#I WASNT EVEN MEANING TO SO I ACCIDENTALLY SKIPPED THE DIALOGUE BEFORE I KNEW WHAT WAS HAPPENING FUCK#ill go and find it later if only to give myself peace of mind. BUT WOW. WHAT THE FUCK#my original plan was to 1) work my way to the king and talk to him 2) doom myself and take everyone down with me 3) loop back to floor 3#so i can visit the observatory and scrounge for any lore. although since i got killed that run siffrin asked the king to kill him first#which was intereresting. but i decided to have all doors unlocked that time around so i can just get the starcrest and go#but for some reason it wasnt working so i went to get the keyknife since i was already there and completely forgot i already had it#from the previous loop and THATS what triggered it. IT WAS FUNNY BUT ALSO SCARY BUT ALSO I THINK I GET WHAT THEY MEAN#about siffrin going back without actually changing. going along with a script even if his feelings on things change#the same way he has his own small rituals like the carving thing and does it for constancy. reassurance or safety even#and the times when he breaks script and ends horribly like the sadness attacking thing and bonnie yelling at him cause him to loop#to avoid it. although i cant really say anything bc id probably do the same thing. maybe not for the same reasons since im cruel#and make him do the worst to see what will happen since i put curiosity over rejection sensitivity as an observer and player but well.#i feel wrongfooted bringing it up since i dont have it myself but i have to wonder if this kind of leans into ocd tendencies.. i remember#reading something about how ocd is fuelled by fear. and things like counting and rituals are kind of used to cope with that?#if anyone knows anything more or talked abt it already id be really interested in hearing it bc im almost sure im not#the first to come to this conclusion. but i simply dont know enough nor have the confidence to broach the topic rn esp with how often#misconceptions around ocd get casually passed around so its hard for me to know what is and isnt a baseless assumption#puppy plays isat#in stars and time#isat#playthru#isat spoilers#in stars and time spoilers#isat act 3 spoilers#change god#WHAT WAS THAT WITH WEARING LOOPS FACE THOUGH WHAT THE FUCKKK

Ace Attorney fandom.
I know why people don't like Turnabout Bigtop. I am among the people who dislike Turnabout Bigtop.
But I GET why people like the case. I'm not going to be one of those annoying people who just blindly dump on it because I hate those mfs too.
Thing about Bigtop isn't that it sucks. Thing isn't the weird grooming stuff (though that is a huge part of it). It's not that it could've been good.
It's that - in my personal OPINION - it could have been *great*.
I think it had the potential to be one of the best third cases in the trilogy. It had everything; a fun and goofy setting fit for a pretty dang goofy lawyer game - where the environment itself had jokes and quips and one-liners and mishaps and tomfoolery written all over it, it had the previous case introducing a very interesting and important plotline that gave background for one of the more well-loved characters while also introducing an equally fucked up and lovable new one who was a child forced into a shit childhood of naivete in a CIRCUS with another character who was very naive and childish - whose interactions could have been funny and cute and reflective of said shit from the previous case (seriously she becomes such an important character in the 4th case, WHY would they not include her in this one for some character development? How did they fuck up letting a CHILD explore a CIRCUS?? That would have made the interactions flow MUCH better).
They had a pretty good, sympathetic killer imo, a morally dubious victim, an asshole of a client (who was pretty flat admittedly in-game, but I like his weird, topsy-turvy reasoning for it in the anime. Also, I think Max being kinda a dick would have bode well for the themes of Farewell since most of his clients up to this point have been like...nice? Not nice, but sympathetic, but him having to defend someone who's innocent but a prick would have shown him that just because someone is an asshole, doesn't mean they deserve to suffer for it and that they have the potential to grow as people, which is almost a complete foil to what Matt was. Ultimately, I would have loved the contrast of them as clients and I think it would have also served as character development for Phoenix, especially with his low-empathy tendencies).
They just didn't think that far ahead. They just didn't execute it well enough. They just decided to make three of the adult characters fight for the hand in marriage of a teenage girl. (Bat's part of the story was actually kinda good if he was just YOUNGER, I think him doing that for Regina would have been a stupid thing someone in the circus would do to impress their crush. Damn you Ace Attorney and your weird treatment of underage girls!!)
It just flopped and that's ok.
Even though it kinda sucked, it can still mean something to me.
Also I'm a Moe Curls apologist. I liked him, shut up.

Additional fascinating cultural tidbit from roleplaying: Most roleplayers' instincts are to write in 3rd person present tense.
#It's so interesting to me because I can write in present tense but it is NOT my instinct and I've noticed 1) I've thrown people every time#I start with past tense. 2) They often have minor slips into present tense throughout their writing. It clearly doesn't come as natural#to them as using scripts and breaking out the dialogue or only using dialogue.#They definitely don't mind past-t but it takes more work and is generally avoided.#So so interesting. This could also be an academic holdover because 80% of these people are in history/archaeo/anthro too.#Also this could be impacting my OWN academic writing because I'm so familiar with past tense.#ptxt

oooh! okay so this is one I've had for a couple of years now (but I think I figured out a zelinktines that will work with it so hopefully I'll be able to actually finish it next month)
basically it's a crack fic about a speedrun link who, after defeating ganon less than a day after waking up gets a HUGE ego and especially likes puns and flirting with zelda. it's just silly and fun, and after my first attempt stagnated I read a fic that was in a script-like style, and thought it would be fun and I really enjoy it so far

Hey so if you haven't seen it already, the new "translation" is apparently just a rewrite of the original script. Except for Madarame's route and later parts of the game (SUPPOSEDLY) but I didn't play it so I can't verify

From the team themselves:

Semi-related, there is anecdotal evidence that the "they/them" pronouns were approved by Nitro Chiral themselves during the panel below. A few people have said they heard it or read it from the JastBlue team (including me). I haven't went to find JastBlue talking about it but yeah, just extra clarification on it.

Forgot to post this earlier but I did in fact comb the entire Vesperia script to determine how many times he uses ま/まあ throughout the game, along with a few other phrases he uses repeatedly. This counts all of main story, every single sidequest, and every single skit in the game.
Final counts were:
ま/まあ: 280
Ma/Maa; translates to "well". He uses this at the beginning of a sentence usually, but it's sometimes in the middle. "Ma" is usually more quick and snappy. "Maa" is more thoughtful and/or prolonged. Obviously it can vary based on context, but that's the general breakdown.
んじゃ and any variants: 133
Nja, along with variants such as "ja", "soreja", etc. Variants are counted when they're all used to express "let's get going", when they're about to head off ("ja" could be used in a sentence such as "ja/but then, why is xyz like this", etc). They encompass translations such as "well then" (let's get going implied. includes "so then", "then" "alright then", and so on), "we should be off", "let's get going", "let's go", etc. (not to be confused with 行こう(ikou), 行くぜ, (ikuze), and other similar versions of this phrase. That can also mean "let's go", but any instances of Yuri using that particular phrase was not counted because it wasn't a variant of, specifically, んじゃ, which is also his most common "let's go" ja variant).
おい / おいおい: 66
Oi/Oi oi; translates to "hey"/"hey, hey", though "oi" is more or less an accepted word in English nowadays.
おっと: 12
Otto (not to be confused with "oto", referring to sound); an expression of surprise that can translate roughly to "whoa there" (which is the most common translation I do see for it and what I'd use in most cases too, context of course varying). The reason I included this one despite it being so seemingly low in number is because it's not a particularly common expression, much less one used multiple times by a single character? It's so rare from anyone else, which is just a regular thing relative to Yuri and his dialogue/speech (i.e. most characters sparingly use phrases repeatedly, as compared to Yuri... as you can see lol. Other characters use these words/phrases, but nowhere near as regularly, if regularly at all).
Realized along the way I should've included やれやれ (yare yare, "good grief", "oh dear", "oh boy" etc), but by the time I realized I should have in case it was an interesting count, I was too far into the script to be able to handle going all the way back through it LOL.
No. No, I am not joking that Yuri used ま/まあ 280 times throughout the course of the game. That is to say, it could be more if I missed any, but on the assumption I didn't, that's where it stands.
Why do I love this so much? Because it's a very specific character quirk of a character I adore. I'm very fond of his repetition. Thank you.
#GTF Vesperia Things#GTF Yuri Things#so glad I gave him his own tag jpfjugDFJISHFG he fuckin' needs it#OH ALSO note that I may or may not have (I genuinely don't know I don't THIIIINK I did?) accidentally picked up#the “but then" etc variant of ja. at this point I don't remember and I'd have to go back through my doc of this#bc I was skim-combing the script juggling several phrases mainly for ma. if I ever do a recount I'll confirm lol#also shoutout to Rays for using ま/まあ 68 times for him which is 4 more times than he uses it in Vesp arc 1 main story#I'm both thankful and amazed that Rays' writers ACTUALLY kept it to the correct general extent at large (when you consider the size of#both games and Yuri's role) I've always expressed how dedicated they are to the source material of the legacy chars but#that CEMENTED it LOL. the way they retain speech quirks for legacy chars is amazing and I applaud them#he uses おい / おいおい 54 times throughout Rays#おっと was used 10 times throughout Rays which is hilariously almost identical to Vesp's usage#んじゃ they did keep but I didn't count the amount of times#now MIND YOU Rays is split into 4 arcs prior to Recollection (which he's not in) and has to contend with about 200ish legacy characters#Yuri is largely in arc 4 and has a large chunk of appearances in arc 2#he's mostly absent from arc 3 after the beginning of it and he's not in arc 1 much after the first chapter (which is his chapter)#he does show up in a lot of skits early into Rays tho since they only had so many chars to work with for arc 1 skits#and I also included count of those phrases in events (both skits and events throughout the game)#WHAT I'M SAYING is that Rays still managed to retain his word choice repetitiveness#and managed to get the count that high which is a very accurate reflection of it#while trying to put about 200 legacy chars through a revolving door#they were THAT on the nose with Yuri's quirks and further cements that this is a very Yuri thing#and a character quirk choice that was brought in from the game of origin#and they DID do this with other chars not just him... but the fact that they DID to me means#they thought it was important enough of a quirk to make sure they didn't lose it in his dialogue#WHICH. I AGREE. I AM VERY VERY DEEPLY PLEASED THEY KEPT IT#it just goes to show how dedicated they were in faithfully translating the characters into a gacha game#(not tl in the loc sense but tl in the ''writing a char outside their origin game for a non-origin game appearance'')#it also proved my theory that Yuri's vocal repetition was done intentionally bc they found it part of him enough to carry it over#anyway yeah i have yuri lowell brainrot and he pretty much owns 98 percent of the real estate in my brain these days

hrm the frustrations im having with the bg3 toolkit i think all stem from the fact that i was expecting. idk. something like the dao toolset where you can make adventures, rather than just editing like.. visual stuff mostly. like there's a lot here and it's great but i cant find a way to add new levels or even visualise (let alone edit/create) dialogue
#maybe i just havent found these things yet. but if that's the case then man this is unintuitive#bg3#bg3 modding#personal#makes me remember that for most people modding is like. yeah mostly visual edits and maybe some qol/bug fixes#and not deconstructing every piece to see how it works and fantasising about everything i could make from scratch (but never will)#enjoying the object/stat tables tho#i think it's theoretically possible to do dialogue modding entirely through scripting but. um. no thanks!!!!!! i dont care that much!!!!!#and that would only be adding stuff. not looking at what already exists#the community's already make tools for that stuff. i was just kinda hoping the official tool would at least give us what the community has

There are apparently three conversations in AC1 that me and Curtis independently missed, so I'm going to keep a sharp eye out for them on my inevitably approaching replay.
Specifically the one where Desmond talks about the Farm (which I'd seen as an Initiates clip), the one where Desmond says he was using a fake name before this (the missing posters etc. in later games/initiates use his real name, so the writers missed this line too), and the one where Lucy makes the hand signal (which I specifically remember coming out of nowhere at the beginning of AC2).
Examples of Desmond using his real name pre-canon:

From the wiki's catalogue of the Desmond Files: "Friends of Desmond distributed missing person posters all over New York City, requesting any information that would aid them in finding him."
From Desmond's Journey:
Patron: Hey Dez! You going to the after party?
and
Agent: Mister Miles? Desmond: Yeah... Agent: Desmond Miles? Desmond: Yeah, what's this about?
Most of those are particularly impactful for us to have missed, since we saw one of them as an independent clip, and the one with the hand signal is mostly restated information, but the motorcycle/fake name one would have been nice to see.
Its not impossible we did see the motorcycle/fake name one, since I know me and Curtis were distinctly surprised when the game started acting like he'd called himself Desmond Miles the whole time instead of using a fake name, like what makes sense, but... it was the beginning of the game. So.
We missed the other two for sure, though.

But its at least not in the dialogue!#I still need to check the emails but I doubt it will be there either#so the mystery continues another day..........

I have to assume you're deliberately misunderstanding prev at this point, but on the off chance you're not I will repeat what they have explicitly said one more time, with some of my own emphasis because tbh Lucas isn't an especially bad example of what I was talking about. He's just the best known on tumblr. He is, however, awful at acknowledging the work his first wife did on Star Wars and how much that contributed to the success of the trilogy, and, exactly like prev said, has tried to take the reins himself in the subsequent years and demonstrated exactly why she was needed in the first place.
George Lucas isn't a bad film editor. He's also the person who wrote the script and directed (the first) Star Wars. I think it's fair and accurate to say that the (first three) Star Wars films are a product of his vision - and where he was inspired and helped by other directors and collaborators, he's actually great at acknowledging their contribution!
With one exception.
Marcia Lucas is an excellent film editor. She isn't the only editor who worked on Star Wars at all, but, as prev said, the team who worked on the films overall win awards for being particularly good - and Lucas himself acknowledges that he's not the best editor or director! He didn't direct episodes V or VI because he is actually capable of understanding where his strengths lie. This is why he hired other people to edit his films!
One of those people was his then-wife. They are now divorced. Likely because of this divorce, and also because the divorce was partly caused by Star Wars, he now fails to tell the story of how the Star Wars films were kind of a mess when they arrived at the editing suite. Marcia (who had also edited his previous films, because she is a professional film editor and an excellent one) understood his vision and also made several changes without which most people who worked on the film say it would not have come together. George had great ideas, the effects would have been great, but it just wouldn't have sparked a phenomenon the way it did without her work. And he himself used to acknowledge this!
Until they got divorced. Which was right as Episode VI came out. And now he doesn't acknowledge her as much as he really should - and if I remember correctly, Spielberg has called him out on this!
Like I said, I actually don't think he's a particularly egregious example. He's someone who usually is great at acknowledging his collaborators and he's often good at acknowledging where he needs someone else to do something because they are better at it. He hasn't made a film that's anywhere near as good or interesting as the original Star Wars honestly in no small part because he actually has taken a producer role or co-writes or generally just doesn't want to be the director as much since Star Wars. Where he has done, like prev said with the tinkering with the original trilogy, and like EVEN HE says about episodes I - III, the result is just not as good as it could have been.
I'm basically commenting here because your misunderstanding of prev comes off as incredibly bad-faith, especially as this post is constantly just tagged as George Lucas in a way that honestly? I don't think is fair. But prev was actually very specific as to what they were referring to with him, and they're right! Like. Famously right. But I'm hoping that I'm wrong about the bad-faith and this will help both you and others see where prev was coming from, as well as tbh maybe people could tag this as F Scott Fitzgerald because that man literally stole segments out of his wife's diaries without telling her until she read it in his published works, that's more what I was getting at.
I've also just spent all these paragraphs giving context to Lucas mostly because of other posts, when what you're saying is that not only do accolades mean nothing, but it apparently also means nothing that he is not actually a professional film editor. The editing team, of which Marcia was part, was composed of people whose entire job is to edit films. That is why he hired them instead of doing it himself.
okay but if you ever see a male creative who had a string of great work and then everything else he did was dogshit, go to the "personal life" part of his wikipedia and look at his relationships. you'll either find a major tragedy he didn't recover from (completely understandable) or, more likely, there was a woman in his life doing uncredited shit editing his stuff or contributing generally and she's not there anymore.
I told a friend about this phenomenon in literature and he called me weeks later like, I remembered what you said about women doing uncredited work when tim burton came up. he made a string of bangers then everything else just was nowhere near as good. the timeline matches perfectly to when he was with this german visual artist (lena gieseke). he's done some good work in collaboration, but if things were dug into I suspect we would find she did a lot more than people realise.
so yeah whenever you look around like wow women didn't work in history, or, women aren't auteurs, or, there just aren't as many great female writers - societal reasons for that aside, half the time they absolutely did.
#anyway my teenage years as a serious star wars nerd are back with a vengeance for this post only#and Lucas doesn't make films as much anymore because he's more self aware than about 99% of Hollywood about his strengths and weaknesses#also he's like 80 now#if you want a GOOD star wars example the obvious is Carrie Fisher#she was one of the most prolific script doctors in Hollywood for decades#for zero credit she would improve the dialogue and comedy of script after script after script#we literally don't even know half the films she did this for#and we only found out after she died#she improved everyone else's fucking films and nobody acknowledged it#anyway don't actually try me on my original trilogy knowledge I got deep into this shit to impress a girl before I realised I was bisexual#you do not understand the power of queer yearning and you'd be wise not to test it again

Maybe I’ve been going about this the wrong way
#to achieve real peace I have to let go so if you like me or not it’s fine#if no one likes me it’s fine#I’ve actually been trying to force this mindset onto myself for so long and it works for a while but#I unfortunately do care#I’m trying to deal with the cards I’m given to adapt to them even though this reaction isn’t natural but#it’s really hard to live with the reality that I have no stability#or a stable person#everything is so out of my control I don’t like these external variables#it messes up my plans it messes up the dialogue and the sequence of events#in short it doesn’t follow my script and it makes me anxious when it doesn’t#I don’t know how to ***accept*** this reality of not having that stability when it’s practically the only thing I’ve asked for in years#arguably the only thing I’ve ever asked for in my whole life#dora daily#I feel like it’s partially my fault for letting my delusions get the best of me and imagining an alternate reality maladaptively in which my#dream is a reality but then I remember that that was the only way I could live because if I didn’t do that then idk what would’ve happened#to me like istg I might’ve been put in a ward if I didn’t use that method to cope#lots of people laugh and mock lonely people but I kid you not this stuff is so serious it’s giving me sm health issues even
