supposed to be fighting let out a victorious cry not unlike evil laughter before it dashed forward, aiming to take Zoro out while he was incapacitated.
And Zoro didn’t care. He really should just die. He was a waste of oxygen on this earth.
“If I can be reborn… I want to become the moss on the castle wall…”
Shaking his head to bring himself back to the present, Zoro cursed internally. Stupid, annoying woman. If he closed his eyes, he could still hear her shrill laughter and see the way her irritating ghosts would stick their tongues out at him, taunting him, and driving him absolutely insane while their master tried to order Zoro around.
Zoro so didn’t miss her.
Not one bit.
“Zorojuro, your arm!”
Zoro blinked, glancing towards Momonosuke, who was staring at his right hand with obvious panic in his eyes before his gaze dropped down to Enma. This little shit.
“Stop it,” Zoro hissed as he forced his haki back inside. Only when every last drop was back did he look at the young boy next to him again. “Thanks, Momo. Damn woman, distracting me even when she’s not here.”
“Woman?” Momo asked, his face twisting with confusion.
“Never mind.” Zoro shook his head to make himself focus. This wouldn’t do. He couldn’t let anything draw his attention away—least of all something stupid like this.
—————
Making a katana one's own wasn't as easy as some people thought. There was more to it than swinging the sword around—no matter if you knew how to do that or if you were like Luffy and went around punching people with it. It simply wasn't enough to own a sword.
"A swordsman must master the sword’s personality and bend it to his will."
Remembering the words the old man back in the Shimotsuki Village used to say—the words he used to drill into his head—now, Zoro had to laugh at his younger self. He had really thought he understood what it meant.
It seemed like the answer was obvious back then, after all, especially since Wado Ichimonji had felt like a part of him from the moment Kuina's father had handed it to him. The sword could feel his desire to make Kuina's dream come true and accepted him as its wielder the moment Zoro's hands closed around the hilt for the first time. It let him draw on its strength and stability without hesitation or any sign of distrust from the very beginning. Zoro had learned a lot of things from Wado Ichimonji, being the first named sword he’d ever handled, and it taught him all of them with patience—far more patience than Zoro’s childish, over-confident self had deserved.
Mastering Yubashiri was just as easy. The katana that was gifted to him honouring its previous owner’s wishes, carrying the man’s dreams and letting Zoro take them over. It was a good sword, calm and easygoing as if to reflect how light it felt in Zoro’s hand.
Of course, then there was Sandai Kitetsu. A cursed sword—though the old man would just scoff and roll his eyes if he had heard Zoro call it that—with a personality to match. It was cheeky, loved pushing the limits of what Zoro allowed it to do, rebelling in little ways. But Zoro had proved himself to it all the way back in Logue Town when he had pitched his luck against the sword’s incredibly sharp edge—and he knew Kitetsu recognized him for that.
Even this problem child had yielded before Zoro by the time their first fight together had ended.
It was a little bit more difficult with Shuusui; the black blade had strength, weight, and power and it knew it. The confidence combined with Shuusui’s independent personality made it difficult to control at first. It probably didn’t help Zoro’s case that Shuusui’s previous owner was a legendary samurai; a man who, even in death, commanded respect and possessed formidable skill. If that wasn’t enough, its black blade gave Shuusui that much more of an advantage against all Zoro’s previous swords, and against Zoro himself.
In retrospect, however…
Learning to control Shuusui wasn’t as much about mastering its personality as it was about gaining trust. About showing the powerful, experienced sword that Zoro had the ability to fulfil its expectations.
When he thought about it now, Zoro had never had to work with a sword that was so stubborn and headstrong that he had to really put an effort into taming it.
He had never fully grasped what the old man was telling him.
Not until old man Hitetsu had handed Enma to him.
“Cut down one of those trees to test its edge,” he had told him.
His tone made Zoro frown but the moment his fingers closed around the hilt, he knew why Hitetsu had said it that way.
This wasn’t going to go well.
As soon as he swung Enma, causing the entire goddamned cliff to go down… he finally understood. The fact that Enma then went on to try and drain every last bit of his haki was just an unnecessary confirmation, a sour cherry on top.
This was what Hitetsu had meant when he said no one except Oden had ever tamed Enma.
This was what the old man on the cliff behind the Shimotsuki village was trying to teach him.
To master Enma, he had to learn to master its personality.
The very same personality that Zoro could only describe as a stubborn, unruly little shit.
As he looked at Enma’s blade gleaming in the light, the irregular temper line pattern standing out beautifully, Zoro thought that it looked as if there was fire dancing over the steel; hot and dangerous, ready to burn everything in its path. Just like the sword itself was ready and eager to split the entire world in half.
A smirk pulled at Zoro’s lips. This was the sword that could cut Kaido.
“What shall we do? Would you like a different katana?” Hitetsu had asked a moment later.
Zoro huffed, his smirk widening. “No, I’ll take this one! Enma, huh?!”
He accepted this challenge.
He was going to tame this sword and make it his own—let its temper become his strength, its bratty personality the edge he needed. A push forward, helping him become that much closer to his goal.
He was going to become the world’s strongest. And this sword, this little shit…
He was going to make it a katana worthy of a man with such a title.
‘Enma, the sword that splits the earth to the bottom of hell.’
If he wanted to bend its hell of a personality to his will, to master it in the short time left before the Fire Festival, had to get stronger. Much, much stronger.
Only then was Enma going to become the thing to create the path for him.
The path that leads all the way to the lowest depths of hell.
