Welp, due to the snowstorm L. is not going to be able to come into town until Saturday evening at the earliest. So on the one hand I have an extra day to scurryfunge but on the other hand... oh my God it is so hard to plan anything out here during the winter/early spring/whatever the fuck season this is.

I almost always stick to rambles in the tags but I HAVE to include my favorite words because it is underused and so so useful
✨️Scurryfunge✨️
Scurryfunge (or Scurrifunge, it depends on your location) means to quickly clean the house before a guest arrives
It is a fun word and it makes sense! What's not to love
40 English words you never thought existed
Weird, huh?

spell out your name or url with songs !!
Got tagged by @chrisoels thank you! :)
I decided to choose the weirdest songs I could find in my library for the letters. Just because XD
"Kaffee und Panik" by Krautschädl There's not many songs beginning with K. I really like this one.
"Hurrikan" by Electric Callboy I have no excuse
"Atlas" by Battles Not sure what the hell is going on in this song. It's certainly weird.
"Leg of Time" by Bill Bailey "Who stoooole the Leg of Tiiiime???" XD Love it.
"Alien Chase on Arabian Desert" by Al DiMeola Chosen purely for that title tbh
"Ruptura (Combichrist Remix)" by Hocico This is so far away in genre from the stuff I usually listen to, I don't even know why I still have it.
"It's Just not Cricket" by The Duckworth-Lewis Method Well. It's a song about Cricket. What can you expect :D
"Scurryfunge" by The Omnific Hooo boy, those bass guitars...
This was fun :D @kathastrophen, @carlomenzinger, @mordsfesch wanna try your hand at this?
#tag game#I knew I shouldn't have listened to Leg of Time#that's gonna be stuck in my brain for the next few days lol

SPANW – The Society for the Protection of Abused and Neglected Words

Where do you stand on the issue of abused and neglected words? Do you stand up to be counted? If so, you are in the wrong place, that’s the Society for Abused and Neglected Numbers. SPANW needs you, all of you, words need you and they need you now!
Not just those, superstar neglected words like “Scurryfunge,” (the last-minute scramble to get everything tidy before guests arrive). Not that perennial favourite abused word “Iconic,” (like an Icon, something flawless and worthy of veneration). “Iconic” is so overworked and exhausted, it has had to check into rehab. No, we all know about those words, they are the “Giant Pandas,” of the world of words. Here at SPANW we are asking you to spare a thought for those other hard-pressed words, the ones that don’t get all the attention.
Case Studies…
Number One: “Decimate’s,” story.
Poor “Decimate,” Decimate began life in ancient Rome and had a very specific and terrifying meaning. If a Roman legion should fall short of its expected standards, it might be punished by the drawing of lots and the execution of every tenth man as an example to the others.
Now, however, Journalists will invite you to look at a scene of devastation and inform you that a flood, or a landslide has “decimated” some town or village. What a very remarkable and selective landslide, what precision there is in nature, to kill every tenth person.
Decimate, if the word could speak for itself, might reasonably point out, that despite the clue being in the name, DECimate, this ancient and mighty word, has just become a synonym for annihilate, devastate, or obliterate.
Number Two: “Swingeing” and “Draconian,” their stories.
Already neglected words outside of the UK, “Swingeing” has now fallen upon hard times, as has “Draconian.” From the sixties, through to the mid-eighties, every British journalist, TV or print, couldn’t resist the allure of the word “swingeing”. Swingeing, together with his close friend “Draconian,” was on everyone’s lips.
“The Government,” they would inform us, “Has imposed draconian measures to ensure that their swingeing cuts are pushed through.” We were all lacerated by swingeing cuts and crushed under the weight of draconian measures back then and we loved it.
Even though we had austerity and covid lockdowns more recently, not much swingeing went on and precious little was draconian. Both words were perfect for the situation but sadly remained in obscurity.
Number Three: “Literally’s,” story.
Literally… Exactly as described, without exaggeration or distortion… That’s what this fine upstanding word used to mean. It was to be trusted, a word to be taken at its word, you might say. Now, after years of abuse, it has instead become a panderer to hyperbole and an enabler to overstatement.
“If I’m not home by eight, my dad will literally kill me.” If that’s the case, if you indeed have a homicidal father, should you be going home at all?
“I was literally blown away.” Odd, because I did not see a tornado warning on the local news?
“I am literally on top of the world right now.” Really? You are speaking to us live from the North Pole?
So, next time you are “literally decimated by the news!” Consider, if instead you might want to apply a swingeing cut to your word abuse. Otherwise, we shall campaign for draconian measures to curb your excesses.
Don’t take words for granted, or abuse and neglect will see the end of them and we shall all be forced to attempt to communicate in emojis, despite pictograms being abandoned in favour of actual words, thousands of years ago.
So, please join the campaign and help us in our vital work.
Here at SPANW, we take in as many words as we can. We tuck them up in blankets, on a bed of clean straw, before a roaring fire and feed them warm milk with an eyedropper for as long as it takes to nurse them back to health. Weary and marginalised, exhausted through overwork, corrupted and debased, or neglected and forgotten, we care for them all. Once they are back on their feet, we temporarily house them in old, worn, second hand dictionaries until they are strong enough to be released back into the wild.
We want to put a SPANW in the works. We demand equal rights for all words and we will lobby governments worldwide until we get it. Will you stand with us?
***
SPANW is a not-for-profit charitable organisation, which does not exist and is a figment of my imagination. Please do not send donations, eye droppers, or worn dictionaries to SPANW (or me). Thank you.
***
For those who have taken me “literally,” please don’t fill the comments box with admonishments regarding how words have always changed their usage over time and always will and how a word that has changed in that way is normalised and validated through common usage. Thank you in advance, I am aware of that and I was just having fun.

Scurryfunge (SKUHR-ee-fuhnj)
(v.) To rush around cleaning when company is on their way over.
-A hasty tidying of the house between the time you see a neighbor and the time she knocks on the door.
(n.) The act of rushing to clean one’s home in preparation for impending company.
Middle English or archaic Modern English - From “hurry-scurry” (1732) a reduplication of “hurry” (1590s) first recorded in Shakespeare, who used it often; perhaps from Middle English hurren "to vibrate rapidly, buzz" (of insects), from Proto-Germanic *hurza "to move with haste" (source also of Middle High German hurren "to whir, move fast," Old Swedish hurra "to whirl round”)
+
“funge” (1520s) from Latin “fungus” (mushroom) - believed to be derived from Greek “sphongos” the Attic form of "spongos” (sponge) - an implement used for cleaning.
Used in a sentence:
“If not for the occasional scurryfunge, my house would never get cleaned.”
Hey you know what?

11, 15, 18, 26, 27, 28 for the fanfic ask game
11. Do you write scenes in order or do you jump around?
Typically always in order! If I skip to the scenes I want to write then I'll never finish the scenes in between and it won't get done 😭 however, there have been a few chapters I write early on so I can perfect before it's time to write it :)
15. What's your favourite time to write?
Typically afternoon, when I'm back from college, or after dinner when there are no more plans
18. Do you enjoy research? Which fic of yours has required the most research?
I quite like research but I typically won't do more than a quick Google and maybe a Wikipedia skim-read :)
My dsmp vampire au probably has had the most research put into it: I looked up a lot of Victorian slang for twinduo to use (until I lost interest lol) and my favourite new word is "scurryfunge".
26. What's your least favourite part of the writing process?
Having to write boring scenes that have important exposition. Like, the only place we'll get these characters to talk about this is in the car but it's so dull!
27. What area of writing do you feel strongest in?
Dialogue 💪💪💪 I've done my best to master the banter
28. What areas of writing do you want to improve in?
Foreshadowing and fight scenes!

Day 88. Back on my bullshit.
I love how I spent so much time in high position sul D that now I have to get used to playing with this new chinrest/shoulder rest setup in first position, like some kind of peasant LOL. Hitting that high E on the D string doesn't seem so bad now that I have a week's worth of hardcore drills for it behind me. I don't know when I'm going to actually do a for-real benchmark recording because I have to re-learn my actual bowing and fingering for "Salut" all over again, and it's scurryfunge time this week. If I can re-learn it quickly enough (famous last words this year so far, Marve...) I'll try to squeeze it in this week but no promises.
I've already had to re-glue one of the neoprene pads on my BonMusica back down. Are the shear forces that bad at this angle or did they just not glue this pad down well enough? We'll find out.
As a little treat, I started tooling around with the piece that I now have headcanon about re: the Muse and... look, I know I'm a simp but I needed that dopamine.

Dziwne interesy ostatnio przeżywam
Moje chęci do życia, niby heretyka
Instrumenty ulicy, autobus drzwi zamyka
Ubrania ukrywają czego dla ciebie nie ma-
Oznaczenia cierpienia

jakoby łzy w stanie niżu
Wspólne marzenia wyniszczone,
A moje uczucia- nowonarodzone

I See A Lot Of ‘Scurryfunge’ Happening In The Days Ahead
…I don’t know what it was like where you grew up, but in Ireland we had ‘the good room.’
Every home had one.
That was the room that ‘the visitors’ went to.
It was usually always the closest to the front door.
Everything there was polished to an inch of its life, the carpet always freshly vacuumed, and any family accomplishment was hung there for all to see.
For the rest of the family, namely us kids, it was out of bounds.
That room was a shrine to perfection.
And like Instagram, all an illusion to make others think you were getting ahead.
That’s like a lot of emails you get.
The words are always professional, filled with action and daring-do, and about a business that never puts a foot wrong.
But only showing the good room, is the worst thing you can do with email.
Why?
You don’t come across as a human being. One that makes mistakes, goof-ups, and has a weird taste in B movies.
Me, I once drove home and forgot to pick up kids from a singing lesson and didn’t realize until an hour later.
Made a fool out of myself asking for ‘magic pain relief cream’ before I got an injection.
And fell into a river on the way home from my stag do. Oh, and almost froze to death that same night.
Why do I tell you all these things?
For one, it makes me more memorable.
And two, it gets tiring trying to make sure people only see the good room.
Plus, it’s all an illusion you’re kidding yourself with.
If you want to make money, not seem like a robot, and are prepared to show yourself off warts and all…
….go here.
https://writecome.com/email-ace/
Barry J McDonald.
PS – And as for the Scurryfunge?
Well, that’s what you call that scurrying around you do when a surprise visitor turns up unannounced.
I can see a lot of that happening post corona. : )
