okay I could have sworn I saw something at one point about a weird programing language that was like oddly kinky? It would praise you when you completed lines of code I think and it had an odd gentle mommy Dom vibe.
i can't remember the name of it or find it now so if anyone thinks this is familiar or know the name of it let me know please.
I thought it might be Whitespace because I remembered it somehow being connected to the videogame Rust but that doesn't seem to be it.

Okay I think I like raspberry pi. I think I like micro bit powered robots. It’s so much easier to learn how to make computers do bullshit things when I have a goal for an adorable tiny computer who is trying his best.
Also it’s really easy to win over staff on a technology when it is objectively adorable.

Hello, Kotlin!
I'm teaching myself a new programming language, sort of.
It's called Kotlin, and you can read about it here and here.
I've used dozens of programming languages in my life. Lately I've been using Java for about 90% of my work, with the other 10% split between C++ and various scripting languages. It feels like I'm out-of-practice with more languages than I ever learned!
I actually need to learn only enough Kotlin to write Gradle build scripts. I've been using Gradle's Groovy DSL (=domain-specific language) for many years, and Gradle recently announced that, going forward, their Kotlin DSL would be the default. But since Kotlin is a GPL (=general-purpose language), I may try writing apps in it as well.
Because Kotlin is very similar to both Java and Groovy, it doesn't quite feel like a new language to me.

I've been fighting Windows' API trying to make a simple program before tomorrow night because I volunteered to do a trivia thing for my family, and I thought it would help with organising the questions and scores. I already have the questions, so it's not a huge problem if it's not finished in time.
I just wanted some form controls, like buttons and stuff, but I'm not that familiar with doing that in Visual Studio with C++. And the information on Microsoft's site is extensive, but... convenient (missing a lot of important information). I learned Win32 programming about a year ago, so I might have also forgotten something important that wasn't mentioned in the documentation I'm using at the moment.
And I could not get a control defined in the code to show up. I didn't want to use the resources for a lot of reasons, even once I figured out how to bypass the kind of stripped down visual editor, but I also couldn't seem to program a button in directly and have it appear in the window when I ran the program. It seemed to be created fine, but I couldn't see it anywhere.
I finally found some example code on Stack Overflow or somewhere, and the reason the button wasn't showing up was because... I hadn't specified the WS_VISIBLE flag when I created it. (WS stands for Window Style. Win32 has a very broad definition of a window that includes buttons) Apparently it's programmed in a way that assumes that an object invisible until you tell it that it's not? I would've done it the other way around.
I had to sit there for a few seconds after I added it in and the button finally showed up. At least it's progress?

Going through the notes seems insane to me because like...in my experience the average ecologist nowadays is at least a mid-range coder. Geneticists as well, you can't do bioinformatics/genomics without coding.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE DOING IT ALL BY HAND??? LIKE BACKSPACING OUT EVERY LETTER BEFORE YOU SEARCH THE STRING???
String identified: AT A ' G T A A??? ACACG T TT AC T TG???
Closest match: Crassostrea gigas strain QD chromosome 2 Common name: Pacific oyster

he invented javascript?!?!
😭
I see people talking about the Brave browser in the whole Firefox vs chrome debate, and while people rightly point out that it's just chromium and that they do shady cryptocurrency shit, I never see anyone point out that Brave's founder and CEO is Brandan Eich.
He founded Brave after massive protests against him becoming CEO of Mozilla, resigning after 11 days. And the reason for those protests? He donated a lot of money to the Prop 8 campaign to ban gay marriage.
So just remember: it's not just another chromium fork, it's not just a browser with cryptocurrency bullshit, it's also the browser founded by a homophobe because he got kicked out of his former organization for being a homophobe.
Also, he invented Javascript. I'm willing to believe that maybe he has grown on the gay marriage issue, and made amends for his former mistakes. But Javascript cannot be forgiven.
