Hornblower had not the faintest idea what Aubrey was talking about, and his expression of shy hopefulness only served to accentuate Hornblower’s feelings of inadequacy; but that was all the more reason that he could not fail now. To accept a way out would be to admit his ignorance, and he must not let on this weakness. “Oh yes, of course,” he replied hastily, “I should be happy to play it once more. With chords as well, certainly.” Aubrey’s face returned to a warm smile, and Hornblower retreated to behind the piano to contemplate with dread what a “continuo” might be and how one might fill a bass.

Hornblower finds himself with an invitation to play music with a certain Captain Aubrey and his surgeon. It goes about as well as you might expect.
