April 2023 *Garden journal.
My mom had these pepper plants given to her. They were extras that some farmer didn’t plant and gave away. We had no idea what they were but we LOVE free plants. So my pregnant self decided to plant a TON of them.
Tumblr media
I started by preparing a spot that would limit the weeds by laying plastic down ( I found the plastic on the side of the road) and punching holes in it with and exhaust tip I borrowed from the husbands scrap pile. This actually served two purposes: one, it pierced the plastic and two, it punched out a perfect hole in the dirt where I could drop the pepper plant.
Planted on April 4th.

Here’s an update about a month later. Lots of them were growing well and showing promise. I had went back and added a layer of hay and manure compost over the plastic to help hold it down to kill any weeds and grass still alive under it. I did ZERO site prep, which was a mistake but I was big pregnant and extra lazy.

Around the end of July they were PRODUCING. And yes I put that in all caps because holy moly these plants TOOK OFF and didn’t stop. And I was in full swing post partem figuring life out with a newborn so I wasn’t able to get out and pick them like I wanted to begin with.
I figured out that they were actually a Scotch Bonnet pepper which is pretty damn hot (see photo). Also bad news for me because I’m a spice wimp. And another reason I was hesitant to pick them because I was terrified I would somehow get the juice on myself and transfer it to my baby.
I did work up the courage to pick them eventually though because I didn’t want them to be wasted.
First harvest Aug 3

They just kept producing though. Like these pepper plants were just throwing peppers at me like crazy so I was just giving them away to anyone and everyone that would take them 😂 They were SO PRETTY though I almost wished I could eat them.
September 21st and 29th harvests.

Here’s the plants on Oct 29th and they were still thriving. About thigh high and COVERED with peppers.
Tumblr media
This was the last harvest that I documented on Nov 3rd. And there were still peppers on the plants. These were so cool to grow, mainly because they pretty much cared for themselves.
Though I did have some challenges with them. I spent a lot of time battling the fire ants that wanted to take residence underneath the plastic bedding. And the weeds and grass that were constantly growing up through the holes next to the plants was a big pain. There are things I would do differently but it was so cool growing a mystery pepper and then getting these gorgeous little bombs.

We gave a few buckets to one of our local restaurant owners who had a much better appreciation for their spice than me. And one of my husbands coworkers used some of them to make a hot sauce that I did try and it was actually really good. They have a very nice flavor and a good strong heat.
Basically I was shoving these peppers at anyone who looked at them more than a second because I knew I couldnt use them but I desperately wanted them not to waste.
Find below the products I used.
Buckets (These are very durable little buckets and easy to clean. I use them for a ridiculous amount of things)
Shears (I used these for taking the peppers off the plant)
Gloves (Couldn't risk pepper juice on my bare hands with a newborn at home)
Please consider using my links for your regularly scheduled Amazon shopping trip :) If you make a purchase using them it will cost you nothing extra though it will help me tremendously.
And please check out my Ko-fi!

Pastor's tomatoes coming up! Between these and the salad tomato seedlings that are also coming up we should be good for tomatoes again. After I get the red bug problem under control, that is 😮‍💨
In other news, that one guy kinda off by themself to the right is one of the ram goat scotch bonnet peppers. This is the first seedling I've gotten from at least 30-40 seeds planted. We had to pull up all the trees earlier in the year when the whiteflies left us no choice, so when I couldn't get a single seed to sprout I was very worried. Gonna set a bunch more soon so I'll hopefully be able to get more than one plant... Yeah, I think I'll set most or all of what I have and save a bunch of seeds from those. 🤔

made a jerk marinade/sauce for chicken and rice yesterday/today and it turned out Pretty Good! I basically never think to cook with allspice and I may have to remedy that.
