Supercorp Snippet Prompt #1

@pocket-sand-fic said on my pinned post: "Ooh! Love this series! Maybe something where Eliza and/or Alex and Maggie have the first real meeting with Lena as Kara’s gf. I’d love to see them being protective and question if Lena is really ready/prepared first the “bad days” Kara can have.”

Thank you for the kind words! Here is the little snippet I wrote at 1k words exactly (the first draft was nearly 2k, the second was 1.5k, and I brought the third down to 1k). Hope you enjoy!

"Kara entered the hospital, a contrasting wave of discomfort and ease rolling through her. It was bittersweet.

She looked around briefly before approaching the front desk with a smile, “Hi Jolene, how are you?”

“Kara, always a treat to see you here, hun. How’s your day been?”

“Good. I’m here to see Dr. Luthor and Dr. Danvers, would you mind paging them if they’re not busy?” Kara asked. 

Jolene was a lovely woman who had worked at the hospital longer than Kara remembered. She was always there with a smile on her face and a personality that could make even Mr. Scrooge merry. 

“Of course, hun. They’d love to see you. Go on over there,” She gestured to a waiting area, “They’ll be here shortly.”

“Thank you,” Kara patted the reception desk as she walked away. 

The waiting area was pleasantly spacious. With a five-hundred-gallon saltwater aquarium, well-organized children’s space, comfortable chairs, reading material, and water bottles, Kara was satisfied.

She sat in a toddler sized chair by the tank, picking up a toy car as she watched the fish. The stock was akin to Finding Nemo. It was vibrant, interactive, and captivating. Not dissimilar to a child, Kara could watch it all day.

Midvale General was nearly complete with its renovations since Lena purchased the hospital nearly two years ago and began the project. It was incredible to see how far it had come, from poorly built and outdated to modeling the latest technology and exceptional infrastructure. 

With an expansive courtyard lined with gardens, vast windows, and vibrant halls, the psychological healing Lena has incorporated into the medical center has been astronomical. 

Lena has revolutionized the small town’s understanding of healing and health.

Kara was proud of her and the impact she’d made on Midvale. On her life. 

Kara was pulled out of her thoughts as a little boy walked up to her, “Hi kid. Wha—”

He snatched the Hotwheels car out of her hands and ran off. She called out, baffled, “Hey!”

Unbeknownst to her, Lena stood watching from the reception desk, a grin on her face and a soft laugh escaping her throat.

Jolene shook her head, “Go get her before she starts a fight with a five-year-old.”

Lena barked out a laugh and made her way over to the blonde with a smile, fitting her hands in her coat pockets,  “What a surprise, Kara” 

The blonde’s head whipped around to face her. She stood from the children’s chair, only to have it lodge itself around her hips. The firefighter fumbled for a moment, but miraculously got it unstuck before setting it down on the floor. 

She inhaled deeply and offered Lena a dopey smile, longing to reach out and peck her girlfriend on the lips or wrap her in a brief hug. But, they were in the workplace, and their relationship was just theirs, as of now. 

Lena clasped her hands, “What are you doing here?”

Kara smiled brightly, holding up a brown bag, “I’m on my lunch break and I thought I’d bring you and Eliza sandwiches.”

She wanted to add that it'd been a slow day, but she knew what would happen if she said that aloud.

The brunette inched forward, but before words came out, her attention was drawn away by another presence.

“Hi, sweetie,” Eliza walked up to Kara and placed a kiss on her cheek, “What are you doing here?”

Kara repeated with a smile, “Brought you and Lena lunch.”

Eliza grinned gratefully, “That’s so thoughtful, sweetie. Should we eat together in the courtyard?”

Kara checked her watch, “I have some time,” She looked at her mother and Lena, smiling as they started walking, “How’s your day been?”

Eliza was the first to bring up something unrelated to surgery while they were operating, “Dr. Luthor.” 

Her words were soft and nearly quiet, but Lena noted they were laced with something.

The Chief of Surgery hummed without losing concentration, “Dr. Danvers.”

“How long have you and my daughter been together?” Eliza asked without missing a beat. 

The nurses, though forced to listen to their conversation, kept quiet.

Lena’s hands never lost their momentum. The surgery was muscle memory at this point, and she was expertly going through the motions. She inhaled through her mask, “A little over a month.”

Eliza nodded, watching Lena’s movements. 

She stayed silent until fifteen minutes later and the two surgeons were scrubbing out, “I can tell you two care a lot about each other.”

“We do,” Lena nodded as she dried her hands.

“Are you happy?” Eliza asked caringly. 

Lena hummed, her tone and words left no room for question, “I’ve never been happier than I am when I’m with Kara and I’ve never loved anyone as much as I do her.”

Eliza smiled, “That’s all a mother can hope for,” Shectossed her towels in the trash, “It’s not my business and I’m sure you’re already aware,” 

Lena nodded.

“My daughter,” Eliza cleared her throat, “Kara suffers from serious PTSD. I’ve seen days where she doesn’t know where she is, or who I am. She’s changed since her time overseas.”

Lena swallowed, “I don’t mean to sound rude, Dr. Danvers, but where are you going with this?”

“I want to make sure that you’re safe with her and that you’re strong enough for those days because,” Eliza inhaled shakily, “Each one will destroy a part of you.” She wiped her wet eyes, “I want nothing but the best for you both, sweetheart. But I need to know that when the going gets tough, she can rely on you and you can come out the other end alright too.”

Lena inhaled deeply, “Of course. I love Kara so, so much. At the end of the day, I want her to know that I will always be there for her. I can handle the hard days, without a doubt Dr. Danvers.”

Eliza stepped forward and wrapped Lena in a hug, “Call me Eliza, dear.” 

Welcome to the family."

Well, what did you think? This will be part of my 8th installment to Your Love Was Home Supercorp series on AO3. I'm working on the 7th right now. It was a big challenge to limit myself to 1k words. I had to take so much out, which I will put right back into the 10-15k one shot, including Alex and Maggie's "reaction".

“How long do you think we’ve got?” Maggie asks.

They turn a corner and come to a stop, leaning against the walls as they catch their breath.

“Sixty seconds maybe?” Alex says. She looks down the hallway in front of them as it splits into two directions. “Which way?”

“No idea,” Maggie says. “My gut says right.”

Alex smiles. “Mine too.”

She reaches out to grab Maggie’s hand and starts to move, but Maggie pulls her back for a moment, a teasing smile on her face.

Alex knows what she wants. She glances over her shoulder, the sound of footsteps close behind them. “Uh, we don’t have time for this.”

Maggie grins and kisses her anyway.

“Come on Danvers, let’s run!”

“The paint's supposed to go where?” Alex’s voice squeaks through the words.

“On your skin,” Lucy repeats with an eye roll. “It’s a human form class, what did you expect?”

“That I would be wearing clothes!”

“I don’t see what the problem is,” Maggie chimes in from her desk and Mexican Lit essay.

Alex spins towards her. “You didn’t unknowingly agree to be a nude model.”

“You’ll be painted,” Lucy huffs. “And can have pasties on and I need somebody so I pass this stupid arts requirement.”

Alex groans. “Fine, but you owe me big.”

Lucy smirks. “Whatever you want.”

This is a prompt I've been meaning to write, and just haven't felt super inspired about ideas 😭. So if anyone has specific things they want to see in regards to Alex, Maggie, or Lucy dealing with chest dysphoria, let me know!

As it stands, I'm looking at a scene with Lucy and either Vas or Alex at the DEO (pre-director sanvers), where they've both slipped away for a minute to breathe.

Coming to you a little late because life, but, here we are. January first happens to be a Sunday this year, so that's where we're starting. The prompts through the week are

I'm curious, having just read The beast within, the supercorp A/B/O where alphas and omegas compete in a mating run to find their mates. I loved the fic by the way, top level work. Is there any information regarding A/B/O dynamics, any sites you use that you can direct us to, I've read a decent number of A/B/O fics on aoe, some with supercorp, others with sanvers, any information you can give us would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, I’m so happy you enjoyed the story! I don’t actually have any sources that I use, though I’m sure somewhere out there someone’s probably done a wonderful job of making a list of things for the omegaverse. I tend to wing it, so to speak, so that every story I write is like stepping into a different world. Beast Within was born from a prompt one of my patrons gave me about a mating run, and I had no real idea what that was, so I tried to base it off of my assumptions and a quick Google search. I know I scanned one Alpha/Alpha mating run fic just to get a sense of the trope at the time, but it wasn't very helpful.

I don’t want my readers getting bored with the same things so I try to come up with little changes to fit each story and verse. Every story can differ between the ABO dynamics, the societal roles fashioned around them and even the politics. Sometimes I play with the biology aspect, and have omega Lena claim alpha Kara first (as seen in The Beauty of Experience). If it’s fun for me to write, then hopefully it’s fun for my patrons to read, and I love creating all of these different versions so nothing gets stale.

The amazing @dkgwrites is not only a terrific writer, but she's also got a knack for encouraging people and bringing them together. We're extremely thankful for her presence and her many contributions to FtF. Today, she joins us to talk about writing and the importance of finding your people.

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started writing fic? Have you written for other fandoms? What are your favorite tropes?  

a) As a kid, I read a lot and used to create plot outlines for favorite shows that my childhood BFF and I would act out in improvisational skits in one of our basements. As much as I was always drawn to write, I never had any formal training, nothing past high school, and was well aware that my skill level didn't make me commercially publishable. I had given up on ever sharing this part of my creative side when a coworker mentioned she wrote fanfic. I had never heard of it. I went home and googled the word fanfic with my two favorite story subjects (superhero and lesbian) and SuperCorp was the top response. I signed up for AO3, read a few fics, and watched some SuperCorp clips on YT before jumping in with both feet and writing my first fic without having seen an episode of Supergirl yet. That was five years ago, and 1.4 million words (and counting) later, here I am. 

b) I've written in other fandoms twice. Once for Black Lightning (ThunderGrace) for the BLDC zine event, and once in the Legends of Tomorrow fandom (Avalance) for a fic trade event. Both times I was rather nervous, wading outside familiar waters, but I think both fics turned out well. I have some unposted WIPs for Wynonna Earp which I was never able to fully explore. Outside that, I've stayed firmly in my lane in the Supergirl fandom with a heavy dose of SuperCorp, a little bit of AgentCorp, a touch of Sanvers, and a single Brania fic. Danvaria will make guest appearances in some of my fics.

c) My top three tropes would be miscommunication (because I am one whole idiot), friends to lovers (thank you SuperCorp), and fake dating, not necessarily in that order.  What were your inspirations for this particular story? What was it about this/these ships that grabbed you?

a) This particular fic was a prompt from a reader, probably the first prompt I ever received. It's an au where Lena is the Kryptonian but also a vegetarian, and Kara is the Luthor. I expanded it a bit from there, but it gave me my introduction to aus, and I absolutely adore them. They combine the comfort and ease of familiar characters with the creativity of an original(ish) universe.

b) SuperCorp is the main ship for this fic. I enjoy the way Kara and Lena compliment each other, the play on darkness and light, raw power and intellect, and the whole rather Romeo and Julietesque love despite their warring families. I think this fandom has proven, again and again, how magical these two are together. I feel lucky to have entered fandom at a time to be able to write them. Has the time spent away from your story changed your outlook or approach to any of the storylines or themes? Have you had any new inspirations or breakthroughs/revelations in the meantime?

a) I wouldn't say time away has altered my approach to this particular story, but I have grown and developed a lot as a writer in the past four years. If I were rewriting from scratch (give me the strength not to do so) the story would be more direct, less meandering, and I wouldn't use dialogue as my crutch due to a lack of skill at narrative. I'm not sure how well the first few chapters will marry with the second part, but I hope it makes for an enjoyable, if oddly off balance, final story.

b) I think I have greatly developed as a writer since I started this fic. Do you remember when you were a kid, and your parent would stand you with your back to the wall and mark how tall you were? Each year you could go back and see how tall you've gotten. That is exactly how this fic makes me feel. I look at the old chapters and then the new and think "Look how I've grown." Any advice for new or aspiring fic writers?

I have more advice than I should put in any post, so I'll try to reduce it to a few salient points. Read a lot, and when you do, read as a writer. What lines do you like, and why do they resonate with you? What pulls you out of the story and why? Make note of the things you love and dislike, make lists and reflect on them when you write, and learn from those who have come before you.

Become a beta reader for others. I swear, I have learned more about writing from beta'ing than anything else. As a beta, you are forced to read mindfully, to really dissect the story, and you can't help but carry that mindset over into your own writing. Additionally, the writing community falls apart when we don't have betas, so do your part.

Outline. You may think you don't need to outline. (You probably do.) You may think an outline crimps creativity. (It does not.) Your outline may just be a few lines or a full blown spreadsheet (Excel is much sexier than most give it credit for being) but learning to organize your thoughts, even if you discover whole new paths and veer wildly off script as you write, will help you. Take it from someone who wishes they had known that sooner. Get yourself a writing community and be open to critique. Too often when we say, "What do you think?" about one of our stories, what we really mean is, "Say something nice about this." That's fine. You may only be in the emotional space to receive fully positive feedback, but when you open yourself up to kind but honest critiques, you improve your chances of growing. For me, my writing is like my child, and the last thing I want to hear is anything negative, but sometimes, the thing I need to hear is something negative.

If you don't have a writing community or friends in the fandom, message me. I am absolutely certain I'm not the only person in this fandom who would say the same, but so long as we can be kind and respectful to each other, you have a friend. I may be slow to respond, but my DMs are always open (if for no other reason than I have no idea how to close them). 

The best reason to write is because you want to write. That is the beginning and the end of the whole thing, and although there are a lot of reasons you'll find along the way, that is enough. You should write. 5. If you were going to promote this fic with a single line, what would it be? What if Lena was the kind-hearted but often clueless Kryptonian who accidentally found herself dating a Luthor named Kara and then assassination attempts occurred? 6. Hi bud! I'm currently co-writing a Sanvers Big Bang fic with my favorite Sanvers writer, Roadie, which has been SO FUN. I think those will start being posted in October, so still a while to go before it's up. But so no, definitely not done with Sanvers!

As far as future projects, I don't have any ruminating, but if the muse strikes, I absolutely will never say no to it. So look out for the Big Bang, and after that, who knows!

I always welcome prompts to get that brain jiggling, too!
