Mer sign language (MSL)

Mers can talk if raised around humans but if not they use a modified form of sign language. Dreamnap don't really speak because they were never around humans to learn from in the wild, they know human language and can understand it so there arent any language barriers between the handlers and the mers.

It's a universal oceanic sign language, used by mers that live in deeper waters or where there is little to no human interaction, it's studied by humans so interacting with the mers will make both species safer around eachother.

It only really refers ocean things like 'predator' or 'dangerous' or 'food".

If they don't know verbal speech they can still hiss and chirp and stuff out of water. But it's not really preferred

The handlers at the sanctuary use dnap and other ocean rescues to improve their understanding of msl which all employees will have to learn in the long term to make sure the sanctuary is demystified and to instill a sense of trust between the mers and their handlers.

For the first few years the sanctuary had to hire interpreters while the staff were still learning.

Guests can get a little sheet with common signs on them at reception. But msl interpreters will be stationed around the aquarium for any guests to ask.

The sanctuary didn't start researching and learning msl right away so they would hire people who are proficient in msl to help the workers figure out what the mers need if the mers can't use context clues or gestures.

Mer breathing anatomy

When underwater the mers breathe through gills like normal fish (except for the mammals who don't have gills). When surfacing the mers 'sneeze' to remove water from their airways so they don't choke when switching to modified lungs to breathe. Their lungs are much smaller proportionally to humans to make room for their gills and associated organs.

This makes it possible to breathe out of water for a certain period of time - usually two to three hours before having to submerge themselves. Their gills and lungs share the same airway, an epiglottis like muscle can close off the lungs completely when submerged to make sure no water gets into the lungs and drowns the mer. Baby and young juvenile mers do not have the ability to surface since they do not have control of the muscle to open the lungs, they begin to gain control of it on the older end of Juveniles and young adults.

Many mers, especially ones who live in the twilight and midnight zones may never be able to gain control of their lungs. Its not an essential organ for fish mers its kinda like the appendix in humans.

This also means for handlers that getting sneezed on is part of the job.
