Lol! Emma can be such a b*tch sometimes, but she’s just so self-aware & funny in her levels of b*tchiness that I just can’t help but love her!

I’m rewatching the s1 finale of buffy just because and watching that knowing how Cordelia’s storyline ends makes me both sad and annoyed. the one guy since we first met her that she started to genuinely like and who genuinely liked her was killed before they even got a chance and just knowing that every single relationship she has since then gets ruined, sometimes even before they can get started, sucks. I’m not saying that you need a romantic partner to be happy but the fact that she can’t even have that little bit of happiness in her life? that her storyline ends in the way it does? it’s unfair, it’s so unfair

Sarah Z released a new video on Buffy Season 6 - looks like she isn't the only one doing a recent Buffy binge, great minds Sarah! Given her long track record as a Buffy lover I give her props for finally going all in and making a project of it. As is going to be a surprise to no one, I am pretty middling on this video - lets go to the random thoughts:
--- My first comment on this was going be a bit of a question mark around its title, "In Defense of Buffy's Most Hated Season". Season 6? Most hated? Sure you not thinking of Season 4? Or Season 1? Season 6 is very consistently ranked as a higher Season by most - no Season 5 or 3, sure, but normally top 3 or 4. Its a bit of a "cultural baggage" idea - because of, hm, reasons, it was an extremely controversial season back in the day. But removed from its airing that drama faded away, and particularly given that season 6's musical episode is one of the most lasting legacies of the show, now it stands on its merits and is generally liked. Sarah even almost accidentally cops to that with one of her example reddit posts, from a Season 6 hater but who frames that as a hot take:
Tumblr media
However, looks like we agree, because Sarah changed the name of the video! Now its called "You Should Watch Buffy Season 6". I respect and empathize, honestly, realizing the cultural consensus has changed can take some time.
--- For a movie review about defending Season 6, it actually spends half of its analytical run-time criticizing it. And I was not swayed by these - which I am sad about, I have my critiques of the season too. Just trying to explain why the following thoughts are about criticisms, given the title.
--- Does anyone out there interpret Riley's departure in Season 5, and one-episode return in Season 6, as Buffy "losing a good man, and being shown the life she could have had married to him if she didn't screw up"? Because that is what Sarah thinks, and that to me is a buck wild take. Riley is not a subtle character, its pretty much a defining trait of his. Pretty sure his departure in Season 5 is him leaving a bad relationship, that is bad for him and Buffy, and Buffy realizing too late that she was letting pride and self-involvement get in the way of fixing it. Not that it necessarily could be fixed, or should be, just that that was the source. And in season 6 - this to me can't be any clearer - Riley's point in returning is to highlight that he, who was in an awful place in Season 5, got better. He got over it. He's strong even when he doesn't look it. And Buffy is too. She will get over it. Its why she breaks up with Spike at the end of the episode - Buffy realizes she is still strong, she can be way she 'used' to be. It does not forgive Riley's mistakes, or is even about any of that? This is a very weird take. Honestly I want to know if others have this take, tell me if you do.
--- This very weird take by the way comes from the "misogyny" moments that the video constantly alludes to, which tie back into Joss Whedon's behavior, which I want to flag here. I'll admit that from what I have seen of the evidence, while Joss does come off like a huge asshole on set, I actually haven't seen much of a case for a lot more than that. Some people see him as this like uber-predator and I don't know where that is coming from. So I might be biased a bit here, lacking that heft of conviction.
But I still think this is generally correct - someone's personal behavior is an extremely imperfect reflection of their writing chops. Some of the most insightful prose of all time was writing for crass monetization; serial abusers have written, in spades, the most complex and well-realized victim protagonists. Writing is a skill, not a morality trait. Personal action impacts writing, sure, but not in ways that *align* with morality. The fact that Joss Whedon was an asshole on set does not mean the writing on Buffy reflects misogynist abuse. Xander isn't a misogynist - when he is mad at Anya for sleeping with Spike he is portrayed by the narrative as a clear asshole. Riley isn't portrayed as a perfect boyfriend, dude fucking pays vampires to bite him! This all in your head! You don't have to like prove Joss Whedon is a bad dude through textual analysis. His work can still be #girlboss feminism, there is no contradiction there.
--- This will be brief, but I feel like we are past the weird 2010's hiccup of thinking "fridging" is a problem, right? This is about Tara's death, ofc. Stories aren't real life, in stories some characters are way more important than others. Side characters exist, very often, to further the arcs of those main characters. One of them dying as part of a main character's arc is completely normal. Its weird I feel I have to explain this; I don't really, right? Tara is not killed off on a whim; she dies because Willow has a season-long arc of tipping over the edge on magic power, its a lot about her relationship with Tara, and her death pushes her over the brink. I'll admit I find Dark!Willow's execution to be a bit weak, but that's its own problem; the motive is solid. This is how stories work.
--- Additionally, I think there is a big, but a bit unnoticed, shift in what "works" in media around character deaths. When Joss Whedon killed Tara in Buffy - and more notably killed Wash in Serenity - he was doing a deliberate "no one is safe" thing. It became a meme, actually!
Tumblr media
Meme-ing about Joss Whedon man, right there in the garbage dumb of the past alongside Harry Potter memes shitting on Twilight thinking its the better franchise; life comes at you fast. But anyway this was a "big thing" to happen - audiences were shocked by it! It had dramatic impact.
Then Game of Thrones happened and this got turned up to 11, and the general plot twist even more of a meme. But meanwhile, TV changed in the background; entire seasons were getting dumped at once on streaming, everything was becoming "high context" with actors live tweeting their own set experiences, fandoms got more involved and contextual, "water-cooler" shows everyone was talking about faded due to audience separation, all sorts of shit. Which meant that the "kill a main character" thing stopped being powerful - it was overplayed, spoilers were more common, it didn't "air" as a standalone episode everyone talked about. The reason to kill off a character to raise the stakes faded away.
Which means when people go back and say things like "oh I loved Tara why kill her", its...well for one Amber Benson wanted to leave the show. But additionally you can't see the power it had in 2002. TV was different then, it wanted different things.
--- To give something positive, while I think Spike's attempted rape of Buffy is a strong writing choice - very in character for Spike, and its fine that it is primarily about his arc and not Buffy's because its a story, that is how these things work - I do agree that Buffy's response to the event is just not explored enough. It comes up multiple times of course, even in Season 7, but it also gets swamped by plot events in Season 6 with Willow, its not given room to breathe.
This imo relates to the fact that the pacing of the event is a bit wonky - Spike & Buffy had been on the outs for many episodes at that point, there wasn't this strong inciting incident for it. If it had happened much closer to their breakup, in a more focused arc, it would have had more narrative impact and allowed time for both of them to respond to it. I get that they had a lot of plot balls to juggle at that point, but still, missed opportunity I think.
Okay I had more thoughts but I am tired, I think that covers my most interesting complaints/observations anyway.

tbh looking at every media ever someone behind the scenes has hurt ppl no matter what…..so….while I get not wanting to support a certain show because there is proof the creator has hurt a couple people, I also wanna point out…….
Pixar Animation Studios: Sexist history full of perverts in charge with no respect for women and treating female artists and employees like sex toys. Testimony:
How do you feel about Pixar classics now? As much as I still enjoy Toy Story I can’t deny I feel a little bad taste in the back of my throat knowing the creator is a pig. Makes it just a little more difficult watching those movies now….same with any other films, Pixar or Disney, that he was involved in….
Stuff Joss Whedon worked on, from Buffy to the first two Avengers movies. There’s lots of reports on this. Needless to say, I’m glad Marvel fired him.
She Who Must Not Be Named, the creator of the biggest franchise of a generation and the very destructor of said franchise. Like many, I’ve cut that book franchise out of my life entirely and refuse to ever engage with it again.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller pixel-fucked Sony Pictures Animation over the making of Across the Spider-Verse. You’d think they’d have a better understanding of how animated films are made, but their actions behind the scenes of this movie say otherwise.
Related to that, almost all animation studios screw over their workers, (including indie studios, yes, Spindlehorse is sadly one of them), who are overworked and underpaid. When the Animation Guild’s contract runs out next year, expect an animator’s strike that’s been long overdue.
And even more related to that, VFX artists are also screwed over by EVERYONE. They’re even the coiners of the term “pixel-fucking” that I used describing the treatment of the artists behind Spider-Verse. Marvel Studios is one of the worst offenders of this, especially when directors do not understand how to do VFX. And because VFX artists aren’t unionized (which they should be), they are often underpaid and overworked, and it is one of the most thankless jobs in Hollywood. I could write a whole essay on how the VFX industry is treated alone. It’s BAD.
And of course, anything under big corporations, who don’t give two shits about their workers and have no qualms replacing them with AI. Why do you think the SAG-AFTRA strike is going on right now? And none of them will budge.
Independent or not….no media is free from abuse or bad behavior. Almost seems like you gotta be awful to be successful. That’s sad, really…
But of course, many of these examples are related to either capitalism and executive meddling, the sexist culture we live in, and the abusive culture we live in.

Was doing some reading, and had a thought…
Could the Jewish principle of matrilineal descent retcon Judaism back into MCU Wanda’s backstory?
Hear me out.
I found this article which states, among other things:
“From the second century of our era onwards a child of a Jewish mother and a gentile father is a Jew while a child of a Jewish father and a gentile mother is not Jewish (see Mishna Qiddusin 3: 12).”
It’s been well established that Joss Whedon whitewashed Wanda by casting Elizabeth Olsen, and Wanda’s Romani and Jewish heritage has been effectively written out of the MCU. Worse, her room at the Avengers Compound in Civil War is decked out in crosses of all things.
Tumblr media
BUT…
The crosses shouldn’t have been there. BUT, they don’t get discussed and in WandaVision, which I at least consider to be the definitive version (as it actually focuses on Wanda and her backstory)—they disappear.
Tumblr media
SO—
If reincarnated 616-Billy in Coven of Chaos and other MCU media (not the Billy Maximoff variants we see in the Darkhold, but our Wanda’s Billy come back from the “dead”) is Jewish—please, PLEASE KEVIN don’t screw that up—could Wanda adopt that because of Jewish matrilineal tradition?
EDIT:
Please see the full convo between myself and @rose-in-a-fisted-glove about this. Turns out this wouldn’t work how I thought. But I learned a lot! Thank you!

my condolences :( but I'm also curious so what exactly did they screw up?
bruh EVERYTHING LIKE . SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT !!!
ok so like. im not gonna get into plot or anything but basically most of it goes fine or like. hell it's actively a really good season until literally the last TEN MINUTES. where not only do they kill off most of the main characters for literally no reason they also kill a character who had absolutely 0 reason to die, like not even foreshadowed, it was actively hinted at that they'd get a happy ending but i mean they are gay so i guess it was stupid of me to expect that. and it's like. im fine with sad endings hell i love sad endings but it's not just a sad ending it's an utterly hopeless ending. which again would be fine coz i think it works but like. at the same time it doesn't?? it's a silly goofy victorian superhero show??????? but like. i love tragedy but like. no character got a happy ending but every character in this show had like. a semi happy time? except for the gay ppl? like both of them were miserable in their own ways and then the entire season was building up to them finally getting to be happy and then one of them gets fucking KILLED IN THE LAST 10 MINUTES IN THE STUPIDEST WAY POSSIBLE??? LIKE. IM GLAD EVERYONE GOT A BAD ENDING COZ IF IT WAS JUST THEM I'D LITERALLY BE OMW TO JOSS WHEDON'S HOUSE RN. IM BARELY HOLDING BACK AS IT IS. and like there were NO hints that they would get killed none it's completely out of nowhere like i thought they'd get shot bc #trope and they did and i was like aha there we go hurt comfort trope. BITCH YOU THOUGHT. THEY GET SHOT AND THEY DIE. IN SUCH A STUPID FUCKING WAY. AND THERE'S NO PAYOFF OR ANYTHING IT JUST SHOWS THE PERSON WHOS IN LOVE W THEM SITTING THERE SADLY FOR 2 SECONDS IN A MONTAGE AND THEN THE SHOW ENDS. LIKE WHAT IF I DIED FR

so I'm relistening to one of my favorite podcasts, kingkiller chronicles, where a group of people (re)read name of the wind and critique it. in the first episode they most talk about the author, patrick rothfuss. highlights so far
the host who likes his books the most reported that when she met him at an event, she asked him for writing advice. he looked at her and went "I'm patrick rothfuss. who are you?"
that time (admittedly quite a few years ago) he wore a shirt that said "joss whedon is my master now" I found the picture on his blog and you can too if you google it
the fact that his twitter profile is art of himself and his protagonist standing epically next to each other, which isn't even a bad thing but it's very funny. it's pretty clear his cool oc is his cool oc, and that's fine
what's not fine is the fact that his Rromani-inspired main character is apparently generically incliined towards being a genius musician and stealing
another host reported that he witnessed an author meet and greet during which rothfuss, standing 20 feet above his fans at the top of a staircase, asked them not to record him, and then proceeded to talk shit about tolkien for like 20 minutes
this...very bizarre essay he wrote about the new hobbit movie, which he wrote 10 years ago in fairness but he never took down or apologized for. it's like...I can't describe it you'll just have to read it for yourself. this is deranged. this man is incapable of being normal about women. I'm pasting the most relevant part of it under the cut because I need everyone to share my pain. Be ready for a really creepy description of a teenage girl, hatred for sex workers, and unmitigated misogyny
It will be a good movie. Maybe even a great movie. But it will also be, at best, a moderately okay adaptation of the subtle, sweet book that I grew up loving.
You know that it’s going to be like? It’s going to be like wandering onto an internet porn site and seeing a video of a girl I had a crush on in high school. You probably knew someone like her. The smart girl. The shy girl. The one who wore glasses and was a little socially awkward. The one who screwed up the curve in chemistry so you got an A- instead of an A.
She was a geek girl before anybody knew what a geek girl was. And that was kinda awesome, because you were a geek boy before being a geek was culturally acceptable.
You liked her because she was funny. And she was smart. And you could actually talk to her. And she read books.
And sure, she was girl-shaped, and that was cool. And she was cute, in an understated, freckly way. And sometimes you’d stare at her breasts when you were supposed to be paying attention in biology. But you were 16. You stared at everyone’s breasts back then.
And yeah, you had some fantasies about her, because, again, you were 16. But they were fairly modest fantasies about making out in the back of a car. Maybe you’d get to second base. Maybe you could steal third if you were lucky.
And maybe, just maybe, something delightful and terrifying might  happen. And yeah, it would probably be awkward and fumbling at times, but that’s okay because she’d be doing half the fumbling too. Because the only experience either one of you had was from books. And afterwards, if you make a Star Wars joke, you know she’ll get it, and she’ll laugh….
That’s the girl you fell in love with in high school. You didn’t have a crush on her because she was some simmering pool of molten sex. You loved her because she was subtle and sweet and smart and special.
So you stroll onto this porn site, and there she is. Except now she’s wearing a thong and a black leather halter top. She’s wearing fuck-me red lipstick and a lot of dark eye makeup. Her breasts are amazing now, proud and perfectly round.
Someone’s taught her to dance, and she does it well. She’s flexible and tan. She has a flat midriff and walks like a high-class Vegas stripper. Her eyes are dark and smouldering. She has a riding crop, and she likes to be tied up, and her too-red mouth forms a perfect circle as she sighs and moans, and tosses her head in a performance designed to win any number of academy awards….
And what’s the problem with this? Well… in some ways, nothing. What you’ve found is perfectly good porn. Maybe even great porn.
But in other ways the problem is blindingly obvious. This girl has nothing in common with your high-school crush except for her social security number. Everything you loved about her is gone.
We loved the sweet, shy, freckly girl. We still remember her name, and after all these years she lives close to our heart. Seeing her in lipstick and stiletto heels dancing on a pole is like watching Winnie the Pooh do heroin and then glass someone in a bar fight.
It just isn’t something that I look forward to seeing….
[Image of naked Frodo on a stripper pole. I am dead serious. Click the link to see it I don't want it on my blog]
And that’s how I’m going to feel when I watch the Hobbit.
I’ll be one part entertained, two parts nostalgic, two parts irritated, three parts outraged, and one part oddly titillated.
And I’ll watch it, and I’ll enjoy it, and afterwards I’ll go home and feel more than slightly sad….

What irritates me about the response to Charmed (1998) fandom's backlash against the 2018 CW reboot is this:
If it was Buffy the Vampire Slayer getting a reboot without the involvement of Joss Whedon or anybody in the original cast, nobody would think twice about the OG fandom being pissed about it.
Same goes for Supernatural hypothetically getting a reboot 12 years after the show ends, but none of the original cast are involved.
Speaking of Supernatural, I find it highly suspicious that Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, who are in their mid-to-late 40s, immediately got jobs on other CW shows (Walker & The Winchesters) right after Supernatural ended, yet The CW was unwilling to approach Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty, or Rose McGowan about the Charmed reboot, claiming they were "too old" to do a job they'd done then-12 years ago --- despite all of them being basically the same age as Jared and Jensen & stating for years they would be down for a revival.
Charmed (1998) has a cult following, but because non-fandom people primarily remember it for the fanservice / skimpy outfits and behind-the-scenes drama, it's not taken anywhere near as seriously in popular culture as, say, Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Xena: Warrior Princess.
When in fact Charmed was created by a woman who based its main characters on herself and her two sisters, came out two years after The Craft (1996), and specifically based its witchcraft in Wicca because Wicca was the largest of the Neo-Pagan religions at the time specifically serving as a counterculture to the dominant mainstream religion of Christianity (in the USA, at least). Charmed was also the longest female-led drama TV series at 8 seasons (1998 - 2006) until it was beat out by Desperate Housewives in 2012.
(I would also argue that there are things Charmed handles / portrays better than Buffy did, but that's beside the point here.)
It was also infamously screwed around by the network. The WB and Aaron Spelling had no faith in the series' concept of witchcraft until Constance M. Burge made the main characters sisters. Rumors have swirled around for years as to why T.W. King (who played Andy Trudeau) left at the end of season 1. Even now with Shannen and Holly doing a podcast together, I don't think we're ever going to get the full story as to why Shannen left (or was fired) at the end of season 3. (Frankly, I don't really care.) Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano have repeatedly stated they only became producers as of season 5 because it was so chaotic that they couldn't really get a hold of any of the writers or anyone higher-up to discuss script changes, and all the title of "producer" did was give them a larger paycheck: they did not have that much power on-set even after becoming producers on the show. That's not even getting into all the issues with Brad Kern and the sexual harassment/assault charges against him from his time on this show and NCIS: New Orleans.
If Charmed (1998) was treated with more respect that it deserves, yeah, people wouldn't even be questioning the backlash against the reboot from both the fandom and its main cast. But because it's generally seen as a silly witchcraft show with skimpy fanservice and BTS catty drama, people treat the OG fandom as being unreasonable for being upset about the reboot and the OG main cast as jealous, petty bitches.
Which is vastly unfair.

Yo cops they paid good money for this!
RC: Then you wouldn't mind relinquishing your weapon. good word gabriel winters is so annoying *shoots it* *it works, & works way too well & tbh they should have been wearing eye protection* mUZZLE CONTROL "Zap" said the lady

ryan pretty he so pretty always love his outfits, i love how he has a vest but no tie
KR: This is like the Halloween from hell. JE: Oh, yeah, this is probably too lowbrow for you, huh? You're probably into that boring-ass intellectual kind of sci-fi, like Gattaca ((loved that one)) or 2001. The monolith-- what the hell was that? KR: Don't ask me. No, no, swords and sorcery, that's more my thing, like, uh, Lord of the Rings. ((Ooh ryan is a fantasy guy)) [Esposito looks Ryan over. not gay at all] JE: Yeah, I could probably see you as an elf. Or a hobbit. ((bro you are not much taller!)) KR: HOLD ON THAT WAS THE LONE RANGER Esposito is a fan? he could use the excuse that he did some research for the case ryan doesn't make fun of YOU!
*authorized personnel only door in portal* "that means me!" oH NO ARE THOSE LASERS EVIL?
love donnely. apparently his shirt caused a ton of fighting on set & yet it is capable of great damage? Why did you make it harmful then? You could have made it so it feels warm when you get shot, maybe even hot, but this thing is deadly!
What kind of protection? Probably goggles Hm, license plates Castle, bringing the convo back to needing protection
*cut to castle still being concerned & feeling his face* *beckett talking abt the symbolism* ofc he'd be concerned abt his hair

*The elevator opens in front of them with a ding and Castle is there, looking anxious* RC: Hey. Tell me, you guys, do you think my hair is thinning?
*espt looking at his head with a grimace* *castle flinches* he's just playing with him Also why did castle not go wit hthem> isn't he supposed to be shadowin gbeckett?
surprised they are not doing a b plot parallel here
I really want to go to a masquerade ball doing a movie or reboot WITH YOU or what?

*tries telekenesis* bribery lol Ooh a nebula nine marathon aw come on as long as it is light hearted youo should totally make fun
*castle trying to close the elevator doors faster*
Fun music, sexy legs, then THAT face & he falls off the bed KB, with a bloody creaver mouth & mask: You want to make out, Castle? Rawr.
So wait if there was a ship is it real?
I was a firefly fan so I mostly only got the firefly references but there were a lot of other scifi members on the crew or smth so they made a bunch of references to their stuff too.
I highly suggest watching the audio commentary. Super fun.

Maid of Honor
I.e. the episode dedicated to getting as much crap past the radar as possible.
Ah, Paris. That most romantic of cities. Allegedly.
Where did Diana learn French?
Well, now we know where Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon ripped that scene in Bullshit v. Stupid from.
Smooth, Bruce. Smooth.
Audrey is reminiscent of a more innocent time. Before Paris Hilton and Elon Musk, when we admired useless layabouts with obscene amounts of money.
This aired two years after 9/11. I'm honestly surprised they managed to get away with terrorists in a kid's show after that. Though, the DCAU has been mining terrorists as threats since BTAS
Wonder Woman is a foot taller than Audrey and it's kind of adorable
Written by Dwayne McDuffie
Directed by Dan Riba
Kaznia is kind of a screwed up country. Though it does appear to be doing better than the last time we saw it in STAS.
Pretty sure hijacking superhero is a crime, Audrey
Bruce is clearly a 'work hard, play hard' kind of guy
Man, there is nothing I love more than when they do the old BTAS gag of making Batman just... become his entire silhouette.
Every bad guy says that, and every bad guy is wrong.
Diana and Audrey have the exact same eyes. Like, the exact same. Their facial features and builds are different, but the eyes are identical.
That is not the word he used.
Diana x Audrey all I'm saying.
In the real world, clubs have limits due to things like fire safety. Being a celebrity does not (necessarily) allow you to cut in line.
Audrey just straight up arranged an orgy on a kid's show.
Okay, first off, Bruce: you, 'Mister I am the Night!' have no right to judge anybody about the hours they keep. Secondly, breaking into a lady's room is tres creepy
Lying motherfucker you are, Bruce Wayne.
Yeah, cause she's a ditz! And as princess, probably does not have the authority to order her military around. That would either be her father the king or their prime minister, depending on what flavour of dysfunctional government Kaznia has.
Dun dun dun!
On the one hand, Vandal Savage's origin is a little weird even for superhero comics. On the other hand, it's not that weird? And wouldn't the Kaznian royal family have done a thorough background check first?
Wow, they implied the king was a rapist and murdered him on screen. On a kid's show!
Savage, you are a manipulative prick, you know that?
That's an old-school tv.
That's remarkably good animation for a tv show.
Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster
Batman created by Bill Finger
Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston
Animated by Koko

Sebastian Stan and Chris Evans in Captain America: Civil War (Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, 2016) Cast: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Emily VanCamp, Tom Holland, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, Martin Freeman, Marisa Tomei, John Kani, John Slattery, Hope Davis, Alfre Woodard. Screenplay: Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely. Cinematography: Trent Opaloch. Production design: Owen Paterson. Film editing: Jeffrey Ford, Matthew Schmidt. Music: Henry Jackman. The Marvel Cinematic Universe teems with superpeople out to solve the world's problems and as a consequence sometimes screwing things up even more. The Marvel world has even recognized the screwups caused by the plethora of mutants, aliens, and wealthy scientists both good and bad, to the point that after the damage caused in Sokovia -- as seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron (Joss Whedon, 2015) -- the United Nations has put together the Sokovia Accords, designed to regulate the activities of superheroes. Unfortunately, this doesn't sit well with Captain America (Chris Evans), who is a bit of a Libertarian, especially when enforcing the accords threatens his old friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), aka the Winter Soldier -- see Captain America: The Winter Solder (Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, 2014). So Cap's attempt to defend Barnes puts him at odds with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), aka Iron Man, who thinks the Avengers need to display good faith with the accords. And so it goes, with various superheroes taking sides and doing battle for the cause they choose. The problem with Captain America: Civil War is essentially that of Avengers: Age of Ultron: Unless you're a Marvel Comics geek, you need a playbill in hand to figure out who's who and what their superpower is. Or you can, like me, just sit back and enjoy the ride. The Russo brothers have a skillful hand at keeping all of the mayhem going, and the screenplay by Christopher Marcus and Stephen McFeely provides enough quieter moments between the CGI-enhanced action sequences to stave off a headache. But the movie really does feel overpopulated at times: In addition to the combatants mentioned, there are also Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, Anthony Mackie's Falcon, Don Cheadle's War Machine, Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye, and a few newcomers like Paul Rudd's Ant-Man and Tom Holland as the latest incarnation of Spider-Man. There's some good quippy fun among the various members of the cast when they're not showing off their superpowers.
