I said I wouldn't set rules for the event, but I think some things need to be stated.

Apart from the no nsfw rule, I wasnt planning on putting any other limits, however, since the whole point of event is that we appreciate Ricky's character, we can't just ignore his disability, or the ableism that happened with his character.

If you really want to appreciate Ricky, then you can't ignore it, his disability is an important part of Ricky's character. So as a fan, you should do something!!

Spread awareness, talk about it!(literally, why is the save Ricky Potts thing so forgotten recently?? Its not over), support Yannick, educate yourself on the subject, you can find info on yannick's blog, yannick's site and even on their YouTube channel, portray Ricky with his disability, search up on that topic of how to portray it correctly(I assure you there are tons of things and people that can help you), you can't stay I silence. Also SIGN THE PETTITION!!!

Yes me and some online friends watched it on premier it was great for the most part. There was constant spam every time Elliott Loran’s Ricky came on screen, or anytime information about Corey was shared. The latter being my fault. Also a lot of crying after they explained what La La Love meant. That hit home.

While I enjoyed the first half of the documentary, I did not enjoy the censoring of the information and lack of accountability. I’m very appalled by this, and I think even if you haven’t watched the documentary, you should read the blog post/Youtube video. Fucking disgusting what happened. What’s still happening. Jesus Christ.

Anyways, Yannick Mirko has some very important things to say and I recommend checking it out for sure and reading it for yourself. It goes over things left out and their experience and the invasion of privacy. I’m so glad that they have come out with the truth, but it sucks all of this happened in the first place. Don’t let me summarise it for you, I highly encourage you to go read it. Here’s the blog post.

(Irrelevant but he also has an article on singing on HRT, which has really helped me get over the fear of that stuff. Like, if you’re planning on going on T and are scared of your singing stuff, like I was, please read it. Here’s that one.)

Note: my Ricky isn’t based off a specific actor, but I based some of him off the experience of my best friend, because they went through school using a wheelchair and crutches and are my closest (and dearest) frame of reference. Which we often used to get out of a lot of things because teachers didn’t know shit. (skill issue?)

Ride the Cyclone's Ableism Runs so Much Deeper than I Realised

Hi friends! Its been a while since I spoke about Ride the Cyclone, because it was a shitshow and I quite frankly wanted nothing to do with it anymore.

But I am a chronic ruminator, and its midnight and I am currently in a pain flare, so I have found myself ruminating on RTC. In my head, I jokingly introduced Ocean as "Ablest Extraordinaire!" - which led me to realise that while Ocean is the only one who is explicitly ableist, the others are inherently complicit in her ableism, as they stand by and do literally nothing about it. And they were most likely the exact same while they were all alive.

And then I had the realisation:

The choir only deem Ricky worth listening to - his story worthy of being heard - after he is magically cured of his disabilities and is all of a sudden able-bodied. Now that his existence is palatable to the ableds.

Isn't this an amazing message to be sending to disabled kids? (/s) That in order to even be listened to they should suppress their access needs (by ditching the mobility aids and/or forcing themselves to communicate verbally).

And this isn't just a mentality expressed in the show (and by extension, by Jacob Richmond/Brooke Maxwell), it is one that is expressed by the teams that produce this musical. Exhibit A: McCarter theatre. They hire yannick-robin, but try to dictate which mobility aids he uses, and when, in order to try and make his disabilities more palatable to them and their target audience. And the moment yannick experiences a symptom of said disability (*gasp* shocking, I know, that a consistent denial of one's access needs leads to intensified symptoms) that doesn't fit with the carefully curated image of disability they want to portray, they throw him aside and deem him too "inconsistent".

Fucking pathetic, if you ask me.

To any disabled folks reading this:

You deserve to be heard, as you are. Tell your story however the fuck you see fit. You don't need to force yourself to be palatable to the ableds. They need to pull their heads out of their asses and grow the fuck up, quite frankly. And don't let anyone diminish your access needs - you deserve to have equal access in EVERYTHING. I love you all xx

I agree with this movement, and I'm here to make my contribution to it.

Im going to attempt to rewrite the script, re-add Ricky's disability, and keep him disabled in the afterlife.

This will all be explained in my version of the script.

The ableist Ocean comments will be kept, but in Ocean's monologue towards the end of the show she will apologize to the end of the show for her harmful words.

My dude...disabled ricky has made a statment after the documentary and I literally can't breathe like WHY WAS THIS NOT IN THE DOC

mccarter theater’s behavior regarding #saverickypotts just continues to get worse and worse. the fact that (correct me if i’m wrong) mccarter was asked for a statement in the doc and the theater twisted so much of the story (as confirmed by yannick robin eike’s blog post) is appalling. ride the cyclone is a musical built on trial and error and eventual success. this is only achievable through the ability to admit your wrongs, take criticism, learn, and grow. but in recent years, ride the cyclone, unfortunately, has lost that. never forget your roots.

The first time I ever watched ride the cyclone, I was watching the slime tutorial on my phone with a friend, who's already watched it before. And when I saw Noel's character, I was legitimately prepared for pain.

Cool, a stereotypical gay teenager who's a drama queen and sex-obsessed and kind of annoying to everyone around him. Literally me, but he's gonna be turned into the butt of the joke we're somehow supposed to find empowerment in, right? He'll have his little moment of self-expression and pride, everyone around him will be embarrassed of how cringe it is and be framed as the normal ones, and we'll just have to take it because at least they aknowlaged the existence of gay teenagers. Very cool and not upsetting at all.

And then there was Noel's lament, and I was just like, "that's gonna be it, right? He's having his moment of expression, which he'll then be made fun of to hell and back for daring to be gay while expressing vulnerability". And I kept thinking, god this is beautiful, god do I relate, god am I so sorry for what's about to come. Because the thing is, I also experienced stuff not so different from what he went thorough. Being openly queer from a young age, everyone around you being cool with it on paper but also seeming to think you should stop being so weird, and so you try to keep it down, and be normal, and inside you turn to escapism, because all the heroes in all the stories had a better reason to feel hurt than you do, what are you complaining about, and you wish you were traumatized, because then all that pain and feeling of repression and preformence would not feel like you're just looking for attention even though you're trying to hold it back even though you CAN'T because you have no fucking filter, and... And right after Noel's lament ended, when he was just sitting there in hesitation, waiting to see how the others are going to respond to how he just poured his heart out, I just reached and paused the video, and I turned to my friend, and I went "just... Give me a second," because I wasn't ready to see another gay character I can relate to being degraded for having emotions that are messy.

And then she told me, "no, look," and unpaused the video, and... The other characters didn't act like he just humiliated himself. Mischa thought his performance and creativity were really dope! Ricky loved how he got to play the accordion for this, that was really cool! The only one who was being weird about it was Ocean, and she was presented as an annoying judgmental stuck-up who's trying a tiny bit too hard to seem like this doesn't make her uncomfortable, and was immediately side-eyed by literally everyone, as she should have been because for fucks sake that is how this is literally always like. He poured his heart out... And the story didn't punish him for it. It was genuinely radical for me to see that.

I'm not saying ride the cyclone is perfect in terms of representation- there is a LOT to be said about what they did with Ricky (#saverickypotts). But this is proof that you CAN, in fact, have queer characters and their stories inside of stories that are not inherently queer, and this is why you SHOULD. Because we don't deserve to feel as if the only way we'll ever be accepted is by locking ourselves in a room with only each other and become completely unable to engage with the outside world because every interaction with it becomes so fucking draining. If you're writing a story with mostly straight people, and one of the characters "happened to be (insert queer identity)"... I just want you to know, they don't have to act hyper-respectable all the time, they just need the narrative to treat them with respect. Not just about their identity. About their entire internal world, too. Let them have the dignity of people even if they're sometimes cringe, or weird, or overshary, or bad at communication. Because this is how much it can mean to someone.

[Amazing! I kinda felt like a kid again, because as Karnak told you, I wasn’t born mute. I don’t think I was a good singer when I was a kid, but listening pays off I guess. It was a big switch from being able to kinda breathe-talk and make quiet noises! And it didn’t hurt to talk, or to sing!
